Atomization of liquids with high viscosity is always a challenge, especially when small diameter droplets and high liquid flow rates are simultaneously required. In the present research, the performance of a Venturi–vortex twin-fluid swirl nozzle is examined, attending to its capabilities to generate droplets with diameters below 20 µm when atomizing pure glycerin at room temperature. In this nozzle, air is injected tangentially in a central convergent section, and discharges suctioning the liquid fed to a coaxial chamber, here using a gear pump. The resulting spray is visualized and analyzed. Droplet size distributions are measured with a laser diffractometer. As expected, droplet diameter increases with liquid flow rate, and quickly diminishes when air flow rate is increased. Sauter mean diameters (SMD) below 15 µm can be obtained even when atomizing pure glycerin. However, these values are obtained for relatively low glycerin flow rates (∼5 l/h), and with rather wide distributions. For 10 l/h and an air-to-liquid mass flow rate ratio (ALR) of 13.7 more than 26% of the glycerin volume is atomized in droplets smaller than 20 µm. Liquid ligaments are observed near the nozzle exit, but they tend to break up while moving downstream.  相似文献

Centrifugal spray injected at various angles in gas crossflow has been studied experimentally using PIV visualization system and image-processing techniques. Experiments were carried out inside a rectangular duct (95 mm × 95 mm in cross-section) at ambient temperature and pressure, with different gas Reynolds numbers (vary from 12,900 to 45,000) and three injection angles (60°, 90° and 120°). The spray angle of the centrifugal nozzle is 80°, with D32 of 80 μm. The instantaneous images of droplets distribution and the values of the line-averaged D32 at different positions on the cross-sections along the flow field for each condition were obtained, and their flow field configurations were achieved. Quantitative assessments of mixing degree between two phases for different injection angles were determined using a spatial unmixedness parameter. It is found that the addition of droplets into the gas crossflow enhanced the turbulence intensity of the gas crossflow and caused different-scale vortices. The flow field structure, to a great extent, is dependent on the injection angle. The entrainment and centrifugal force of large vortex lead to uneven droplet distribution and moreover influence the mixing of droplets and gas crossflow. A better mixing result can be obtained with the injection angle of nozzles of 60°.  相似文献

A thin shell theoretical solution of two normally intersecting cylindrical shells subjected to thrust-out force and three kinds of moments transmitted through branch pipes is presented in this paper. The solutions of modified Morley equation, which can be applicable up to ρ0 = d/D  0.8 and λ = d/(DT)1/2  8 and the order of accuracy is raised to O(T/D), for the four loading cases are given. The accurate continuity conditions of generalized forces and displacements at the intersecting curve of two cylindrical shells for the four loading cases and the condition of the uniqueness of displacements are derived in this paper. The presented results are verified by experimental and numerical results successfully. They are in agreement with WRC Bulletin 297 when d/D is small.  相似文献

Self-sustained oscillations in a cavity arise due to the unsteady separation of boundary layers at the leading edge. The dynamic mode decomposition method was employed to analyze the self-sustained oscillations. Two cavity flow data sets, with or without self-sustained oscillations and possessing thin or thick incoming boundary layers (ReD = 12,000 and 3000), were analyzed. The ratios between the cavity depth and the momentum thickness (D/θ) were 40 and 4.5, respectively, and the cavity aspect ratio was L/D = 2. The dynamic modes extracted from the thick boundary layer indicated that the upcoming boundary layer structures and the shear layer structures along the cavity lip line coexisted with coincident frequency space but with different wavenumber space, whereas structures with a thin boundary layer showed complete coherence among the modes to produce self-sustained oscillations. This result suggests that the hydrodynamic resonances that gave rise to the self-sustained oscillations occurred if the upcoming boundary layer structures and the shear layer structures coincided, not only in frequencies, but also in wavenumbers. The influences of the cavity dimensions and incoming momentum thickness on the self-sustained oscillations were examined.  相似文献

