Experiments have been performed to assess the impact of an extended surface on the heat transfer enhancement for axisymmetric, turbulent liquid jet impingement on a heated round disk. The disk, with an array of integral radial fins mounted on its surface, is placed at the bottom of an open vertical circular cavity. Hydrodynamic and heat transfer data were obtained for a dielectric fluorocarbon liquid FC-77. For a fixed circular heater of diameter D=22.23 mm, several geometric parameters were tested: the nozzle diameter (4.42≤d≤9.27 mm), the confining wall diameter of the vertical cavity (22.23≤D c≤30.16 mm), and the nozzle-to-heater spacing (0.5≤S/d≤5.0). The FC-77 flow rates varied from =0.2 to 11.0 l/min producing Reynolds numbers in the wide interval 700≤Re d ≤44,000. For d=4.42 mm, the heat transfer response to the separation distance S/d was small but increased gradually with increasing nozzle diameter up to d=9.27 mm. The thermal resistance R th increased with the confining wall diameter D c and also with the nozzle diameter d. A minimum value of the thermal resistance of R th,min=0.4 cm2 K/W was attained for a combination of d=4.42 mm, D c=22.23 mm, S/d=1, and =7.5 l/min. Based on a simplified heat transfer model, reasonable agreement was obtained between measured values of the thermal resistance and the R th-predictions. The total fin effectiveness ɛf was shown to increase with increasing nozzle diameter, but was invariant with the flow rate (or the jet exit velocity). More than a three-fold heat transfer enhancement was realized through the addition of the array of integral radial fins on the heated round disk. Flow development in the wake of a dual step cylinder has been investigated experimentally using Laser Doppler Velocimetry and flow visualization. The dual step cylinder model is comprised of a large diameter cylinder (D) mounted at the mid-span of a small diameter cylinder (d). The experiments have been performed for a Reynolds number (Re D ) of 1,050, a diameter ratio (D/d) of 2, and a range of large cylinder aspect ratios (L/D). The results show that the flow development is highly dependent on L/D. The following four distinct flow regimes can be identified based on vortex dynamics in the wake of the large cylinder: (1) for L/D ≥ 15, three vortex shedding cells form in the wake of the large cylinder, one central cell bounded by two cells of lower frequency, (2) for 8 < L/D ≤ 14, a single vortex shedding cell forms in the wake of the large cylinder, (3) for 2 < L/D ≤ 6, vortex shedding from the large cylinder is highly three-dimensional. When spanwise vortices are shed, they deform substantially and attain a hairpin shape in the near wake, (4) for 0.2 ≤ L/D ≤ 1, the large cylinder induces vortex dislocations between small cylinder vortices. The results show that for Regimes I to III, on the average, the frequency of vortex shedding in the large cylinder wake decreases with L/D, which is accompanied by a decrease in coherence of the shed vortices. In Regime IV, small cylinder vortices connect across the large cylinder wake, but these connections are interrupted by vortex dislocations. With decreasing L/D, the frequency of dislocations decreases and the dominant frequency in the large cylinder wake increases toward the small cylinder shedding frequency.  相似文献

Hot-wire measurements have been carried out in the turbulent flow around a rotating circular cylinder in still air for Reynolds numbers Re=∣U w D/ν=1.5×104 to 105. The experimental results confirm the analysis derived by asymptotic theory for high Reynolds numbers. Two different ways of deriving the friction law from the experiments (via shear stress and via velocity distribution) resulted practically in the same law. It is shown, that in spite of the curvature of the streamlines the universal logarithmic velocity distribution is still valid near the wall. Received: 8 August 1996/Accepted: 24 April 1998  相似文献

