There is a well-developed theory of weakly symmetric Riemannian manifolds. Here it is shown that several results in the Riemannian case are also valid for weakly symmetric pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, but some require additional hypotheses. The topics discussed are homogeneity, geodesic completeness, the geodesic orbit property, weak symmetries, and the structure of the nilradical of the isometry group. Also, we give a number of examples of weakly symmetric pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, some mirroring the Riemannian case and some indicating the problems in extending Riemannian results to weakly symmetric pseudo-Riemannian spaces.  相似文献

A Riemannian g.o. manifold is a homogeneous Riemannian manifold (M,g) on which every geodesic is an orbit of a one-parameter group of isometries. It is known that every simply connected Riemannian g.o. manifold of dimension ?5 is naturally reductive. In dimension 6 there are simply connected Riemannian g.o. manifolds which are in no way naturally reductive, and their full classification is known (including compact examples). In dimension 7, just one new example has been known up to now (namely, a Riemannian nilmanifold constructed by C. Gordon). In the present paper we describe compact irreducible 7-dimensional Riemannian g.o. manifolds (together with their “noncompact duals”) which are in no way naturally reductive.  相似文献

Given a compact symmetric space, M, we obtain the mean exit time function from a principal orbit, for a Brownian particle starting and moving in a generalized ball whose boundary is the principal orbit. We also obtain the mean exit time flmction of a tube of radius r around special totally geodesic submanifolds P of M. Finally we give a comparison result for the mean exit time function of tubes around submanifolds in Riemannian manifolds, using these totally geodesic submanifolds in compact symmetric spaces as a model.  相似文献

We study harmonic Riemannian maps on locally conformal Kaehler manifolds (lcK manifolds). We show that if a Riemannian holomorphic map between lcK manifolds is harmonic, then the Lee vector field of the domain belongs to the kernel of the Riemannian map under a condition. When the domain is Kaehler, we prove that a Riemannian holomorphic map is harmonic if and only if the lcK manifold is Kaehler. Then we find similar results for Riemannian maps between lcK manifolds and Sasakian manifolds. Finally, we check the constancy of some maps between almost complex (or almost contact) manifolds and almost product manifolds.  相似文献

Natural mechanical systems describing the motion of a particle on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold of revolution in the field of a central smooth potential are studied. A complete classification of such Riemannian manifolds and potentials on them satisfying the strengthened Bertrand property, i.e., any orbit not contained in any meridian is closed, is obtained.  相似文献

We are concerned with the global weak rigidity of the Gauss–Codazzi–Ricci (GCR) equations on Riemannian manifolds and the corresponding isometric immersions of Riemannian manifolds into the Euclidean spaces. We develop a unified intrinsic approach to establish the global weak rigidity of both the GCR equations and isometric immersions of the Riemannian manifolds, independent of the local coordinates, and provide further insights of the previous local results and arguments. The critical case has also been analyzed. To achieve this, we first reformulate the GCR equations with div-curl structure intrinsically on Riemannian manifolds and develop a global, intrinsic version of the div-curl lemma and other nonlinear techniques to tackle the global weak rigidity on manifolds. In particular, a general functional-analytic compensated compactness theorem on Banach spaces has been established, which includes the intrinsic div-curl lemma on Riemannian manifolds as a special case. The equivalence of global isometric immersions, the Cartan formalism, and the GCR equations on the Riemannian manifolds with lower regularity is established. We also prove a new weak rigidity result along the way, pertaining to the Cartan formalism, for Riemannian manifolds with lower regularity, and extend the weak rigidity results for Riemannian manifolds with corresponding different metrics.  相似文献

We study in this paper previously defined by V.N. Berestovskii and C.P. Plaut δ-homogeneous spaces in the case of Riemannian manifolds and prove that they constitute a new proper subclass of geodesic orbit (g.o.) spaces with non-negative sectional curvature, which properly includes the class of all normal homogeneous Riemannian spaces.  相似文献

We introduce anti-invariant Riemannian submersions from almost Hermitian manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. We give an example, investigate the geometry of foliations which are arisen from the definition of a Riemannian submersion and check the harmonicity of such submersions. We also find necessary and sufficient conditions for a Langrangian Riemannian submersion, a special anti-invariant Riemannian submersion, to be totally geodesic. Moreover, we obtain decomposition theorems for the total manifold of such submersions.  相似文献

We construct Gauss–Weingarten-like formulas and define O’Neill’s tensors for Riemannian maps between Riemannian manifolds. By using these new formulas, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for Riemannian maps to be totally geodesic. Then we introduce semi-invariant Riemannian maps from almost Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, give examples and investigate the geometry of leaves of the distributions defined by such maps. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for semi-invariant maps to be totally geodesic and find decomposition theorems for the total manifold. Finally, we give a classification result for semi-invariant Riemannian maps with totally umbilical fibers.  相似文献

