Substrate effect, slippage, and shear inhomogeneity in the shear-induced crystallization of an isotactic polypropylene are studied by rheological and optical experiments. Significant wall slip that reflects the polymer chain desorption from the wall was observed for the supercooled isotactic polypropylene (iPP) melt at 131 $^{\circ }$ C in both the pre-shear and the subsequent small-amplitude oscillatory shear that monitor the crystallization of iPP. Crystallization of the iPP melt on aluminum substrate is faster than that on stainless-steel substrate with the same pre-shearing condition. Because the surface energy of aluminum plate is higher than that of stainless-steel plate, when using the aluminum plates, the slip during the pre-shearing is smaller; thus, the real shear rate (or shear strain, shear work) exerted to the melt is higher and so is the shear-induced nucleation density. By using the observed nucleation density and the estimated nucleus growth rate, the Kolmogoroff equation can yield correct orders of magnitudes of crystallization rates of iPP. Assuming that higher shear rate induces higher nucleation density in the iPP melt, the shear inhomogeneity during the pre-shearing can be inferred based on the optical observation on the crystallized iPP samples.  相似文献

Solder pastes used in surface mount soldering techniques (SMT) are very complex suspensions containing high volumes of metallic powder in a carrier fluid. The rheological complexity results largely from the carrier fluid itself, which is a suspension of colloidal particles. In this work, we have characterized the rheological properties of a typical carrier fluid and its solder paste containing 64 vol.% metallic powder. A six-blade vane geometry was used to avoid wall slip and sample fracture. All measurements were carried out following pre-shearing and rest time in order to obtain reproducible results. Steady shear experiments showed that the solder paste was highly shear-thinning and thixotropic. In oscillatory shear, the linear viscoelastic domain was found to be very narrow for both the suspending fluid and the paste. Frequency sweep tests in the linear domain revealed a gel-like structure with a nearly constant G′ for the suspending fluid and a slightly increasing G′ for the solder paste. From creep experiments, a yield stress of about 40 Pa was determined for the suspending fluid at temperatures between 25 and 40°C, and of 100 Pa at 4°C. A much larger yield stress, 480 Pa, was determined for the solder paste at 25°C.  相似文献

The effect of initial microstructural deformation, alignment, and morphology on the response of wormlike micelle solutions in transient uniaxial extensional flows is investigated using a pre-shear device attached to a filament stretching rheometer. In filament stretching experiments, increasing the strength and the duration of the pre-shear just before stretch is found to delay the onset of strain hardening. In these experiments, the wormlike micelle solution filaments fail through a rupture near the axial midplane. The value of the elastic tensile stress at rupture is found to decrease with increasing pre-shear rate and duration. The most dramatic effects are observed at shear rates for which shear banding has been independently observed. The reduction in the strain hardening suggests that pre-shear before filament stretching might break down the wormlike micelles reducing their size before stretch. Strain hardening is also observed in capillary breakup rheometry experiments; however, the pre-sheared wormlike micelle solutions strain harden faster, achieve larger steady-state extensional viscosities and an increase in the extensional relaxation time with increasing shear rate and duration. The difference between the response of the wormlike micelles in filament stretching and capillary breakup experiments demonstrates the sensitivity of these self-assembling micelle networks to pre-conditioning.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to propose design criteria, based on rheological characterisation for improving drill-in fluids performance. In particular, it reports an example in which rheological approaches helped improve drill-in fluids resistance to temperature. As a starting system a commercial drill-in fluid containing xanthan gum and calcium carbonate was chosen and evaluated. Different samples were then prepared by changing the initial formulation in order to increase the system's stability to temperature. Drill-in fluids' performance have been compared by considering their “damaging potential”, filtration properties and, “cakes”. All drill-in fluids have been tested before and after aging at a given temperature with “hot rolling tests”. The systems' gel structure was characterized by measuring dynamic moduli (G′ and G′′) in the linear viscoelastic range and all samples were compared by evaluating their “melting” temperature and gel network strength during time cure tests. The results obtained from this work suggest that the rheological tests carried out on the whole drill-in fluid can provide insights into fluids' damaging potential and “cake” structure. In particular, rheology proved to be able to provide quantitative information about gel strength and temperature stability that permitted one to improve drill-in fluids' formulation in order to preclude formation damage and to meet industrial requirements. The tunable rheological properties of magnetorheological (MR) materials at high shear rates are studied using a piston-driven flow-mode-type rheometer. The proposed method provides measurement of the apparent viscosity and yield stress of MR fluids for a shear rate range of 50 to 40,000 s−1. The rheological properties of a commercial MR fluid, as well as a newly developed MR polymeric gel, and a ferrofluid-based MR fluid are investigated. The results for apparent viscosity and dynamic and static shear stresses under different applied magnetic fields are reported.  相似文献

