Post-buckling behaviour of sandwich plates with functionally graded material (FGM) face sheets under uniform temperature rise loading is considered. It is assumed that the plate is in contact with a Pasternak-type elastic foundation during deformation, which acts in both compression and tension. The derivation of equations is based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory. Thermomechanical non-homogeneous properties of FGM layers vary smoothly by the distribution of power law across the thickness, and temperature dependency of material constituents is taken into account. Using the non-linear von-Karman strain-displacement relations, the equilibrium and compatibility equations of imperfect sandwich plates with FGM face sheets are derived. The boundary conditions for the plate are assumed to be simply supported in all edges. The governing equations are reduced to two coupled equation in terms of stress function and lateral deflection. Employing the single mode approach combined with Galerkin technique, an approximate closed-form solution is presented to calculate the critical buckling temperature and post-buckling equilibrium path of the plate. Presented numerical examples contain the influences of power law index, sandwich plate geometry, geometrical imperfection, temperature dependency, and the elastic foundation coefficients.

A postbuckling analysis is presented for a functionally graded cylindrical shell subjected to torsion in thermal environments. Heat conduction and temperature-dependent material properties are both taken into account. The temperature field considered is assumed to be a uniform distribution over the shell surface and varied in the thickness direction. The material properties of functionally graded materials (FGMs) are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents, and are assumed to be temperature-dependent. The governing equations are based on a higher order shear deformation theory with a von Kármán–Donnell-type of kinematic non-linearity. The non-linear prebuckling deformations and initial geometric imperfections of the shell are both taken into account. A singular perturbation technique is employed to determine the buckling load and postbuckling equilibrium paths. The numerical illustrations concern the postbuckling behavior of twist, perfect and imperfect, FGM cylindrical shells under different sets of thermal fields. The results reveal that the volume fraction distribution of FGMs has a significant effect on the buckling load and postbuckling behavior of FGM cylindrical shells subjected to torsion. They also confirm that the torsional postbuckling equilibrium path is weakly unstable and the shell structure is virtually imperfection–insensitive.

This paper presents a thorough and comprehensive investigation of non-linear buckling and postbuckling analyses of pin-ended shallow circular arches subjected to a uniform radial load and which have equal elastic rotational end-restraints. The differential equations of equilibrium for non-linear buckling and postbuckling are established based on a virtual work approach. Exact solutions for the non-linear bifurcation, limit point and lowest buckling loads are obtained; in particular, exact solutions for the non-linear postbuckling equilibrium paths are derived. The criteria for switching between fundamental buckling and postbuckling modes are developed in terms of critical values of a geometric parameter for an arch, with exact solutions for these critical values of geometric parameter being obtained. Analytical solutions of non-linear buckling and postbuckling problems for arches with rotational end-restraints are of great interest, since they constitute one of the very few closed-form analyses of buckling and postbuckling behaviour of continuous structural systems. These exact solutions are a contribution to the non-linear structural mechanics of arches, as well as providing useful benchmark solutions for verifying non-linear numerical analyses.

The elastic buckling behavior of rectangular perforated plates was studied by using the finite element method in this study. Circular cutout was chosen at different locations along the principal x-axis of plates subjected to linearly varying loading in order to evaluate the effect of cutout location on the buckling behavior of plates. The results show that the center of a circular hole should not be placed at the end half of the outer panel for all loading patterns. Furthermore, the presence of a circular hole always causes a decrease in the elastic buckling load of plates subjected to bending, even if the circular hole is not in the outer panel.

Summary This paper is the continuation of a research on the stability and postbuckling behaviour of elastic structures; in the first Part [n. 4, Vol. X, 1975 of this Journal], the potential energy of elastic tridimensional bodies has been defined in a suitable configuration space, and its properties of regularity have been studied. According to the program given in the previous Paper, we examine now the potential energy functional for some monodimensional and bidimensional structural models. Then the Part II of this research is developed so that the Liapunov stability of the equilibrium configuration of continuous elastic structures is analyzed by means of suitable energy criteria.

