A note on Weyl's theorem

The Kato spectrum of an operator is deployed to give necessary and sufficient conditions for Browder's theorem to hold.

     

Some compactness theorems via m-Bakry–Émery and m-modified Ricci curvatures with negative m

Stimulated by S. Ohta and W. Wylie, we establish some compactness theorems for complete Riemannian manifolds via m-Bakry–Émery and m-modified Ricci curvatures with negative m. Our results may be considered as generalizations of the classical compactness theorems via Ricci curvature due to S.B. Myers, W. Ambrose, G.J. Galloway, and J. Cheeger, M. Gromov, and M. Taylor, and relax some previous compactness criteria for complete Riemannian manifolds via m-Bakry–Émery and m-modified Ricci curvatures obtained when m is a positive constant or infinity.     

Weyl type theorems and hypercyclic operators II

In this note, the relation between hypercyclic operator matrices (or supercyclic operator matrices) and the operator matrices which satisfy Weyl type theorems is discussed. Also, using a variant of the essential approximate point spectrum, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions for for which a-Browder's theorem or a-Weyl's theorem holds.

     

The Additivity Theorem in K-Theory

We present a method for converting Theorem B style proofs in algebraic K-theory to Theorem A style proofs and apply it to the additivity theorem.     

A note on the colorful fractional Helly theorem

Helly’s theorem is a classical result concerning the intersection patterns of convex sets in ${\mathbb{R}}^d$. Two important generalizations are the colorful version and the fractional version. Recently, Bárány et al. combined the two, obtaining a colorful fractional Helly theorem. In this paper, we give an improved version of their result.     

Analytically Class A operators and Weyl's theorem

Using the new spectrum set defined in this note, we give the necessary and sufficient condition for T which the Weyl's theorem holds. We also consider how the Weyl's theorem survives for analytically Class A operators.     

An Elementary Proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry (Dedicated to Alfred Frölicher)

The following version of the fundamental theorem is proved: Let V, W be vector spaces and g: P(V)\E P(W) a morphism between the associated projective spaces. If the image of g is not contained in a line, then there exists a semilinear map f: V W which induces g. The difficulty lies in the fact that the homomorphism of division rings associated to the map f can be nonsurjective. As an application, a short proof of Wigner's theorem is also proposed.     

Essential point spectra of operator matrices trough local spectral theory

For A∈B(X), B∈B(Y) and C∈B(Y,X), let MC be the operator defined on X⊕Y by . In this paper, we study defect set (Σ(A)∪Σ(B))?Σ(MC), where Σ is the Browder spectrum, the essential approximate point spectrum and Browder essential approximate point spectrum. We then give application for Weyl's and Browder's theorems.     

An Intersection Theorem on an Unbounded Set and Its Application to the Fair Allocation Problem

We prove the following theorem. Let m and n be any positive integers with mn, and let be a subset of the n-dimensional Euclidean space ⁿ . For each i=1, . . . , m, there is a class of subsets M _i ^j of ^Tn . Assume that for each i=1, . . . , m, that M _i ^j is nonempty and closed for all i, j, and that there exists a real number B(i, j) such that and its jth component _{xjB(i, j)} imply . Then, there exists a partition of {1, . . . , n} such that for all i and We prove this theorem based upon a generalization of a well-known theorem of Birkhoff and von Neumann. Moreover, we apply this theorem to the fair allocation problem of indivisible objects with money and obtain an existence theorem.     

Chen's Theorem with Small Primes

Let N be a sufficiently large even integer. In this paper it is proved that the equation N = p+P ₂, p≤N ^0,95, is solvable, where p denotes a prime and P ₂ denotes an almost prime with at most two prime factors. Received April 13, 1999, Accepted December 18, 2000     

On Suslin homology with integral coefficients in characteristic zero (with an appendix by Bruno Kahn)

We show that the Suslin homology group with integral coefficients of a scheme X separated of finite type over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 is a direct sum of a uniquely divisible group, finite copies of $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$, and a finitely generated group. We also study the possible type of homomorphisms between such groups induced by the morphisms of schemes. An appendix written by Bruno Kahn is included, which simplifies the proofs and generalizes the results.     

The matching theorems in G-convex spaces with applications

The purpose of this paper is to establish some new matching theorems in G-convex spaces and, as applications, to obtain some new fixed point theorems, section theorems and a minimax theorem in G-convex spaces. The results presented in this paper improve and generalize the corresponding results in [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11] and [12].     

Consistent invertibility and Weyl's theorem

A Banach space operator T∈B(X) may be said to be “consistent in invertibility” provided that for each S∈B(X), TS and ST are either both or neither invertible. The induced spectrum contributes the conditions equivalent to various forms of “Weyl's theorem”.

A converse to a theorem of Adamyan, Arov and Krein

A well known theorem of Akhiezer, Adamyan, Arov and Krein gives a criterion (in terms of the signature of a certain Hermitian matrix) for interpolation by a meromorphic function in the unit disc with at most poles subject to an -norm bound on the unit circle. One can view this theorem as an assertion about the Hardy space of analytic functions on the disc and its reproducing kernel. A similar assertion makes sense (though it is not usually true) for an arbitrary Hilbert space of functions. One can therefore ask for which spaces the assertion is true. We answer this question by showing that it holds precisely for a class of spaces closely related to .

     

Another note on Weyl's theorem

``Weyl's theorem holds" for an operator on a Banach space when the complement in the spectrum of the ``Weyl spectrum" coincides with the isolated points of spectrum which are eigenvalues of finite multiplicity. This is close to, but not quite the same as, equality between the Weyl spectrum and the ``Browder spectrum", which in turn ought to, but does not, guarantee the spectral mapping theorem for the Weyl spectrum of polynomials in . In this note we try to explore these distinctions.

     

Brill-Noether theory for rank two vector bundles generated by their sections

We here study the Brill-Noether theory for rank two vector bundles generated by their sections. We generalize the vanishing theorem, the Clifford theorem and the existence theorem to such bundles.     

Fibred Frobenius theorem

We give a version of Frobenius Theorem for fibred manifolds whose proof is shorter than the “short proofs” of the classical Frobenius Theorem. In fact, what shortens the proof is the fibred form of the statement, since it permits an inductive process which is not possible from the standard statement.
