The purpose of this opening talk is to describe examples of recent progress in applying statistical mechanics to biological systems. We first briefly review several biological systems, and then focus on the fractal features characterized by the long-range correlations found recently in DNA sequences containing non-coding material. We discuss the evidence supporting the finding that for sequences containing only coding regions, there are no long-range correlations. We also discuss the recent finding that the exponent alpha characterizing the long-range correlations increases with evolution, and we discuss two related models, the insertion model and the insertion-deletion model, that may account for the presence of long-range correlations. Finally, we summarize the analysis of long-term data on human heartbeats (up to 10(4) heart beats) that supports the possibility that the successive increments in the cardiac beat-to-beat intervals of healthy subjects display scale-invariant, long-range "anti-correlations" (a tendency to beat faster is balanced by a tendency to beat slower later on). In contrast, for a group of subjects with severe heart disease, long-range correlations vanish. This finding suggests that the classical theory of homeostasis, according to which stable physiological processes seek to maintain "constancy," should be extended to account for this type of dynamical, far from equilibrium, behavior.  相似文献

Application of statistical physics to heartbeat diagnosis.   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We present several recent studies based on statistical physics concepts that can be used as diagnostic tools for heart failure. We describe the scaling exponent characterizing the long-range correlations in heartbeat time series as well as the multifractal features recently discovered in heartbeat rhythm. It is found that both features, the long-range correlations and the multifractility, are weaker in cases of heart failure.  相似文献

Here we discuss recent advances in applying ideas of fractals and disordered systems to two topics of biological interest, both topics having common the appearance of scale-free phenomena, i.e., correlations that have no characteristic length scale, typically exhibited by physical systems near a critical point and dynamical systems far from equilibrium. (i) DNA nucleotide sequences have traditionally been analyzed using models which incorporate the possibility of short-range nucleotide correlations. We found, instead, a remarkably long-range power law correlation. We found such long-range correlations in intron-containing genes and in non-transcribed regulatory DNA sequences as well as intragenomic DNA, but not in cDNA sequences or intron-less genes. We also found that the myosin heavy chain family gene evolution increases the fractal complexity of the DNA landscapes, consistent with the intron-late hypothesis of gene evolution. (ii) The healthy heartbeat is traditionally thought to be regulated according to the classical principle of homeostasis, whereby physiologic systems operate to reduce variability and achieve an equilibrium-like state. We found, however, that under normal conditions, beat-to-beat fluctuations in heart rate display long-range power law correlations.  相似文献

We calculate numerically the localization length critical index within the Chalker-Coddington model of the plateau-plateau transitions in the quantum Hall effect. We report a finite-size scaling analysis using both the traditional power-law corrections to the scaling function and the inverse logarithmic ones, which provided a more stable fit resulting in the localization length critical index ν = 2.616 ± 0.014. We observe an increase of the critical exponent ν with the system size, which is possibly the origin of discrepancies with early results obtained for smaller systems.  相似文献

The magnetic phase transition in a Heisenberg fluid is studied by means of the finite size scaling technique. We find that even for larger systems, considered in an ensemble with fixed density, the critical exponents show deviations from the expected lattice values similar to those obtained previously. This puzzle is clarified by proving the importance of the leading correction to the scaling that appears due to Fisher renormalization with the critical exponent equal to the absolute value of the specific heat exponent alpha. The appearance of such new corretions to scaling is a general feature of systems with constraints.

Monte-Carlo simulations are routinely used for estimating the scaling exponents of complex systems. However, due to finite-size effects, determining the exponent values is often difficult and not reliable. Here, we present a novel technique of dealing with the problem of finite-size scaling. This new method allows not only to decrease the uncertainties of the scaling exponents, but makes it also possible to determine the exponents of the asymptotic corrections to the scaling laws. The efficiency of the technique is demonstrated by finding the scaling exponent of uncorrelated percolation cluster hulls.  相似文献

We explore the degree to which concepts developed in statistical physics can be usefully applied to physiological signals. We illustrate the problems related to physiologic signal analysis with representative examples of human heartbeat dynamics under healthy and pathologic conditions. We first review recent progress based on two analysis methods, power spectrum and detrended fluctuation analysis, used to quantify long-range power-law correlations in noisy heartbeat fluctuations. The finding of power-law correlations indicates presence of scale-invariant, fractal structures in the human heartbeat. These fractal structures are represented by self-affine cascades of beat-to-beat fluctuations revealed by wavelet decomposition at different time scales. We then describe very recent work that quantifies multifractal features in these cascades, and the discovery that the multifractal structure of healthy dynamics is lost with congestive heart failure. The analytic tools we discuss may be used on a wide range of physiologic signals. (c) 2001 American Institute of Physics.  相似文献

We report a numerical investigation of the Anderson transition in two-dimensional systems with spin-orbit coupling. An accurate estimate of the critical exponent nu for the divergence of the localization length in this universality class has to our knowledge not been reported in the literature. Here we analyze the SU(2) model. We find that for this model corrections to scaling due to irrelevant scaling variables may be neglected permitting an accurate estimate of the exponent nu=2.73+/-0.02.  相似文献