Based on the three-dimensional theory, this work presents a direct displacement method to investigate the free axisymmetric vibration of transversely isotropic circular plates, whose material is functionally graded and properties obey the exponential law along the thickness direction of the plate. Under two boundary conditions, the solution satisfies all basic equations and the Corresponding boundary condition at every point. Thus, it is three-dimensional exact. Numerical examples are presented and compared with previous works. The present method can also be extended to the case of arbitrary distribution of the material properties along the thickness direction of the plate.

The thermal buckling and postbuckling analysis of laminated composite beams with temperature-dependent material properties is presented. The governing equations are based on the first-order shear deformation beam theory (FSDT) and the geometrical nonlinearity is modeled using Green's strain tensor in conjunction with the von Karman assumptions. The differential quadrature method (DQM) as an accurate, simple and computationally efficient numerical tool is adopted to discretize the governing equations and the related boundary conditions. A direct iterative method is employed to obtain the critical temperature (bifurcation point) as well as the nonlinear equilibrium path (the postbuckling behavior) of symmetrically laminated beams. The applicability, rapid rate of convergence and high accuracy of the method are established via different examples and by comparing the results with those of existing in literature. Then, the effects of temperature dependence of the material properties, boundary conditions, length-to-thickness ratios, number of layers and ply angle on the thermal buckling and postbuckling characteristic of symmetrically laminated beams are investigated.

A thermal postbuckling analysis is presented for a moderately thick rectangular plate subjected to (1) uniform and non-uniform
tent-like temperature loading; and (2) combined axial compression and uniform temperature loading. The initial geometrical
imperfection of plate is taken into account. The formulations are based on the Reissner-Mindlin plate theory considering the
effects of rotary inertia and transverse shear deformation. The analysis uses a deflection-type perturbation technique to
determine the thermal buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. Numerical examples are presented that relate to the
performances of perfect and imperfect, moderately thick rectangular plates and are compared with the results predicted by
the thin plate theory.

Buckling analysis of the functionally graded viscoelastic circular plates has not been carried out so far. In the present paper, a series solution is developed for buckling analysis of radially graded FG viscoelastic circular plates with variable thickness resting on two-parameter elastic foundations, based on Mindlin's plate theory. The complex modulus approach in combination with the elastic–viscoelastic correspondence principle is employed to obtain the solution for various edge conditions. A comprehensive sensitivity analysis is carried out to evaluate effects of various parameters on the buckling load. Results reveal that the viscoelastic behavior of the materials may postpone the buckling occurrence and the stiffness reduction due to the section variations may be compensated by the graded material properties.

A theoretical framework for analyzing the pre- and postbuckling response of composite laminates and plates with piezoactuators and sensors is presented. The mechanics include nonlinear effects due to large rotations and stress stiffening, and are incorporated into a coupled mixed-field piezoelectric laminate theory. Using the previous mechanics, a nonlinear finite element method and an incremental-iterative solution are formulated for the analysis of nonlinear adaptive plate structures subject to in-plane electromechanical loading. A novel eight-node nonlinear plate finite element is also developed. Evaluation cases predict the buckling and postbuckling response of adaptive composite beams and plates with piezoelectric actuators and sensors. The case of piezoelectric buckling and postbuckling induced by the actuators is addressed and quantified. Finally, the possibility to actively mitigate the mechanical buckling and postbuckling response of adaptive piezocomposite plates is illustrated.

An infinitely long, axially compressed, circular cylindrical shell with an imperfection in the shape of the axisymmetric classical buckling mode, undergoing steady or non-steady creep, is analyzed. The axisymmetric problem is solved incrementally using nonlinear shell equations The ratio of the applied stress to the classical buckling stress determines if the shell will collapse axisymmetrically or if it will bifurcate into a nonaxisymmetric mode, and whether or not bifurcation will result in instantaneous collapse. The bifurcation problem is formulated exactly and the initial postbuckling behavior is investigated via an asymptotic elastic analysis, based on Koiter's general theory Numerical results are compared with available experimental data.

