A new phase sequence: twist grain boundary smectic C (TGBC) to smectic blue phases (BPSm) is observed in a chiral compound (S)- or (R)-1-methyloctyl 3'-fluoro-4'-(3-fluoro-4-hexadecyloxybenzoyloxy)tolane-4-carboxylate. It is the first time that a TGBC phase has been found to occur under smectic blue phases in the absence of the twist grain boundary smectic A (TGBA) phase. These phases are characterized by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray scattering.  相似文献

A series of cyclosiloxane-based cholesteric liquid crystalline (LC) polymers were synthesized from a cholesteric LC monomer cholest-5-en-3-yl(3β) 4-(2-propenyloxy)benzoate and a nematic LC monomer butyl 4-[4-(2-propenyloxy)benzoxy]benzoate. All the polymers exhibit thermotropic LC properties and show cholesteric phases. Most of the polymers display four types of phase transition behaviour corresponding to glass transition, melting point, cholesteric phase-blue phase transition and clearing point. The mesophase temperature range of the blue phases are as broad as 20°C. The blue phase was confirmed by the apperance of planar textures and cubic packings. With an increase of non-chiral component in the polymers, the clearing point decreases slightly, while the glass transition and melting temperatures change little. In the reflection spectra of the polymer series the reflected wavelength broadens and shifts to longer wavelength with increase of the non-chiral component in the polymer systems, suggesting that the helical pitch P lengthens.  相似文献

Copper(II), nickel(II) and oxovanadium(IV) complexes of 4-(4-heptyloxybenzoyloxy)-N-(S)-2-methylbutylsalicylaldimine, as well as the parent ligand, were studied by optical and DSC methods. For the first two complexes, there exist between a tightly twisted chiral nematic phase and the isotropic liquid either some blue phases or novel-type amorphous phases, with their temperature ranges depending significantly on the metal centre. For the third complex, direct isotropization takes place.  相似文献

A series of fluoro-substituted tolane derivatives: ( R )-1-methylheptyl 3-fluoro-4-(3-fluoro-4- n alkoxybenzoyloxy)tolane-4-carboxylates is reported. Some members of this series exhibit the phase sequence: Cr-SmC*-TGBC-TGBA-BPI-BPII-BPIII-I. The blue phases, the TGBA and TGBC phases and the SmC* phase were characterized in detail by microscopic observation, differential scanning calorimetry, helical pitch measurements, X-ray structural analysis and electro-optical study. The blue phases directly next to the TGBA phase were shown to be a new type of blue phase exhibiting smectic ordering. A commensurate TGBC phase with constant number of slabs per pitch was observed.  相似文献

A homologous series of chiral materials, (R)-2-pentyl (S)-2-(6-(4-(4'-alkoxyphenyl)benzoyloxy)-2-naphthyl)propionates (R,S)PmPBNP (m = 7-14), derived from a naphthalene ring as part of the core structure in conjunction with a chiral tail containing two stereocentres has been synthesized for the investigation. The twist grain boundary smectic A (TGBA) and smectic C (TGB*C) phases were characterized by the microscopic textures of compounds packed in two untreated glass slides, Cano wedge cell, or homogeneously aligned cell. It was found that the occurrence of these phases depend remarkably on the nature of alkyl chain length m; in the case of shorter alkyl chain length (m = 7-10), the TGBA phase behaves as a metastable-like phase mediated between N and SA phases in a short temperature range, whereas in the longer chain length (m' 11-14), both the TGBA and TGBC phases become thermodynamically stable phases with a wide temperature range. Consequently, this series of chiral materials resulted in two different mesophase sequences: N-TGBA-SA-SCand N-TGBA-TGBC. A kind of parquet texture displaying two types of domain with different relative directions of the smectic layer normal was found in the S phase from the materials (m = 9-14) packed in 2 μm homogeneously aligned cells and cooled down from the isotropic liquid without applying an electric field. The magnitudes of spontaneous polarization (Ps) in the SC and TGBC phases showed that the Ps values are nearly the same for all compounds at the same temperature below the Curie point. Dielectric measurements revealed no significant occurrence of soft mode switching in the TGBA phase.  相似文献