Riemannian cubics are curves that generalise cubic polynomials to arbitrary Riemannian manifolds, in the same way that geodesics generalise straight lines. Considering that geodesics can be extended indefinitely in any complete manifold, we ask whether Riemannian cubics can also be extended indefinitely. We find that there are always exceptions in Riemannian manifolds with strictly negative sectional curvature. On the other hand, we show that Riemannian cubics can always be extended in complete locally symmetric Riemannian manifolds of non-negative curvature.  相似文献

The authors give a short survey of previous results on generalized normal homogeneous (δ-homogeneous, in other terms) Riemannian manifolds, forming a new proper subclass of geodesic orbit spaces with nonnegative sectional curvature, which properly includes the class of all normal homogeneous Riemannian manifolds. As a continuation and an application of these results, they prove that the family of all compact simply connected indecomposable generalized normal homogeneous Riemannian manifolds with positive Euler characteristic, which are not normal homogeneous, consists exactly of all generalized flag manifolds Sp(l)/U(1)⋅Sp(l−1)=CP2l−1, l?2, supplied with invariant Riemannian metrics of positive sectional curvature with the pinching constants (the ratio of the minimal sectional curvature to the maximal one) in the open interval (1/16,1/4). This implies very unusual geometric properties of the adjoint representation of Sp(l), l?2. Some unsolved questions are suggested.  相似文献

We present the notion of weakly metrically regular functions on manifolds. Then, a sufficient condition for a real valued function defined on a complete Riemannian manifold to be weakly metrically regular is obtained, and two optimization problems on Riemannian manifolds are considered. Moreover, we present a generalization of the Palais–Smale condition for lower semicontinuous functions defined on manifolds. Then, we use this notion to obtain necessary conditions of optimality for a general minimization problem on complete Riemannian manifolds.  相似文献

In this paper, we study Perelman’s W{{\mathcal W}} -entropy formula for the heat equation associated with the Witten Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds via the Bakry–Emery Ricci curvature. Under the assumption that the m-dimensional Bakry–Emery Ricci curvature is bounded from below, we prove an analogue of Perelman’s and Ni’s entropy formula for the W{\mathcal{W}} -entropy of the heat kernel of the Witten Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds with some natural geometric conditions. In particular, we prove a monotonicity theorem and a rigidity theorem for the W{{\mathcal W}} -entropy on complete Riemannian manifolds with non-negative m-dimensional Bakry–Emery Ricci curvature. Moreover, we give a probabilistic interpretation of the W{\mathcal{W}} -entropy for the heat equation of the Witten Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds, and for the Ricci flow on compact Riemannian manifolds.  相似文献

Generalizing results of Cohn-Vossen and Gromoll, Meyer for Riemannian manifolds and Hawking and Penrose for Lorentzian manifolds, we use Morse index theory techniques to show that if the integral of the Ricci curvature of the tangent vector field of a complete geodesic in a Riemannian manifold or of a complete nonspacelike geodesic in a Lorentzian manifold is positive, then the geodesic contains a pair of conjugate points. Applications are given to geodesic incompleteness theorems for Lorentzian manifolds, the end structure of complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds, and the geodesic flow of compact Riemannian manifolds.Partially supported by NSF grant MCS77-18723(02).  相似文献

This paper considers optimization problems on Riemannian manifolds and analyzes the iteration-complexity for gradient and subgradient methods on manifolds with nonnegative curvatures. By using tools from Riemannian convex analysis and directly exploring the tangent space of the manifold, we obtain different iteration-complexity bounds for the aforementioned methods, thereby complementing and improving related results. Moreover, we also establish an iteration-complexity bound for the proximal point method on Hadamard manifolds.  相似文献

There is a simple equivalence between isoperimetric inequalities in Riemannian manifolds and certain analytic inequalities on the same manifold, more extensive than the familiar equivalence of the classical isoperimetric inequality in Euclidean space and the associated Sobolev inequality. By an isoperimetric inequality in this connection we mean any inequality involving the Riemannian volume and Riemannian surface measure of a subset α and its boundary, respectively. We exploit the equivalence to give log-Sobolev inequalities for Riemannian manifolds. Some applications to Schrödinger equations are also given.  相似文献

Let G be a compact Lie group acting isometrically on a compact Riemannian manifold M with nonempty fixed point set M G . We say that M is fixed-point homogeneous if G acts transitively on a normal sphere to some component of M G . Fixed-point homogeneous manifolds with positive sectional curvature have been completely classified. We classify nonnegatively curved fixed-point homogeneous Riemannian manifolds in dimensions 3 and 4 and determine which nonnegatively curved simply-connected 4-manifolds admit a smooth fixed-point homogeneous circle action with a given orbit space structure.  相似文献