Multiobjective design and control optimization of composite laminated plates is presented to minimize the postbuckling dynamic response and maximize the buckling load. The control objective aims at dissipating the postbuckling elastic energy of the laminate with the minimum possible expenditure of control energy using a closed-loop distributed force. The layer thicknesses and fiber orientations are taken as design variables. The objectives of the optimization problem are formulated based on a shear deformation theory including the von-Karman non-linear effect for various cases of boundary conditions. The non-linear control problem is solved iteratively until an appropriate convergence criterion is satisfied based on Liapunov–Bellman theory. Liapunov function is taken as a sum of positive definite functions with different degrees. Comparative examples for three-layer symmetric and four-layer antisymmetric laminates are given for various cases of edges conditions. Graphical study is carried out to assess the accuracy of results obtained due to the successive iterations. The influences of the boundary conditions, orthotropy ratio, shear deformation, aspect ratio on the laminate optimal design are elucidated.

A theory is derived for calculation of the influence of elastic edge restraints on the vibrations and buckling of stiffened cylindrical shells. The stiffeners are considered “smeared” and the edge restraints can be axial, radial, circumferential or rotational. Extensive computations are performed for special kinds of stringer-stiffened shells, and the theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results. A method of definition of equivalent elastically restrained boundary conditions by use of vibration tests is discussed. Application of this technique to tests on 10 shells significantly reduces the scatter in the ratio of experimental to predicted buckling loads.

Full-range analysis for the buckling and postbuckling of rectangular plates under in-plane compression has been made by perturbation technique which takes deflection as itsperturbation parameter. In this paper the effects of initial geometric imperfection on the postbuckling behaviorof plates have been discussed. It is seen that the effect of initial imperfection on the inelasticpostbuckling of plates is sensitive.By comparison,it is found that the theoretical results ofthis paper are in good agreement with experiments.

The postbuckling of the eccentrically stiffened circular cylindrical shells made of functionally graded materials(FGMs),subjected to the axial compressive load and external uniform pressure and filled inside by the elastic foundations in the thermal environments,is investigated with an analytical method. The shells are reinforced by FGM stringers and rings. The thermal elements of the shells and stiffeners in the fundamental equations are considered. The equilibrium and nonlinear stability equations in terms of the displacement components for the stiffened shells are derived with the third-order shear deformation theory and Leckhniskii smeared stiffener technique. The closed-form expressions for determining the buckling load and postbuckling load-deflection curves are obtained with the Galerkin method. The effects of the stiffeners, the foundations, the material and dimensional parameters, and the pre-existent axial compressive and thermal load are considered.

Thermal postbuckling analysis is presented for graphene-reinforced composite (GRC) laminated cylindrical shells under a uniform temperature field. The GRC layers are arranged in a functionally graded (FG) graphene reinforcement pattern by varying the graphene volume fraction in each GRC layer. The GRCs possess temperature dependent and anisotropic material properties and the extended Halpin–Tsai model is employed to evaluate the GRC material properties. The governing equations are based on a higher order shear deformation shell theory and include the von Kármán-type kinematic nonlinearity and the thermal effects. A singular perturbation method in conjunction with a two-step perturbation approach is applied to determine the thermal postbuckling equilibrium path for a GRC shell with or without geometric imperfection. An iterative scheme is developed to obtain numerical thermal buckling temperatures and thermal postbuckling load–deflection curves for the shells. The results reveal that the FG-X piece-wise FG graphene distribution can enhance the thermal postbuckling capacity of the shells when the shells are subjected to a uniform temperature loading.

This paper presents a general solution of the three-dimensional governing equations for the axisymmetric buckling problem of transversely isotropic media. The solution is expressed by a displacement function that satisfies a homogeneous fourth-order partial differential equation. Using this general solution, the axisymmetric buckling of circular and annular plates is investigated and exact solutions are obtained for appropriate boundary conditions. Numerical results are considered for clamped and simply supported circular and annular plates in comparison with existent results.
