By means of the polymer statistical thrury. the A f -A g type nonlinear free radical polymerization is investigated to give the number of effective elastic chains, the number of effective elastic mers and the average length for the elastic chains. The corresponding quantities for the dangling chains, the number of effective cross-linkage and the mod-ulus are also obtained. Furthrrmore, the nurnber- and weight-fractions of elastic chains are deduced. Project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No. 29673018), the Ph. Evaluation of defects in the polymer network is important to characterize the polymer materials, in which there always exist the defects that affect the physical and chemical properties of polymer network. Taking Af- Ag type nonlinear free radical polymerization as an example, one type of defects called dangling loops in the gel network is investigated by means of the statistical theory of polymeric reactions. The number of dangling loops and the probability of its formation are obtained by analyzing the polymer network structure in detail.  相似文献

A block copolymer of cyclohexene oxide (CHO) and styrene (St) was prepared by using bifunctional visible light photoinitiator dibenzoyldiethylgermane (DBDEG) via a two‐step procedure. The bifunctionality of the photoinitiator pertains to the sequential photodecomposition of DBDEG through acyl germane bonds. In the first step, photoinitiated free radical promoted cationic polymerization of CHO using DBDEG in the presence of diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (Ph2I+PF) was carried out to yield polymers with photoactive monobenzoyl germane end groups. These poly(cyclohexene oxide) (PCHO) prepolymers were used to induce photoinitiated free radical polymerization of styrene (St) resulting in the formation of poly(cyclohexene oxide‐block‐styrene) (P(CHO‐b‐St)). Successful blocking has been confirmed by a strong change in the molecular weight of the prepolymer and the block copolymer as well as NMR, IR, and DSC spectral measurements. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A stable nitroxyl radical functionalized with an initiating group for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), 4‐(2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyloxy)‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy (Br‐TEMPO), was synthesized by the reaction of 4‐hydroxyl‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy with 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl bromide. Stable free radical polymerization of styrene was then carried out using a conventional thermal initiator, dibenzoyl peroxide, along with Br‐TEMPO. The obtained polystyrene had an active bromine atom for ATRP at the ω‐end of the chain and was used as the macroinitiator for ATRP of methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate to prepare block copolymers. The molecular weights of the resulting block copolymers at different monomer conversions shifted to higher molecular weights and increased with monomer conversion. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Benzoin, a popular photoinitiator for free radical polymerization of vinyl monomers, was improved by introduction of two methyl thioether substituents. This new benzoin derivative showed an about 50 times higher light absorption in the near‐UV spectral region and performed better than the unsubstituted benzoin in polymerization experiments in bulk solutions or films of acrylate monomers when low initiator concentrations are used. Laser flash photolysis, low temperature luminescence experiments and photoproduct studies by mass spectrometry suggest that a slow α‐cleavage mechanism (kα = 2.2 × 105 s?1) from the electronic triplet state with a quantum yield of 0.1 is the primary photoreaction to generate the initiating free radicals. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acrylates have gained importance because of their ease of conversion to high‐molecular‐weight polymers and their broad industrial use. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is a well‐known monomer for free radical polymerization, but its α‐methyl substituent restricts the chemical modification of the monomer and therefore the properties of the resulting polymer. The presence of a heteroatom in the methyl group is known to increase the polymerizability of MMA. Methyl α‐hydroxymethylacrylate (MHMA), methyl α‐methoxymethylacrylate (MC1MA), methyl α‐acetoxymethylacrylate (MAcMA) show even better conversions to high‐molecular‐weight polymers than MMA. In contrast, the polymerization rate is known to decrease as the methyl group is replaced by ethyl in ethyl α‐hydroxymethylacrylate (EHMA) and t‐butyl in t‐butyl α‐hydroxymethylacrylate (TBHMA). In this study, quantum mechanical tools (B3LYP/6‐31G*) have been used in order to understand the mechanistic behavior of the free radical polymerization reactions of acrylates. The polymerization rates of MMA, MHMA, MC1MA, MAcMA, EHMA, TBHMA, MC1AN (α‐methoxymethyl acrylonitrile), and MC1AA (α‐methoxymethyl acrylic acid) have been evaluated and rationalized. Simple monomers such as allyl alcohol (AA) and allyl chloride (AC) have also been modeled for comparative purposes. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2005  相似文献

A stable nitroxyl radical functionalized with two initiating groups for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), 4-(2,2-bis-(methyl 2-bromo isobutyrate)-propionyloxy)-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (Br2-TEMPO), was synthesized by reacting 4-hydroxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy with 2,2-bis-(methyl 2-bromo isobutyrate) propanoic acid. Stable free radical polymerization of styrene was then carried out using a conventional thermal initiator, dibenzoyl peroxide, along with Br2-TEMPO. The obtained polystyrene had two active bromine atoms for ATRP at the ω-end of the chain and was further used as the macroinitiator for ATRP of methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate to prepare AB2-type miktoarm star-shaped copolymers. The molecular weights of the resulting miktoarm star-shaped copolymers at different monomer conversions shifted to higher molecular weights without any trace of the macroinitiator, and increased with monomer conversion.  相似文献

