Objective

T2 mapping has been used widely in detecting cartilage degeneration in osteoarthritis. Several scanning sequences have been developed in the determination of T2 relaxation times of tissues. However, the derivation of these times may vary from sequence to sequence. This study seeks to evaluate the sequence-dependent differences in T2 quantitation of cartilage, muscle, fat and bone marrow in the knee joint at 3 T.

Methods

Three commercial phantoms and 10 healthy volunteers were studied using 3 T MR. T2 relaxation times of the phantoms, cartilage, muscle, subcutaneous fat and marrow were derived using spin echo (SE), multiecho SE (MESE), fast SE (FSE) with varying echo train length (ETL), spiral and spoiler gradient (SPGR) sequences. The differences between these times were then evaluated using Student's t test. In addition, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) efficiency and coefficient of variation of T2 from each sequence were calculated.

Results

The average T2 relaxation time was 36.38±5.76 ms in cartilage and 34.08±6.55 ms in muscle, ranging from 27 to 45 ms in both tissues. The times for subcutaneous fat and marrow were longer and more varying, ranging from 41 to 143 ms and from 42 to 160 ms, respectively. In FSE acquisition, relaxation time significantly increases as ETL increases (P<.05). In cartilage, the SE acquisition yields the lowest T2 values (27.52±3.10 ms), which is significantly lower than those obtained from other sequences (P<.002). T2 values obtained from spiral acquisition (38.27±6.45 ms) were higher than those obtained from MESE (34.35±5.62 ms) and SPGR acquisition (31.64±4.53 ms). These differences, however, were not significant (P>.05).

Conclusion

T2 quantification can be a valuable tool for the diagnosis of degenerative disease. Several different sequences exist to quantify the relaxation times of tissues. Sequences range in scan time, SNR efficiency, reproducibility and two- or three-dimensional mapping. However, when choosing a sequence for quantitation, it is important to realize that several factors affect the measured T2 relaxation time.  相似文献

Aim

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intra- and interexaminer resegmentation precision of patellar cartilage T2 mapping measurements in healthy subjects.

Materials and Methods

T2-weighted images of patellar cartilage for 10 subjects were acquired. Two individuals manually segmented patellar cartilage at each slice location twice, once on each of two separate days. Bulk average and zonal T2 values for the superficial, middle, and deep layers of cartilage were calculated. The root mean square (RMS) and coefficient of variation (COV) were calculated using the repeated measurements of each slice of each subject by each examiner.

Results

The intraexaminer bulk T2 differences were 0.2±1.0 ms, with an RMS error of 0.7 ms and a COV of 1.9%. The differences of interexaminer bulk T2 values was 1.0±1.4 ms, with an RMS error of 1.2 ms and a COV of 3.3%. The superficial zone of cartilage had the highest zonal variability of T2 values. The average interexaminer T2 values for the superficial, middle and deep zones were 42.2±5.6, 38.1±5.3 and 31.9±4.6 ms, respectively.

Conclusion

The interexaminer variability of calculated T2 values highlights the difficulty of interpreting significant differences of T2 values which are similar in magnitude. The repeatability measurements of patellar cartilage T2 values were less than reported intersession T2 repeatability.  相似文献

Objective

Development of a fast 3D high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocol for improved carotid artery plaque imaging.

Methods

Two patients with carotid atherosclerosis disease underwent 3D high-resolution MRI which included time-of-flight and T1-weighted variable flip angle, fast-spin-echo (FSE) imaging, pre- and post-intravenous gadolinium-based contrast agent administration.

Results

Good quality images with intrinsic blood suppression were obtained pre- and post-contrast administration using a 3D FSE sequence. The plaque burden, lipid core volume, hemorrhage volume and fibrous cap thickness were well determined.

Conclusions

3D high-resolution MR imaging of carotid plaque using TOF and 3D FSE can achieve high isotropic resolution, large coverage, and excellent image quality within a short acquisition time.  相似文献

Purpose

To determine how different methods for calculating T2 affect the resulting T2 values of patellar cartilage.

Materials and Methods

T2-weighted images of patellar cartilage for 10 subjects were acquired using two MRI scanners. T2 values of patellar cartilage were calculated using linear, weighted and nonlinear fitting algorithms for a monoexponential decay equation. T2 values were also calculated for the superficial, middle and deep zones of the cartilage.

