Metal oxide clusters of sub-nm dimensions dispersed on a metal oxide support are an important class of catalytic materials for a number of key chemical reactions, showing enhanced reactivity over the corresponding bulk oxide. In this paper we present the results of a density functional theory study of small sub-nm TiO(2) clusters, Ti(2)O(4), Ti(3)O(6) and Ti(4)O(8) supported on the rutile (110) surface. We find that all three clusters adsorb strongly with adsorption energies ranging from -3 eV to -4.5 eV. The more stable adsorption structures show a larger number of new Ti-O bonds formed between the cluster and the surface. These new bonds increase the coordination of cluster Ti and O as well as surface oxygen, so that each has more neighbours. The electronic structure shows that the top of the valence band is made up of cluster derived states, while the conduction band is made up of Ti 3d states from the surface, resulting in a reduction of the effective band gap and spatial separation of electrons and holes after photon absorption, which shows their potential utility in photocatalysis. To examine reactivity, we study the formation of oxygen vacancies in the cluster-support system. The most stable oxygen vacancy sites on the cluster show formation energies that are significantly lower than in bulk TiO(2), demonstrating the usefulness of this composite system for redox catalysis.  相似文献

A new topological method is presented to generate the isomer structures of compound clusters with well defined covalent bonds. This method, combined with density functional theory, has been used to perform global optimization of (TiO(2))(n) (n = 1-6) clusters. Our comprehensive search not only reproduces all of the known lowest-energy structures reported in previous works but also reveals some new low-energy structures. Some energetically unfavorable motifs that induce energy penalties are obtained and discussed. Based on the ground state structures of the anionic (TiO(2))(n). clusters, the electron affinities and photoelectron spectra are simulated and compared with available experimental data.  相似文献

Structures, energetics, and vibrational spectra are investigated for small pure (TiO(2))(n), (SiO(2))(n), and mixed Ti(m)Si(n-m)O(2n) [n = 2-5, m = 1 to (n - 1)] oxide clusters by density functional theory (DFT). The BP86/ATZP level of theory is employed to obtain constitutional isomers of the oxide clusters. In accordance with previous studies, our calculations show three-dimensional compact structures are preferred for pure (TiO(2))(n) with oxo-stabilized higher hexavalent states, and linear chain structures are favored for pure (SiO(2))(n) with tetravalent states. However, the herein theoretically first reported mixed Ti(m)Si(n-m)O(2n) oxide clusters prefer either three-dimensional compact or linear chain structures depending upon the stoichiometry of the compound. Vibrational analysis of the important modes of some highly stable structures is provided. Coupled-cluster single and double excitation (with triples) [CCSD(T)] computed energy gaps for the TiO(2) dimers compare well with results from previous study. Excitation energies are computed by use of time-dependent (TD) DFT and equation-of-motion coupled-cluster calculations with singles and doubles (EOM-CCSD) for the most stable isomers.  相似文献

TiO2 is a wide-band-gap semiconductor, and it is an important material for photocatalysis. Here we report an experimental investigation of the electronic structure of (TiO2)n clusters and how their band gap evolves as a function of size using anion photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). PES spectra of (TiO2)n- clusters for n = 1-10 have been obtained at 193 nm (6.424 eV) and 157 nm (7.866 eV). The high photon energy at 157 nm allows the band gap of the TiO2 clusters to be clearly revealed up to n = 10. The band gap is observed to be strongly size-dependent for n < 7, but it rapidly approaches the bulk limit at n = 7 and remains constant up to n = 10. All PES features are observed to be very broad, suggesting large geometry changes between the anions and the neutral clusters due to the localized nature of the extra electron in the anions. The measured electron affinities and the energy gaps are compared with available theoretical calculations. The extra electron in the (TiO2)n- clusters for n > 1 appears to be localized in a tricoordinated Ti atom, creating a single Ti3+ site and making these clusters ideal molecular models for mechanistic understanding of TiO2 surface defects and photocatalytic properties.  相似文献