We studied strain effects on the crystallization of a series of isotactic polypropylenes (iPP) of various molecular weights using rheology, rheo-optical measurements, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The samples were pre-sheared and then crystallized both at the same temperature. Transmitted light intensity measurements demonstrate that the effect of pre-shear on crystallization rate keeps increasing with strain up to surprisingly large strain levels, much beyond strains that are required to reach steady shear flow (at given We). Crystal orientation sets in at a total strain of about or higher. WAXD and DSC measurements corroborated the light transmission results. Total shear strains to 1000 were applied to the iPP samples at the beginning of a crystallization experiment, after the samples had reached the crystallization temperature of 145°C (under-cooled state). A constant Weissenberg number We=1 (We is defined as the product of shear rate and a relaxation time) was maintained for all pre-shearing of this study. We=1 corresponds to the onset of shear thinning in steady shear. Deborah number values were low, De<<1, indicating that steady shear flow had been reached in all pre-shearing runs (De is defined as the ratio of relaxation time to pre-shearing time). Further studies are needed at high We as there are indications that strain requirements are much reduced at high We. A fundamental understanding is still missing.  相似文献

We use a modified filament stretching rheometer to quantify the influence of a known controlled pre-shear history on the transient extensional viscosity of a dilute polymer solution. Two different types of pre-deformation are explored; both influence the subsequent stretching significantly, albeit in opposite ways. Small-amplitude oscillatory straining parallel to the direction of stretching enhances strain hardening and accelerates the tensile stress growth toward the steady-state value. Conversely, steady torsional shearing orthogonal to the direction of stretching retards strain hardening and results in a delayed approach to steady-state elongational flow. In both cases, the final steady-state extensional viscosity is the same as that observed with no pre-shearing. Calculations using a finitely extensible nonlinear elastic Peterlin dumbbell model qualitatively capture the trends observed in experiments, enabling interpretation of these observations in terms of the degree of polymer chain stretching imposed by the flow before extensional stretching.  相似文献

This article examines the extensional flow and viscosity and the converging–diverging geometry as the basis of the peculiar viscoelastic behavior in porous media. The modified Bautista–Manero model, which successfully describes elasticity, thixotropic time dependency and shear-thinning, was used for modeling the flow of viscoelastic materials which also show thixotropic attributes. An algorithm, originally proposed by Philippe Tardy, that employs this model to simulate steady-state time-dependent flow was implemented in a non-Newtonian flow simulation code using pore-scale modeling. The simulation results using two topologically-complex networks confirmed the importance of the extensional flow and converging–diverging geometry on the behavior of non-Newtonian fluids in porous media. The analysis also identified a number of correct trends (qualitative and quantitative) and revealed the effect of various fluid and flow parameters on the flow process. The impact of some numerical parameters was also assessed and verified.  相似文献

The vitreous humour (VH) is a complex biofluid that occupies a large portion of the eyeball between the lens and the retina, and exhibits non-Newtonian rheological properties that are key for its function in the eye. It is often possible to distinguish two different phases in VH, known as liquid and gel phases (Sebag J Eye 1: 254–262, 1987). In this work, we present a detailed rheological characterisation of the two phases of the VH under shear and extensional flow conditions. Healthy New Zealand rabbit eyes were used to measure the surface tension and the shear and extensional rheological properties of VH in different phase conformations and at different times after dissection. The results show that VH liquid phase exhibits a surface tension of 47.8 mN/m, a shear thinning behaviour reaching a viscosity plateau around 10?3 Pa s for shear rates above ~1000 s?1, and an average relaxation time of 9.7 ms in extensional flow. Interestingly, both VH phases present higher storage modulus than loss modulus, and the measurements performed with VH gel phase 4?±?1 h after dissection exhibit the highest moduli values. The compliance measurements for the gel phase show a viscoelastic gel behaviour and that compliance values decrease substantially with time after dissection. Our results show that the two VH phases exhibit viscoelastic behaviour, but with distinct rheological characteristics, consistent with a gel phase mostly composed of collagen entangled by hyaluronan and a second phase mainly composed of hyaluronan in aqueous solution.  相似文献