Results

All three methods of calculation resulted in significantly different T2 values (P<.0001). The weighted calculation produced the highest T2 values, and the nonlinear calculation produced the lowest T2 values. The average difference of T2 value between the methods was under 5 ms. Similar results were found in a zonal analysis of the tissue. The nonlinear calculation of T2 consistently had the best fit to the acquired data.

Conclusion

The T2 value of patellar cartilage depends on the method of calculation. It is unclear if larger T2 value differences would be seen in subjects diagnosed with osteoarthritis. This study highlights the potential difficulty of comparing different studies with one another based on the method of T2 calculation.  相似文献

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to investigate the need for biexponential signal decay modeling for prostate cancer diffusion signal decays with b-factor over an extended b-factor range.

Materials and Methods

Ten healthy volunteers and 12 patients with a bulky prostate cancer underwent line scan diffusion-weighted MR imaging in which b-factors from 0 to 3000 s/mm2 in 16 steps were sampled. The acquired signal decay curves were fit with both monoexponential and biexponential signal decay functions and a statistical comparison between the two fits was performed.

Results

The biexponential model provided a statistically better fit over the monoexponential model on the peripheral zone (PZ), transitional zone (TZ) and prostate cancer. The fast and slow apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) in the PZ, TZ and cancer were 2.9±0.2, 0.7±0.2×10−3 mm2/ms (PZ); 2.9±0.4, 0.7±0.2×10−3 mm2/ms (TZ); and 1.7±0.4, 0.3±0.1×10−3 mm2/ms (cancer), respectively. The apparent fractions of the fast diffusion component in the PZ, TZ and cancer were 70±10%, 60±10% and 50±10%, respectively. The fast and slow ADCs of cancer were significantly lower than those of TZ and PZ, and the apparent fraction of the fast diffusion component was significantly smaller in cancer than in PZ.

Conclusions

Biexponential diffusion decay functions are required for prostate cancer diffusion signal decay curves when sampled over an extended b-factor range, providing additional, unique tissue characterization parameters for prostate cancer.  相似文献

Objective

The purpose of this study was to implement clinically feasible imaging techniques for determination of T1, T, and T2 values of the ulnocarpal disc and to assess those values in a cohort of asymptomatic subjects at 3 tesla. Resulting values were compared between different age groups, since former histological findings of the ulnocarpal disc indicated frequent early degenerative changes of this tissue starting in the third decade of life, even in asymptomatic subjects.

Materials and methods

Twenty-seven healthy subjects were included in this study. T1 measurements were performed using 3D spoiled gradient-echo (GRE) sequence with variable flip angle. A series of T and T2-weighted images was acquired by a 3D GRE sequence after suitable magnetization preparation. T1,T, and T2 maps of the ulnocarpal disc were calculated pixel-wise. Representative mean values from extended regions were analysed.

Results

Mean T1 values of the ulnocarpal disc ranged from 722 ms in a 39 year-old subject to 1264 ms in a 65 year-old subject, T ranged from 9.2 ms (26 year-old subject) to 25.9 ms (65 year-old subject). Calculated T2 values showed a large range from 4.1 ms to 22.3 ms. T and T1 values tended to increase with age (p < 0.05), whereas T2 did not.

Conclusions

MR relaxometry of the ulnocarpal disc is feasible, and T1,T1ρ, and T2 values show modest variance in asymptomatic subjects. The potential of relaxation mapping to reveal relevant structural changes in patients has to be investigated in further studies.  相似文献

Purpose

To assess the sensitivity and specificity of intra-plaque hemorrhage (IPH), large lipid-rich necrotic core (LR-NC) and ulceration or cap rupture (UCR) for symptomatic carotid plaque characterization and to evaluate a new imaging score [Hemorrhage, Ulceration or cap rupture, Lipid-rich necrotic Core (HULC) score based on the sum of presence/absence of IPH, UCR and LR-NC; range 0–3] for assessment of recently symptomatic carotid plaques.