This study investigates the enhancement of the laminar forced convection characteristics of backward-facing step flow in a two-dimensional channel through the installation of solid and slotted baffles onto the channel wall. The effects of the height of baffle H b, inclination of baffle installation ϕb, height of slot in baffle H t, inclination of slot in baffle ϕt, and distance between the backward-facing step and baffle D on the flow structure, temperature distribution and Nusselt number variation for the system at various Re are numerically explored. Results show that a slotted baffle can enhance the average Nusselt number for the heating section of channel plate by the maximum 190% when Pr=0.7, H s=0.5, L=5, H b ≤ 0.3, W b ≤ 0.2, 0.1 ≤ D ≤ 0.5, 0° ≤ ϕb ≤ 45°, H t ≤ 0.1, 0° ≤ ϕt ≤ 45° and 50 ≤ Re ≤ 400. As for the solid baffle, the enhancement may be up by 230%. The solid baffle might cause the re-separation of main stream, and consequently result in poor local heat transfer coefficient in the end region of heating section. This disadvantage can be obviously improved as the baffle is slotted. Besides the penalty of increase in pressure drop due to the baffle installation is much higher for the situation with solid baffle.  相似文献

Forced convection heat transfer from an unconfined circular cylinder in the steady cross-flow regime has been studied using a finite volume method (FVM) implemented on a Cartesian grid system in the range as 10 ≤ Re ≤ 45 and 0.7 ≤ Pr ≤ 400. The numerical results are used to develop simple correlations for Nusselt number as a function of the pertinent dimensionless variables. In addition to average Nusselt number, the effects of Re, Pr and thermal boundary conditions on the temperature field near the cylinder and on the local Nusselt number distributions have also been presented to provide further physical insights into the nature of the flow. The rate of heat transfer increases with an increase in the Reynolds and/or Prandtl numbers. The uniform heat flux condition always shows higher value of heat transfer coefficient than the constant wall temperature at the surface of the cylinder for the same Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The maximum difference between the two values is around 15–20%.  相似文献

Spatio-temporal velocity fields of an axisymmetric sudden expansion were measured using an ultrasonic velocity profiler and analyzed to investigate the transitional scheme of the spatial structure using two-dimensional Fourier transform and proper orthogonal decomposition techniques. The variation of the zero-crossing point, the fluctuation energy directed upstream and the eigenmode spectrum all have the same transitional scheme as a function of the Reynolds number. The transitional scheme can be classified Re d<1,000 for the laminar regime, Re d=1,000–3,000 for the transitional regime and Re d>3,000 for the turbulent regime. Especially, in the transitional regime, we found large changes in the flow structure at Re d=1,500 and 2,000. The jump at Re d=2,000 is caused by the change in the flow condition upstream. The jump at Re d=1,500 clearly shows a change in the spatial structure of the flow.  相似文献

Effect of local forcing on a turbulent boundary layer   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
An experimental study is performed to analyze flow structures behind local suction and blowing in a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer. The local forcing is given to the boundary layer flow by means of a sinusoidally oscillating jet issuing from a thin spanwise slot at the wall. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness is about Re θ =1700. The effects of local forcing are scrutinized by altering the forcing frequency (0.011 ≤ f+≤ 0.044). The forcing amplitude is fixed at A 0=0.4. It is found that a small local forcing reduces the skin friction and the skin friction reduction increases with the forcing frequency. A phase-averaging technique is employed to capture the large-scale vortex evolution. An organized spanwise vortical structure is generated by the local forcing. The cross-sectional area of vortex and the time fraction of vortex are examined by changing the forcing frequency. An investigation of the random fluctuation components reveals that turbulent energy is concentrated near the center of vortical structures. Received: 17 March 2000/Accepted: 3 April 2001  相似文献

