Previous research (Emmerich et al., 1983) in which tones were presented in the center of the notches in band-reject noise backgrounds suggests that information from frequency regions remote from the nominal signal frequency is useful in frequency discrimination. The present work extends the earlier findings by presenting tones on either side of a notch so that only one (or the other) tail of the excitation patterns of the tones would fall into the notch. In addition, tones were presented in high-pass noise, low-pass noise, and various combinations of the two. The results again indicate that remote information affects frequency discrimination, and they are also consistent with the hypothesis that the low-frequency tail of the excitation pattern is more useful for frequency discrimination than is the high-frequency tail. 相似文献

The ability to obtain reliable phonetic information from a talker's face during speech perception is an important skill. However, lip-reading abilities vary considerably across individuals. There is currently a lack of normative data on lip-reading abilities in young normal-hearing listeners. This letter describes results obtained from a visual-only sentence recognition experiment using CUNY sentences and provides the mean number of words correct and the standard deviation for different sentence lengths. Additionally, the method for calculating T-scores is provided to facilitate the conversion between raw and standardized scores. This metric can be utilized by clinicians and researchers in lip-reading studies. This statistic provides a useful benchmark for determining whether an individual's lip-reading score falls within the normal range, or whether it is above or below this range. 相似文献

The effects of the presence of an amplitude discontinuity in the spectrum of a noise masker on frequency discrimination performance were examined. First, detection thresholds as a function of masker level were obtained for pure-tone signals masked by either simultaneous or forward white and low-pass maskers. Then frequency discrimination thresholds were obtained using four masker levels that were chosen to yield predetermined masked thresholds, with signal levels corresponding to each of three sensation levels above these masked thresholds. The principal results indicate that frequency discrimination is poorer in simultaneous low-pass noise than in simultaneous white noise, and that this difference in performance increases with increasing sensation level and with increasing masker level. These results are inconsistent with an explanation based on the pitches generated at spectral edges ("edge pitch"), pitch shifts, or disruption of phase-locking information, but are generally consistent with an explanation based on lateral suppression. It is proposed that a release from suppression may occur in filtered noise backgrounds at high noise levels and at high sensation levels. The reduced suppression may result in poorer frequency discrimination due, in part, to reduced signal detectability. 相似文献

Factors affecting thresholds for sinusoidal signals in narrow-band maskers with fluctuating envelopes 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
When a signal is higher in frequency than a narrow-band masker, thresholds are lower when the masker envelope fluctuates than when it is constant. This article investigates the cues used to achieve the lower thresholds, and the factors that influence the amount of threshold reduction. In experiment I the masker was either a sinusoid (constant envelope) or a pair of equal-amplitude sinusoids (fluctuating envelope) centered at the same frequency as the single sinusoid (250, 1000, 3000, or 5275 Hz). The signal frequency was 1.8 times the masker frequency. At all center frequencies, thresholds were lower for the two-tone masker than for the sinusoidal masker, but the effect was smaller at the highest and lowest frequencies. The reduced effect at high frequencies is attributed to the loss of a cue related to phase locking in the auditory nerve. The reduced effect at low frequencies can be partly explained by reduced slopes of the growth-of-masking functions. In experiment II the masker was a sinusoid amplitude modulated at an 8-Hz rate. Masker and signal frequencies were the same as for the first experiment. Randomizing the modulation depth between the two halves of a forced-choice trial had no effect on thresholds, indicating that changes in modulation depth are not used as a cue for signal detection. Thresholds in the modulated masker were higher than would be predicted if they were determined only by the masker level at minima in the envelope, and the threshold reduction produced by modulating the master envelope was less at 250 Hz than at higher frequencies. Experiments III and IV reveal two factors that contribute to the reduced release from masking at low frequencies: The rate of increase of masked threshold with decreasing duration is greater at 250 Hz than at 1000 Hz; the amount of forward masking, relative to simultaneous masking, is greater at 250 Hz than at 1000 Hz. Very short acoustic signals in the frequency range from 256-2048 Hz consisting of only one, two, or three sinusoidal cycles are examined. Although they are recognized as clicks, they can be distinguished by pitch. Frequency difference limens of these signals are in the order of 1-2 semitones. A tonal character of these short tones appears only with a longer signal, and is linked closer with the duration than with the number of periods. 相似文献

