The ‘plane vs. plane’ contact involving flat punches has been the subject of many investigations, even in recent years, mainly due to the crucial role that such components play in phenomena, such as fretting fatigue and indentation tests. While the problem has been deeply approached from a theoretical point of view, there is a noteworthy lack of experimental verifications due to the limited number of laboratory techniques capable of supplying detailed information about contact parameters. In order to make a partial contribution towards gaining an understanding of such problems, this study proposes the investigation of flat rounded punch contact with an ultrasound-based technique, which exploits the properties of ultrasonic waves to be differently reflected by a contact interface depending on its stress state. A suitable setup was built in such a way as to ensure a good level of control of contact conditions, and the interface was scanned with a high-frequency ultrasonic transducer so as to acquire the reflection data. While the graphic processing of the ultrasonic coefficient of reflection may easily be displayed as a ‘contact map’, the quantitative accuracy of the method was also investigated by comparing experimental results with those obtained from a Finite Element model of the system. The results show a good level of agreement between the two approaches, thus confirming that the ultrasonic technique can be effectively employed to investigate many contact problems which to date have never (or scarcely) been experimentally validated.  相似文献

An experimental approach to two-dimensional, viscoelastic, steadily moving rolling contact is described. The photoviscoelastic technique is employed for the analysis of rolling contact stresses between a viscoelastic plate and a rigid rolling cylinder in which the principal axes of stress, strain and birefringence are not coincident with each other. Using an elliptically polarized white light, the distribution of isochromatic fringe order and the principal axes of birefringence at an instant are determined from a single photoviscoelastic image. The time variations of the differences of the principal stresses and strains, as well as their directions, are obtained by use of the optical constitutive equations of photoviscoelasticity. The experimental results involving the time variation of the stresses around the contact surface and their distributions are analyzed.  相似文献

In automotive components, the cumulative microslip phenomenon is often observed for engine assemblies. This phenomenon results in an accumulation of the relative slips in a preferred tangential direction on the contact interface of two solids under cyclic loadings. A significant relative displacement may occur and leads to the assembly failure. In particular, a global rotation of the bearing shell may result from this mechanism of cumulated slips in conrod big end systems. To discuss this rotation problem, a model of two circular beams in frictional contact and submitted to a periodical rotating load is considered here. The aim is to give some simplified estimates of the critical rotation load based on a slip-shakedown analysis. The discussion holds for Tresca friction and can be extended to Coulomb friction under the assumption of small coupling. The static and kinematic slip-shakedown approaches are discussed. The obtained analytical results are shown to be in agreement with the finite element computations.  相似文献

A unique experimental set-up was fabricated to carry out axial heat flow steady state experiments for the assessment of thermal contact conductance (TCC) at the interface of two materials. Three different materials (copper, brass and stainless steel) were selected for the experiments considering their mechanical and thermal properties. Heat transfer experiments were performed in vacuum environment (0.045 torr) to find out solid spot contact conductance for nominally flat surfaces with different surface roughness (1–5 μm) for each specimen under several load conditions (0.6–15 MPa). A precise estimation of TCC for the interface of sets of similar materials was one of the most important results of this research. The effects of the surface roughness, the material properties and the load conditions (nominal interface pressure) have been studied and documented. Furthermore, the experimental results of solid spot contact conductance were compared with four theoretical models, showing their limitations to make a precise estimation of the TCC in the range of the used parameters.  相似文献

The displacements which exist at the contact between two loaded bodies depend on the geometry of the surface of contact, the type of the loading and the property of the materials. A method has been developed to determine these displacements experimentally. A grid has been photographically printed on an interior plane of a transparent model of low modulus of elasticity. The displacements were recorded photographically and the analysis was conducted on the photographs of the deformed grids. Shears were determined from the change in angles. The precision of the measurements at the interface is estimated to be plus or minus 0.05 mm. Examples of application are given for the cases of loads applied normally and tangentially to a rigid cylindrical punch resting on a semi-infinite soft plate. Important observations can be made on the zones of friction and of slip. The proposed method is three dimensional and the distributions can be obtained at several interior planes by changing the position of the plane of the grid. The limitations of the method are pointed out. The possibility of using gratings (12 to 40 lpmm) is considered, as well as the advantages of using moiré to analyze the displacements.  相似文献