This study focuses on the self-sustained oscillatory flow characteristics between two tandem circular cylinders of equal diameter placed in a uniform inflow. The Reynolds number (Re D ), based on the cylinder diameter, was around 1,000 and all experiments were performed in a recirculating water channel. The streamwise distance between two tandem cylinders ranged within 1.5 ≤ X c/D ≤ 7.0. Here X c denotes the center-to-center distance between two tandem cylinders. For all experiments studied herein, quantitative velocity measurements were performed using hot-film anemometer and the LDV system. The laser sheet technique was employed for qualitative flow visualization. The wavelet transform was applied to elucidate the temporal variation and phase difference between two spectral components of the velocity signals detected in the flow field. The remarkable finding was that when two tandem circular cylinders were spaced at a distance within 4.5 ≤ X c/D ≤ 5.5, two symmetrical unstable shear layers with a certain wavelength were observed to impinge onto the downstream cylinder. The responding frequency (f u ), measured between these two cylinders, was much higher than the natural shedding frequency behind a single isolated cylinder at the same Re D . This responding frequency decreased as the distance X c/D increased. Not until X c/D ≥ 6.0, did it recover to the natural shedding frequency behind a single isolated cylinder. Between two tandem cylinders, the Strouhal numbers (St c = f u X c/Uc) maintained a nearly constant value of 3, indicating the self-sustained oscillating flow characteristics with a wavelength X c/3. Here U c is the convection speed of the unstable shear layers between two tandem cylinders. At Re D = 1,000, the self-sustained oscillating characteristics between two tandem circular cylinders were proven to exhibit a sustained flow pattern, not just a sporadic phenomenon.  相似文献

We consider the problem of calculating the parameters for supersonic viscous compressible gas flow past a corner (angle greater than ). The complete system of Navier-Stokes equations for the viscous compressible gas is solved in the small vicinity Q1. (characteristic dimensionl~1/R) of the corner point. The conditions for smooth matching of the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations and the solution of the ideal gas or boundary layer equations are specified on the boundary of Q1. All these solutions are a priori unknown, and the conditions for smooth matching reduce to certain differential equations on the boundary of Q1. Here account is taken of the interaction of the flows near the wall surface and in the so-called outer region [1].We note that no a priori assumptions are made in Q1 concerning the qualitative behavior of the solution, in contrast with other studies on viscous flow past a corner (for example, [2–4]).The Navier-Stokes system in Q1 is solved numerically, using the difference scheme suggested in [5]. This scheme permits obtaining the steady-state solution by the asymptotic method for large Reynolds numbers R, and also has an approximation accuracy adequate to account for the effects of low viscosity and thermal conductivity.  相似文献

On the basis of an asymptotic analysis of the Navier-Stokes system of equations for large Reynolds numbers (Re → ∞), the plane incompressible fluid flow near a surface having a convex corner with a small angle 2θ* is investigated. It is shown that for θ* = O(Re?1/4), in addition to the known solution that describes a separated flow completely localized in a thin “viscous” sublayer of the interaction region near the corner point, another solution corresponding to a flow with a developed separation zone is possible. For θ 0 = Re1/4 θ* = O(1), the longitudinal dimension of this zone varies from finite values up to values of the order of Re?3/8. The nonuniqueness of the solution is established on a certain range of variation of the parameter θ 0. The dependence of the drag coefficient on the angle θ* is found.  相似文献

The effects of exit-wedge angle on evolution, formation, pinch-off, propagation and diffusive mass entrainment of vortex rings in air were studied using digital particle image velocimetry. Vortex rings were generated by passing a solenoid-valve-controlled air jet through a cylindrical nozzle. Experiments were performed over a wide range of exit-wedge angles (10° ≤ α ≤ 90°) of the cylindrical nozzle, initial Reynolds numbers (450 ≤ Re ≤ 4,580) and length-to-diameter ratios (0.9 ≤ L/D ≤ 11) of the air jet. For sharp edges (α ≤ 10°), a secondary ring may emerge at high Reynolds numbers, which tended to distort the vortex ring if ingested into it. For blunt edges (α ≥ 45°), by contrast, stable vortex rings were produced. The formation phase of a vortex ring was found to be closely related to its evolution pattern. An exit-wedge angle of 45° was found to be optimal for rapid pinch-off and faster propagation and better stability of a vortex ring. Diffusive mass entrainment was found to be between 35% and 40% in the early stages of a vortex ring propagation and it gradually increased throughout the course of vortex ring propagation. Entrainment fraction was found to be sensitive to the L/D ratio of the initial jet and decreases when the L/D ratio is increased.  相似文献