This paper discusses how amplitude envelope shapes, sound-pressure level, and duration of broadband noise affect sharpness and brightness. In the first experiment, sharpness, brightness, and similarity were judged for paired stimuli by 13 subjects. The stimuli consisted of broadband noise with different types of amplitude envelopes, sound-pressure levels, and duration. Experimental results were analyzed with a multidimensional scaling technique. In addition, the second experiment measuring the point of subjective equality (PSE) of sharpness was carried out for four subjects. The results of these two experiments showed large individual differences in sharpness judgment, difficulty in brightness judgment for the stimuli used in the experiments, and influence of the amplitude envelope shapes on sharpness. The individual differences observed in sharpness judgment were explained by the differences between weights given to two psychological dimensions: loudness and subjective duration. This study forms a basis for understanding sharpness of nonsteady sounds. 相似文献

This study examined the effect of noise on the identification of four synthetic speech continua (/ra/-/la/, /wa/-/ja/, /i/-/u/, and say-stay) by adults with cochlea implants (CIs) and adults with normal-hearing (NH) sensitivity in quiet and noise. Significant group-by-SNR interactions were found for endpoint identification accuracy for all continua except /i/-/u/. The CI listeners showed the least NH-like identification functions for the /ra/-/la/ and /wa/-/ja/ continua. In a second experiment, NH adults identified four- and eight-band cochlear implant stimulations of the four continua, to examine whether group differences in frequency selectivity could account for the group differences in the first experiment. Number of bands and SNR interacted significantly for /ra/-/la/, /wa/-/ja/, and say-stay endpoint identification; strongest effects were found for the /ra/-/la/ and say-stay continua. Results suggest that the speech features that are most vulnerable to misperception in noise by listeners with CIs are those whose acoustic cues are rapidly changing spectral patterns, like the formant transitions in the /wa/-/ja/ and /ra/-/la/ continua. However, the group differences in the first experiment cannot be wholly attributable to frequency selectivity differences, as the number of bands in the second experiment affected performance differently than suggested by group differences in the first experiment. 相似文献

Consonant recognition in quiet and in noise was investigated as a function of age for essentially normal hearing listeners 21-68 years old, using the nonsense syllable test (NST) [Resnick et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. Suppl. 1 58, S114 (1975)]. The subjects audited the materials in quiet and at S/N ratios of +10 and +5 dB at their most comfortable listening levels (MCLs). The MCLs approximated conversational speech levels and were not significantly different between the age groups. The effects of age group, S/N condition (quiet, S/N +10, S/N +5) and NST subsets, and the S/N condition X subset interaction were all significant. Interactions involving the age factor were nonsignificant. Confusion matrices were similar across age groups, including the directions of errors between the most frequently confused phonemes. Also, the older subjects experienced performance decrements on the same features that were least accurately recognized by the younger subjects. The findings suggest that essentially normal older persons listening in quiet and in noise experience decreased consonant recognition ability, but that the nature of their phoneme confusions is similar to that of younger individuals. Even though the older subjects met the same selection criteria as did younger ones, there was an expected shift upward in auditory thresholds with age within these limits. Sensitivity at 8000 Hz was correlated with NST scores in noise when controlling for age, but the correlation between performance in noise and age was nonsignificant when controlling for the 8000-Hz threshold. These associations seem to implicate the phenomena underlying the increased 8000-Hz thresholds in the speech recognition problems of the elderly, and appear to support the concept of peripheral auditory deterioration with aging even among those with essentially normal hearing. 相似文献