Material and methods

Twenty-seven recently symptomatic (< 8 weeks) and 36 asymptomatic patients with a carotid plaque thicker than 2 mm were prospectively imaged on a 3-T magnetic resonance (MR) system using high-resolution, multi-contrast MR sequences. Prior to analysis, all images were reviewed to assess image quality of each sequence. Sensitivity and specificity of IPH, LR-NC, UCR and HULC scores were calculated.

Results

Fifty-one patients were analyzed (26 symptomatic carotids and 67 asymptomatic carotids) after exclusion of studies with poor image quality. Sensitivity and specificity for symptomatic carotid plaque was, respectively, 46.1% and 97% for IPH, 84.6% and 73.1% for UCR and 80.7% and 76.1% for LR-NC. A HULC score of 2 or more showed a sensitivity of 73% and a specificity of 92.5%.

Conclusion

At 3 T, intra-plaque hemorrhage is the most specific criterion to characterize symptomatic carotid plaque. The HULC score offers the best compromise between sensitivity and specificity.  相似文献

Purpose

The purpose was to study the effect of estrogen deficiency on contrast agent diffusion into intervertebral disc in a rat model.

Materials and Methods

Seven-month-old female Sprague–Dawley rats were used. Fourteen rats had ovariectomy, and nine rats had sham surgery. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of sagittal midsection of lumbar spine was performed with a 1.5-T magnet. Dynamic MRI was performed after a bolus injection of Gd-DOTA (0.3 mmol/kg) through tail vein. Eight hundred images were acquired at 0.6 s per acquisition. Regions of interests were drawn over three discs per rat. Maximum enhancement (Emax) and enhancement slope (Eslope) were evaluated. MRI was carried out at baseline and 8 weeks postsurgery.

Result

All disc enhancements demonstrated an initial fast wash-in phase followed by a second slower wash-in phase. For initial wash-in phase, E1max and E1slope of all rats remained unchanged at the two time points. For second wash-in phase, E2max and E2slope of control rats remained unchanged, while with ovariectomized rats, E2max showed reduction at 8 weeks (4.5%±5.6%) compared to baseline (10.3%±6.3%, P=.037), and E2slope was lower at 8 weeks (0.015±0.017) than the baseline (0.029±0.022), although it was not statistically significant (P=.101).

Conclusion

Ovariectomy induced detectable decrease in second wash-in phase of contrast agent into lumbar disc.  相似文献

Macroscopic samples of near-surface water in pores or fractures of rocks down to 100 m and deeper are studied by the measurement of proton relaxation and echo in the Earth’s magnetic field. The excitation and reception of the surface nuclear magnetic resonance (SNMR) signal is accomplished with the help of an antenna, circle or 8-shaped (for the minimization of the outer electromagnetic jamming influence), placed at the surface. The frequency of magnetic resonance in the case considered amounts to several kilohertz, the dead time of the instrumentation to several milliseconds. Water in extremely small pores of water-resisting rocks (e.g., in argillaceous grounds), is chemically bound, crystallization or frozen water has smaller times of spin relaxation and is not registered. The distribution of water concentration with depth is determined by inversion of an integral equation, including the model and measured dependences of the SNMR signal against the intensity of excitation. The current state of the art of the SNMR sounding and perspectives of this method on the basis of free induction decay and spin echo detection and relaxation times measurement are presented. Free induction decayT 2 * equal to 60 ms, spin-echoT 2 equal to 220 ms, and inversion-recoveryT 1 equal to 700 ms relaxation times have been measured for medium-to coarse-grained sand aquifer. Microscopic characteristics of the aquifer — longitudinal relaxivity (7·10?3 cm/s), transverse relaxivity (3.5·10?2 cm/s), and local magnetic field gradient (2·10?2 G/cm) — have been estimated from experimental data. The importance of spin relaxation and echo measurements for obtaining the information about the microstructure of pores and fractures, as well as filtration, properties of aquifers and diamagnetic, paramagnetic and hydrocarbon contamination, is emphasized.  相似文献

Purpose

To investigate progression of cryoinjury in pigs using contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as well as optical spectroscopy and imaging.

Methods

Cryoinjury was produced in 16 pigs in vivo and investigated using Gd-and Mn-enhanced MRI, optical imaging/spectroscopy and histology in acute and chronic setting up to 4 weeks after the injury.

