Acoustic analyses were carried out on vocal vibrato produced by nine opera singers and vocal tremor accompanying the sustained phonation of patients with the following diagnoses: Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, essential tremor, and adductor spastic dysphonia. While vocal tremor on average had a faster oscillatory rate and greater amplitude extent when compared to vocal vibrato, only the cycle to cycle measures of shimmer and jitter differed significantly between these groups. However, these differences existed even when the effect of the oscillation was removed. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that vocal vibrato in singers and vocal tremor in patients may be part of the same continuum.  相似文献

Measures of vocal function during changes in vocal effort level   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The purpose of this article is to present the results of a controlled study of the day-to-day variabilities of three acoustic parameters (jitter, shimmer, and normalized noise energy), and two electroglottographic parameters (contact quotient and contact quotient perturbation) for vowels produced at three vocal efforts (low, normal, high). Data were obtained with use of a sophisticated bilinear interpolation pitch detection method. A repeated measures design required subjects to produce the vowels // and /a/ five times a day over 3 days at each vocal effort level. The jitter, shimmer, and normalized noise energy values from acoustic measures and contact quotient and contact quotient perturbation values varied significantly among the three vocal effort levels. The clinical implication of this finding is that vocal effort must be controlled in order to obtain consistent clinical measures. Furthermore, day-to-day variability must be taken into account if representative measures are to be obtained for clinical use.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of vocal hygiene education on the vocal hygiene behaviors and perceptual vocal characteristics of untrained singers. Eleven adult untrained singers served as subjects. They attended four 1-hour class sessions on vocal hygiene, including anatomy and physiology of the phonatory mechanism, vocally abusive behaviors, voice disorders commonly seen in singers, and measures to prevent voice disorders. Pre- and postinstruction surveys were used to record subjects' vocal abuses and their perceptions of their speaking and singing voice. They also rated their perceived value of vocal hygiene education. Results revealed minimal changes in vocal hygiene behaviors and perceptual voice characteristics. The subjects did report a high degree of benefit and learning, however.  相似文献

Voice quality in patients with vocal fold paralysis can be affected by several factors, such as the position of the paralyzed vocal fold, its degree of atrophy, the configuration of its free edge, and the level differences between both vocal folds. Depending on the related vocal deficiency the patient will attempt to compensate using different maneuvers, such as increment of vocal tract and neck muscle contraction to improve glottal closure. This is probably one of the reasons why ventricular folds are frequently requested. The objective of this study is to analyze the behavior of the homolateral and contralateral vestibular folds to delineate patterns of vestibular motion during sustained phonation, in cases of unilateral vocal fold paralysis.  相似文献

Relatively little literature exists documenting the effects of pharmacological agents upon the voice. Our understanding of this subject is facilitated through review of the few studies that have been performed, as well as through understanding of the principles of action of drugs in various classes. Such study provides a reasonable basis for understanding and predicting the effects of drugs on the voice.  相似文献

The fundamental frequency of vocal fold oscillation (F(0)) is controlled by laryngeal mechanics and aerodynamic properties. F(0) change per unit change of transglottal pressure (dF/dP) using a shutter valve has been studied and found to have nonlinear, V-shaped relationship with F(0). On the other hand, the vocal tract is also known to affect vocal fold oscillation. This study examined the effect of artificially lengthened vocal tract length on dF/dP. dF/dP was measured in six men using two mouthpieces of different lengths. Results: The dF/dP graph for the longer vocal tract was shifted leftward relative to the shorter one. Conclusion: Using the one-mass model, the nadir of the "V" on the dF/dP graph was strongly influenced by the resonance around the first formant frequency. However, a more precise model is needed to account for the effects of viscosity and turbulence.  相似文献

Efficiency of automatic recognition of male and female voices based on solving the inverse problem for glottis area dynamics and for waveform of the glottal airflow volume velocity pulse is studied. The inverse problem is regularized through the use of analytical models of the voice excitation pulse and of the dynamics of the glottis area, as well as the model of one-dimensional glottal airflow. Parameters of these models and spectral parameters of the volume velocity pulse are considered. The following parameters are found to be most promising: the instant of maximum glottis area, the maximum derivative of the area, the slope of the spectrum of the glottal airflow volume velocity pulse, the amplitude ratios of harmonics of this spectrum, and the pitch. On the plane of the first two main components in the space of these parameters, an almost twofold decrease in the classification error relative to that for the pitch alone is attained. The male voice recognition probability is found to be 94.7%, and the female voice recognition probability is 95.9%.  相似文献