活性流体在用于开发新材料方面具有巨大潜力, 满足这一需求就要定量掌握活性流体所表现的特殊力学行为, 特别是流变行为. 扩展布朗运动方程, 建立自驱动活性粒子的运动模型, 基于反向非平衡法确定活性流体的黏度, 考察活性粒子体积分数、直行速度和转向扩散系数对活性流体流变行为的影响规律, 确定活性流体特殊流变行为的形成机理. 结果表明, 活性流体的流变曲线可被划分为黏度下降区、过渡区和牛顿区; 活性粒子体积分数越高, 活性流体的非牛顿特性越显著, 活性粒子的直行运动引起活性流体在低剪切速率区域黏度下降, 直行运动和转向运动的耦合作用导致中剪切速率区域流变曲线非单调变化, 活性粒子频繁发生转向运动会导致活性流体非牛顿特性受到抑制; 活性流体的宏观流变学特性和粒子的涨落直接相关, 活性粒子体积分数越高、直行速度越快和转向扩散系数越小, 活性流体中活性粒子越容易产生显著的涨落; 低剪切速率区域内活性粒子涨落明显, 随着剪切速率增大, 活性粒子的涨落逐渐被削弱, 粒子的聚集结构不断被破坏, 最终体系的流变行为类似一般被动流体.   相似文献

This paper re-examines the 'proof' of Cheng and Evans (1965) that the equilibrium flow curve of a thixotropic fluid has a positive slope, and shows that the slope can indeed be negative in parts. The implication of this on thixotropic behaviour in viscometers is described. Such thixotropic fluids can develop shear banding in wide-gap viscometers in common with many other materials, a brief survey of which is given. Additionally, the interrelationship of the Cross and Sisko fluids as models of thixotropy is examined, leading to the creation of a new class of thixotropic models.  相似文献

Screen-printing is a cost-effective method for the mass manufacture of zirconia-based solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and oxygen separation membranes. The present work outlines an investigation into the leveling, thixotropic, and screen-printing characteristics of concentrated zirconia inks by a variety of rheological and imaging methods. A combination of viscosity, shear rate jump experiments, creep and recovery analysis, and yield stress measurements were used to assess ink thixotropy. Oscillatory rheometry and scanning electron microscopy/optical microscopy revealed a consistent effect of ethyl cellulose (binder) content upon the thixotropic and leveling characteristics of zirconia inks. While the yield stress (τ 0), extent of recovery R(%), and rate of recovery (K) increase with increasing binder content, so did the surface roughness and thickness of the screen-printed films. Increasing the binder content not only increases the network strength of the thick films but also leads to increased leveling time. As a result, rheological modifiers are proposed to be necessary to improve the leveling characteristics of zirconia inks without losing the green strength of the thick films.  相似文献

The basic rheological relations for the motion of viscoelastic media and a thixotropic viscoelastic medium in a constant longitudinal velocity gradient field were developed in [1] for the case of plane flow with a stagnation point. The results of that study showed that, in contrast with simple shear deformation, in the case of uniaxial extension steady-state flow of the liquid is not possible after reaching a deformation rate exceeding some critical value, and the liquid will undergo quasibrittle failure. In this case the approximation of the rheological relations by the Maxwell equation gives good qualitative agreement with the behavior of media of a more complex rheological structure. Below we investigate the kinematic and dynamic characteristics of liquid motion in a longitudinal velocity gradient field which is not constant in time, and we study some particular cases using as an example a Maxwellian liquid. The results of the study may be used to analyze the technological processes of forming and drawing fibers, and also for determining the rheological parameters of polymers by the extension method proposed by Kargin and Sogolova [2].  相似文献

