Toric manifolds, a topological generalization of smooth projective toric varieties, are determined by an -dimensional simple convex polytope and a function from the set of codimension-one faces into the primitive vectors of an integer lattice. Their cohomology was determined by Davis and Januszkiewicz in 1991 and corresponds with the theorem of Danilov-Jurkiewicz in the toric variety case. Recently it has been shown by Buchstaber and Ray that they generate the complex cobordism ring. We use the Adams spectral sequence to compute the -theory of all toric manifolds and certain singular toric varieties.

We introduce the notion of the crossed product of a -algebra by a Hilbert -bimodule . It is shown that given a -algebra which carries a semi-saturated action of the circle group (in the sense that is generated by the spectral subspaces and ), then is isomorphic to the crossed product . We then present our main result, in which we show that the crossed products and are strongly Morita equivalent to each other, provided that and are strongly Morita equivalent under an imprimitivity bimodule satisfying as Hilbert -bimodules. We also present a six-term exact sequence for -groups of crossed products by Hilbert -bimodules.

In this paper, we transform the problem of determining isometric immersions from into into that of solving a degenerate Monge-Ampère equation on the unit disc. By presenting one family of special solutions to the equation, we obtain a great many noncongruent examples of such isometric immersions with or without umbilic set.

In 1949, Hartman and Wintner showed that if the eigenvalue equations of a one-dimensional Schrödinger operator possess square integrable solutions, then the essential spectrum is nowhere dense. Furthermore, they conjectured that this statement could be improved and that under this condition the essential spectrum might always be void. This is shown to be false. It is proved that, on the contrary, every closed, nowhere dense set does occur as the essential spectrum of Schrödinger operators which satisfy the condition of existence of -solutions. The proof of this theorem is based on inverse spectral theory.

In Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 36 (1930), 762--772, R. Vaidyanathaswamy established a remarkable identity valid for any multiplicative arithmetic function and involving Dirichlet convolution. D. H. Lehmer (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 33 (1931), 945--952) introduced a very general class of arithmetical convolutions, called -products, which include the well-known Dirichlet products, Eckford Cohen's unitary convolutions, and in fact Narkiewicz's so-called regular -convolutions. In this paper, we establish an identical equation valid for multiplicative arithmetic functions and Lehmer's -convolutions which yields, as special cases, all known identical equations valid for the Dirichlet and unitary convolutions, besides establishing identical equations for several new convolutions.
