The phase diagram of the three-state chiral clock model, which is known to exhibit commensurate and incommensurate ordered modulated structures, is investigated in the mean-field approximation. First a numerical analysis of the mean-field equations is presented. It is based in the main on the observation that these equations define a non-linear mapping in a four dimensional space. This method of analyzing the mean-field theory proves particularly useful in the determination of the pinning transition of the incommensurate structures. Next the phase diagram is investigated analytically by means of a Landau expansion modified such as to include domain walls. It is found that in the vicinity of the order-disorder transition most features of the phase diagram can be explained quantitatively by this expansion. Finally we present a systematic lowtemperature expansion of the mean-field theory, showing that the low-temperature phase diagram obtained in the mean-field approximation is different from that of the full model.Dedicated to B. The three-state chiral clock model is studied by means of the Bethe approximation. While the phase diagram obtained by this method resembles the mean-field phase diagram in the vicinity of the boundary to the paramagnetic phase, a significant improvement is achieved in the low and intermediate temperature regions: By a low-temperature expansion of the free energy, which is carried out to third order, we find that, up to this order, the Bethe approximation exactly reproduces the results of the low-temperature analysis of the full model by Yeomans and Fisher. This and the numerical evaluation of the free energy show that, as far as the longer wavelength phases are concerned, the Bethe approximation is in keeping with predictions of Yeomans and Fisher for low temperature, where mean-field theory is qualitatively misleading. At higher temperatures more complicated structures are found to evolve from the basic low-temperature phases by structure combination branching processes in the same fashion as in the phase diagram of the ANNNI model.  相似文献

The spin-1 Blume–Capel model on a square lattice is studied by using an effective-field theory (EFT) with correlation. We propose an expression for the free energy within the EFT. The phase diagram is constructed in the temperature (T) and single-ion anisotropy amplitude (D) plane. The first-order transition line is obtained by Maxwell construction (comparison between free energies). Our results predict first-order transitions at low temperatures and large anisotropy strengths, which correspond in the phase diagram to the existence of a tricritical point (TCP). We compare our results with mean-field approximation (MFA), that show a qualitative correct behavior for the phase diagram.  相似文献

The phase diagram of Z(N) lattice gauge theories is examined in the mean-field approach. It is shown how large non-perturbative fluctuations around the mean-field may naturally occur in these theories. When this happens, a massless phase which is absent in the mean-field approximation is dynamically generated. An order parameter which characterizes the Coulomb to Higgs phase transition is introduced. The predictions for the values of the critical coupling for this transition are in excellent agreement with the Monte Carlo data in four dimensions.  相似文献

Some important observations on the magnetic susceptibility of concentration Cumn alloys by Gibbs et al. are reinterpreted in the light of the mean-field theory of classical vector spin models with competing exchange interactions. The phase diagram proposed by Gibbs et al. is shown to be in qualitative agreement with the corresponding phase diagram predicted by mean-field theory.  相似文献

We do mean-field perturbation theory for U(1) lattice gauge theory in the axial gauge, and evaluate corrections from fluctuations up to fourth order for the free energy and plaquette energy. Comparing with similar results previously obtained in the Feynman gauge we find, to those orders studied, a gauge dependence of the size of the first correction term neglected with one exception. This gauge dependence decreases rapidly as the order of the approximation is increased. To any finite order, results in axial gauge are better approximations than results in the Feynman gauge. We speculate why. Assuming it to be generally true, we evaluate the first correction beyond the one-loop mean-field approximation to the free energy of SU(2) gauge theory with Wilson action in the axial gauge. This correction brings the mean-field result very close to Monte Carlo results for β > 1.6. It also makes the mean-field result identical, within a narrow margin, to ressumed strong coupling results in the interval 1.6 < β < 2.4, thus showing the absence of a phase transition.For both groups studied, we find that the asymptotic series of mean-field perturbation theory give much better approximations than do ordinary weak coupling series.  相似文献

A quantum Ising-like spin-j model, characterized by arbitrary multipole-multipole interactions as well as external fields, is proposed and analyzed. A thorough discussion of the algebraic properties of the dynamical variables (which belong to SU(2j+1)) is performed, whereby by the application of an improved version of the mean-field theory (which has the usual mean-field theory as its zeroeth order approximation) an explicit expression for the free energy is derived.  相似文献