By first principles calculations, we explore the possibility that Na(-)(H(2)O)(n) and Li(-)(H(2)O)(n) clusters, which have been measured previously by photoelectron experiments, could serve as gas-phase molecular models for the solvation of two electrons. Such models would capture the electron-electron interaction in a solution environment, which is missed in the well-known anionic water clusters (H(2)O)(n) (-). Our results show that by n = 10, the two loosely bound s electrons in Li(-)(H(2)O)(n) are indeed detached from lithium, and they could exist in either the singlet (spin-paring) or the triplet (spin-coupling) state. In contrast, the two electrons would prefer to stay on the sodium atom in Na(-)(H(2)O)(n) and on the surface of the cluster. The formation of a solvated electron pair and the variation in solvation structures make these two cluster series interesting subjects for further experimental investigation.  相似文献

The structure and harmonic vibrations of Ga(n)N(n) (n = 3-10) clusters have been investigated using the B3LYP (Becke 3-parameter-Lee-Yang-Parr) density functional theory. All structures are found to be cumulenic D(nh) rings (equal bonds, alternating angles), with one intense out of plane mode and three infrared-active degenerate modes, of which the highest one is extremely intense and asymptotically increases to 1029 cm(-1) for n = 10. Comparisons with C2n, B(n)N(n), and Al(n)N(n) clusters, the structure and bonding type for the Ga(n)N(n) (n=3-10) clusters are consistent with those of the C2n (n = 3, 5, 7, ...) clusters, the B(n)N(n) (n = 3-10), and Al(n)N(n) (n = 3-9) clusters.  相似文献

A systematic study of bimetallic Au(n)M(2) (n = 1-6, M = Ni, Pd, and Pt) clusters is performed by using density functional theory at the B3LYP level. The geometric structures, relative stabilities, HOMO-LUMO gaps, natural charges and electronic magnetic moments of these clusters are investigated, and compared with pure gold clusters. The results indicate that the properties of Au(n)M(2) clusters for n = 1-3 diverge more from pure gold clusters, while those for n = 4-6 show good agreement with Au(n) clusters. The dissociation energies, the second-order difference of energies, and HOMO-LUMO energy gaps, exhibiting an odd-even alternation, indicate that the Au(4)M(2) clusters are the most stable structures for Au(n)M(2) (n = 1-6, M = Ni, Pd, and Pt) clusters. Moreover, we predict that the average atomic binding energies of these clusters should tend to a limit in the range 1.56-2.00 eV.  相似文献

A theoretical study of the ScCn, ScCn+, and ScCn- (n = 1-8) open-chain clusters has been carried out. Predictions for their electronic energies, rotational constants, dipole moments and vibrational frequencies have been made using the B3LYP method with different basis set including effective core potentials, ECPs. For the ScCn open-chain clusters the lowest-lying states correspond to quartet states for n-odd members, whereas for n-even species the ground state is found to be a doublet. In the cationic and anionic species, the electronic ground state is found to be a singlet for even n and a triplet for odd n. An even-odd parity effect (n-even clusters being more stable than n-odd ones) is observed in neutral and charged clusters. Ionization energies and electron affinities also exhibit a clear parity alternation trend, with n-even clusters having higher values than n-odd ones.  相似文献

Vanadium oxide clusters, (V2O5)n, have been predicted to possess interesting polyhedral cage structures, which may serve as ideal molecular models for oxide surfaces and catalysts. Here we examine the electronic properties of these oxide clusters via anion photoelectron spectroscopy for (V2O5)n(-) (n = 2-4), as well as for the 4d/5d species, Nb4O10(-) and Ta4O10(-). Well-resolved photoelectron spectra have been obtained at 193 and 157 nm and used to compare with density functional calculations. Very high electron affinities and large HOMO-LUMO gaps are observed for all the (V2O5)n clusters. The HOMO-LUMO gaps of (V2O5)n, all exceeding that of the band gap of the bulk oxide, are found to increase with cluster size from n = 2-4. For the M4O10 clusters, we find that the Nb/Ta species yield similar spectra, both possessing lower electron affinities and larger HOMO-LUMO gaps relative to V4O10. The structures of the anionic and neutral clusters are optimized; the calculated electron binding energies and excitation spectra for the global minimum cage structures are in good agreement with the experiment. Evidence is also observed for the predicted trend of electron delocalization versus localization in the (V2O5)n(-) clusters. Further insights are provided pertaining to the potential chemical reactivities of the oxide clusters and properties of the bulk oxides.  相似文献

