The -theory of toric manifolds

Toric manifolds, a topological generalization of smooth projective toric varieties, are determined by an -dimensional simple convex polytope and a function from the set of codimension-one faces into the primitive vectors of an integer lattice. Their cohomology was determined by Davis and Januszkiewicz in 1991 and corresponds with the theorem of Danilov-Jurkiewicz in the toric variety case. Recently it has been shown by Buchstaber and Ray that they generate the complex cobordism ring. We use the Adams spectral sequence to compute the -theory of all toric manifolds and certain singular toric varieties.

     

Polynomial continuity on

A mapping between Banach spaces is said to be polynomially continuous if its restriction to any bounded set is uniformly continuous for the weak polynomial topology. A Banach space has property (RP) if given two bounded sequences , we have that for every polynomial on whenever for every polynomial on ; i.e., the restriction of every polynomial on to each bounded set is uniformly sequentially continuous for the weak polynomial topology. We show that property (RP) does not imply that every scalar valued polynomial on must be polynomially continuous.

In fact, there is an -separable abelian group such that is isomorphic to but not to . We also derive some relevant information about the endomorphism ring of .

Morita equivalence for crossed products by Hilbert -bimodules

We introduce the notion of the crossed product of a -algebra by a Hilbert -bimodule . It is shown that given a -algebra which carries a semi-saturated action of the circle group (in the sense that is generated by the spectral subspaces and ), then is isomorphic to the crossed product . We then present our main result, in which we show that the crossed products and are strongly Morita equivalent to each other, provided that and are strongly Morita equivalent under an imprimitivity bimodule satisfying as Hilbert -bimodules. We also present a six-term exact sequence for -groups of crossed products by Hilbert -bimodules.

Isometric immersions from the hyperbolic space

In this paper, we transform the problem of determining isometric immersions from into into that of solving a degenerate Monge-Ampère equation on the unit disc. By presenting one family of special solutions to the equation, we obtain a great many noncongruent examples of such isometric immersions with or without umbilic set.

     

On the weak uniform convexity of

We will discuss the geometry of the unit sphere in the Banach space of integrable holomorphic quadratic differentials on a Riemann surface and answer some questions posed by L.R. Goldberg (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 118 (1993), 1179--1185).

     

Invariance of the Spectrum for Hypoelliptic Operators

We show that the spectra of the -realizations for a class of hypoelliptic (pseudo-)differential operators are independent of in an interval around depending on the growth properties of the symbol. For elliptic operators we obtain the classical boundedness interval of Fefferman; in the general case we obtain a smaller interval which is as large as one can possibly expect it to be.

Essential spectrum and -solutions of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators

In 1949, Hartman and Wintner showed that if the eigenvalue equations of a one-dimensional Schrödinger operator possess square integrable solutions, then the essential spectrum is nowhere dense. Furthermore, they conjectured that this statement could be improved and that under this condition the essential spectrum might always be void. This is shown to be false. It is proved that, on the contrary, every closed, nowhere dense set does occur as the essential spectrum of Schrödinger operators which satisfy the condition of existence of -solutions. The proof of this theorem is based on inverse spectral theory.

     

Unconditional basic sequence in -stability

This paper is concerned with unconditional basic sequences in . We prove that, under some conditions, a sequence in is a bounded unconditional basic sequence if and only if it is -stable. At last the results are applied to the shift-invariant basic sequences generated by a finite subset of , which is very important in wavelet analysis.

     

On The Homotopy Type of

We consider the homotopy type of classifying spaces , where is a finite -group, and we study the question whether or not the mod cohomology of , as an algebra over the Steenrod algebra together with the associated Bockstein spectral sequence, determine the homotopy type of . This article is devoted to producing some families of finite 2-groups where cohomological information determines the homotopy type of .

The identical equation in -products

In Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 36 (1930), 762--772, R. Vaidyanathaswamy established a remarkable identity valid for any multiplicative arithmetic function and involving Dirichlet convolution. D. H. Lehmer (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 33 (1931), 945--952) introduced a very general class of arithmetical convolutions, called -products, which include the well-known Dirichlet products, Eckford Cohen's unitary convolutions, and in fact Narkiewicz's so-called regular -convolutions. In this paper, we establish an identical equation valid for multiplicative arithmetic functions and Lehmer's -convolutions which yields, as special cases, all known identical equations valid for the Dirichlet and unitary convolutions, besides establishing identical equations for several new convolutions.
