Interest in the use of supercomputers for the direct numerical calculation of turbulence prompts the development of efficient numerical techniques so that calculation at higher Reynolds numbers might be made. This paper presents an efficient pseudo-spectral technique, similar to but different from others that have recently appeared, for the calculation of momentum and heat transfer to a constant-property, turbulent fluid in a two-dimensional channel with walls at different, uniform temperature. The code uses no empiricism, although periodic boundary conditions are used for fluctuating quantities in the streamwise and spanwise directions. Calculations were made for a Prandtl number of 0·72 and Reynolds number based on friction velocity and channel half-height of 180 or 2800 based on channel half-height and average velocity. Calculations of mean velocity profile, turbulence intensities, skewness, flatness, Reynolds stress and eddy diffusivity of heat near a wall compare favourably with experimental results. Representative contour plots of the temperature field near the wall and of the spanwise and streamwise two-point velocity correlations are given. Deficiencies are that the calculation requires many hours on a fast computer with a large high-speed memory and that the grid size in each direction for appropriate resolution is approximately proportional to the square of the Reynolds number and to the Prandtl number raised to some power greater than one.  相似文献

An experimental study was performed to analyze the stability of localized streaky structure in a Blasius boundary layer. An artificial streaky structure was created by using suction or blowing through a thin spanwise slot at the wall. The velocity gradient generated by the suction or blowing was controlled by a damper. The Reynolds number based on the displacement thickness 1 was =280 at the slot. The behavior of the artificial streaky structure was scrutinized by damping the velocity gradient. It was found that the local streamwise and spanwise velocity gradients play a significant role in the formation of different types of instability. Artificial Tollmien–Schlichting (T–S) wave packets were created by a loudspeaker to elucidate the interaction of the streaky structure with the T–S wave packets. The T–S wave packets imposed on the streaky structure become unstable when the frequency of the T–S wave packets exceeds a certain critical frequency. The development of the T–S wave packets was investigated on the basis of the neutral stability curve.  相似文献

A linear model of a two-fluid channel flow under streamwise/spanwise electric field is built. Both the fluids are assumed to be incompressible, viscous and perfectly dielectric. The effect of the streamwise and spanwise electric fields on transient behavior of small three-dimensional disturbances is studied. The numerical result shows that the streamwise electric field suppresses transient growth of the disturbance with spanwise uniform wave number. The spanwise electric field diminishes transient growth of the disturbance with streamwise uniform wave number. Two peaks of optimal growth are detected in the wave number plane. The peak at relatively large spanwise wave number is dominated by the lift-up mechanism and little influenced by electric field. Differently, the peak at relatively small wave number is associated with the characteristic of the interface and possibly influenced by electric field. The effect of the Weber number, the Reynolds number and the relative electrical permittivity on optimal growth is studied as well. A scaling law is obtained for relatively small Weber numbers and relatively large Reynolds numbers.

The flow field of a channel rotating about the streamwise axis is analyzed experimentally and numerically. The current investigations were carried out at a bulk velocity based Reynolds number of Rem = 2850 and a friction velocity based Reynolds number of Reτ = 180, respectively. Particle-image velocimetry (PIV) measurements are compared with large-eddy simulation data to show earlier direct numerical simulation findings to generate too large a reverse flow region in the center region of the spanwise flow. The development of the mean spanwise velocity distribution and the influence of the rotation on the turbulent properties, i.e., the Reynolds stresses and the two-point correlations of the flow, are confirmed in both investigations. The rotation primarily influences those components of the Reynolds shear stresses, which contain the spanwise velocity component. The size of the correlation areas and thus the length scales of the flow generally grow in all three coordinate directions leading to longer structures. Furthermore, experimental results of the same channel flow at a significantly lower bulk Reynolds number of Rem, l = 665, i.e., a laminar flow in a non-rotating channel, are introduced. The experiments show the low Reynolds number flow to become turbulent under rotation and to develop the same characteristics as the high Reynolds number flow.  相似文献