X-ray investigations of nine smectogenic substances exhibiting the smectic Ad, A1 and crystalline E phases were performed at various temperatures. X-ray patterns yielded the layer thickness d (Ad, A1 phases) and orthorhombic unit cell parameters (E phase). The layer thickness of the Ad phase in 4'-n-alkyl-4-cyanobiphenyls (nCBs) has different temperature coefficients for shorter (n = 8-10) and longer (n = 12-14) members, which is explained as resulting from two competing effects: a weakening with temperature of the intermolecular association energy that favours an increase in d, and the increasing number of conformers which reduces the molecular length. A small anisotropy of the thermal expansivity in the smectic phases was found by comparing the linear quantity d(T) with the linearized bulk characteristic of the system, V-3(T), where V = 1/ρ is the specific volume, ρ is the density. Differences between the slopes of the two quantities are less in the case of the A1 phase of two nDBTs (5-n-alkyl-2-(4'-isothiocyanatophenyl)-1,3-dioxanes). The present X-ray data and recent results of studies of the low frequency relaxation process in these compounds (under atmospheric as well as elevated pressures) give a consistent picture of molecular reorientations around the short axes in the smectic phases.  相似文献

The mesophase characterization of three stereoisomeric multihydroxy compounds, the 1, 2(S), 3(R), 4(R)-, 1, 2(R), 3(S), 4(R)-, and 1, 2(S), 3(S), 4(R)-ico-sanetetrols, as well as of an octadecafuranose derivative has been carried out by means of polarizing microscopy, X-ray diffraction etc. The four multiols with their very long flexible alkyl chains are mono-thermomesomorphic; their single mesophases are miscible with each other, with a typical carbohydrate derivative, and are characterized by X-ray diffraction having a layer structure without order in it. The phase transition data of the three icosanetetrols are strongly dependent on their stereochemistry. The measurements of the refractive indices of one of the tetrols show a typical behaviour known for SA phases or for lamellar phases, i.e. the sign of the birefringence is positive.  相似文献

High resolution adiabatic scanning calorimetry (ASC) was employed to study the phase behaviour exhibited by the chiral liquid crystal material (R)-1-methylheptyl 3-fluoro-4- (3-fluoro-4-octadecyloxybenzoyloxy)tolane-4-carboxylate (FH/FH/HH-18BTMHC). We report on the heat capacity of the different phases and phase transitions as well as the enthalpy changes of the material showing a phase sequence Cr-SmC*-TGBC-TGBA-BPI-BPIIBPIII-I. While the presence of the BPI phase was observed in previous DSC studies only on cooling the sample, our ASC measurements detected this phase also in the heating runs at sufficiently slow scanning rates. Indications of smectic order still present in the blue phases, as recently reported from X-ray scattering experiments, are also observed.  相似文献

The mesomorphic properties of the N*, S*c and higher ordered smectic phases have been investigated for a homologous series of 4-[(S)-2-chlor-3-methylbutanoyloxy]-4'-(4-n-alkyloxy-benzoyloxy)biphenyls. They have been characterized by optical texture observation, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small angle X-ray scattering and electro-optic measurements. The compounds exhibit a strongly twisted cholesteric phase and smectic phases with large spontaneous polarization and tilt angle values. One or two higher ordered, monotropic smectic phases were found which significantly differ in their rotational viscosity.  相似文献

A series of trifluoro-substituted benzoate derivatives: (S)-1-ethylheptyl 4-[4-(4-alkyloxy-3- fluorobenzoyloxy)-3-fluorobenzoyloxy]-2-fluorobenzoates is reported. The short chain members (n = 8 to n = 11) display a direct SmC*A-SmA transition, whereas for longer chains a SmC* phase appears, but no ferrielectric phases are present, and a direct SmCA*-SmC* transition is obtained. The mesomorphic properties were studied by optical microscopy and DSC, and by electro-optical, helical pitch and optical rotatory power measurements. The effect of the number and position of the fluoro substituents, and the influence of the chiral moiety on the mesomorphic behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

