We deal with the influence of the applied stress on the domain wall velocity in glass-coated magnetic microwires. In general, the domain wall velocity decreases with the applied tensile stress. Four regimes of the domain wall dynamics appear: (1)?diffusion-damped, (2)?a regime with variable domain wall width, (3)?a viscous and (4)?a vortex regime. Detailed analysis of domain wall parameters shows that the structural relaxation plays an important role even at ambient temperatures if high tensile stress is present. At higher fields (viscous regime), the most important damping arises from magnetic relaxation of magnetic moments. Finally, the domain wall velocity steeply increases (reaching a maximum at 7000?m?s(-1)) in the vortex regime and so does the domain wall mobility.

We have studied current-driven dynamics of domain walls when an in-plane magnetic field is present in perpendicularly magnetized nanowires using an analytical model and micromagnetic simulations. We model an experimentally studied system, ultrathin magnetic nanowires with perpendicular anisotropy, where an effective in-plane magnetic field is developed when current is passed along the nanowire due to the Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling. Using a one-dimensional model of a domain wall together with micromagnetic simulations, we show that the existence of such in-plane magnetic fields can either lower or raise the threshold current needed to cause domain wall motion. In the presence of the in-plane field, the threshold current differs for positive and negative currents for a given wall chirality, and the wall motion becomes sensitive to out-of-plane magnetic fields. We show that large non-adiabatic spin torque can counteract the effect of the in-plane field.

We report a universal scaling behavior of the first arrival time of a traveling magnetic domain wall into a finite space-time observation window of a magneto-optical microscope enabling direct visualization of a Barkhausen avalanche in real time. The first arrival time of the traveling magnetic domain wall exhibits a nontrivial fluctuation and its statistical distribution is described by universal power-law scaling with scaling exponents of 1.34+/-0.07 for CoCr and CoCrPt films, despite their quite different domain evolution patterns. Numerical simulation of the first arrival time with an assumption that the magnetic domain wall traveled as a random walker well matches our experimentally observed scaling behavior, providing an experimental support for the random-walking model of traveling magnetic domain walls.

We have studied the effect of thermal treatment on the domain wall dynamics of FeSiB and FeCoMoB microwires. It was shown that annealing in transversal magnetic field increases the domain wall mobility as well as the domain wall velocity. Annealing under the tensile stress hinders the appearance of the monodomain structure but application of tensile stress leads to the magnetic bistability having the domain wall mobility twice higher that in as-cast state. Further increase of the tensile stress reduces the domain wall mobility but the domain wall velocity increases as a result of the decrease of critical propagation field. Annealing of the FeCoMoB microwire by Joule heating leads to introduction of the circular anisotropy that favors the vortex domain wall. Such treatment increases the domain wall mobility as well as the maximum domain wall velocity.

The dynamics of magnetic domain wall motion in the FeNi layer of a FeNi/Al2O3/Co trilayer has been investigated by a combination of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, photoelectron emission microscopy, and a stroboscopic pump-probe technique. The nucleation of domains and subsequent expansion by domain wall motion in the FeNi layer during nanosecond-long magnetic field pulses was observed in the viscous regime up to the Walker limit field. We attribute an observed delay of domain expansion to the influence of the domain wall energy that acts against the domain expansion and that plays an important role when domains are small.

The current-induced domain wall motion was observed experimentally in the case of the domain wall trapped at the semicircular arc within the U shape Ni80Fe20 wire. The measurement of the current-induced domain wall motion was achieved by adding a biased field before switching field and a critical current density was measured. We found two magnetic domain structures in the U pattern. At zero fields, the vortex domain wall nucleated at the semicircular arc of the U pattern. Continuous magnetic state without wall was investigated in near-switching field.

The motion of magnetic domain walls in permalloy nanowires is investigated by real-time resistance measurements. The domain wall velocity is measured as a function of the magnetic field in the presence of a current flowing through the nanowire. We show that the current can significantly increase or decrease the domain wall velocity, depending on its direction. These results are understood within a one-dimensional model of the domain wall dynamics which includes the spin transfer torque.

We have used time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism combined with photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM) to investigate the layer-resolved microscopic magnetization reversal in FeNi/X/Co (with X=Cu, Al2O3) trilayer systems. These measurements were performed in pump-probe mode, synchronizing magnetic pulses with synchrotron x-ray pulses. The good magnetic contrast observed for most samples reveals that in many cases the magnetization reversal is reproducible. We have used the measurements to obtain domain wall propagation speeds as a function of applied magnetic field, and to investigate the influence of domain wall interactions on the magnetic switching.

We present evidence for the creation of an exchange spring in an antiferromagnet due to exchange coupling to a ferromagnet. X-ray magnetic linear dichroism spectroscopy on single crystal Co/NiO(001) shows that a partial domain wall is wound up at the surface of the antiferromagnet when the adjacent ferromagnet is rotated by a magnetic field. We determine the interface exchange stiffness and the antiferromagnetic domain wall energy from the field dependence of the direction of the antiferromagnetic axis, the antiferromagnetic pendant to a ferromagnetic hysteresis loop. The existence of a planar antiferromagnetic domain wall, proven by our measurement, is a key assumption of most exchange bias models.