A numerical study of the alteration of a square cylinder wake using a detached downstream thin flat plate is presented. The wake is generated by a uniform flow of Reynolds number 150 based on the side length of the cylinder, D. The sensitivity of the near wake structure to the downstream position of the plate is investigated by varying the gap distance (G) along the wake centerline in the range 0  G  7D for a constant plate length of L = D. A critical gap distance is observed to occur at Gc  2.3D that indicates the existence of two flow regimes. Regime I is characterised by vortex formation occurring downstream of the gap while for regime II, formation occurs within the gap. By varying the plate length and gap distance, a condition is found where significant unsteady total lift reduction can occur. The root mean square lift reduction is limited by an unsteady stall process on the plate.  相似文献

The velocity field and the adequate shear stress corresponding to the flow of a generalized Burgers’ fluid model, between two infinite co-axial cylinders, are determined by means of Laplace and finite Hankel transforms. The motion is due to the inner cylinder that applies a time dependent torsional shear to the fluid. The solutions that have been obtained, presented in series form in terms of usual Bessel functions J1( ? ), J2( ? ), Y1( ? ) and Y2( ? ), satisfy all imposed initial and boundary conditions. Moreover, the corresponding solutions for Burgers’, Oldroyd-B, Maxwell, second grade, Newtonian fluids and large-time transient solutions for generalized Burgers’ fluid are also obtained as special cases of the present general solutions. The effect of various parameters on large-time and transient solutions of generalized Burgers’ fluid is also discussed. Furthermore, for small values of the material parameters, λ2 and λ4 or λ1, λ2, λ3 and λ4, the general solutions corresponding to generalized Burgers’ fluids are going to those for Oldroyd-B and Newtonian fluids, respectively. Finally, the influence of the pertinent parameters on the fluid motion, as well as a comparison between models, is shown by graphical illustrations.  相似文献

The wake dynamics of a rotating sphere with prescribed rotation axis angles are quantitatively analysed by carrying out numerical simulations at Reynolds numbers of Re = 100, 250 and 300, non-dimensional rotational rates Ω1 = 0–1 and rotation axis angles α = 0, π/6, π/3 and π/2 measured from the free stream axis. These parameters are the same as those in an earlier study (Poon et al., 2010, Int. J. Heat Fluid Flow) where the instantaneous flow structures were discussed qualitatively. This study extends the findings of the earlier study by employing phase diagrams (CLx, CLy) and (CD, CL) to provide a quantitative analysis of the time-dependent behaviour of the flow structures. At Re = 300 and Ω1 = 0.05, the phase diagrams (CLx, CLy) show ‘saw tooth’ patterns for both α = 0 and π/6. The ‘saw tooth’ pattern indicates that the flow structures comprise a higher frequency oscillation component at a Reynolds number of 300 which is not observed until Re  800 for a stationary sphere. This ‘saw tooth’ pattern disappears as Ω1 increases. The employment of the phase diagrams also reveals that different flow structures induce different oscillation amplitudes on both lateral force coefficients. With the exception of the vortices formed from a shear layer instability, all other flow regimes show larger fluctuations in CL than CD.  相似文献

We discuss calculations of synthetic spectra for the interpretation and analysis of K-shell and bound-free emission from argon-doped deuterium-filled OMEGA direct-drive implosion cores. The spectra are computed using a model that considers collisional-radiative atomic kinetics, continuum-lowering, detailed Stark-broadened line shapes, line overlapping, and radiation transport effects. The photon energy range covers the moderately optically thick n = 3  n = 1 and n = 4  n = 1 line transitions in He- and H-like Ar, their associated satellite lines in Li- and He-like Ar, and several radiative recombination edges. At the high-densities characteristic of implosion cores, the radiative recombination edges substantially shift to lower energies thus overlapping with several line transitions. We discuss the application of the spectra to spectroscopic analysis of doped implosion cores.  相似文献