Binary mixtures are composed of compounds belonging to the 4'cyanobiphenyl-4-yl 4'-n -alkylbiphenyl-4 carboxylate homologous series and halogenophenyl 4-(trans-4-n-decylcyclohexyl)benzoate (10XPCHB) have been studied. Compounds CBnAB are smectic A1 for n ≤ 7 and smectic Ad for n ≥ 8; compounds 10XPCHB are smectic A, only. It was found that the SAd phase of compounds CBnAB exhibits ideal miscibility with the SA1 phase of compounds 10XTCHB, and that the SA1 phases of both compounds show abnormal behaviour. The SA1 phase of compounds CBnAB is destabilized and the range of the SA1 phase is enhanced on the side of 10XPCHB. The reasons for this behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

The chiral swallow-tailed liquid crystals, 1-ethylpropyl (R)-2-[4-(4'-alkoxybiphenylcarbonyloxy)-phenoxy]propionates, EPmPBPP (m = 8-12), were prepared by using chiral (S)-lactic acid with 3-pentanol as starting materials. Mesophases and their corresponding transition temperatures were determined by polarizing microscopic textures and DSC. The results showed that all the chiral materials exhibited enantiotropic BP, N*, TGBA*, SmA*, and SmC* phases. Spontaneous polarization, dielectric constant and electro-optical response for the materials in the ferroelectric SmC* phase were investigated. It was noted that the electro-optical response of transmittance versus applied voltage obtained from the ferroelectric phase of material EPmPBPP (m = 10) displayed V-shaped switching, while that of other materials displayed the typical characteristics of ferroelectric hysteresis switching or U-shaped switching.  相似文献

We report the results of computer simulation studies for a bulk system composed of chiral particles interacting via the Gay-Berne potential and an additive chiral potential. Using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations in the NVT ensemble, the chirality-temperature plane of the phase diagram was studied at different points by a variation of the chirality parameter c describing the strength of the chiral potential. Additionally to the well-known isotropic, nematic and smectic phases of the Gay-Berne fluid, we localized regions of cholesteric phase. For large values of the chirality parameter we also observed blue phases. Furthermore, when starting from a cholesteric phase and decreasing the temperature at constant c, we obtained a phase region showing characteristics of the recently discovered helical smectic A* phase. All phases have been characterized by correlation functions, order parameters, and visual representations of selected configurations. All results of the simulation are limited by the small system size of N = 256 molecules and the use of periodic boundary conditions.  相似文献

A homologous series of chiral compounds, (R)-6-(3-alkoxy-2-methylpropionyloxy)-2-naphthyl 4-alkoxybenzoates, nMPNmB (n = 2-5, m = 6-13), derived from methyl (R)-3-hydroxy-2-methylpropionate, was prepared for the study of mesormorphic phases. The mesophases were determined mainly by their microscopic textures and identified by the racemic modification. The results show that most of these compounds displayed frustrated phases BP, TGBA* and TGBC*, and the N*phase. Moreover, the thermal stability of the frustrated phases is significantly affected by the length of the alkyl chain in both achiral and chiral groups of the compounds. The spontaneous polarization in the TGBC* phase of compounds nMPN10B in a surface-stabilized geometry was measured, giving Ps values of about 20 nC cm-2.  相似文献

Binary mixtures have been studied of polar compounds with smectic A1 phases belonging to the following series: 4-cyanobiphenyl 4-yl 4'-n-alkylbiphenyl-4-carboxylate (CBnAB) and 4-(trans-4-n-decylcyclohexyl) benzoates (10XPCHB) with X = F, NCS, COCH3. In these systems a strong destablization of the smectic A1 phase is observed on the side of the CBnAB component and an enhancement of the smectic A1 phase on the side of 10XPCHB. It is shown that the anomalous behaviour of the mixtures of two A1 smectics with a similar layer spacing is due to the dimerization of CBnAB in the matrix of 10XPCHB which is of lower polarity.  相似文献

A homologous series of chiral thiolactate liquid crystals, alkyl 2-[4-(4-decyloxyphenyl)benzoyloxyphenyloxy]thiopropionates, ADBPT-n (n=2-6), was prepared from (R)-2-(4-hydroxyphenoxy)propionic acid. Structural effects on the mesomorphic and physical properties were investigated in terms of variation in the length of alkyl chain attached to the thiolactate group. The mesophases and their corresponding transition temperatures were identified by polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Compound ADBPT-4 exhibited SmA* and SmC* phases, whereas other compounds in the series exhibited the SmA* phase along with unidentified SmX1* and SmX2* phases. The maximum Ps value measured for ADBPT-4 in the SmC* phase was 17.5 nC cm-2, suggesting the polarization of the material is rather low. The tilt angles were also measured, reaching a maximum of 48 degree.  相似文献