Analytical and computer simulation studies have shown that the acoustic impedance of the vocal tract as well as the viscoelastic properties of vocal fold tissues are critical for determining the dynamics and the energy transfer mechanism of vocal fold oscillation. In the present study, a linear, small-amplitude oscillation theory was revised by taking into account the propagation of a mucosal wave and the inertive reactance (inertance) of the supraglottal vocal tract as the major energy transfer mechanisms for flow-induced self-oscillation of the vocal fold. Specifically, analytical results predicted that phonation threshold pressure (Pth) increases with the viscous shear properties of the vocal fold, but decreases with vocal tract inertance. This theory was empirically tested using a physical model of the larynx, where biological materials (fat, hyaluronic acid, and fibronectin) were implanted into the vocal fold cover to investigate the effect of vocal fold tissue viscoelasticity on Pth. A uniform-tube supraglottal vocal tract was also introduced to examine the effect of vocal tract inertance on Pth. Results showed that Pth decreased with the inertive impedance of the vocal tract and increased with the viscous shear modulus (G") or dynamic viscosity (eta') of the vocal fold cover, consistent with theoretical predictions. These findings supported the potential biomechanical benefits of hyaluronic acid as a surgical bioimplant for repairing voice disorders involving the superficial layer of the lamina propria, such as scarring, sulcus vocalis, atrophy, and Reinke's edema.  相似文献

A simple, one degree of freedom virtual trajectory model of vocal fold kinematics was developed to investigate whether kinematic features of vocal fold movement confirm increased muscle stiffness. Model simulations verified that increases in stiffness were associated with changes in kinematic parameters, suggesting that increases in gesture rate would affect kinematic features to a lesser degree in vocal hyperfunction patients given the increased levels of muscle tension they typically employ to phonate. This hypothesis was tested experimentally in individuals with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD; N = 10) and vocal nodules (N = 10) relative to controls with healthy normal voice (N = 10) who were examined with trans-nasal endoscopy during a simple vocal fold abductory-adductory task. Kinematic measures in MTD patients were less affected by increased gesture rate, consistent with the hypothesis that these individuals have elevated typical laryngeal muscle tension. Group comparisons of the difference between medium and fast gesture rates (Mann-Whitney, one-tailed) showed statistically significant differences between the control and MTD individuals on the two kinematic features examined (p<0.05). Results in nodules participants were mixed and are discussed independently. The findings support the potential use of vocal fold kinematics as an objective clinical assay of vocal hyperfunction.  相似文献

Coupling between the vocal folds is one of the nonlinear mechanisms allowing regulation and synchronization of mucosal vibration. The purpose of this study was to establish that modulations such as diplophonia and abnormalities observed in vocal signals that may be observed in some cases of laryngeal pathology can be considered as nonlinear behavior due to the persistence of some physical interaction (coupling). An experimental model using excised porcine larynx was designed to create tension asymmetry between the vocal folds and to obtain vocal signals with modulations. Signals were analyzed by spectral analysis and the phase portrait method. Results were compared with computer-generated synthetic signals corresponding to nonlinear combinations of sinusoid signals. Under these conditions, evidence of nonlinear behavior was detected in 85% of experimental signals. These findings were interpreted as a demonstration of vocal fold interaction. Based on these findings, the authors conclude that (1) coupling must be taken into account in physical models of laryngeal physiology, and that (2) methods of nonlinear dynamics may be used for objective voice analysis.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of prolonged loud reading, intended to induce fatigue, on vocal function in adults with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). Subjects were 20 adults, 37–60 years old, with UVFP secondary to recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis. Subjective ratings and instrumental measures of vocal function were obtained before and after reading. Statistical analysis revealed subjects rated their vocal quality and physical effort for voicing more severely following prolonged loud reading, whereas expert raters did not detect a significant perceptual difference in vocal quality. Reading fundamental frequency (Fo) was significantly increased following prolonged loud reading, as were mean airflow rates at all pitch conditions. Maximum phonation times for comfort and low pitches significantly decreased during posttests. Multiple regression analyses revealed significant associations between ratings of posttest physical effort and select posttest measures. Interpretation of results indicates the prolonged loud reading task was successful in vocally fatiguing most of the UVFP subjects. Key physiologic correlates of vocal fatigue, in individuals with UVFP, include further reduction of glottic efficiency, resulting in decreased regulation of glottic airflow and a temporary destabilization of speaking fundamental frequency.  相似文献

Oral breathing superficially dehydrates the airway lumen by decreasing the depth of the sol layer in humans and animals. Conversely, nasal breathing can increase the humidity of inspired air. We compared the effects of short-term oral and nasal breathing on Pth and perceived vocal effort in 20 female subjects randomly assigned to two groups: oral breathing (N = 10, age 21-32 years); nasal breathing (N = 10, age 20-36 years). We hypothesized that short-term oral breathing, but not nasal breathing, would increase Pth, and that subjects would perceive this change as an increase in vocal effort. Following 15 minutes of oral breathing, Pth increased at comfortable and low pitch (p < 0.01) with 6 of 10 subjects reporting increased vocal effort. Nasal breathing reduced Pth at all three pitches (p < 0.01), and 7 of 10 subjects reported decreased vocal effort. Over all subjects, 49% of the variance in treatment-induced change in Pth was accounted for by change in vocal effort (R = 0.70). We posit that obligatory oral breathing places healthy subjects at risk for symptoms of increased vocal effort. The facilitatory role of superficial hydration on vocal fold oscillation should be considered in biomechanical models of phonation and in the clinical prevention of laryngeal dryness.  相似文献

