Despite the large number of successful applications of laser ablation, elemental and isotopic fractionation coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) remain as the main limitations for many applications of this technique in the fields of analytical chemistry and Earth Sciences. A substantial effort has been made to control such fractionations, which are well-established features of nanosecond laser ablation systems. Technological advancements made over the past decade now allow the ablation of solids by femtosecond laser pulses in the deep ultraviolet (UV) region at wavelengths less than 200 nm. Here the use of femtosecond laser ablation and its effects on elemental and isotopic fractionation is investigated. The Pb/U system is used to illustrate elemental fractionation and stable Fe isotopes are used to illustrate isotopic fractionation. No elemental fractionation is observed beyond the precision of the multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) measurements. Without a matrix match between standard and sample, elemental fractionation is absent even when using different laser ablation protocols for standardization and samples (spot versus raster). Furthermore, we found that laser ablation-induced isotope ratio drifts, commonly observed during nanosecond laser ablation, are undetectable during ultraviolet femtosecond laser ablation. So far the precision obtained for Fe isotope ratio determinations is 0.1‰ (2 standard deviation) for the 56Fe/54Fe ratio. This is close to that obtainable by solution multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The accuracy of the results appears to be independent of the matrix used for standardization. The resulting smaller particle sizes reduce fractionation processes. Femtosecond laser ablation carries the potential to solve some of the difficulties encountered during the two prior decades since the introduction of laser ablation.  相似文献

The formation of molecular and cluster ions of different inorganic materials in plasma mass spectrometry – spark source mass spectrometry (SSMS), radiofrequency glow discharge mass spectrometry (rf GDMS), laser ionization mass spectrometry (LIMS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and laser ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS) – was investigated and compared. Similar abundance distributions of cluster ions were observed for a graphite sample, for boron nitride/ graphite and for metal oxide/graphite mixtures using different plasma mass spectrometric methods. A correlation of intensities of metal argide ions in ICP-MS with their bond dissociation energies was used to estimate unknown dissociation energies of molecular ionic species. For the elements of the 2nd or 3rd period in the periodic table, the intensities of most argon molecular ions (ArX+) measured by ICP-MS rise with increasing atomic number in a similar manner to the theoretically calculated bond dissociation energies of argon molecular ions.  相似文献

Trace elements in microliter quantities of aqueous solutions were analysed by direct liquid ablation using an 193 nm excimer with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Fractionation resulting from splashing and evaporation can be minimised by covering the liquid surface with a thin plastic film, through which a 20 μm hole is drilled with the laser. Particle-size distribution and oxide formation in the plasma resulting from the direct liquid ablation are similar to those generated by solid ablation. The ICP-MS response in cps/ppm is approximately 100 × higher for the direct ablation, but is proportional to the response from solid ablation, within an accuracy < 15% for most trace elements in NIST 610 and NIST 612 glass standards. A matrix load up to 2.5 wt.-% NaCl in the solution does not affect the proportionality of trace element responses. Thus, direct liquid ablation is not only suited for analysing small volumes of complex aqueous solutions (e.g., the quantitative microanalysis of fluid inclusions in minerals), but also provides a new approach for calibrating laser ablation ICP-MS microanalysis of solids. An assessment of the practical implementation of several spectroscopic analysis methods in the analytical service department of the reserach laboratory of a large electronic industry is provided. The emphasis is on inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The evolution of these methods in the department in recent years and their present position in the light of the analysis requests is introductory discussed. A “preview” assessment of the methods in terms of their strong and weak points then forms the basis for a subsequent discussion in which representative examples are used to illustrate in detail why in a particular situation a particular method is applied as the preferred one. It is concluded that ICP-AES is the most rugged and flexible, and therefore the most often applied method, while ICP-MS is uniquely suitable for ultra-trace and survey analysis of solutions and LA-ICP-MS is uniquely suitable for direct solids and local analysis. The ultimate conclusion is that neither of the three methods alone can answer all the analytical questions: they supplement and complement each other, and may even require supplementation by classical analytical methods.  相似文献