The vibrational OH stretch spectra have been measured for Na(H2O)n clusters in the size range from n = 8 to 60. The complete size selection is achieved by coupling the UV radiation of a dye laser below the ionization threshold with the tunable IR radiation of an optical parametric oscillator. The spectra are dominated by intensity peaks around 3400 cm(-1) which we attribute to an increased transition dipole moment of delocalized electrons in this type of doped cluster. Aside from the positions of free (3715 cm(-1)) and double donor (3560 cm(-1)) bonds which are known from pure water clusters, specific transitions are observed at 3640 cm(-1) and in the range of the single donor bonds between 3000 and 3200 cm(-1).  相似文献

Equilibrium geometries, charge distributions, stabilities, and electronic properties of the Ag-adsorbed (SiO(2))(n) (n=1-7) clusters have been investigated using density functional theory with generalized gradient approximation for exchange-correlation functional. The results show that the Ag atom preferably binds to silicon atom with dangling bond in nearly a fixed direction, and the incoming Ag atoms tend to cluster on the existing Ag cluster leading to the formation of Ag islands. The adsorbed Ag atom only causes charge redistributions of the atoms near itself. The effect of the adsorbed Ag atom on the bonding natures and structural features of the silica clusters is minor, attributing to the tendency of stability order of Ag(SiO(2))(n) (n=1-7) clusters in consistent with silica clusters. In addition, the energy gaps between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals remarkably decrease compared with the pure (SiO(2))(n) (n=1-7) clusters, eventually approaching the near infrared radiation region. This suggests that these small clusters may be an alternative material which has a similar functionality in treating cancer to the large gold-coated silica nanoshells and the small Au(3)(SiO(2))(3) cluster.  相似文献

Various structural possibilities for Si3C3 clusters are investigated by ab initio calculations employing basis sets of double- and triple-zeta quality augmented by d polarization functions. Correlation effects are included by a second-order Moeller Plesset perturbation treatment. For the two lowest-lying structures higher-order correlation corrections and multi-reference effects are also included. Bonding features are investigated by two different types of population analyses to obtain insight into the nature of chemical bonding. A total of 17 stationary points were investigated, 14 of which correspond to local minima and three being transition states. The energetically lowest-lying structures are: A “pyramidlike” structure with various multicenter bonds, followed by a Cs symmetric isomer closely related to the ground state Si6 structure. Planar structures, favoured in small carbon clusters, lie higher in energy and are transition states. The lowest-lying triplet system is found to be the linear nonsymmetric Si-C-C-C-Si-Si structure, which is calculated to lie about 38 kcal/mole above the singlet ground state. A building-up principle based on bonding criteria is suggested for the occurence of the various structural possibilities.  相似文献

Neutral and negatively charged bismuth clusters, Bi n and Bi(-)n (n=2-13), are investigated by first-principles simulations with the scalar-relativistic projector-augmented wave potential and the spin-polarized generalized gradient approximation. Both types of clusters show size-dependent odd-even oscillations in stability, density of states, and vertical and adiabatic electron affinities, in close agreement with experiment. The negative charge thoroughly reverses the oscillations and considerably influences the geometric structures, particularly of the odd-sized clusters. We note that most atoms in the ground states and the low-lying isomers are three coordinated with a quasilayerlike growth mode based on pentagon units, due to a weak s-p hybridization. The Bi12 cluster is found to prefer a small elongated tubelike structure with the surface consists of six curved-pentagon rings and two triangular facets, which may be the basis for the formation of bismuth nanotubes experimentally reported.  相似文献

