In 1883 Arzelà (1983/1984) [2] gave a necessary and sufficient condition via quasi-uniform convergence for the pointwise limit of a sequence of real-valued continuous functions on a compact interval to be continuous. Arzelà's work paved the way for several outstanding papers. A milestone was the P.S. Alexandroff convergence introduced in 1948 to tackle the question for a sequence of continuous functions from a topological space (not necessarily compact) to a metric space. In 2009, in the realm of metric spaces, Beer and Levi (2009) [10] found another necessary and sufficient condition through the novel notion of strong uniform convergence on finite sets. We offer a direct proof of the equivalence of Arzelà, Alexandroff and Beer-Levi conditions. The proof reveals the internal gear of these important convergences and sheds more light on the problem. We also study the main properties of the topology of strong uniform convergence of functions on bornologies, initiated in Beer and Levi (2009) [10].  相似文献

The aim of this note is to introduce another way of defining the almost sure uniform convergence, which is necessary when studying some mathematical results on the existence of price bubbles in certain scenarios of trading securities. This mode of convergence of random variables' sequences is intermediate between the uniform and the almost sure ones, and, more specifically, between the uniform and the complete convergences. In this way, this paper presents some mathematical characterizations of both almost sure uniform and complete convergences, and shows that the almost sure uniform convergence is a particular case of complete convergence, when the number of summands in the series defining this mode of convergence is finite. Finally, this paper presents the relation of almost surely uniform convergence with convergence in mean when the random variable limit is integrable. Moreover, almost surely convergence and local boundedness of the sequence of random variables minus its limit are sufficient to derive convergence in mean.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss a number of technical issues associated with conditional weak convergence. The main modes of convergence of conditional probability distributions areuniform, probability, andalmost sure convergence in the conditioning variable. In generalising a closed graph theorem of Dektjarev [5] we show that each almost closed and uniformly almost continuous relation of a quasi-uniform space to a hypercomplete quasi-uniform space is uniformly continuous. The hypothesis of being almost closed is necessary and actually weaker than the requirement that the relation considered has a closed graph. Since each topological space can be quasi-uniformized, one obtains closed graph theorems for topological spaces.As consequences we get an analogous closed graph theorem for locally uniformly almost continuous relations and a theorem concerning the completeness of the range of each continuous uniformly almost open mapping of a hypercomplete space to a uniform space.Finally we prove a closed graph theorem for relations to locally compact spaces without referring to any quasi-uniformization and thus without assumptions and statements concerning uniformity.  相似文献

A necessary and sufficient condition for the uniform convergence of a family of reversed martingales converging to a degenerated limiting process is given. The condition is expressed by means of regular convergence (in Hardy's sense) of corresponding means. It is shown that the given regular convergence is equivalent to Hoffmann-Jørgensen's eventually totally boundedness in the mean which is necessary and sufficient for the uniform law of large numbers. Analogous results are carried out for families of reversed submartingales. By applying derived results several convergence statements are obtained which extend those from the uniform law of large numbers to the general reversed martingale case.  相似文献

This paper deals with the numerical approximation of the solution of 1D parabolic singularly perturbed problems of reaction-diffusion type. The numerical method combines the standard implicit Euler method on a uniform mesh to discretize in time and a HODIE compact fourth order finite difference scheme to discretize in space, which is defined on a priori special meshes condensing the grid points in the boundary layer regions. The method is uniformly convergent having first order in time and almost fourth order in space. The analysis of the uniform convergence is made in two steps, splitting the contribution to the error from the time and the space discretization. Although this idea has been previously used to prove the uniform convergence for parabolic singularly perturbed problems, here the proof is based on a new study of the asymptotic behavior of the exact solution of the semidiscrete problems obtained after the time discretization by using the Euler method. Some numerical results are given corroborating in practice the theoretical results.  相似文献