Natural convection in a fluid saturated porous medium has been numerically investigated using a generalized non-Darcy approach. The governing equations are solved by using Finite Volume approach. First order upwind scheme is employed for convective formulation and SIMPLE algorithm for pressure velocity coupling. Numerical results are presented to study the influence of parameters such as Rayleigh number (106 ≤Ra ≤108), Darcy number (10−5Da ≤ 10−2), porosity (0.4 ≤ ɛ ≤ 0.9) and Prandtl number (0.01 ≤ Pr ≤ 10) on the flow behavior and heat transfer. By combining the method of matched asymptotic expansions with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), so called asymptotic computational fluid dynamics (ACFD) technique has been employed to generate correlation for average Nusselt number. The technique is found to be an attractive option for generating correlation and also in the analysis of natural convection in porous medium over a fairly wide range of parameters with fewer simulations for numerical solutions.  相似文献

A methodology for local solution-adaptive mesh refinement in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using cell-level and global kinetic energy balances is formulated and tested. Results are presented for two two-dimensional steady incompressible laminar benchmark problems: a lid-driven cavity (Reynolds number Re=1000) and a backward-facing step (Re=400). It is demonstrated that local kinetic energy imbalance correlates with local solution accuracy, that normalized global imbalance is an appropriate criterion for halting mesh refinement and that a specified level of accuracy is realized at lower computational effort using local refinement compared with a uniform finer mesh. © 1997 by John Wiley and Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The flow and local heat transfer around a wall-mounted cube oriented 45° to the flow is investigated experimentally in the range of Reynolds number 4.2 × 103–3.3 × 104 based on the cube height. The distribution of local heat transfer on the cube and its base wall are examined, and it is clarified that the heat transfer distribution under the angled condition differs markedly to that for cube oriented perpendicular to the flow, particularly on the top face of the cube. The surface pressure distribution is also investigated, revealing a well-formed pair of leading-edge vortices extending from the front corner of the top face downstream along both front edges for Re>(1−2)×104. Regions of high heat transfer and low pressure are formed along the flow reattachment and separation lines caused by these vortices. In particular, near the front corner of the top face, pressure suction and heat transfer enhancement are pronounced. The average heat transfer on the top face is enhanced at Re>(1−2)×104 over that of a cube aligned perpendicular to the flow.  相似文献

Transient growth due to non-normality is investigated for the Couette-Taylor problem with counter-rotating cylinders as a function of aspect ratio η and Reynolds number Re. For all Re≤500, transient growth is enhanced by curvature, i.e. is greater for η<1 than for η=1, the plane Couette limit. For fixed Re>130, it is found that the greatest transient growth is achieved for η on the linear stability boundary. Transient growth is approximately 20% higher near the Couette-Taylor linear stability boundary at Re=310, η=0.986 than at Re=310, η=1, near the threshold observed for transition in plane Couette flow. For 106<Re<130, the greatest transient growth occurs for a value of η between the linear stability boundary and one. For Re<106, the flow is linearly stable and the greatest transient growth occurs for a value of η less than one. The energy in the optimal inputs is primarily meridional; that in the optimal outputs is primarily azimuthal. Pseudospectra are calculated for two contrasting cases. Influence of unsteady wake on a turbulent separation bubble   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An experimental study was made of turbulent separated and reattaching flow over a blunt body, where unsteady wake was generated by a spoked-wheel type of wake generator with cylindrical rods. The influence of unsteady wake was scrutinized by altering the rotation direction (clockwise and counter-clockwise) and the normalized passing frequency (0 ≤ St H  ≤ 0.20). The Reynolds number based on the cylindrical rod was Re d =375. A phase-averaging technique was employed to characterize the unsteady wake. The effect of different rotation directions, which gave a significant reduction of x R , was examined in detail. The wall pressure fluctuations on the blunt body were analyzed in terms of the spectrum and the coherence. Received: 15 January 2001 / Accepted: 17 July 2001  相似文献