A series of bimetallic, trigonal bipyramidal clusters of type {[Co(N-N)(2)](3)[Fe(CN)(6)](2)} are reported. The reaction of {Co(tmphen)(2)}(2+) with [Fe(CN)(6)](3)(-) in MeCN affords {[Co(tmphen)(2)](3)[Fe(CN)(6)](2)} (1). The cluster can exist in three different solid-state phases: a red crystalline phase, a blue solid phase obtained by exposure of the red crystals to moisture, and a red solid phase obtained by desolvation of the blue solid phase in vacuo. The properties of cluster 1 are extremely sensitive to both temperature and solvent content in each of these phases. Variable-temperature X-ray crystallography; (57)Fe Mossbauer, vibrational, and optical spectroscopies; and magnetochemical studies were used to study the three phases of 1 and related compounds, Na{[Co(tmphen)(2)](3)[Fe(CN)(6)](2)}(ClO(4))(2) (2), {[Co(bpy)(2)](3)[Fe(CN)(6)](2)}[Fe(CN)(6)](1/3) (3), and {[Ni(tmphen)(2)](3)[Fe(CN)(6)](2)} (4). The combined structural and spectroscopic investigation of 1-4 leads to the unambiguous conclusion that 1 can exist in different electronic isomeric forms, {Co(III)(2)Co(II)Fe(II)(2)} (1A), {Co(III)Co(II)(2)Fe(III)Fe(II)} (1B), and {Co(II)(3)Fe(III)(2)} (1C), and that it can undergo a charge-transfer-induced spin transition (CTIST). This is the first time that such a phenomenon has been observed for a Co/Fe molecule.  相似文献

Photochromic acrylates containing both biphenylene and spiro-oxazine moieties with a chiral substituent and the related polymers were prepared and yielded photochromic chiral liquid crystalline systems. The photochromic acrylates containing both an undecamethylene group and a (2S, 3S)-2-chloro-3-methylpentanoyloxy group (A11SOP) or a (-)-menthoxyacetoxy group (A11SOM) gave a supercooled mesophase; the latter reflected right-handed visible light (blue colour) at room temperature. On the other hand, the photochromic acrylate containing both the (R)-(-)-2-methylpropylene and (2S, 3S)-2-chloro-3-methylpentanoyloxy groups (A3SOP) showed no mesophase. The related homopolymers, PA11SOP and PA11SOM, did not exhibit mesophases because of steric hindrance between the side groups of the polymers. However, only PA11SOM exhibited shear-induced birefringence under 100-104°C. Several copolymers consisting of the nematogenic monomer, 4-[4-(6-acryloyloxyhexyloxy)benzoyloxy]benzonitrile (A6CN), and A11SOP or A11SOM possessed a smectic phase due to reduction of the steric hindrance between the potentially smectogenic A11SOP or A11SOM moieties.  相似文献

A series of optically pure mesogenic ester precursors, and the malolactonate monomers containing mesogenic alcohols obtained from them were prepared and polymerized to homopolymers and copolymers. The liquid-crystalline properties of the precursors, monomers and polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy and wide angle X-ray diffraction. The liquid-crystalline properties of the chiral mesogenic precursors and monomers were only slightly influenced by the chemical structure, configuration and the alkyl spacer length of the mesogenic alcohol substituent of the ester. The precursor, 1-[6-(4'-hexyloxy-4-biphenylyl)oxyhexyl] hydrogen (S)-O-mesylmalate (V-(S)-6) formed smectic E and smectic A phases on melting, while the monomer, 6-(4'-hexyloxy-4-biphenylyl)oxyhexyl (R)-malolactonate (II-(R)-6) showed only a crystal-isotropic phase transition. In contrast, the homopolymer of the latter exhibited a chiral smectic C phase. Copolymers from 2-(4'-hexyloxy-4-biphenylyl)oxyethyl (R)-malolactonate (II-(R)-2) also formed chiral smectic C phases.  相似文献