In this study, we investigate the effect of the spanwise width on the mixing layer behind a rearward-facing step. Results for aspect ratios (tunnel width/step height) of 10 and 4 and Reynolds numbers of 11,000 and 5,000 are presented. A frequency shifted, single component LDV system was used to obtain mean streamwise velocity profiles, turbulence intensity profiles, and normal velocity spectra at four streamwise and three spanwise positions for each test case. The mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles are constant across the width of the test section for either of the Reynolds numbers considered, but there are significant differences among the cases studied. At a distance greater than three step heights down-stream of the step, the peak turbulence intensity is greater for higher aspect ratio and is relatively insensitive to Reynolds number. The peak frequency is lower and the spectrum is narrower for a higher aspect ratio in the region near the step.  相似文献

Unsteady three-dimensional (3-D) numerical simulations of linear shear flow past a square cylinder at moderate Reynolds number (Re=200) are performed. The shear parameter (K) considered in this study is varied as 0.0, 0.1, and 0.2. For the uniform flow (K=0.0) case, the chosen Re falls in the transition Reynolds number range. The low frequency force pulsations of square cylinder transition phenomena are observed to decrease with increasing shear parameter. The evolution of streamwise vortical structures indicates a mode A spanwise instability in the uniform flow. Unlike in uniform flow, mixed mode A and mode B spanwise instability is observed in the case of a shear flow. The autocorrelation function of the lift and the drag coefficients is improved for any particular separation distance with increasing K.  相似文献

Numerical experiments are performed to study rotational effects on the mixed convection of low-Prandtlnumber fluids enclosed between the annuli of concentric and eccentric horizontal cylinders. The inner cylinder is assumed to be heated and rotating. The rotational Reynolds number considered is in the range where the effect of Taylor vortices is negligible. The Prandtl number of the fluid considered is in the range 0·01–1·0. The Rayleigh number considered is up to 106. A non-uniform mesh transformation technique coupled with the introduction of ‘false transient’ parameters to the vorticity and streamfunction-vorticity expressions was used to solve the governing set of equations. Results show that when the inner cylinder is made to rotate, the multicellular flow patterns observed in stationary cylindrical annuli subside in a manner depending on the Prandtl number of the fluids. Eventually the flow tends toward a uniform flow similar to that of a solid body rotation. For a fixed Rayleigh number and with a Prandtl number of the order of 1·0, when the inner cylinder is made to rotate, the mean Nusselt number is observed to decrease throughout the flow. For lower Prandtl number of the order 0·1–0·01 the mean Nusselt number remained fairly constant when the inner cylinder was made to rotate. The mean Nusselt numbers obtained were also compared with available data from other investigators.  相似文献

The pre-multiplied spanwise energy spectra of streamwise velocity fluctuations are investigated in this paper. Two distinct spectral peaks in the spanwise spectra are observed in low-Reynolds-number wall-bounded turbulence. The spectra are calculated from direct numerical simulation(DNS) of turbulent channel flows and zero-pressure-gradient boundary layer flows. These two peaks locate in the nearwall and outer regions and are referred to as the inner peak and the outer peak, respectively. This result implies that the streamwise velocity fluctuations can be separated into large and small scales in the spanwise direction even though the friction Reynolds number Reτ can be as low as 1000. The properties of the inner and outer peaks in the spanwise spectra are analyzed. The locations of the inner peak are invariant over a range of Reynolds numbers. However, the locations of the outer peak are associated with the Reynolds number, which are much higher than those of the outer peak of the pre-multiplied streamwise energy spectra of the streamwise velocity.  相似文献