The thermal-hydraulic performance of five oval tubes is experimentally investigated and compared with that for a circular tube in a cross-flow of air. The range of Reynolds numbers ReD is approximately between 1,000 and 11,000. The nominal axis ratios R (major axis/minor axis) for three of the investigated oval tubes are 2, 3, and 4. Two other configurations of oval tubes are also tested, an oval tube R=3 with two wires soldered on its upper and lower top positions, and a cut-oval tube. The performance of the tubes is corrected for the effects of area blockage and turbulence intensity. The measurement results show that the mean Nusselt numbers NuD for the oval tubes are close to that for the circular tube for ReD<4,000. For a higher ReD, the NuD for the oval tubes is lower than that for the circular tube and it decreases with the increase in the axis ratio R. The drag coefficients Cd for the tubes are measured and the combined thermal-hydraulic performance is indicated by the ratio NuD/Cd, which shows a better combined performance for the oval tubes.  相似文献

Although equilibrium of spherical particles under radial migration has been extensively investigated, mostly in macroscale flows with characteristic lengths on the order of centimeters, it is not fully characterized at relatively small Reynolds numbers, 1 ≤ Re ≤ 100. This paper experimentally studies “inertial microfluidic” radial migration of spherical particles in circular Poiseuille flow through a microcapillary. Microparticle tracking experiments are performed to obtain the spatial distribution of the particles by adopting a depth-resolved measurement technique. Through the analysis of the radial distribution of particles, inertial microfluidic circular Poiseuille flow is shown to induce a strong radial migration of particles at substantially small Re, which is quite in contrast to the pipe flows at large Re previously reported. This particle migration phenomenon is so prominent that particle equilibrium positions are formed even at small Re. However, it turns out that there exists a certain critical Re below which particle equilibrium position is almost fixed, but above which it seems to drift toward the channel wall.  相似文献

The objective of this experimental study is to characterise the small-scale turbulence in the intermediate wake of a circular cylinder using measured mean-squared velocity gradients. Seven of the twelve terms which feature in ε, the mean dissipation rate of the turbulent kinetic energy, were measured throughout the intermediate wake at a Reynolds number of Re d  ≈ 3000 based on the cylinder diameter (d). Earlier measurements of the nine major terms of ε by Browne et al. (J Fluid Mech 179: 307–326 1987) at a downstream distance (x) of x = 420d and Re d  ≈ 1170 are also used. Whilst departures from local isotropy are significant at all locations in the wake, local axisymmetry of the small-scale turbulence with respect to the mean flow direction is first satisfied approximately at x = 40d. The approach towards local axisymmetry is discussed in some detail in the context of the relative values of the mean-squared velocity gradients. The data also indicate that axisymmetry is approximately satisfied by the large scales at x/d ≥ 40, suggesting that the characteristics of the small scales reflect to a major extent those of the large scales. Nevertheless, the far-wake data of Browne et al. (1987) show a discernible departure from axisymmetry for both small and large scales.  相似文献

This work experimentally studies the flow characteristics and forced convective heat transfer in a sintered porous channel that filled with sintered copper beads of three average diameters ( 0.830, and 1.163 mm). The pressure drop and the local temperature measurements can be applied to figure out the distributions of the friction coefficient and the heat transfer coefficient. Three sintered porous channels differ in the arrangement of obstacle blocks. Model A has no obstacle. Models B and C have five obstacle blocks facing down and up, respectively, in a sintered porous channel. The range of experimental parameters, porosity, heat flux, and effect of forced convection are 0.370 ≤ ɛ ≤ 0.385, q=0.228, 0.872, 1.862 W/cm2, and 200 ≤ Re d ≤ 800. The permeability and inertia coefficient of each of the three sintered porous channels are analyzed. The results for Model A agree with those obtained by previous investigations in C f distribution. The heat transfer of Model C exceeds that of Model A by approximately 20%. Finally, a series of empirical correlation equations were obtained for practical applications and engineering problems.  相似文献