Using the method of homogenization theory and the method of matched asymptotic expansions, the leading terms of the asymptotic solution are constructed as ε→0. This experimental study is related to the flow between a stationary small diameter needle and a moving drum of much larger diameter, seen as a moving plane. Our visualisation experimental set-up adds new results regarding the flow behaviour of a polymer solution. This flow is compared to that of a Newtonian fluid used under the same kinematic conditions. Important differences between Newtonian and polymeric flows concern mainly streamlines, stagnation point positions, and reverse flow. A second experimental set-up enabled us to obtain normal stress profiles along the needle wall and the flow rate through the gap. Reslts related to Newtonian flows are compared to the well-known analytical solutions for a bidimensional laminar flow.  相似文献

We study here the numerical analysis of a hydrodynamic contact in a particular configuration: the 3D incompressible viscous flow of a fluid dragged by a smooth plate over a rough surface. The mathematical model takes into account and discretizes the local topography of the rough profile. The simulation outcome will be the 3D velocity and pressure fields of the fluid film within the contact borders. This work is limited to the study of numerical resolution methods working solely in finite differences. A discussion about the bifurcation and non-uniqueness of solutions in the analysis of thermo-mechanical contact problems with initial gap is given. Without loss of generality, a mechanical contact problem coupled with steady heat transfer is studied and an example of non-uniqueness of solutions caused by the thermo-mechanical mechanism is presented. The important work is that the non-uniqueness of solutions, which is different from that found in the analysis of the traditional frictional contact problems, is studied in detail. The possible oscillation and non-convergence problems in the iteraction process of the numerical computation are discussed, and an enhanced algorithm is put forward to overcome the difficulties. The contact problem is considered for a system of bodies subject to wear on a common base. The deformation properties of the bodies and the base are described by the Winkler model. The problem is reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations and an integral equation of hereditary type with difference kernel. The solution of the problem is constructed with the use of the Laplace transform. The asymptotics of the solution at large times is studied. The continuity conditions for the contact of each of the bodies with the base are derived.  相似文献

An improved asperity contact model for two rough surfaces with misalignment is presented in this study. The contact model is statistical and can account for the elasto-plastic behavior of interacting asperities. By combining the improved asperity contact model and the average flow Reynolds equation together, a mixed-lubrication model is developed to understand the effect of surface texturing. By comparing with the results of the purely elastic asperity contact model, it is found that the improved asperity contact model can predict the contact force and actual contact area more accurately, particularly under high load conditions. Moreover, comparing with the elasto-plastic model with an equivalent rough surface against a plane, the improved contact model can consider the effect of permitting misalignment of two rough surfaces. This is beneficial for analyzing the performance of the textured piston ring/liner system, especially when asperities contact and wear happen.  相似文献

Plasticity induced crack closure (PICC) has been widely studied using numerical models. Different numerical parameters can be considered to quantify the opening level, namely one based on the analysis of contact stresses at minimum load. A modified version of this parameter is proposed here, based on nodal contact forces instead of contact stresses. The predictions were found to be similar to those obtained from the contact status of 2nd node behind crack tip. The PICCcontact parameter was also found to be very consistent and adequate for parametric studies of the influence of different physical parameters. The contributions to the opening stress intensity factor of different points along crack flank were found to strongly decrease with distance to crack tip. The cumulative Kopen between the crack tip and a distance of 0.1 mm was found to vary from 30% to 100%, increasing with stress ratio, R. Finally, a K solution was developed for punctual forces applied on crack flank and compared with a literature solution for infinite plates. A good agreement was found for plane strain state but significant differences of about 10% were found for plane stress state.  相似文献

The theory of an automated fringe-pattern analysis using temporal phase stepping method for moiré interferometry is presented. The automated method provides a fast and accurate strain measurement for moiré interferometry. Measurements on a tapered composite specimen with a dropped ply are shown to highlight the capability of this technique to obtain the strain distribution, particularly around the region with a dropped ply.  相似文献