The Jordan-Wigner transformation is applied to study the ground state properties and dimerization transition in the J1-J2 XXZ chain. We consider different solutions of the mean-field approximation for the transformed Hamiltonian. Ground state energy and the static structure factor are compared with complementary exact diagonalization and good agreement is found near the limit of the Majumdar-Ghosh model. Furthermore, the ground state phase diagram is discussed within the mean-field theory. In particular, we show that an incommensurate ground state is absent for large J2 in a fully self-consistent mean-field analysis.  相似文献

Summary A quantum spin-1 Ising-like model with dipolar as well as quadrupolar interactions and with an external field coupled to both dipole and quadrupole components is analysed in terms of an improved version of the mean-field theory (which has the usual mean-field theory as its zeroth order). The critical-surface equations in the complete phase space (temperature and field components) are explicitly derived by a Landau expansion at the lower order of the theory. Moreover, the full phase diagram is numerically described at the second order. The expressions for the free energy and the magnetization are given in detail.

The zero temperature phase diagram of a one-dimensional ferromagnet with cubic single ion anisotropy in an external magnetic field is studied. The mean-field approximation and the density-matrix renormalization group method are applied. Two phases at finite magnetic fields are identified: a canted phase with spontaneously broken symmetry and a phase with magnetization along the magnetic field. Both methods predict that the canted phase exists even for the single-ion anisotropy strong enough to destroy the magnetic order at zero magnetic field. In contrast to the mean-field theory, the density-matrix renormalization group predicts a reentrant behavior for the model. By means of the dynamical vertex approximation (DΓA) we include spatial correlations on all length scales beyond the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) for the half-filled Hubbard model in three dimensions. The most relevant changes due to nonlocal fluctuations are (i) a deviation from the mean-field critical behavior with the same critical exponents as for the three dimensional Heisenberg (anti)ferromagnet and (ii) a sizable reduction of the Néel temperature (T(N)) by ~30% for the onset of antiferromagnetic order. Finally, we give a quantitative estimate of the deviation of the spectra between DΓA and DMFT in different regions of the phase diagram.  相似文献

The phase diagram in the (τ-δ) plane, where τ is the reduced temperature and δ is a parameter characterizing the anisotropy of the fourth vertex of the effective Hamiltonian, is constructed on the basis of the standard mean-field approximation of the theory of weak crystallization. It is shown that the region of the gyroid phase dominates the phase diagram for intermediate values of the parameters τ and δ. An expression is obtained for the free energy of the gyroid phase. The phase diagram for a lattice-gas model of physical adsorption on a homogeneous substrate has been calculated in a mean-field approximation. The first-order phase transitions corresponding to the addition of successive layers terminate in individual critical points as the temperature increases. The critical temperatures of successive layers increase, monotonically with layer number, from the critical temperature of the two-dimensional lattice gas to that of the bulk three-dimensional lattice gas. This last feature is probably an artifact of the mean-field approximation.  相似文献

The Ising model on a compressible triangular lattice with axial next-nearestneighbor interactions is studied in the mean-field approximation. A representative phase diagram is generated, which exhibits first- and second-order phase transitions to commensurate modulated phases. The crossover point from first to second order transitions is calculated. The stability of the modulated phases is calculated analytically in a low-temperature approximation. These results are very different from the ANNNI model, which exhibits a second-order transition to a continuum of commensurate and incommensurate phases.  相似文献

The phase diagram of a ferroelectric thin film is studied by using the usual mean-field approximation. The crossover features, from the ferroelectric-dominant phase diagram to the paraelectric-dominant phase diagram, for the physical parameters of the thin film are discussed. Using a mean-field theory based upon Hartree-Fock approximation, we theoretically investigate the competition between the metallic conductivity, spin order and charge order phases in a two-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model on anisotropic triangular lattice. Bond order, double occupancy, spin and charge structure factor are calculated, and the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model is presented. It is found that the interplay of strong interaction and geometric frustration leads to exotic phases, the charge fluctuation is enhanced and three kinds of charge orders appear with the introduction of the nearest-neighbor interaction. Moreover, for different frustrations, it is also found that the antiferromagnetic insulating phase and nonmagnetic insulating phase are rapidly suppressed, and eventually disappeared as the ratio between the nearest-neighbor interaction and on-site interaction increases. This indicates that spin order is also sensitive to the nearest-neighbor interaction. Finally, the single-site entanglement is calculated and it is found that a clear discontinuous of the single-site entanglement appears at the critical points of the phase transition.  相似文献