For Rayleigh‐Bénard‐Poiseuille flows, thermal stratification resulting from a wall‐normal temperature gradient together with an opposing gravitational field can lead to buoyancy‐driven instability. Moreover, for sufficiently large Reynolds numbers, viscosity‐driven instability can occur. Two higher‐order‐accurate methods based on the full and linearized Navier‐Stokes equations were developed for investigating the temporal stability of such flows. The new methods employ a spectral discretization in the homogeneous directions. In the wall‐normal direction, the convective and viscous terms are discretized with fifth‐order‐accurate biased and fourth‐order‐accurate central compact finite differences. A fourth‐order‐accurate explicit Runge‐Kutta method is employed for time integration. To validate the methods, the primary instability was investigated for different combinations of the Reynolds and Rayleigh number. The results from these primary stability investigations are consistent with linear stability theory results from the literature with respect to both the onset of the instability and the dependence of the temporal growth rate on the wave angle. For the cases with buoyancy‐driven instability, strong linear growth is observed for a broad range of spanwise wavenumbers. The largest growth rates are obtained for a wave angle of 90°. For the cases with viscosity‐driven instability, the linear growth rates are lower and the first mode to experience nonlinear growth is a higher harmonic with half the wavelength of the fundamental.  相似文献

A transonic backward-facing step flow, at a free stream Mach number of 0.8 and a Reynolds number of 1.86 × 105 with respect to the step height, was investigated experimentally by means of planar and stereo Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements for multiple fields of view. The primary aim of this analysis is to examine whether the large temporal variations of the reattachment location is associated with the presence of large scale coherent flow structures. The mean flow reattaches ≈6.1±0.2 times the step height downstream of the step. This value fluctuates temporally as much as ±3 step heights. Measurements of the wake flow in horizontal planes show that the strong variations of the reattachment length are associated with spanwise variations of the streamwise velocity. Two-point correlations revealed large–scale coherent regions with a length of up to 7 step heights and a dominant spanwise wave-length of 1.5…2.5 step heights. Furthermore, close to the step large structures are found, which span more than 5 step heights in spanwise direction. The Reynolds stress distribution of the separated region strongly suggests that the initial streamwise momentum is transferred to the vertical component as well as to the spanwise component in comparable portions by the deformation of the initial Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices and the generation of secondary ones. As a result, the separated shear layer is characterized by eddies of various sizes and orientations. The mean flow field only shows the primary separation bubble and a secondary recirculation region. No stationary streamwise vortices could be found for the tested Reynolds number.  相似文献

A global stability study of a divergent channel flow reveals features not obtained hitherto by making either the parallel or the weakly non-parallel (WNP) flow assumption. A divergent channel flow is chosen for this study since it is the simplest spatially developing flow: the Reynolds number is constant downstream, and for a theoretical Jeffery?CHamel flow, the velocity profile obeys similarity. Even in this simple flow, the global modes are shown to be qualitatively different from the parallel or WNP. In particular, the disturbance modes are often not wave-like, and the local scale, estimated from a wavelet analysis, can be a function of both streamwise and normal coordinates. The streamwise variation of the scales is often very different from the expected linear variation. Given recent global stability studies on boundary layers, such spatially extended modes which are not wave-like are unexpected. A scaling argument for why the critical Reynolds number is so sensitive to divergence is offered.  相似文献

The transient growth due to non-normality is investigated for the PoiseuilleRayleigh-Bénard problem of binary fluids with the Soret effect. For negative separation factors such as ψ =-0.1, it is found that a large transient growth can be obtained by the non-normal interaction of the two least-stable-modes, i.e., the upstream and downstream modes, which determine the linear critical boundary curves for small Reynolds numbers. The transient growth is so strong that the optimal energy amplification factor G(t) is up to 10~2~10~3. While for positive separation factors such as ψ = 0.1, the transient growth is weak with the order O(1) of the amplification factor, which can even be computed by the least-stable-mode. However, for both cases, the least-stable-mode can govern the long-term behavior of the amplification factor for large time. The results also show that large Reynolds numbers have stabilization effects for the maximum amplification within moderate wave number regions. Meanwhile, much small negative or large positive separation factors and large Rayleigh numbers can enlarge the maximum transient growth of the pure streamwise disturbance with the wavenumber α = 3.14. Moreover, the initial and evolutionary two-dimensional spatial patterns of the large transient growth for the pure streamwise disturbance are exhibited with a plot of the velocity vector, spanwise vorticity, temperature, and concentration field. The initial three-layer cell vorticity structure is revealed. When the amplification factor reaches the maximum Gmax, it develops into one cell structure with large amplification for the vorticity strength.  相似文献