For an ideal one-dimensional ferromagnetic wire with a magnetic domain wall (DW), contribution of the DW to the resistivity of the system has been investigated. We have studied the resistance due to the magnetic impurities in the domain wall which was suspended in a weak magnetic field for two types of chiralities. The analysis has been based on Boltzmann transport equation, within the relaxation time approximation. Through this formalism, both increasing and decreasing of the resistance due to the DW have been predicted in presence of Zeeman interaction as an extrinsic mechanism.

We study kink (domain wall) solutions in a model consisting of two complex scalar fields coupled to two independent Abelian gauge fields in a Lagrangian that has U(1)×U(1) gauge plus discrete symmetry. We find consistent solutions such that while the U(1) symmetries of the fields are preserved while in their respective vacua, they are broken on the domain wall. The gauge field solutions show that the domain wall is sandwiched between domains with constant magnetic fields.

We present here a numerical study of the magnetostatic charge distribution of transverse Néel type domain wall in permalloy nanowires. The calculations indicate that not only is the distribution highly non-uniform within a given transverse wall but it also varies dramatically with respect to the wire width. The implications of this for magnetostatic domain wall pinning are analyzed by considering the stray field interaction between a wall and another extended magnetic body for a particular domain wall chirality, where two distinct depinning mechanisms are observed depending on the wire width.

The equilibrium shape of the bowing of the magnetic domain wall, for an applied magnetic field and within the bulged domain wall Globus model, is obtained. We make the assumption of having a bowing corresponding to a volume of revolution and use calculus of variations to minimize the total energy with respect to the profile of the shape. It is found that the equilibrium shape corresponds to a spherical cap, in agreement with the assumption made for this shape in previous work.

We model current-induced domain wall motion in magnetic nanowires with the variable width. Employing the collective coordinate method we trace the wall dynamics. The effect of the width modulation is implemented by spatial dependence of an effective magnetic field. The wall destination in the potential energy landscape due to the magnetic anisotropy and the spatial nonuniformity is obtained as a function of the current density. For a nanowire of a periodically modulated width, we identify three (pinned, nonlinear, and linear) current density regimes for current-induced wall motion. The threshold current densities depend on the pulse duration as well as the magnitude of wire modulation. In the nonlinear regime, application of ns order current pulses results in wall displacement which opposes or exceeds the prediction of the spin transfer mechanism. The finding explains stochastic nature of the domain wall displacement observed in recent experiments.

Full-field magnetic transmission x-ray microscopy at high spatial resolution down to 20 nm is used to directly observe field-driven domain wall motion in notch-patterned permalloy nanowires. The depinning process of a domain wall around a notch exhibits a stochastic nature in most nanowires. The stochasticity of the domain wall depinning sensitively depends on the geometry of the nanowire such as the wire thickness, the wire width, and the notch depth. We propose an optimized design of the nanowire for deterministic domain wall depinning field at a notch.

We investigate the spin wave spectra associated to a vortex domain wall confined within a ferromagnetic nanotube. Basing our study upon a simple model for the energy functional we obtain the dispersion relation, the density of states and dissipation induced life-times of the spin wave excitations in presence of a magnetic domain wall. Our aim is to capture the basics spin wave physics behind the geometrical confinement of nobel magnetic textures.

We investigated the motion of domain walls in ferromagnetic cylindrical nanowires by solving the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation numerically for a classical spin model in which energy contributions from exchange, crystalline anisotropy, dipole–dipole interactions, and a driving magnetic field are considered. Depending on the diameter, either transverse domain walls or vortex walls are found. A transverse domain wall is observed for diameters smaller than the exchange length of the given system. In this case, the system effectively behaves one dimensionally and the domain wall velocity agrees with the result of Slonczewski for one-dimensional walls. For larger diameters, a crossover to a vortex wall sets in which enhances the domain wall velocity drastically. For a vortex wall the domain wall velocity is described by the Walker formula.

We studied the domain wall (DW) dynamics of magnetically bistable amorphous glass-coated Fe74B13Si11C2 microwires. In according to our experimental results magnetic field dependences of DW velocity of studied microwires can be divided into two groups: with uniform or uniformly accelerated DW propagation along the microwire. Strong correlation between the type of the magnetic field dependence of domain wall velocity, v(H), and the distribution of the local nucleation fields has been observed. Moreover, we observed abrupt increasing of DW velocity (jump) on the magnetic field dependences of the domain wall velocity, v(H), for the both types of the v(H) dependences. At the same time usual linear increasing of the domain wall velocity with magnetic field persists below these jumps. It was found that the jump height correlates with the location of nucleation place of the new domain wall. We have measured local nucleation field distribution in all the microwires. From local nucleation field distribution we have obtained the DW nucleation locations and estimated the jump height

The magnetic microstructure and domain wall distribution of antiferromagnetic α-Fe2O3 epitaxial layers is determined by statistical image analyses. Using dichroic spectromicroscopy images, we demonstrate that the domain structure is statistically invariant with thickness and that the antiferromagnetic domain structure of the thin films is inherited from the ferrimagnetic precursor layer one, even after complete transformation into antiferromagnetic α-Fe2O3. We show that modifying the magnetic domain structure of the precursor layer is a genuine way to tune the magnetic domain structure and domain walls of the antiferromagnetic layers.