The (TiO2)n clusters and their anions for n = 1-4 have been studied with coupled cluster theory [CCSD(T)] and density functional theory (DFT). For n > 1, numerous conformations are located for both the neutral and anionic clusters, and their relative energies are calculated at both the DFT and CCSD(T) levels. The CCSD(T) energies are extrapolated to the complete basis set limit for the monomer and dimer and calculated up to the triple-zeta level for the trimer and tetramer. The adiabatic and vertical electron detachment energies of the anionic clusters to the ground and first excited states of the neutral clusters are calculated at both levels and compared with the experimental results. The comparison allows for the definitive assignment of the ground-state structures of the anionic clusters. Anions of the dimer and tetramer are found to have very closely lying conformations within 2 kcal/mol at the CCSD(T) level, whereas that of the trimer does not. In addition, accurate clustering energies and heats of formation are calculated for the neutral clusters and compared with the available experimental data. Estimates of the titanium-oxygen bond energies show that they are stronger than the group VIB transition metal-oxygen bonds except for tungsten. The atomization energies of these clusters display much stronger basis set dependence than the clustering energies. This allows the calculation of more accurate heats of formation for larger clusters on the basis of calculated clustering energies.  相似文献

We investigated the structures and bonding of two series of early transition-metal oxide clusters, M(2)O(n)(-) and M(2)O(n) (M = Nb, Ta; n = 5-7) using photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and density-functional theory (DFT). The stoichiometric M(2)O(5) clusters are found to be closed shell with large HOMO-LUMO gaps, and their electron affinities (EAs) are measured to be 3.33 and 3.71 eV for M = Nb and Ta, respectively; whereas EAs for the oxygen-rich clusters are found to be much higher: 5.35, 5.25, 5.28, and 5.15 eV for Nb(2)O(6), Nb(2)O(7), Ta(2)O(6), and Ta(2)O(7), respectively. Structural searches at the B3LYP level yield triplet and doublet ground states for the oxygen-rich neutral and anionic clusters, respectively. Spin density analyses reveal oxygen radical, diradical, and superoxide characters in the oxygen-rich clusters. The M(2)O(7)(-) and M(2)O(7) clusters, which can be viewed to be formed by M(2)O(5)(-/0) + O(2), are utilized as molecular models to understand dioxygen activation on M(2)O(5)(-) and M(2)O(5) clusters. The O(2) adsorption energies on the stoichiometric M(2)O(5) neutrals are shown to be surprisingly high (1.3-1.9 eV), suggesting strong capabilities to activate O(2) by structural defects in Nb and Ta oxides. The PES data also provides valuable benchmarks for various density functionals (B3LYP, BP86, and PW91) for the Nb and Ta oxides.  相似文献

The effect of the nanostructure on the photochemistry of TiO2 is an active field of research owing to its applications in photocatalysis and photovoltaics. Despite this interest, little is known of the structure of small particles of this oxide with sizes at the nanometer length scale. Here we present a computational study that locates the global minima in the potential energy surface of Ti(n)O2n clusters with n = 1-15. The search procedure does not refer to any of the known TiO2 polymorphs, and is based on a novel combination of simulated annealing and Monte Carlo basin hopping simulations, together with genetic algorithm techniques, with the energy calculated by means of an interatomic potential. The application of several different methods increases our confidence of having located the global minimum. The stable structures are then refined by means of density functional theory calculations. The results from the two techniques are similar, although the methods based on interatomic potentials are unable to describe some subtle effects. The agreement is especially good for the larger particles, with n = 9-15. For these sizes the structures are compact, with a preference for a central octahedron and a surrounding layer of 4- and 5-fold coordinated Ti atoms, although there seems to be some energy penalty for particles containing the 5-fold coordinated metal atoms with square base pyramid geometry and dangling Ti=O bonds. The novel structures reported provide the basis for further computational studies of the effect of nanostructure on adsorption, photochemistry, and nucleation of this material.  相似文献