Three-dimensional network structures can be built up in disperse systems due to long-range colloidal interactions between the dispersed particles. The rheological behaviour of such coagulation structures has been studied by means of creep and recovery experiments at low shear stresses, i.e. by measuring the shear strain as a function of time under constant stress and after removal of stress. Measurements of this type give insight into the elastic and viscous deformations and the retardation times necessary to reach equilibrium or steady-state conditions.Results obtained with dispersions of pigments in polymer solutions and with monodisperse polymer latexes indicate the existence of an equilibrium state at low shear stresses with a predominant elastic deformation and a high viscosity suggesting that the disperse systems investigated do not behave exactly as rigid gels but apparently exhibit a dynamic equilibrium of structural break-down and formation under applied stress. This behaviour is approximately described by a 4-parameter-model with an instantaneous and a steady-state compliance, one retardation time, and a viscosity.At higher shear stresses thixotropic structural break-down occurs resulting in a transition from the rheological behaviour described here to a liquid-like state with a comparatively low viscosity. In this stress range the viscoelastic properties become strongly time-dependent.These measurements give evidence of the presence of two types of deformation: an instantaneous, purely elastic deformation attributable to the unperturbed coagulation structure and the creep-recovery behaviour of an elastic liquid apparently related to the breaking and re-forming of bonds.  相似文献

The present study proposes a structural model to describe the thixotropic behavior of colloidal dispersions. This model uses structural viscosity and elasticity as internal parameters, and predicts the evolution of shear stress when shear rate varies over time. Viscosity represents the structural level of colloidal aggregates and is dependent upon their alignment. Changes in alignment are linked to changes in shear rate, are regarded as instantaneous and are not believed to cause thixotropic behavior. Only changes in the structural level or structural viscosity and in the elastic deformation of colloidal aggregates cause measurable thixotropic behavior. Variations in structural viscosity over time, and at a fixed shear rate, follow a first-order kinetic equation based on two characteristic thixotropic times. This model incorporates several parameters, which are fitted independently by the appropriate rheological tests, in order to avoid any mathematical coupling. This model has been tested in 3 wt% Laponite aqueous dispersions using different ionic strengths.  相似文献

用HAAKE流变仪确定了9种具有不同稠化剂结构的润滑脂和7种具有不同基础油粘度及稠化剂含量的锂基脂的流变参考,考察了稠化剂的结构和含量,以及温度、基础油粘度睡剪切时间对流变参数的影响,对9种脂的触变性作了对比研究。结果表明:这种润滑脂的强度极限均随温度升高而降低,但其塑性粘度和塑性指数的变化均无规律性,不含添加剂的不同润滑脂随稠化剂含量的增大和基础油粘度的减小,其强度极限和塑性粘度都逐渐增大,而塑  相似文献

Four constant viscosity, highly elastic fluids of different viscosity and elasticity levels are presented. The viscosity ranges from 4 × 10?3 to 5.0 Pa s and the Maxwell relaxation time varies from 0.09 to 4.5 s. The steady and dynamic shear properties are determined. These fluids comply with the requirements of the simple fluid theory except for theG′ andN 1/2 data where a slight deviation is observed. The results suggest the possibility of preparing a wide range of constant viscosity elastic fluids with specific values of viscosity and relaxation time by manipulating polymer molecular parameters as well as polymer concentration, solvent viscosity and salt addition. The effects of each of these parameters on the rheological behaviour are examined.  相似文献

The results are discussed of rheological studies of coal tars with different concentrations of substances insoluble in toluene at periodical, steady-state and combined periodical-steady shear deformations in a wide range of deformation frequencies, rates and amplitudes in the temperature region from 223 to 333 K. The temperatures of structural and mechanical glassingT g , the activation energies of viscous flow and initial viscoelastic constants of these systems have been determined. Temperature and temperature-frequency dependencies of dynamical parameters have been obtained, the pre-steady-state and the steady-state flow modes of permanent deformation have been studied and thixotropic parameters have been evaluated at the combined action of vibration and permanent deformation.  相似文献

A thixotropic fluid with a viscosity dependent on a structural parameter, which satisfies a very simple kinetic equation, is examined. The stability and evolution of shear flows of such a fluid are investigated. Some classes of problems for which approximate solutions can be obtained are considered. Solutions are obtained for problems of changes in structure in oscillatory Couette flows. The apparent viscoelasticity of thixotropic fluids is analyzed.
