Numerical studies are made of flow and heat transfer characteristics of a pulsating flow in a pipe. Complete time-dependent laminar boundary-layer equations are solved numerically over broad ranges of the parameter spaces, i.e., the frequency parameter β and the amplitude of oscillation A. Recently developed numerical solution procedures for unsteady boundary-layer equations are utilized. The capabilities of the present numerical model are satisfactorily tested by comparing the instantaenous axial velocities with the existing data in various parameters. The time-mean axial velocity profiles are substantially unaffected by the changes in β and A. For high frequencies, the prominent effect of pulsations is felt principally in a thin layer near the solid wall. Skin friction is generally greateer than that of a steady flow. The influence of oscillation on skin friction is appreciable both in terms of magnitude and phase relation. Numerical results for temperature are analyzed to reveal significant heat transfer characteristics. In the downstream fully established region, the Nusselt number either increases or decreases over the steady-flow value, depending on the frequency parameter, although the deviations from the steady values are rather small in magnitude for the parameter ranges computed. The Nusselt number trend is amplified as A increases and when the Prandtl number is low below unity. These heat transfer characteristics are qualitatively consistent with previous theoretical predictions.  相似文献

This investigation deals with the effects of slip, magnetic field, and non- Newtonian flow parameters on the flow and heat transfer of an incompressible, electrically conducting fourth-grade fluid past an infinite porous plate. The heat transfer analysis is carried out for two heating processes. The system of highly non-linear differential equations is solved by the shooting method with the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method for moderate values of the parameters. The effective Broyden technique is adopted in order to improve the initial guesses and to satisfy the boundary conditions at infinity. An exceptional cross-over is obtained in the velocity profile in the presence of slip. The fourth-grade fluid parameter is found to increase the momentum boundary layer thickness, whereas the slip parameter substantially decreases it. Similarly, the non-Newtonian fluid parameters and the slip have opposite effects on the thermal boundary layer thickness.  相似文献

A combined experimental and theoretical study has been carried out to investigate mixed-convection heat transfer in a narrow, vertical cavity. The shear force is produced at the left side of a cavity by a belt moving upward that constitutes the sixth wall of the cavity. The left wall of the cavity was cooled and the opposite (right wall) was heated. Hence, the buoyancy force tries to bring the fluid down, and the shear force tends to induce upward fluid flow. The test cell was equipped with two heat exchangers and three thermocouple racks for measuring the temperature distributions at 12 different positions. The temperature field was scanned in the cavity for various flow and temperature boundary conditions. Three-and-two-dimensional laminar models were used to analyze the problem theoretically. The experimental measurements were found to be in good agreement with the numerical predictions.  相似文献

This paper investigates the rotating flow and heat transfer of a viscous fluid induced by a stretching surface. The nonlinear problem subject to a given skin friction at the boundary is solved. Analytic solution is obtained using homotopy analysis method. The velocity, temperature, and stretching velocity is calculated for different values of the rotation parameter (λ). The obtained results are compared with the well known results of rotating flow induced by a stretching surface by using four sets of boundary conditions. In this paper the study of visco-elastic (Walters' liquid B model) flow past a stretching plate with suction is considered. Exact solutions of the boundary layer equations of motion and energy are obtained. The expressions for the coefficient of skin friction and of boundary layer thickness are obtained.  相似文献

An experimental study was made on convective heat and mass transfer from a horizontal heated cylinder in a downward flow of air-water mist at a blockage ratio of 0.4. The measured local heat transfer coefficients agree fairly well with the authors' numerical solutions obtained previously for the front surface of a cylinder over the ranges mass flow ratio 0–4.5×10−2, a temperature difference between the cylinder and air 10–43 K, gas Reynolds number (7.9–23)×103, Rosin-Rammler size parameter 105–168 μm, and dispersion parameter 3.4–3.7. Heat transfer augmentation, two-pahse to single-phase of greater than 19 was attained at the forward stagnation point. For heat transfer in the rear part of the cylinder, an empirical formula is derived by taking into account the dimensionless governing variables, that is, coolant-feed and evaporation parameters.  相似文献

Heat transfer characteristics to both laminar and turbulent pulsating pipe flows under different conditions of Reynolds number, pulsation frequency, pulsator location and tube diameter were experimentally investigated. The tube wall of uniform heat flux condition was considered for both cases. Reynolds number varied from 750 to 12,320 while the frequency of pulsation ranged from 1 to 10 Hz. With locating the pulsator upstream of the inlet of the test section tube, results showed an increase in heat transfer rate due to pulsation by as much as 30% with flow Reynolds number of 1,643 and pulsation frequency of 1 Hz, depending on the upstream location of the pulsator valve. Closer the valve to the tested section inlet, the better improvement in the heat transfer coefficient is achieved. Upon comparing the heat transfer results of the upstream and the downstream pulsation, at Reynolds number of 1,366 and 1,643, low values of the relative mean Nusselt number were obtained with the upstream pulsation. Comparing the heat transfer results of the two studied test sections tubes for Reynolds number range from 8,000 to 12,000 and pulsation frequency range from 1.0 to 10 Hz showed that more improvement in heat transfer rate was observed with a larger tube diameter. For Reynolds number ranging from 8,000 to 12,000 and pulsation frequency of 10 Hz, an improvement in the relative mean Nusselt number of about 50% was obtained at Reynolds number of 8,000 for the large test section diameter of 50 mm. While, for the small test section diameter of 15 mm, at same conditions of Reynolds number and frequency, a reduction in the relative mean Nusselt number of up to 10% was obtained.  相似文献