Isotopic analyses of radioactive materials such as irradiated nuclear fuel are of major importance for the optimization of the nuclear fuel cycle and for safeguard aspects. Among the mass-spectrometric techniques available, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and thermal ionization mass spectrometry are the most frequently applied methods for nuclear applications. Because of the low detection limits, the ability to analyze the isotopic composition of the elements and the applicability of the techniques for measuring stable as well as radioactive nuclides with similar sensitivity, both mass-spectrometric techniques are an excellent amendment to classical radioactivity counting methods. The paper describes selected applications of multicollector ICP-MS in combination with chromatographic separation techniques and laser ablation for the isotopic analysis of irradiated nuclear fuels. The advantages and limitations of the selected analytical technique for the characterization of such a heterogeneous sample matrix are discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes the automated in situ trace element analysis of solid materials by laser ablation (LA) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A compact computer-controlled solid state Nd:YAG Merchantek EO UV laser ablation (LA) system has been coupled with the high sensitivity VG PQII S ICP-MS. A two-directional communication was interfaced in-house between the ICP-MS and the LA via serial RS-232 port. Each LA-ICP-MS analysis at a defined point includes a 60 s pre-ablation delay, a 60 s ablation, and a 90 s flush delay. The execution of each defined time setting by LA was corresponding to the ICP-MS data acquisition allowing samples to be run in automated cycle sequences like solution auto-sampler ICP-MS analysis. Each analytical cycle consists of four standards, one control reference material, and 15 samples, and requires about 70 min. Data produced by Time Resolved Analysis (TRA) from ICP-MS were later reduced off-line by in-house written software. Twenty-two trace elements from four reference materials (NIST SRM 613, and fused glass chips of BCR-2, SY-4, and G-2) were determined by the automated LA-ICP-MS method. NIST SRM 610 or NIST SRM 613 was used as an external calibration standard, and Ca as an internal standard to correct for drift, differences in transport efficiency and sampling yield. Except for Zr and Hf in G-2, relative standard deviations for all other elements are less than 10%. Results compare well with the data reported from literature with average limits of detection from 1 ng x g(-1) to 455 ng x g(-1) and less than 100 ng x g(-1) for most trace elements.  相似文献

This paper demonstrates the feasibility of performing bulk chemical analysis based on laser ablation for good lateral resolution with only nominal mass ablated per pulse. The influence of repetition rate (1–1000 Hz) and scan speed (1–200 µm/s) using a low energy (30 µJ) and a small spot size (~ 10 µm) UV-femtosecond laser beam was evaluated for chemical analysis of silica glass samples, based on laser ablation sampling and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Accuracy to approximately 14% and precision of 6% relative standard deviation (RSD) were measured.  相似文献

The use of laser ablation (LA) as a sample-introduction method for inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) creates a powerful tool for trace elemental analysis. With this type of instrument, high analyte spatial resolution is possible in three dimensions with ng/g limits of detection and minimal sample consumption. Here, simultaneous detection is used to eliminate the correlated noise that plagues the ablation process. This benefit allows analyses to be performed with single laser pulses, resulting in improved depth resolution, even less sample consumption, and improved measurement precision. The new instrument includes an LA sample-introduction system coupled to an ICP ionization source and a Mattauch-Herzog mass spectrograph (MHMS) fitted with a novel array detector. With this instrument, absolute limits of detection are in the tens to hundreds of fg regime and isotope-ratio precision is better than 0.02% RSD with a one-hour integration period. Finally, depth-profile analysis has been performed with a depth resolution of 5 nm per ablation event.  相似文献

A laser ablation system using a Nd:YAG laser was coupled both to a quadrupole inductively coupled plasma (ICP) mass spectrometer and to a double-focusing sector field ICP mass spectrometer. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was applied for the determination of long-lived radionuclides in a concrete matrix. The investigated samples were two laboratory standards with a concrete matrix, which we doped with different long-lived radionuclides (e.g. 99Tc, 232Th, 233U, 237Np) from the ng g−1 to μ g−1 concentration range and an undoped concrete material (blank). Detection limits for long-lived radionuclides in the 10 ng g−1 range are reached for LA-ICP-MS using the quadrupole mass spectrometer. With double-focusing sector field ICP-MS, the limits of detection are in general one order of magnitude lower and reach the sub ng g−1 range for 233U and 237Np. A comparison of mass spectrometric results with those of neutron activation analysis on undoped concrete sample indicates that a semiquantitative determination of the concentrations of the minor and trace elements in the concrete matrix is possible with LA-ICP-MS without using a standard reference material.  相似文献