Formant discrimination for isolated vowels presented in noise was investigated for normal-hearing listeners. Discrimination thresholds for F1 and F2, for the seven American English vowels /i, I, epsilon, ae, [symbol see text], a, u/, were measured under two types of noise, long-term speech-shaped noise (LTSS) and multitalker babble, and also under quiet listening conditions. Signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) varied from -4 to +4 dB in steps of 2 dB. All three factors, formant frequency, signal-to-noise ratio, and noise type, had significant effects on vowel formant discrimination. Significant interactions among the three factors showed that threshold-frequency functions depended on SNR and noise type. The thresholds at the lowest levels of SNR were highly elevated by a factor of about 3 compared to those in quiet. The masking functions (threshold vs SNR) were well described by a negative exponential over F1 and F2 for both LTSS and babble noise. Speech-shaped noise was a slightly more effective masker than multitalker babble, presumably reflecting small benefits (1.5 dB) due to the temporal variation of the babble. 相似文献

Frequency discrimination of spectral envelopes of complex stimuli, frequency selectivity measured with psychophysical tuning curves, and speech perception were determined in hearing-impaired subjects each having a relatively flat, sensory-neural loss. Both the frequency discrimination and speech perception measures were obtained in quiet and noise. Most of these subjects showed abnormal susceptibility to ambient noise with regard to speech perception. Frequency discrimination in quiet and frequency selectivity did not correlate significantly. At low signal-to-noise ratios, frequency discrimination correlated significantly with frequency selectivity. Speech perception in noise correlated significantly with frequency selectivity and with frequency discrimination at low signal-to-noise ratios. The frequency discrimination data are discussed in terms of an excitation-pattern model. However, they neither support nor refute the model. 相似文献

The effects of noise on 7- to 11-month-old infants' speech-sound discrimination (/ba/vs/ga/) were determined using a conditioned head-turn procedure. Variation in performance as a function of signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) was estimated by testing each infant at four S/N's (-8, 0, 8, and 16 dB). Adults were tested for comparison at four S/N's (-12, -8, -4, and 0 dB). The S/N's were chosen based on pilot data. Performance varied monotonically with S/N for both age groups, but infants required greater S/N than adults to achieve comparable levels of performance. Both groups were also tested using an adaptive (1-up, 1-down) threshold procedure with a 3-dB step size. There was a group mean difference in threshold of 5.8-dB S/N favoring the adults. Weighted group psychometric functions, derived from the responses obtained in the adaptive runs, showed good correspondence with the data points at the four S/N's. The slopes of these functions were the same (7.5%/dB) for infants and adults. The results suggest that infants are at a greater disadvantage than adults when processing speech in noise and that concern over the effects of a noisy environment on the acquisition of language is justified. In addition, the adaptive threshold procedure can be used as an efficient way to estimate the limits of discrimination ability as a function of S/N or intensity, both for individual subjects and for groups of subjects, in developmental research. 相似文献

A four-alternative, forced choice adaptive procedure was used to measure the lowest intensity at which children could identify monosyllabic nouns that had been standardized to be understandable (at comfortable listening levels) to inner city, 3-year-old children. Results showed no age-related performance changes when the words were presented against a 12-talker babble or against filtered noise. In quit, however, performance improved between the ages of 5 and 10 years. Performance of children with learning problems was poorer than performance of children achieving normal school progress, even though clinical measures of auditory sensitivity showed no differences. Just-noticeable differences (jnds) of both interaural time delay (ITD) and interaural intensity difference (IID) were measured for binaural tones in the presence of broadband maskers. The tones were presented at 50 dB SPL, the target frequency was 500 Hz, and the masker frequency was 100-1000 Hz, with various combinations of ITD and IID. The time and amplitude jnds exhibit similar dependencies on target-to-masker ratio and masker type. At a given target-to-masker ratio, discrimination was generally best in the presence of diotic maskers and worst in the presence of the interaurally out-of-phase maskers. Results for the other masker types examined tended to fall in between these two extremes. Many of these data trends are consistent with predictions of the lateralization model and the position-variable model based on auditory-nerve activity. 相似文献