Results

(1) Acute cryoinjury resulted in formation of a lesion with a severely reduced rate of sub-epicardial indocyanine green (intravascular optical flow tracer) passage. In vivo late Gd-enhanced MRI showed a ∼10 mm deep hypointense area that was surrounded by a hyperintense rim while ex vivo Mn-enhanced MRI (MEMRI) detected a homogenous hypointense zone. Histological and spectroscopic examination revealed embolic erythrocytes blockages within the cryolesion with a thin necrotic rim neighboring the normal myocardium. (2) Chronic 4-week cryoinjury was characterized by uniform Gd-enhancement, whereas MEMRI revealed reduced Mn2+enhancement. Histological examination showed replacement of the cryoinjured myocardium by scar tissue.

Conclusions

Acute cryoinjury resulted in formation of a no-reflow core embolized by erythrocytes and surrounded by a rim of necrotic tissue. Upon injury progression, the no-reflow zone shrunk and was completely replaced with scar tissue by 4 weeks after injury.  相似文献

Purpose

To include the flip angle distribution caused by the slice profile into the model used for describing the relaxation curves observed in inversion recovery Look–Locker FLASH T1 mapping for a more accurate determination of the relaxation parameters.

Materials and methods

For each inversion time, the flip angle dependent signal of the mono-exponential relaxation model is integrated across the slice profile. The resulting Consideration of Slice Profiles (CSP) relaxation curves are compared to the mono-exponential signal model in numerical simulations as well as in phantom and in-vivo experiments.

Results

All measured relaxation curves showed systematic deviations from a mono-exponential curve increasing with flip angle and T1 but decreasing with repetition time. Additionally, the accuracy of T1 was found to be largely dependent on the temporal coverage of the relaxation curve. All these systematic errors were largely reduced by the CSP model.

Conclusion

The proposed CSP model represents a useful extension of the conventionally used mono-exponential relaxation model. Despite inherent model inaccuracies, the mono-exponential model was found to be sufficient for many T1 mapping situations. However, if only a poor temporal coverage of the relaxation process is achievable or a very precise modeling of the relaxation course is needed as in model-based techniques, the mono-exponential model leads to systematic errors and the CSP model should be used instead.  相似文献

Proton nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation times, T1 and T2, of water in unfixed gray and white matter from normal and edematous rabbit brain tissues were measured in vitro at 23°C and 100 MHz to evaluate the effects of the temperature (?25°C to 37°C) and duration (0 to 96 h) of tissue storage on relaxation times. T1 and T2 tended to decrease during storage, probably from slow dehydration of the tissue. This effect was greatest in tissues stored at 37°C and least in those stored at 4 and ?25°C; decreases in T1 and T2 were greater in white matter than in gray matter. Freezing brain tissue to ?25°C caused a sudden decrease in the T2 of normal white matter. Relaxation times were constant for 5 h in tissues stored at 23°C and for 40 h at 4°C. These results correlated well with corresponding tissue water loss.  相似文献

Purpose

Quantitative imaging of the rat skin was performed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 900 MHz.

Materials and methods

A number of imaging techniques utilized for multiple contrast included magnetization transfer contrast, spin-lattice relaxation constant (T1-weighting), combination of T2-weighting with magnetic field inhomogeneity (T2*-weighting), magnetization transfer weighting and diffusion tensor weighting. These were used to obtain 2D slices and 3D multislice-multiecho images with high magnetic resonance contrast. These 2D and 3D imaging techniques were combined to achieve high-resolution MRI.

Results

Oil–water phantom showed distinct fat-water contrast. The dermis and epidermis, including the stratum corneum remnants, of nude rat skin were distinct due to their proton magnetic resonance as a result of proton interactions with the skin interstitial tissue. Combined details obtained from high-resolution, high-quality ex vivo skin images with different multicontrast characteristics generated better differentiation of skin layers, sublayers and significant correlation (r2=0.4927 for MRI area, r2=0.3068 for histology area; P<.0148) of MR data with co-registered histological areas of the epidermis as well as the hair follicle.