M-Band and L-Band Gold spectra between 3 and 5 keV and 8 and 13 keV, respectively, have been recorded by a photometrically calibrated crystal spectrometer. The spectra were emitted from the plasma in the laser deposition region of a ‘hot hohlraum’. This is a reduced-scale hohlraum heated with ≈9 kJ of 351 nm light in a 1 ns square pulse at the OMEGA laser. The space- and time-integrated spectra included L-Band line emission from Co-like to Ne-like gold. The three L-Band line features were identified to be the 3s  2p, 3d5/2  2p3/2 and 3d3/2  2p1/2 transitions at ≈9 keV, ≈10 keV and ≈13 keV, respectively. M-Band 5f  3d, 4d  3p, and 4p  3s transition features from Fe-like to P-like gold were also recorded between 3 and 5 keV. Modeling from the radiation–hydrodynamics code LASNEX, the collisional-radiative codes FLYCHK and SCRAM, and the atomic structure code FAC were used to model the plasma and generate simulated spectra for comparison with the recorded spectra. Through these comparisons, we have determined the average electron temperature of the emitting plasma to be between 6.0 and 6.5 keV. The electron temperatures predicted by LASNEX appear to be too large by a factor of about 1.5.  相似文献

The paper presents average flow visualizations and measurements, obtained with the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique, of a submerged rectangular free jet of air in the range of Reynolds numbers from Re = 35,300 to Re = 2200, where the Reynolds number is defined according to the hydraulic diameter of a rectangular slot of height H. According to the literature, just after the exit of the jet there is a zone of flow, called zone of flow establishment, containing the region of mixing fluid, at the border with the stagnant fluid, and the potential core, where velocity on the centerline maintains a value almost equal to the exit one. After this zone is present the zone of established flow or fully developed region. The goal of the paper is to show, with average PIV visualizations and measurements, that, before the zone of flow establishment is present a region of flow, never mentioned by the literature and called undisturbed region of flow, with a length, LU, which decreases with the increase of the Reynolds number. The main characteristics of the undisturbed region is the fact that the velocity profile maintains almost equal to the exit one, and can also be identified by a constant height of the average PIV visualizations, with length, LCH, or by a constant turbulence on the centerline, with length LCT. The average PIV velocity and turbulence measurements are compared to those performed with the Hot Film Anemometry (HFA) technique. The average PIV visualizations show that the region of constant height has a length LCH which increases from LCH = H at Re = 35,300 to LCH = 45H at Re = 2200. The PIV measurements on the centerline of the jet show that turbulence remains constant at the level of the exit for a length, LCT, which increases from LCT = H at Re = 35,300 to LCT = 45H at Re = 2200. The PIV measurements show that velocity remains constant at the exit level for a length, LU, which increases from LU = H at Re = 35,300 to LU = 6H at Re = 2200 and is called undisturbed region of flow. In turbulent flow the length LU is almost equal to the lengths of the regions of constant height, LCH, and constant turbulence, LCT. In laminar flow, Re = 2200, the length of the undisturbed region of flow, LU, is greater than the lengths of the regions of constant height and turbulence, LCT = LCH = 45H. The average PIV and HFA velocity measurements confirm that the length of potential core, LP, increases from LP = 45H at Re = 35,300 to LP = 78H at Re = 2200, and are compared to the previous experimental and theoretical results of the literature in the zone of mixing fluid and in the fully developed region with a good agreement.  相似文献

This detailed the tribological and tribochemical properties of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoflakes used as additives in #40 base oil in a four-ball tribo-tester. The average friction coefficient of the friction pair for lubricant containing the Fe3O4 nanoflakes of 1.5 wt% as a lubricant additive in the base oil is decreased by 18.06% compared to that of solely base oil. The chemical composition of base oil with the Fe3O4 nanoflake additives did not change during the 48-h friction assessment. The decreased saturation magnetization and increased coercivity of magnetite nanoflakes occurred due to the distortion of the basal planes and the presence of hematite (α-Fe2O3) generated by the tribochemical reactions during the friction process. The multi-layer low-shear-stress tribochemical lubrication films on the surface of the friction pair could form because the nanoflake particles arrange and adhere onto the surface of the friction pair in an orderly manner, and the tribochemical reactions of the friction pair in the presence of the nanoflakes occur as Fe  FeO  Fe3O4  γ-FeOOH  γ-Fe2O3  α-Fe2O3. The formation of the films can improve the tribological properties.  相似文献

