We consider fermionic polar molecules in a bilayer geometry where they are oriented perpendicularly to the layers, which permits both low inelastic losses and superfluid pairing. The dipole-dipole interaction between molecules of different layers leads to the emergence of interlayer superfluids. The superfluid regimes range from BCS-like fermionic superfluidity with a high Tc to Bose-Einstein (quasi-)condensation of interlayer dimers, thus exhibiting a peculiar BCS-Bose-Einstein condensation crossover. We show that one can cover the entire crossover regime under current experimental conditions.  相似文献

Since the discovery of superfluidity in 4He and Landau's phenomenological theory, the relationship between Bose condensation and superfluidity has been intensely debated. 4He is known by now to be both superfluid and condensed at low temperature, and more generally, in dimension D≥2, all superfluid bosonic models realized in experiments are condensed in their ground state, the most recent example being provided by ultracold bosonic atoms trapped in an optical lattice. In this Letter, it is shown that a 2D gas of bosons which is not condensed at T=0 can be achieved by populating a layer through a frustrated proximity effect from a superfluid reservoir. This condensate-free bosonic fluid is further shown to be a superfluid with incommensurate correlations.  相似文献

The specific heat of superfluid 3He, disordered by a silica aerogel, is found to have a sharp discontinuity marking the thermodynamic transition to superfluidity at a temperature reduced from that of bulk 3He. The magnitude of the discontinuity is also suppressed. This disorder effect can be understood from the Ginzburg-Landau theory which takes into account elastic quasiparticle scattering suppressing both the transition temperature and the amplitude of the order parameter. We infer that the limiting temperature dependence of the specific heat is linear at low temperatures in the disordered superfluid state, consistent with predictions of gapless excitations everywhere on the Fermi surface.  相似文献

In this Letter we study both ground state properties and the superfluid transition temperature of a spin-1/2 Fermi gas across a Feshbach resonance with a synthetic spin-orbit coupling, using the mean-field theory and the exact solution of two-body problem. We show that a strong spin-orbit coupling can significantly enhance the pairing gap for negative scattering length a(s), due to increased density of state at Fermi surface. Strong spin-orbit coupling can also significantly enhance the superfluid transition temperature Tc to a sizable fraction of Fermi temperature when a(s) ≤ 0, while it suppresses Tc slightly for positive a(s). The interaction energy and pair size at resonance are also discussed.  相似文献

We study the superfluid behavior of a population imbalanced ultracold atomic Fermi gases with a short range attractive interaction in a one-dimensional(1 D) optical lattice, using a pairing fluctuation theory. We show that, besides widespread pseudogap phenomena and intermediate temperature superfluidity, the superfluid phase is readily destroyed except in a limited region of the parameter space. We find a new mechanism for pair hopping, assisted by the excessive majority fermions,in the presence of continuum-lattice mixing, which leads to an unusual constant Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC) asymptote for T_c that is independent of pairing strength. In result,on the BEC side of unitarity, superfluidity, when it exists, may be strongly enhanced by population imbalance.  相似文献

We explore the superfluidity of 4He confined in a porous glass, which has nanopores of 2.5 nm in diameter, at pressures up to 5 MPa. With increasing pressure, the superfluidity is drastically suppressed, and the superfluid transition temperature approaches 0 K at some critical pressure, Pc approximately 3.4 MPa. The feature suggests that the extreme confinement of 4He into the nanopores induces a quantum phase transition from a superfluid to a nonsuperfluid at 0 K and at Pc.  相似文献

An analysis of experimental data shows that, in addition to phonon-roton excitations in superfluid helium, there necessarily exist at least one branch of elementary excitations whose energy spectrum strongly depends on temperature. On this basis, the Landau superfluidity criterion is generalized for several branches of elementary excitations, taking into account that the critical velocity should vanish during the phase transition of liquid helium from the superfluid state to the normal state.  相似文献

In this paper, based on the Bose-Hubbard model with two-body on-site interactions, we study the quantum phase transition between the superfluid state and the Mott-insulator state. With the decoupling approximation, we get the relation between the weak superfluidity and dimensionless chemical potential with different particle number and different dimensionless interaction strength, and the relation between the weak superfluidity and the reciprocal of dimensionless interaction strength with different particle number. We also calculate the corresponding experimental parameters.  相似文献

By large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations we show that grain boundaries in 4He crystals are generically superfluid at low temperature, with a transition temperature of the order of approximately 0.5 K at the melting pressure; nonsuperfluid grain boundaries are found only for special orientations of the grains. We also find that close vicinity to the melting line is not a necessary condition for superfluid grain boundaries, and a grain boundary in direct contact with the superfluid liquid at the melting curve is found to be mechanically stable and the grain-boundary superfluidity observed by Sasaki et al. [Science 313, 1098 (2006)10.1126/science.1130879] is not just a crack filled with superfluid.  相似文献

We propose the Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity of quasi-two-dimensional spatially indirect magnetobiexcitons in a slab of superlattice with alternating electron and hole layers consisting from the semiconducting quantum wells (QWs) and graphene superlattice in high magnetic field. For this system the instability of the ground state of interacting two-dimensional indirect magnetoexcitons in a slab of superlattice with alternating electron and hole layers in high magnetic field is found. The density of superfluid component ns(T) and the temperature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition to the superfluid state in the system of two-dimensional indirect magnetobiexcitons, interacting as electrical quadrupoles, are obtained for both QW and graphene realizations.  相似文献