Conclusion

The multiple contrast approach provided a noninvasive ex vivo MRI visualization with semi-quantitative assessment of the major skin structures including the stratum corneum remnants, epidermis, hair, papillary dermis, reticular dermis and hypodermis.  相似文献

Purpose

The purpose of our study was to evaluate the feasibility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxides (USPIO) in the detection of experimentally induced endometriosis.

Materials and methods

Endometriosis was surgically induced in rats by transplanting an autologous fragment of uterine tissue onto the inner surface of the abdominal wall, the posterior surface of the uterine body and the arterial cascades of the small intestines adjacent to mesenteric blood vessels. Six weeks later, MRI using Gd-DTPA and USPIO was performed for the evaluation of the ectopic uterine tissue (EUT). A scoring system was developed for image interpretation (0=absence, 1=probably absence, 2=probably presence and 3=presence). We defined MR index (MRIx) as the sum of T1-weighted and enhanced T1-weighted and T2-weighted image scores, and USPIO MRIx (MRIx+USPIO) as the MRIx score plus the score of USPIO-enhanced T2-weighted image.

Results

The MRIx+USPIO was also higher in the successfully autotransplanted group than in the failed group (6.19±1.72 versus 3.94±1.20, P<.001). There was also a significant linear relationship between MRIx+USPIO and pathologic status (R2=0.494, P<.001). Thirty-one (64.6%) of the 48 implanted uterine tissues were histologically confirmed on pathologic review. The area of MRIx and MRIx+USPIO in the detection of EUT more than 3 mm in size was 0.739 and 0.913, respectively.

Conclusion

Our results suggest that USPIO-enhanced MRI could be a novel diagnostic tool for diagnosis in experimentally induced peritoneal endometriosis.  相似文献

Purpose

The purpose was to compare T2* relaxation times and proton density fat-fraction (PDFF) values between brown (BAT) and white (WAT) adipose tissue in lean and ob/ob mice.

Materials and Methods

A group of lean male mice (n=6) and two groups of ob/ob male mice placed on similar 4-week (n=6) and 8-week (n=8) ad libitum diets were utilized. The animals were imaged at 3 T using a T2*-corrected chemical-shift-based water–fat magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method that provides simultaneous estimation of T2* and PDFF on a voxel-wise basis. Regions of interest were drawn within the interscapular BAT and gonadal WAT depots on co-registered T2* and PDFF maps. Measurements were assessed using analysis of variance, Bonferroni-adjusted t test for multigroup comparisons and the Tukey post hoc test.

Results

Significant differences (P<.01) in BAT T2* and PDFF were observed between the lean and ob/ob groups. The ob/ob animals exhibited longer BAT T2* and greater PDFF than lean animals. However, only BAT PDFF was significantly different (P<.01) between the two ob/ob groups. When comparing BAT to WAT within each group, T2* and PDFF values were consistently lower in BAT than WAT (P<.01). The difference was most prominent in the lean animals. In both ob/ob groups, BAT exhibited very WAT-like appearances and properties on the MRI images.

Conclusion

T2* and PDFF are lower in BAT than WAT. This is likely due to variations in tissue composition. The values were consistently lower in lean mice than in ob/ob mice, suggestive of the former's greater demand for BAT thermogenesis and reflective of leptin hormone deficiencies and diminished BAT metabolic activity in the latter.  相似文献

Purpose

This study discusses prominent signal intensity of T1/T2 prolongation of subcortical white matter within the anterior temporal region in premature infant brains that radiologists may encounter when interpreting conventional screening MRIs.

Materials and Methods

T1- and T2-weighted images of 69 preterm and term infants with no neurological abnormalities or developmental delays were evaluated retrospectively for areas of prominent signal intensity of T1/T2 prolongation in white matter. We measured signal intensities of anterior temporal white matter, deep temporal white matter, frontopolar white matter and subcortical white matter of the precentral gyrus. We accessed chronological changes in signal intensity in the anterior and deep temporal white matter. We also analyzed variance tests among the signal intensity ratios to the ipsilateral thalamus of white matter areas by gestational age.

Results

There was high frequency of prominent signal intensity of T1/T2 prolongation in the temporal tip, particularly at a gestational age of 36–38 weeks. Signal intensity ratio of the anterior temporal white matter was lower on T1-weighted images and higher on T2-weighted images, and the finding became less prominent with increasing gestational age. The signal intensity ratios of anterior temporal white matter at a gestational age of 36–37 weeks and 38–39 weeks were significantly different from other regions.