Flow instability in baffled channel flow, where thin baffles are mounted on both channel walls periodically in the direction of the main flow, has been numerically investigated. The geometry considered here can be regarded as a simple model for finned heat exchangers. The aim of this investigation is to understand how baffle interval (L) and Reynolds number (Re) influence the flow instability. With a fixed baffle length of one quarter of channel height (H), ratios of baffle interval to channel height (RB = L/H) between 1 and 4 are considered. The critical Reynolds number of the primary instability, a Hopf bifurcation from steady flow to time-periodic flow, turned out to be minimum when RB = 3.08. The friction factor (f) is strongly correlated with the critical Reynolds number for RB  2.5. For the particular cases of RB = 1.456 and RB = 1.0, we performed Floquet stability analysis in order to study the secondary instability through which time-periodic two-dimensional flow bifurcates into three-dimensional flow. The results obtained in this investigation are in good agreement with those computed from full simulations, and shed light on understanding and controlling flow characteristics in a finned heat exchanger, quite beneficial to its design.  相似文献

The engineering response of metamaterials has a dramatic impact on the physics, optics and engineering communities, because they offer electromagnetic properties that are difficult or impossible to achieve with conventional materials. In this paper, an asymptotic analysis of the electromagnetic fields at multi-material wedges composed of metamaterials is proposed. This is made possible by removing the assumption of positive electric permittivities and magnetic permeabilities, an hypothesis which usually applies to conventional materials. Exploring the whole range of variability of these electromagnetic properties, it is shown that, in addition to the classical real eigenvalues 0 ? λ < 1 leading to power-law singularities of the type O(rλ?1) as r  0, it is also possible to find imaginary eigenvalues leading to hypersingular solutions, as well as nonsingular configurations for a suitable choice of the negative electric permittivities and magnetic permeabilities of the media. Moreover, to fully characterize the asymptotic fields, the analysis is not only restricted to the determination of the lowest real and complex eigenvalues, but is also extended to the evaluation of the higher-order nonsingular ones. The obtained analytical results collected in synthetic diagrams are expected to have impact on the design of micro- and nano-electro-mechanical systems.  相似文献

Temperature fluctuations occur due to thermal mixing of hot and cold streams in the T-junctions of the piping system in nuclear power plants, which may cause thermal fatigue of piping system. In this paper, three-dimensional, unsteady numerical simulations of coolant temperature fluctuations at a mixing T-junction of equal diameter pipes were performed using the large eddy simulation (LES) turbulent model. The experiments used in this paper to benchmark the simulations were performed by Hitachi Ltd. The calculated normalized mean temperatures and fluctuating temperatures are in good agreement with the measurements. The influence of the time-step ranging from 100 Hz to 1000 Hz on the numerical simulation results was explored. The simulation results indicate that all the results with different frequencies agree well with the experimental data. Finally, the attenuation of fluctuation of fluid temperature was also investigated. It is found that, drastic fluctuation occurs within the range of less than L/D = 4.0; the fluctuation of fluid temperature does not always attenuate from the pipe center to the wall due to the continuous generation of vortexes. At the top wall, the position of L/D = 1.5 has a minimum normalized mean temperature and a peak value of root-mean square temperature, whereas at the bottom wall, the position having the same characteristics is L/D = 2.0.  相似文献

A circular water jet (Re = 1.6 × 105; We = 8.8 × 103) plunging at shallow angles (θ  12.5°) into a quiescent pool is investigated computationally and experimentally. A surprising finding from the work is that cavities, of the order of jet diameter, are formed periodically in the impact location, even though the impinging flow is smooth and completely devoid of such a periodicity. Computational prediction of these frequencies was compared with experimental findings, yielding excellent agreement. The region in the vicinity of the impact is characterized by strong churning due to splashing and formation of air cavities. Measured velocity profiles indicate a concentration of momentum beneath the free surface slightly beyond the impact location (X/Dj  14), with a subsequent shift towards the free surface further downstream of this point (X/Dj  30). This shift is due primarily to the action of buoyancy on the cavity/bubble population. Comparisons of the mean velocity profile between simulations and experiments are performed, yielding good agreement, with the exception of the relatively small churning flow region. Further downstream (X/Dj  40), the flow develops mostly due to diffusion and the location of peak velocity coincides with the free surface. In this region, the free surface acts as an adiabatic boundary and restricts momentum diffusion, causing the peak velocity to occur at the free surface.  相似文献