The present work examines the turbulent flow in an enclosed rotor–stator system subjected to heat transfer effects. Besides their fundamental importance as three-dimensional prototype flows, such flows arise in many industrial applications but also in many geophysical and astrophysical settings. Large eddy simulations (LES) are here performed using a spectral vanishing viscosity technique. The LES results have already been favorably compared to velocity measurements in the isothermal case (Séverac, E., Poncet, S., Serre, E., Chauve, M.P., 2007. Large eddy simulation and measurements of turbulent enclosed rotor–stator flows. Phys. Fluids, 19, 085113) for a large range of Reynolds numbers 105Re=Ωb2/ν106, in an annular cavity of large aspect ratio G=(b-a)/H=5 and weak curvature parameter Rm=(b-a)/(b+a)=1.8 (a,b the inner and outer radii of the rotor and H the interdisk spacing). The purpose of this paper is to extend these previous results in the non-isothermal case using the Boussinesq approximation to take into account the buoyancy effects. Thus, the effects of thermal convection have been examined for a turbulent flow Re=106 of air in the same rotor–stator system for Rayleigh numbers up to Ra=108. These LES results provide accurate, instantaneous quantities which are of interest in understanding the physics of turbulent flows and heat transfers in an interdisk cavity. Even at high Rayleigh numbers, the structure of the iso-values of the instantaneous normal temperature gradient at the disk surfaces resembles the one of the iso-values of the tangential velocity with large spiral arms along the rotor and more thin structures along the stator. The averaged results show small effects of density variation on the mean and turbulent fields. The turbulent Prandtl number is a decreasing function of the distance to the wall with 1.4 close to the disks and about 0.3 in the outer layers. The local Nusselt number is found to be proportional to the local Reynolds number to the power 0.7. The evolution of the averaged Bolgiano length scale LB with the Rayleigh number indicates that temperature fluctuations may have a large influence on the dynamics only at the largest scales of the system for Ra107, since LB remains lower than the thermal boundary layer thicknesses.  相似文献

A thermo-mechanical turbulence model is developed and used for predicting heat transfer in a gas–solid flow through a vertical pipe with constant wall heat flux. The new four-way interaction model makes use of the thermal kθ–τθ equations, in addition to the hydrodynamic k–τ transport, and accounts for the particle–particle and particle–wall collisions through a Eulerian/Lagrangian formulation. The simulation results indicate that the level of thermal turbulence intensity and the heat transfer are strongly affected by the particle collisions. Inter-particle collisions attenuate the thermal turbulence intensity near the wall but somewhat amplify the temperature fluctuations in the pipe core region. The hydrodynamic-to-thermal times-scale ratio and the turbulent Prandtl number in the region near the wall increase due to the inter-particle collisions. The results also show that the use of a constant or the single-phase gas turbulent Prandtl number produces error in the thermal eddy diffusivity and thermal turbulent intensity fields. Simulation results also indicate that the inter-particle contact heat conduction during collision has no significant effect in the range of Reynolds number and particle diameter studied.  相似文献

The influence of small cylindrical bluntness of the leading edge of a flat plate on formation of spatial structures in a nominally two-dimensional supersonic compression corner flow at the Mach number M∞ ≈ 8 and a laminar state of the undisturbed boundary layer is studied by the method of temperature-sensitive paints. Streamwise vortices are found in the region of reattachment of the separated flow in a wide range of Reynolds numbers (0.15 · 106–2.55 · 106) for various angles of flow deflection and plate lengths. It is demonstrated that the existence of these vortices induces spanwise oscillations of the heat transfer coefficient; the amplitude of these oscillations may reach 30%. The maximum deviations of the Stanton number reaching 80% are observed in the case with significant roughness of the leading edge of the flat plate. Both the maximum Stanton numbers in the reattachment region and the amplitude of spanwise oscillations of the Stanton number induced by streamwise vortices are found to decrease significantly in the case of small bluntness of the leading edge. Solutions of three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations are obtained for some test conditions. The computed results are in good agreement with experimental data, which points to a significant stabilizing effect of small bluntness on the intensity of streamwise vortices.  相似文献

