The aim of this paper is to study the set of all -summand vectors of a real Banach space . We provide a characterization of -summand vectors in smooth real Banach spaces and a general decomposition theorem which shows that every real Banach space can be decomposed as an -sum of a Hilbert space and a Banach space without nontrivial -summand vectors. As a consequence, we generalize some results and we obtain intrinsic characterizations of real Hilbert spaces.

We show that contrary to anticipation suggested by the dictionary between rational maps and Kleinian groups and by the ``hairiness phenomenon', there exist many Feigenbaum Julia sets whose Hausdorff dimension is strictly smaller than two. We also prove that for any Feigenbaum Julia set, the Poincaré critical exponent is equal to the hyperbolic dimension . Moreover, if , then . We also give a new construction of conformal measures on that implies that they exist for any , and analyze their scaling and dissipativity/conservativity properties.

meets the set of well-rounded lattices. This assertion implies Minkowski's conjecture for and yields bounds for the density of algebraic integers in totally real sextic fields.

We prove that if is consistent then is consistent with the following statement: There is for every a model of cardinality which is -equivalent to exactly non-isomorphic models of cardinality . In order to get this result we introduce ladder systems and colourings different from the ``standard' counterparts, and prove the following purely combinatorial result: For each prime number and positive integer it is consistent with that there is a ``good' ladder system having exactly pairwise nonequivalent colourings.

For a coanalytic-complete or -complete subspace of a Polish space we prove that there exists a continuous bijection of onto the Hilbert cube . This extends results of Pytkeev. As an application of our main theorem we give an answer to some questions of Arkhangelskii and Christensen.

Under the assumption of Projective Determinacy we also give some generalizations of these results to higher projective classes.

We describe surjective Lie homomorphisms from Lie ideals of skew elements of algebras with involution onto noncentral Lie ideals (factored by their centers) of skew elements of prime algebras with involution, provided that and is not PI of low degree. This solves the last remaining open problem of Herstein on Lie isomorphisms module cases of PI rings of low degree. A more general problem on maps preserving any polynomial is also discussed.

We show that is compact and strictly convex, in the spectral norm, with respect to ; that is, is compact, convex and , where and denote the topological boundary with respect to and the set of extreme points, respectively. As an application, we show that the reduced Cowen set for an analytic polynomial is strictly convex; more precisely, if is an analytic polynomial and if , then is strictly convex. This answers a question of C. Cowen for the case of analytic polynomials.