Conclusion

Prominent signal intensity of T1/T2 prolongation of subcortical white matter of the anterior temporal region is seen in normal premature infants, especially those at 36–39 gestational weeks. Although it is a prominent finding, radiologists should understand that these findings do not represent a pathological condition.  相似文献

The dispersion curves of the dielectric response for KHSeO4 were obtained in the radio frequency range at several isotherms below the fast proton conducting phase (T?<?415 K). The results reveal a distinct dielectric relaxation at low frequency, which is about 682 Hz at 320 K, and then, it shifts to higher frequencies (~10 kHz) as the temperature increases. The f max vs. reciprocal T shows an activated relaxation process with an activation energy of 0.5 eV, which is in close agreement with that associated with transport of charge carriers. We suggest that the observed dielectric relaxation could be attributed to polarization induced by the proton jump and selenate tetrahedral reorientations. The displacement of mobile H+ proton accompanied by SeO 4 ??2 tetrahedra reorientations creates structural distortion in both sublattices which induce localized dipoles like HSeO 4 ? .  相似文献

In a spin-correlated radical pair system, anomalous pulse-angle and phase dependence of electron spin echo and multiple-quantum echoes were theoretically calculated by Tanget al. (J. Chem. Phys.106, 7471 (1997)). The maximum intensity of the out of phase signal at 45 degree of spin rotation angle was experimentally verified in two-pulse echoes of the light-induced P700+A 1 ? radical pair in Photosystem I. The values,D = 1.64 G andJ = 0.00 G, fit well with the experimental ESEEM spectra. Single and double quantum echoes were observed at the value oft = τ andT = 2τ with the laser flash-t-P170,ζ1-τ-P2140, ζ2-T pulse sequence, which led to determination of the relaxation time T23 between the singlet and triplet ¦T0〉 states. The relaxation times of the zero and single quantum transitions were determinedT 23 ≈ 100 ns andT 2 = 1000 ns, respectively. The field sweep ESE signal shape can be fitted with the hyperfine inhomogeneities of 7 G for P700+ and of 10 G for A 1 ? .  相似文献

Purpose

A direct correlation between T, T2 and quantified proteoglycan and collagen contents in human osteoarthritic cartilage has yet to be documented. We aimed to investigate the orientation effect on T and T2 values in human osteoarthritic cartilage and to quantify the correlation between T, T2 vs. biochemical composition and histology in human osteoarthritic cartilage.

Materials and methods

Thirty-three cartilage specimens were collected from patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty due to severe osteoarthritis and scanned with a 3T MR scanner for T and T2 quantification. Nine specimens were scanned at three different orientations with respect to the B0: 0°, 90° and 54.7°. Core punches were taken after MRI. Collagen and proteoglycan contents were quantified using biochemical assays. Histology sections were graded using Mankin scores. The correlation between imaging parameters, biochemical contents and histological scores were studied.

Results

Both mean T and T2 at 54.7° were significantly higher than those measured at 90° and 0°, with T showing less increase compared to T2. R (1/T) values had a significant but moderate correlation with proteoglycan contents (R=.45, P=.002), while R2 (1/T2) was not correlated with proteoglycan. No significant correlation was found between relaxation times (T or T2) and collagen contents. The T values of specimen sections with high Mankin scores were significantly higher than those with low Mankin scores (P<.05).

Conclusions

Quantitative MRI has a great potential to provide noninvasive imaging biomarkers for cartilage degeneration in osteoarthritis.  相似文献

Measurements of the spin-spin relaxation time T 2 of the short-lived $\upbeta $ -emitter $^{12}B (I^{\uppi }$ = 1?+?, T 1/2 = 20 ms) in Si have been performed. By applying the spin echo method to $\upbeta $ -NMR measurements, the intrinsic T 2 for 12B in Si was successfully determined with the effect of the static magnetic field inhomogeneity removed. The temperature dependence of T 2 for 12B in Si shows that T 2 becomes longer with increasing temperature, which seems to reflect the effect of motional narrowing.  相似文献