The laser ablation (LA) method is an effective technique for quantitative analysis. In the present work, a new LA system was developed for the high-sensitivity analysis of metal materials using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This system consists of a high-frequency Q-switched laser and 2 scanning mirrors for scanning the ablation spot in an adequately large area of the specimen without vacant spaces. The influence of elemental fractionation (non-stoichiometric generation of vapor species) can be eliminated by repetitive irradiation of this pattern on the same area. Particles generated with an average laser power of 0.6 W with the developed LA system gave intensity and stability substantially similar to that of a 500 microg/ml solution steel sample in solution ICP-MS. The analytical performance of the developed LA-ICP-MS was compared with that of a solution ICP-MS using NIST steel SRMs. The performance of the newly-developed system is comparable to that of conventional solution ICP-MS in both accuracy and precision. The correlation coefficients between the contents and the intensity ratios to Fe were over 0.99 for most elements. The relative standard deviation (RSD) obtained by LA-ICP-MS revealed that this system can analyze iron samples with good precision. The results of ultra trace level analysis of high-purity iron showed that developed LA-ICP-MS is capable of analyzing ppm concentration levels with a 20 - 30 ppb level standard deviation. The detection limit was on the order of 10 ppb for most elements.  相似文献

The features of inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) that make it unique also make possible applications in biological chemistry and biomedical research that would be otherwise difficult or impossible. High sensitivity, characterized spectral interferences, rapid mass scanning, and individual isotope measurements are now combined with sophisticated sample preparation, separations, or stable isotope additions to achieve rapid semi-quantitative analysis, element speciation, and high accuracy. The semi-quantitative analysis of various materials, the separation and detection of macromolecules in blood and other tissues, and tracking of stable isotopes added either purposely or inadvertently to children are important applications of ICP-MS. Current functional limitations and obstacles and potential development areas also are examined.  相似文献

Precise and accurate isotope ratio measurements by ICP-MS   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The precise and accurate determination of isotope ratios by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and laser ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS) is important for quite different application fields (e.g. for isotope ratio measurements of stable isotopes in nature, especially for the investigation of isotope variation in nature or age dating, for determining isotope ratios of radiogenic elements in the nuclear industry, quality assurance of fuel material, for reprocessing plants, nuclear material accounting and radioactive waste control, for tracer experiments using stable isotopes or long-lived radionuclides in biological or medical studies). Thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS), which used to be the dominant analytical technique for precise isotope ratio measurements, is being increasingly replaced for isotope ratio measurements by ICP-MS due to its excellent sensitivity, precision and good accuracy. Instrumental progress in ICP-MS was achieved by the introduction of the collision cell interface in order to dissociate many disturbing argon-based molecular ions, thermalize the ions and neutralize the disturbing argon ions of plasma gas (Ar+). The application of the collision cell in ICP-QMS results in a higher ion transmission, improved sensitivity and better precision of isotope ratio measurements compared to quadrupole ICP-MS without the collision cell [e.g., for 235U/238U approximately 1 (10 microg x L(-1) uranium) 0.07% relative standard deviation (RSD) vs. 0.2% RSD in short-term measurements (n = 5)]. A significant instrumental improvement for ICP-MS is the multicollector device (MC-ICP-MS) in order to obtain a better precision of isotope ratio measurements (with a precision of up to 0.002%, RSD). CE- and HPLC-ICP-MS are used for the separation of isobaric interferences of long-lived radionuclides and stable isotopes by determination of spallation nuclide abundances in an irradiated tantalum target.  相似文献

From human health exposure related to environmental contamination to ancient deep-Earth processes related to differentiation of the Earth’s geochemical reservoirs, the adaptability of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has proven to be an indispensable standard technique that transcends disciplines. Continued advancements in ICP-MS, including improved auxiliary applications such as laser ablation (LA), ion/liquid chromatography (IC), automated pre-concentration systems (e.g., seaFAST), and improved desolvating nebulizer systems (e.g., Aridus and Apex) have revolutionized our ability to analyze almost any sample matrix with remarkable precision at exceedingly low elemental abundances. The versatility in ICP-MS applications allows for effective interdisciplinary crossover, opening a world of analytical possibilities. In this communication, we discuss the adaptability of geochemical techniques, including sample preparation and analysis, to environmental and biological systems, using Pb isotopes for source apportionment as a primary example.  相似文献