We compare two turbulent boundary layers produced in a low-speed water channel experiment. Both are subjected to an identical streamwise pressure gradient generated via a lateral contraction of the channel, and an additional spanwise pressure gradient is imposed on one of the layers by curving the contraction walls. Despite a relatively high streamwise acceleration, hot-film probe measurements of the mean-velocity distributions show that the Reynolds number increases whilst the coefficient of friction decreases downstream. Visualization of the viscous layers using hydrogen bubbles reveal an increase in the non-dimensional streak spacing in response to the acceleration. Changes in statistical moments of the streamwise velocity near the wall suggest an increased dominance of high-velocity fluctuations. The near-wall streaks and velocity statistics have little sensitivity to the boundary layer three-dimensionality induced by the spanwise pressure gradient, with the boundary-layer crossflow velocity reaching 11 % that of the local freestream velocity.  相似文献

Three-dimensional vortical structures have been measured in a circular-cylinder wake using particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) for the Reynolds number range of 2×103 to 1×104. The PIV was modified, compared with the conventional one, in terms of its light sheet arrangement to capture reliably streamwise vortices. While in agreement with previous reports, the presently measured spanwise structures complement the data in the literature in the streamwise evolution of the near-wake spanwise vortex in size, strength, streamwise and lateral convection velocities, shedding new light upon vigorous interactions between oppositely signed spanwise structures. The longitudinal vortices display mushroom patterns in the (x, z)-plane in the immediate proximity to the cylinder. Their most likely inclination in the (x, y)-plane is inferred from the measurements in different (x, z)-planes. The longitudinal vortices in the (y, z)-plane show alternate change in sign, though not discernible at x/d > 15. They decay in the maximum vorticity and circulation rapidly from x/d = 5 to 10 and slowly for x/d > 10, and are further compared with the spanwise vortices in size, strength and rate of decay.  相似文献

The aim of the present work is to study the entropy generation in the natural convection process in square cavities with hot wavy walls through numerical simulations for different undulations and Rayleigh numbers, while keeping the Prandtl number constant. The results show that the hot wall geometry affects notably the heat transfer rate in the cavity. It has been found in the present numerical study that the mean Nusselt number in the case of heat transfer in a cavity with wavy walls is lower, as compared to heat transfer in a cavity without undulations. Based on the obtained dimensionless velocity and temperature values, the distributions of the local entropy generation due to heat transfer and fluid friction, the local Bejan number, and the local entropy generation are determined and plotted for different undulations and Rayleigh numbers. The study is performed for Rayleigh numbers 103 < Ra < 105, irreversibility coefficients 10?4 < φ < 10?2, and Prandtl numbers Pr = 0.71. The total entropy generation is found to increase with increasing undulation number.  相似文献

In this paper, the problem of laminar, two dimensional heat convection from a circular cylinder performing steady rotation is investigated. The cylinder is␣placed with its axis horizontal in a quiescent fluid of infinite extent. Because of viscous dissipation, the flow process is confined to the region adjacent to the cylinder and is mainly driven by shear and buoyancy forces. The study is based on the solution of the full conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy for Rayleigh numbers up to 104 and Reynolds numbers (based on surface velocity) up to 400 while Prandtl number ranges between 0.7 and 7.0. For the range of parameters considered, the study revealed that the rate of heat transfer increases with the increase of Rayleigh number and decreases with the increase of speed of rotation. The increase of Prandtl number resulted in an appreciable increase in the average Nusselt number only at low Reynolds numbers. The effect of Prandtl number at high Reynolds number is negligibly small. The resulting flow field in all cases is steady with no vortex shedding. The streamlines and isotherms are plotted for a number of cases to show the details of the velocity and thermal fields. Received on 15 December 1997  相似文献