We study thermodynamics of strongly coupled lattice QCD with two colors of staggered fermions in 2+1 dimensions. The partition function of this model can be written elegantly as a statistical mechanics of dimers and baryon loops. The model is invariant under an SO(3) x U(1) symmetry. At low temperatures, we find evidence for superfluidity in the U(1) symmetry sector while the SO(3) symmetry remains unbroken. The finite temperature phase transition appears to belong to the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class, but the superfluid density jump rho(s) (T(c)) at the critical temperature T(c) is anomalously higher than the normal value of 2T(c)/pi. We show that, by adding a small SO(3) symmetry breaking term to the model, the superfluid density jump returns to its normal value, implying that the extra symmetry causes anomalous superfluid behavior. Our results may be of interest to researchers studying superfluidity in spin-1 systems.  相似文献

We have used high-performance parallel computations by NVIDIA graphics cards applying the method of nonlinear conjugate gradients and Monte Carlo method to observe directly the developing ground state configuration of a two-dimensional hard-core boson system with decrease in temperature, and its evolution with deviation from a half-filling. This has allowed us to explore unconventional features of a charge order—superfluidity phase transition, specifically, formation of an irregular domain structure, emergence of a filamentary superfluid structure that condenses within of the charge-ordered phase domain antiphase boundaries, and formation and evolution of various topological structures.  相似文献

Motivated by recent developments on cold atom traps and high density QCD we consider fermionic systems composed of two particle species with different densities. We argue that a mixed phase composed of normal and superfluid components is the energetically favored ground state. We suggest how this phase separation can be used as a probe of fermion superfluidity in atomic traps.  相似文献

We study the discrete nonlinear Schr?dinger equation (DNLS) in an annular geometry with on-site defects. The dynamics of a traveling plane-wave maps onto an effective nonrigid pendulum Hamiltonian. The different regimes include the complete reflection and refocusing of the initial wave, solitonic structures, and a superfluid state. In the superfluid regime, which occurs above a critical value of nonlinearity, a plane wave travels coherently through the randomly distributed defects. This superfluidity criterion for the DNLS is analogous to (yet very different from) the Landau superfluidity criteria in translationally invariant systems. Experimental implications for the physics of Bose-Einstein condensate gases trapped in optical potentials and of arrays of optical fibers are discussed.  相似文献

We consider the superfluid phase transition that arises when a Feshbach resonance pairing occurs in a dilute Fermi gas. We apply our theory to consider a specific resonance in potassium ((40)K), and find that for achievable experimental conditions, the transition to a superfluid phase is possible at the high critical temperature of about 0.5T(F). Observation of superfluidity in this regime would provide the opportunity to experimentally study the crossover from the superfluid phase of weakly coupled fermions to the Bose-Einstein condensation of strongly bound composite bosons.  相似文献

We establish the superfluidity theory of coherent light in waveguides made of nonlinear polar crystals. It is found that the pairing state of photons in a nonlinear polar crystal is the photonic superfluid state. The photon-photon interaction potential is an attractive effective interaction by exchange of virtual optical phonons. In the traveling-wave pairing state of photons, the photon number is conserved, which is similar to the Bose-Einstein condensation(BEC) state of photons. In analogy to the BCS-BEC crossover theory of superconductivity,we derive a set of coupled order parameter and number equations, which determine the solution of the traveling-wave superfluid state of photons. This solution gives the critical velocity of light in a self-focusing nonlinear waveguide. The most important property of the photonic superfluid state is that the system of photon pairs evolves without scattering attenuations.  相似文献

The effect of a random field due to impurities, boundary irregularities, and so on, on the superfluidity of a three-dimensional system of excitons and a quasi-two-dimensional system of direct or spatially indirect excitons is studied. The influence of a random field on the density of the superfluid component in the indicated excitonic systems at low temperatures T is investigated. The interaction between excitons is taken into account in the ladder approximation. For quasi-two-dimensional excitonic systems in a random field the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature in the superfluid state is calculated.  相似文献

We prove that the necessary condition for a solid to be also a superfluid is to have zero-point vacancies, or interstitial atoms, or both, as an integral part of the ground state. As a consequence, in the absence of symmetry between vacancies and interstitials, superfluidity has a zero probability to occur in commensurate solids which break continuous translation symmetry. We discuss recent 4He experiments by Kim and Chan in the context of this theorem, question its bulk supersolid interpretation, and offer an alternative explanation in terms of superfluid interfaces.  相似文献

We study by quantum Monte Carlo simulations the local superfluid response of small (up to 27 molecules) parahydrogen clusters, down to temperatures as low as 0.05 K. We show that at low temperature superfluidity is not confined at the surface of the clusters, as recently claimed by Khairallah et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 183401 (2007)10.1103/PhysRevLett.98.183401]. Rather, even clusters with a pronounced shell structure are essentially uniformly superfluid. Superfluidity occurs as a result of long exchange cycles involving all molecules.  相似文献
