We study the electronic edge states of graphene in the quantum Hall regime. For non-interacting electrons, graphene supports both electron-like and hole-like edge states. We find there are half as many edge states of each type in the lowest Landau level compared to higher Landau levels, leading to a quantization of the Hall conductance that is shifted relative to standard two dimensional electron gases. We also consider the effect of quantum Hall ferromagnetism on this edge structure, and find an unusual Luttinger liquid at the edge in undoped graphene. This arises due to a domain wall that forms near the edge between partially spin-polarized and valley-polarized regions. The domain wall has a U(1) degree of freedom which generates both collective and charged gapless excitations, whose consequences for tunneling experiments are discussed.  相似文献

In a Luttinger liquid phase of one-dimensional molecular matter the strength of zero-point motion can be characterized by dimensionless De Boer's number quantifying the interplay of quantum fluctuations and two-body interactions. Selecting the latter in the Morse form we show that dissociation of the Luttinger liquid is a process initiated at the system edge. The latter becomes unstable against quantum fluctuations at a value of De Boer's number which is smaller than that of the bulk instability which parallels the classical phenomenon of surface melting.  相似文献

By using the infinite time-evolving block decimation, we study quantum fidelity and entanglemententropy in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg alternating chain under an external magnetic field .The effects of the magnetic field on the fidelity are investigated, and its relation with the quantum hase transition (QPT) is analyzed. The phase diagram of the model is given accordingly, which supports the Haldane phase, the singlet-dimer phase, the Luttinger liquid phase and the paramagnetic phase. The scaling of entanglement entropy in the gapless Luttinger liquid phase is studied, and the central charge $c=1$ is obtained. We also study the relationship between the quantum coherence, string order parameter and QPTs. Results obtained from these quantum information observations are consistent with the previous reports.  相似文献

The method of separability, introduced by Symanzik, is applied in order to describe the effect of a boundary for a fractional quantum Hall liquid in the Laughlin series. An Abelian Chern‐Simons theory with plane boundary is considered and the Green functions both in the bulk and on the edge are constructed, following a rigorous, perturbative, quantum field theory treatment. We show that the conserved boundary currents find an explicit interpretation in terms of the continuity equation with the electron density satisfying the Tomonaga‐Luttinger commutation relation.  相似文献

We derive, from first principles, the complete Luttinger liquid theory of abelian quantum Hall edge states. This theory includes disorder and Coulomb interactions as well as the coupling to external electromagnetic fields. We introduce a theory of spatially separated edge modes, find an enlarged dual symmetry and obtain a complete classification of quasiparticle operators and tunneling exponents. The chiral anomaly on the edge is used to obtain unambiguously the Hall conductance. In resolving the problem of counter-flowing edge modes, we find that the long range Coulomb interactions play a fundamental role. In order to set up a theory for arbitrary ν we use the idea of a two-dimensional network of percolating edge modes. We derive an effective, single mode Luttinger liquid theory for tunneling processes into the edge which yields a continuous tunneling exponent 1/ν. The network approach is also used to re-derive the instanton vacuum theory for plateau transitions.  相似文献

We observe resonant tunneling into a voltage biased fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) edge, using atomically sharp tunnel barriers unique to cleaved-edge overgrown devices. The resonances demonstrate different tunnel couplings to the metallic lead and the FQHE edge. Weak coupling to the FQHE edge produces clear non-Fermi liquid behavior with a sixfold increase in resonance area under bias arising from the power law density of states at the FQHE edge. A simple device model uses the resonant tunneling formalism for chiral Luttinger liquids to successfully describe the data.  相似文献

We study the low-temperature properties of a 4He fluid confined in nanopores, using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations with realistic He-He and He-pore interactions. In the narrow-pore limit, the system can be described by the quantum hydrodynamic theory known as Luttinger liquid theory with a large Luttinger parameter, corresponding to the dominance of solid tendencies and strong susceptibility to pinning by a periodic or random potential from the pore walls. On the other hand, for wider pores, the central region appears to behave like a Luttinger liquid with a smaller Luttinger parameter, and may be protected from pinning by the wall potential, offering the possibility of experimental detection of a Luttinger liquid.  相似文献

We consider the Kane-Mele model supplemented by a Hubbard U term. The phase diagram is mapped out using projective auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The quantum spin liquid of the Hubbard model is robust against weak spin-orbit interaction, and is not adiabatically connected to the spin-Hall insulating state. Beyond a critical value of U>U(c) both states are unstable toward magnetic ordering. In the quantum spin-Hall state we study the spin, charge, and single-particle dynamics of the helical Luttinger liquid by retaining the Hubbard interaction only on a ribbon edge. The Hubbard interaction greatly suppresses charge currents along the edge and promotes edge magnetism but leaves the single-particle signatures of the helical liquid intact.  相似文献