The experimental and theoretical researches on the radial jet of two opposed jets have been carried out in this paper. The radial velocities of opposed jets with various exit velocities, nozzle diameters and nozzle separations were measured experimentally by a hot-wire anemometer (HWA). The results show that, the normalized radial velocities are self-similar across various radial sections at r ? 1.5D and the radial velocity profiles can be described by a Gaussian distribution function. The half-width increases linearly with increasing radial distance at r ? 1.5D, and spreading rates of radial jet are about 0.121. The normalized radial velocity at impingement plane increases firstly, and then decreases with the increasing normalized radial distance. The normalized radial velocity is independent on nozzle diameter, nozzle separation and exit velocity. The maximum radial velocity at impingement plane is proportional to the exit velocity, and it is inversely proportional to the 0.551th power of the normalized nozzle separation. The position of the maximum radial velocity increases with the nozzle separation at L/D < 1, and keeps invariant at L/D ? 1.  相似文献

The process of ductile plate perforation by sharp-nosed rigid projectiles is further examined in this work through 2D numerical simulations. We highlight various features concerning the effective resisting stress (σr) which a finite thickness plate, with a flow stress of Yt, exerts on the projectile during perforation. In particular, we show that the normalized resisting stress (σr/Yt) can be represented as a unique function of the normalized thickness of the plate (H/D, where H is plate thickness and D is projectile diameter), for a large range of normalized thicknesses. Our simulations for very thin target plates show that the penetration process is achieved through the well-known dishing mechanism, where the target material is pushed forward by the projectile’s nose. An important observation, which emerges from our simulations, is that the transition between the dishing and the hole enlargement mechanisms takes place at a normalized thickness of about H/D = 1/3. We also find that the normalized resistive stress for intermediate plate thicknesses, 1/3 < H/D < 1.0, is relatively constant at a value of σr/Yt = 2.0. This range of thicknesses conforms to a state of quasi plane stress in the plates. For thicker plates (H/D > 1) the σr/Yt ratio increases monotonically to values which represent the resistance to penetration of semi-infinite targets, where the stress state is characterized by plane strain conditions. Using a simple model, which is based on energy conservation, we can predict the values of the ballistic limit velocities for many projectile/target combinations, provided the perforation is done through the ductile hole enlargement mechanism. Good agreement is demonstrated between predictions from our model and experimental data from different sources, strongly enhancing the confidence in both the validity and usefulness of our model.  相似文献

Surface responses induced by point load or uniform traction moving steadily with subsonic speed on an anisotropic half-plane boundary are investigated. It is found that the effects of the material constant on surface displacements are through matrices L?1(v) and S(v)L?1(v), while those on surface stress components are through matrices Ω(v) and Γ(v). Explicit expressions for the elements of these four matrices are expressed in terms of elastic stiffness for general anisotropic materials. The special cases of monoclinic materials with symmetry plane at x1 = 0, x2 = 0 and x3 = 0, and the case for orthotropic materials are all deduced. Results for isotropic material may be recovered from present results. For monoclinic materials with a plane of symmetry at x3 = 0, two of the elements of matrix Ω(v) are found to be independent of subsonic speed.  相似文献

The present paper, describes our experimental results on the viscosity of the nanofluid prepared by dispersing alumina nanoparticles (<50 nm) in commercial car coolant. The nanofluid prepared with calculated amount of oleic acid (surfactant) was tested to be stable for more than 80 days. The viscosity of the nanofluids is measured both as a function of alumina volume fraction and temperature between 10 and 50 °C. While the pure base fluid display Newtonian behavior over the measured temperature, it transforms to a non-Newtonian fluid with addition of a small amount of alumina nanoparticles. Our results show that viscosity of the nanofluid increases with increasing nanoparticle concentration and decreases with increase in temperature. Most of the frequently used classical models severely under predict the measured viscosity. Volume fraction dependence of the nanofluid viscosity, however, is predicted fairly well on the basis of a recently reported theoretical model for nanofluids that takes into account the effect of Brownian motion of nanoparticles in the nanofluid. The temperature dependence of the viscosity of engine coolant based alumina nanofluids obeys the empirical correlation of the type: log (μnf) = A exp(BT), proposed earlier by Namburu et al.  相似文献