A convergence structure generalizing the order convergence structure on the set of Hausdorff continuous interval functions is defined on the set of minimal usco maps. The properties of the obtained convergence space are investigated and essential links with the pointwise convergence and the order convergence are revealed. The convergence structure can be extended to a uniform convergence structure so that the convergence space is complete. In this paper, the concept of lacunary equi-statistical convergence is introduced and it is shown that lacunary equi-statistical convergence lies between lacunary statistical pointwise and lacunary statistical uniform convergence. Inclusion relations between equi-statistical and lacunary equi-statistical convergence are investigated and it is proved that, under some conditions, lacunary equi-statistical convergence and equi-statistical convergence are equivalent to each other. A Korovkin type approximation theorem via lacunary equi-statistical convergence is proved. Moreover it is shown that our Korovkin type approximation theorem is a non-trivial extension of some well-known Korovkin type approximation theorems. Finally the rates of lacunary equi-statistical convergence by the help of modulus of continuity of positive linear operators are studied.   相似文献

Multipoint flux approximation (MPFA) methods were introduced to solve control‐volume formulations on general grids. Although these methods are general in the sense that they may be applied to any grid, their convergence and monotonicity properties vary. We introduce a new MPFA method for quadrilateral grids termed the L‐method. This method seeks to minimize the number of entries in the flux stencils, while honoring uniform flow fields. The methodology is valid for general media. For homogeneous media and uniform grids in two dimensions, this method has four‐point flux stencils and seven‐point cell stencils, whereas the MPFA O‐methods have six‐point flux stencils and nine‐point cell stencils. The reduced stencil of the L‐method appears as a consequence of adapting the method to the closest neighboring cells, or equivalently, to the dominating principal direction of anisotropy. We have tested the convergence and monotonicity properties for this method and compared it with the O‐methods. For moderate grids, the convergence rates are the same, but for rough grids with large aspect ratios, the convergence of the O‐methods is lost, while the L‐method converges with a reduced convergence rate. Also, the L‐method has a larger monotonicity range than the O‐methods. For homogeneous media and uniform parallelogram grids, the matrix of coefficients is an M‐matrix whenever the method is monotone. For strongly nonmonotone cases, the oscillations observed for the O‐methods are almost removed for the L‐method. Instead, extrema on no‐flow boundaries are observed. These undesired solutions, which only occur for parameters not common in applications, should be avoided by requiring that the previously derived monotonicity conditions are satisfied. For local grid refinements, test runs indicate that the L‐method yields almost optimal solutions, and that the solution is considerably better than the solutions obtained by the O‐methods. The efficiency of the linear solver is in many cases better for the L‐method than for the O‐methods. We examine when a sequence of lsc convex functions on a Banach space converges uniformly on bounded sets (resp. compact sets) provided it converges Attouch-Wets (resp. Painlevé-Kuratowski). We also obtain related results for pointwise convergence and uniform convergence on weakly compact sets. Some known results concerning the convergence of sequences of linear functionals are shown to also hold for lsc convex functions. For example, a sequence of lsc convex functions converges uniformly on bounded sets to a continuous affine function provided that the convergence is uniform on weakly compact sets and the space does not contain an isomorphic copy of .

In this paper we give a characterization of pointwise and uniform convergence of sequences of homogeneous polynomials on a Banach space by means of the convergence of their level sets. Results are obtained both in the real and the complex cases, as well as some generalizations to the nonhomogeneous case and to holomorphic functions in the complex case. Kuratowski convergence of closed sets is used in order to characterize pointwise convergence. We require uniform convergence of the distance function to get uniform convergence of the sequence of polynomials.

We investigate the uniform convergence of the density of the empirical measure of an ergodic diffusion. It is known that under certain conditions on the drift and diffusion coefficients of the diffusion, the empirical density f t converges in probability to the invariant density f, uniformly on the entire real line. We show that under the same conditions, uniform convergence of f t to f on compact intervals takes place almost surely. Moreover, we prove that under much milder conditions (the usual linear growth condition on the drift and diffusion coefficients and a finite second moment of the invariant measure suffice), we have the uniform convergence of f t to f on compacta in probability.