Heavy electron metals on the verge of a quantum phase transition to magnetism show a number of unusual non-Fermi liquid properties which are poorly understood. This article discusses in a general way various theoretical aspects of this phase transition with an eye toward understanding the non-Fermi liquid phenomena. We suggest that the non-Fermi liquid quantum critical state may have a sharp Fermi surface with power law quasiparticles but with a volume not set by the usual Luttinger rule. We also discuss the possibility that the electronic structure change associated with the possible Fermi surface reconstruction may diverge at a different time/length scale from that associated with magnetic phenomena.  相似文献

We verify the validity of the Cohen-Gallavotti fluctuation theorem for the strongly correlated problem of charge transfer through an impurity in a chiral Luttinger liquid, which is realizable experimentally as a quantum point contact in a fractional quantum Hall edge state device. This is accomplished via the development of an analytical method to calculate the full counting statistics of the problem in all the parameter regimes involving the temperature, the Hall voltage, and the gate voltage.  相似文献

A single pair of helical edge states as realized at the boundary of a quantum spin Hall insulator is known to be robust against elastic single particle backscattering as long as time reversal symmetry is preserved. However, there is no symmetry preventing inelastic backscattering as brought about by phonons in the presence of Rashba spin orbit coupling. In this Letter, we show that the quantized conductivity of a single channel of helical Dirac electrons is protected even against this inelastic mechanism to leading order. We further demonstrate that this result remains valid when Coulomb interaction is included in the framework of a helical Tomonaga Luttinger liquid.  相似文献

We have measured the low-temperature conductance of a one-dimensional island embedded in a single mode quantum wire. The quantum wire is fabricated using the cleaved edge overgrowth technique and the tunneling is through a single state of the island. Our results show that while the resonance line shape fits the derivative of the Fermi function the intrinsic linewidth decreases in a power law fashion as the temperature is reduced. This behavior agrees quantitatively with Furusaki's model for resonant tunneling in a Luttinger liquid.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss the experimental results of M. Grayson et al. on tunneling I–V characteristics of the quantum Hall edge. We suggest a two-step tunneling mechanism involving localized electron states near the edge, which might account for the discrepancy between the experimental data and the predictions of the chiral Luttinger liquid theory of the quantum Hall edge.  相似文献

We study a one-dimensional Josephson-junction chain embedded in a magnetic field. We show that, when the magnetic flux per elementary loop equals half the superconducting flux quantum phi0 = h/2e, a local Z2 symmetry arises. This symmetry is responsible for a nematic Luttinger liquid state associated with bound states of Cooper pairs. We analyze the phase diagram and discuss some experimental possibilities to observe this exotic phase.  相似文献

We suggest an experiment to study Luttinger liquid behavior in a one-dimensional nanostructure, avoiding the usual complications associated with transport measurements. The proposed setup consists of a quantum box, biased by a gate voltage, and side coupled to a quantum wire by a point contact. Close to the degeneracy points of the Coulomb blockaded box, and in the presence of a magnetic field sufficiently strong to spin polarize the electrons, the setup can be described as a Luttinger liquid interacting with an effective Kondo impurity. Using exact nonperturbative techniques, we predict that the differential capacitance of the box will exhibit distinctive Luttinger liquid scaling with temperature and gate voltage.  相似文献

We show that multiple point contacts on a barrier separating two laterally coupled quantum Hall fluids induce Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations in the tunneling conductance. These quantum coherence effects provide new evidence for the Luttinger liquid behavior of the edge states of quantum Hall fluids. For a two point contact, we identify coherent and incoherent regimes determined by the relative magnitude of their separation and the temperature. We analyze both regimes in the strong and weak tunneling amplitude limits as well as their temperature dependence. We find that the tunneling conductance should exhibit AB oscillations in the coherent regime, both at strong and weak tunneling amplitudes with the same period but with different functional form.  相似文献

We study the quantum nonlinear response to an applied electric field E of a one-dimensional pinned charge-density wave or Luttinger liquid in the presence of disorder. From an explicit construction of low-lying metastable states and of bounce instanton solutions between them, we demonstrate quantum creep v=e(-c/E(1/2)) as well as a sharp crossover at E=E(*) towards a linear response form consistent with variable-range hopping arguments, but dependent only on electronic degrees of freedom.  相似文献

The quantum spin Hall (QSH) phase is a time reversal invariant electronic state with a bulk electronic band gap that supports the transport of charge and spin in gapless edge states. We show that this phase is associated with a novel Z2 topological invariant, which distinguishes it from an ordinary insulator. The Z2 classification, which is defined for time reversal invariant Hamiltonians, is analogous to the Chern number classification of the quantum Hall effect. We establish the Z2 order of the QSH phase in the two band model of graphene and propose a generalization of the formalism applicable to multiband and interacting systems.  相似文献