The influence of rapid oscillations in the outer part of a boundary layer upon the time-averaged skin friction and heat transfer is investigated analytically. The oscillations are taken to be harmonic. The only restriction on the oscillation amplitude is that it should be sufficiently small to permit the use of the boundary layer equations. The derived asymptotic formulae show the explicit dependence of momentum transfer on the frequency and the time-averaged boundary layer flow. For the heat transfer similar formulae can be derived in a number of limiting cases, viz. when the Prandtl number is either large or small.  相似文献

Coefficients of heat transfer to the surface in a laminar hypersonic flow (M = 21) over plane and axisymmetric models with a compression corner are presented. These coefficients are measured by an infrared camera. The parameters varied in the experiments are the angle of the compression corner and the distance to the corner point. Characteristics of the flow with and without separation in the corner configuration are obtained. The measured results are compared with direct numerical simulations performed by solving the full unsteady Navier-Stokes equations. Experiments with controlled streamwise structures inserted into the flow are described. A substantial increase in the maximum values of the heat-transfer coefficient in the region of flow reattachment after developed laminar separation is demonstrated. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 50, No. 4, pp. 112–120, July–August, 2009.  相似文献

A theoretical study of the effect of variable fluid properties on the Blasius and Sakiadis flow with uniform suction at the asymptotic state is presented in this paper. The investigation concerns air and water taking into account the variation of their physical properties with temperature. Velocity and temperature profiles are presented as well as values of the displacement thickness, momentum thickness, shape factor, wall shear stress and Nusselt number for different temperatures of the plate and the ambient fluid. It is found that the nondimensional displacement thickness, momentum thickness, shape factor, absolute wall shear stress and Nusselt number are identical in both Blasius and Sakiadib flow at the asymptotic state for a fluid with constant properties. The same is valid for any fluid with variable properties if the temperature boundary conditions are the same in Blasius and Sakiadis flow.  相似文献

A pulsating laminar flow of a viscous, incompressible liquid in a rectangular duct has been studied. The motion is induced under an imposed pulsating pressure difference. The problem is solved numerically. Different flow regimes are characterized by a non‐dimensional parameter based on the frequency (ω) of the imposed pressure gradient oscillations and the width of the duct (h). This, in fact, is the Reynolds number of the problem at hand. The induced velocity has a phase lag (shift) with respect to the imposed pressure oscillations, which varies from zero at very slow oscillations, to 90° at fast oscillations. The influence of the aspect ratio of the rectangular duct and the pulsating pressure gradient frequency on the phase lag, the amplitude of the induced oscillating velocity, and the wall shear were analyzed. A physical model was developed to study heat transfer in turbulent dispersed flow at very high vapor quality in a vertical pipe by numerically solving the coupling governing differential equations for both phases. Major heat transfer mechanisms included in the model were the thermal nonequilibrium effects, droplet vaporization, droplet deposition on the duct wall and thermal radiative transfer. The predicted results indicated that vapor superheating is dominant for the cases with high wall superheat, otherwise droplet vaporization dominates the energy transport processes. Heat transfer during the droplet-wall interaction only exists at low wall superheat but in small amounts.  相似文献

Analytic solutions are obtained by solving the conservation equations describing fully developed parabolic laminar flow with heat transfer to predict the axial velocity profile, the temperature distribution and the secondary flow behaviour in a square duct. The biharmonic equation arising in this problem has been solved by using the Navier method for simply supported rectangular plates. The analytic solutions substantially agree with the available experimental results.  相似文献

A numerical scheme has been developed for computing fluid flow and heat transfer in periodically repeating geometries. Unstructured solution-adaptive meshes are used in a cell-centred finite volume formulation. The SIMPLE algorithm is used for pressure‒velocity coupling. For periodic flows the static pressure is decomposed into a periodic component and one that varies linearly in the streamwise direction. The latter is computed from the imposition of overall mass balance at the periodic boundary. A subiteration between the periodic pressure correction equation and the correction to the linear component is used. For heat transfer a formulation using the physical rather than the scaled temperature is employed. The scheme is applied to both laminar and turbulent computations of periodic flow and heat transfer in a variety of heat exchanger geometries; comparison with published computations and experimental data is found to be satisfactory. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Heat transfer effects of variable viscosity and viscous dissipation for heated developing laminar flows in circular tubes have been investigated. Three studies are reported covering a comprehensive range of input data for the case of constant wall heat flux. Initially the program was used to predict the effect on heat transfer of temperature-dependent viscosity via a general temperature power relation. In addition, predictions were made for nine particular fluids covering a range of Prandtl numbers from 0.025 to 12 500, and a range of Brinkman numbers from 1.8 × 10?10 to 6.8 × 103. A more detailed study was made for two particular oils covering a range of practical interest. For the liquids considered their viscosity temperature-dependence resulted in enhancement of heat transfer, whereas for fluids with a Prandtl number <200 the effect of viscous dissipation was negligible, and for fluids of a Brinkman number > × 10?2 the outcome was a reduction of heat transfer. A numerical instability problem occurred for situations of very high viscous dissipation which limited the length of duct that could be examined.  相似文献

This paper investigates the unsteady stagnation-point flow and heat transfer over a moving plate with mass transfer, which is also an exact solution to the unsteady Navier-Stokes(NS) equations. The boundary layer energy equation is solved with the closed form solutions for prescribed wall temperature and prescribed wall heat flux conditions. The wall temperature and heat flux have power dependence on both time and spatial distance. The solution domain, the velocity distribution, the flow field, ...  相似文献