Although advances in techniques for image acquisition and analysis have facilitated the direct measurement of three-dimensional vocal tract air space shapes associated with specific speech phonemes, little information is available with regard to changes in three-dimensional (3-D) vocal tract shape as a function of vocal register, pitch, and loudness. In this study, 3-D images of the vocal tract during falsetto and chest register phonations at various pitch and loudness conditions were obtained using electron beam computed tomography (EBCT). Detailed measurements and differences in vocal tract configuration and formant characteristics derived from the eight measured vocal tract shapes are reported.  相似文献

Rhabdomyomas of the larynx are exceedingly rare. The incidence, sites of occurrence in the larynx, and treatment of these benign striated muscle tumors are reviewed. A case of rhabdomyoma involving the vocalis muscle is presented with magnetic resonance imaging and video-stroboscopic documentation.  相似文献

Four adult male singers produced sustained vowel phonation beginning with straight tone and changing to vibrato or exaggerated vibrato. The EMG signal from the cricothyroid muscle (CT) and the voice signal were recorded. Analysis showed that the muscle signal changed from a relative steady-state interference pattern during straight tone production to a modulated signal during either of the vibrato productions. Furthermore, for vocalization at the same frequency, the integrated muscle signal was approximately the same for straight tone and vibrato. Variability in the timing of CT modulation and the resultant FO oscillation was extensive, suggesting that other muscles may be involved in vibrato regulation.  相似文献

Vocal parenting is a pedagogical approach that views the teachingof singing to children as a nurturing process. It encompasses the development of fundamentally sound vocal technique, guidance in repertoire selection and performance practices, and concern for the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of the child as a singer, performer, and person. Role-play and storytelling are among the strategies employed to fully integrate vocal technique with the personality of the singer.  相似文献

The present article aimed at constructing a canonical geometry of the human vocal fold (VF) from subject-specific image slice data. A computer-aided design approach automated the model construction. A subject-specific geometry available in literature, three abstractions (which successively diminished in geometric detail) derived from it, and a widely used quasi two-dimensional VF model geometry were used to create computational models. The first three natural frequencies of the models were used to characterize their mechanical response. These frequencies were determined for a representative range of tissue biomechanical properties, accounting for underlying VF histology. Compared with the subject-specific geometry model (baseline), a higher degree of abstraction was found to always correspond to a larger deviation in model frequency (up to 50% in the relevant range of tissue biomechanical properties). The model we deemed canonical was optimally abstracted, in that it significantly simplified the VF geometry compared with the baseline geometry but can be recalibrated in a consistent manner to match the baseline response. Models providing only a marginally higher degree of abstraction were found to have significant deviation in predicted frequency response. The quasi two-dimensional model presented an extreme situation: it could not be recalibrated for its frequency response to match the subject-specific model. This deficiency was attributed to complex support conditions at anterior-posterior extremities of the VFs, accentuated by further issues introduced through the tissue biomechanical properties. In?creating canonical models by leveraging advances in clinical imaging techniques, the automated design procedure makes VF modeling based on subject-specific geometry more realizable.  相似文献

The physiological aim of vocal exercises is mostly understood in intuitive terms only. This article presents an attempt to document the phonatory behavior induced by a vocal exercise. An elevated vertical position of the larynx is frequently associated with hyperfunctional phonatory habits, presumably because it induces an exaggerated vocal fold adduction. Using the multichannel electroglottograph (MEGG), the laryngeal position was determined in a group of subjects who performed a voice exercise that contained extremely prolonged versions of the consonant /b:/. This exercise is used by the coauthor (N.E.) as part of a standard vocal exercise program. Two of the seven subjects were dysphonic phonastenic patients, and the rest were normal trained or untrained persons. Different attempts to calibrate the MEGG confirmed a linear relationship with larynx height, provided electrode positioning was correct. The results showed that the exercise induced substantial vertical displacements of the larynx. Comparison with larynx height during voicing of other consonants showed that the /b/, in particular, tended to lower the larynx.  相似文献

Quantifiable aspects of vocal fold vibration may be inferred by means of the electrolaryngograph. Changes in inferred vocal fold closed quotient are considered as a possible correlate of acoustic efficiency variation; automatic measures of closed quotient compare favorably with results obtained from inverse filtering of the speech pressure waveform. This article describes closed quotient measures based on electrolaryngographic analysis of 18 trained and untrained men singers, and results show a significant difference in mean vocal fold closed quotient between trained and untrained singers.  相似文献