By solving a master equation in the Sierpiński lattice and in a planar random-resistor network, we determine the scaling with size L of the shot noise power P due to elastic scattering in a fractal conductor. We find a power-law scaling P proportional, variantL;{d_{f}-2-alpha}, with an exponent depending on the fractal dimension d_{f} and the anomalous diffusion exponent alpha. This is the same scaling as the time-averaged current I[over ], which implies that the Fano factor F=P/2eI[over ] is scale-independent. We obtain a value of F=1/3 for anomalous diffusion that is the same as for normal diffusion, even if there is no smallest length scale below which the normal diffusion equation holds. The fact that F remains fixed at 1/3 as one crosses the percolation threshold in a random-resistor network may explain recent measurements of a doping-independent Fano factor in a graphene flake.  相似文献

Superpersistent chaotic transients are characterized by an exponential-like scaling law for their lifetimes where the exponent in the exponential dependence diverges as a parameter approaches a critical value. So far this type of transient chaos has been illustrated exclusively in the phase space of dynamical systems. Here we report the phenomenon of noise-induced superpersistent transients in physical space and explain the associated scaling law based on the solutions to a class of stochastic differential equations. The context of our study is advective dynamics of inertial particles in open chaotic flows. Our finding makes direct experimental observation of superpersistent chaotic transients feasible. It also has implications to problems of current concern such as the transport and trapping of chemically or biologically active particles in large-scale flows.  相似文献

The dynamic behaviours of the translocations of closed circular polymers and closed knotted polymers through a nanopore, under the driving of an applied field, are studied by three-dimensional Langevin dynamics simulations. The power-law scaling of the translocation time τ with the chain length N and the distribution of translocation time are investigated separately. For closed circular polymers, a crossover scaling of translocation time with chain length is found to be τ~ N α , with the exponent α varying from α = 0.71 for relatively short chains to α = 1.29 for longer chains under driving force F = 5. The scaling behaviour for longer chains is in good agreement with experimental results, in which the exponent α = 1.27 for the translocation of double-strand DNA. The distribution of translocation time D(τ) is close to a Gaussian function for duration time τ < τ p and follows a falling exponential function for duration time τ > τ p . For closed knotted polymers, the scaling exponent α is 1.27 for small field force (F = 5) and 1.38 for large field force (F = 10). The distribution of translocation time D(τ) remarkably features two peaks appearing in the case of large driving force. The interesting result of multiple peaks can conduce to the understanding of the influence of the number of strands of polymers in the pore at the same time on translocation dynamic process and scaling property.  相似文献

We discuss the shape dependence of the finite-size scaling limit in a strongly anisotropic O(N) model in the large-N limit. We show that scaling is observed even if an incorrect value for the anisotropy exponent is considered. However, the related exponents may only be effective ones, differing from the correct critical exponents of the model. We discuss the implications of our results for numerical finite-size scaling studies of strongly anisotropic systems.Received: 9 April 2003, Published online: 4 August 2003PACS:   05.70.Jk Critical point phenomena - 64.60.-i General studies of phase transitions  相似文献

We present Monte Carlo simulations of a two-dimensional bilayer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet with random dimer dilution. In contrast with exotic scaling scenarios found in other random quantum systems, the quantum phase transition in this system is characterized by a finite-disorder fixed point with power-law scaling. After accounting for corrections to scaling, with a leading irrelevant exponent of omega approximately 0.48, we find universal critical exponents z=1.310(6) and nu=1.16(3). We discuss the consequences of these findings and suggest new experiments.  相似文献

The quantum to classical transition for a system depends on many parameters, including a scale length for its action, variant Planck's over 2 pi, a measure of its coupling to the environment, D, and, for chaotic systems, the classical Lyapunov exponent, lambda. We propose measuring the proximity of quantum and classical evolutions as a multivariate function of (Planck's over 2 pi,lambda,D) and searching for transformations that collapse this hypersurface into a function of a composite parameter zeta= Planck's over 2 pi alpha)lambda beta D gamma. We report results for the quantum Cat Map and Duffing oscillator, showing accurate scaling behavior over a wide parameter range, indicating that this may be used to construct universality classes for this transition.  相似文献

Many systems respond to slowly changing external conditions with crackling noise, created by avalanches or pulses with a broad range of sizes. Examples range from Barkhausen noise (BN) in magnets to earthquakes. In this Letter, we discuss the effects of increasing driving rate Omega on the scaling behavior of the avalanche size and duration distributions as well as qualitative effects of Omega on the power spectra. We derive an exponent inequality as a criteria for the relevance of Omega. To illustrate these general results, we use recent experiments on BN as a successful example.  相似文献

We report experiments on spontaneous imbibition of a viscous fluid by a model porous medium in the absence of gravity. The average position of the interface satisfies Washburn's law. Scaling of the interface fluctuations suggests a dynamic exponent z approximately 3, indicative of global dynamics driven by capillary forces. The complete set of exponents clearly shows that interfaces are not self-affine, exhibiting distinct local and global scaling, both for time (beta = 0.64 +/- 0.02, beta(*) = 0.33 +/- 0.03) and space (alpha = 1.94 +/- 0.20, alpha(loc) = 0.94 +/- 0.10). These values are compatible with an intrinsic anomalous scaling scenario.  相似文献