The exit or desorption of free radicals from latex particles is an important kinetic process in an emulsion polymerization. This article unites a successful theory of radical absorption (i.e., initiator efficiency), based on propagation in the aqueous phase being the rate determining step for entry of charged free radicals, with a detailed model of radical desorption. The result is a kinetic scheme applicable to true “zero-one” systems (i.e., where entry of a radical into a latex particle already containing a radical results in instantaneous termination), which is still, with a number of generally applicable assumptions, relatively simple. Indeed, in many physically reasonable limits, the kinetic representation reduces to a single rate equation. Specific experimental techniques of particular significance and methods of analysis of kinetic data are detailed and discussed. A methodology for both assessing the applicability of the model and its more probable limits, via use of known rate coefficients and theoretical predictions, is outlined and then applied to the representative monomers, styrene and methyl methacrylate. A detailed application of the theory and illustration of the methodology of model discrimination via experiment is contained in the second article of this series. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Density functional theory calculations are used to determine the kinetics and reactivity indices of the first propagation steps of the polyethylene and poly(vinyl chloride) polymerization. Transition state theory is applied to evaluate the rate coefficient from the microscopically determined energies and partition functions. A comparison with the experimental Arrhenius plots validates the level of theory. The ability of reactivity indices to predict certain aspects of the studied propagation reactions is tested. Global softnesses of the reactants give an indication of the relative energy barriers of subsequent monomer additions. The correlation between energy and hardness profiles along the reaction path confirm the principle of maximum hardness. Local indices predict the regioselectivity of the attack of the growing radical to vinyl chloride. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2005  相似文献

The effect and the participation of the furfuryl ring, in particular the hydrogen at position C-5 in the free radical polymerization are analyzed following the polymerization of furfuryl acrylate (FA) and furfuryl methacrylate (FM) initiated by AIBN under photochemical activation. The results obtained indicate that the polymerization of FA deviates from the classical free radical kinetic scheme, giving rise to crosslinked polymers even at a degree of conversion lower than 7%. This behavior is well explained taking into consideration the participation of the furfuryl ring which acts as a degradative transfer agent. This was demonstrated by the kinetic analysis of the free radical polymerization of MMA initiated by the thermal decomposition of AIBN in the presence of different concentrations of furfuryl acetate. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Curing kinetics of unsaturated polyester resin system exhibiting apparent induction periods was investigated by modeling free radical initiation and propagation processes. The isothermal curing induction time as well as the maximum-rate time provided the same activation energy in the Arrhenius relation, and therefore, the isothermal curing master curve was constructed by using the reduced time method. Two model elementary rate equations for radical and monomer were proposed to describe the free radical polymerization of unsaturated polyester resin systems. The power law was adopted to express the conversion dependence function of the initiation efficiency and the monomer reaction rate. Demonstrating the capability of the developed model, the agreement between experimental and predicted data was excellent in both isothermal and dynamic-heating conditions, even with the same model parameters in different thermal conditions. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. An asymmetric difunctional initiator 2‐phenyl‐2‐[(2,2,6,6 tetramethylpiperidino)oxy] ethyl 2‐bromo propanoate ( 1 ) was used for the synthesis of ABC‐type methyl methacrylate (MMA)‐tert‐butylacrylate (tBA)‐styrene (St) triblock copolymers via a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and stable free‐radical polymerization (SFRP). The ATRP‐ATRP‐SFRP or SFRP‐ATRP‐ATRP route led to ABC‐type triblock copolymers with controlled molecular weight and moderate polydispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.35). The block copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR. The retaining chain‐end functionality and the applying halide exchange afforded high blocking efficiency as well as maintained control over entire routes. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. α-Methoxypolyethylene oxide methacrylate was polymerized by copper(I)-mediated living radical polymerization in aqueous solution to give polymers with controlled number-average molecular masses and narrow polydispersities. When equimolar quantities of initiator with respect to copper(I) bromide were used, the reaction was extremely fast with quantitative conversion achieved in less than 5 min at ambient temperature. However, the molecular weight distribution was broad, and control over the number-average molecular weight (Mn) growth was extremely poor; this is ascribed to an increase in termination because of the increased rate as a result of the coordination of water at the copper center. The complex formed between copper(I) bromide and N-(n-propyl)-2-pyridylmethanimine, bis[N-(n-propyl)-2-pyridylmethanimine]copper(I), was demonstrated to be stable in aqueous solution by 1H NMR over 10 h at 25 °C. However, on increasing the temperature to 50 °C, decomposition occurred rapidly. Thus, polymerization temperatures were maintained at ambient temperature. When longer alkyl chains were utilized in the ligand, that is, pentyl and octyl, the complex acted as a surfactant leading to heterogeneous solutions. When the catalyst concentration was reduced by two orders of magnitude, the rate of polymerization was reduced with 100% conversion achieved after 60 min with the Mn of the final product being higher than that predicted and the polydispersity equal to 1.43. Copper(II) was added as an inhibitor to circumvent these problems. When 10% of Cu(I) was replaced by Cu(II) {[Cu(I)] + [Cu(II)]/[I] = 1/100}, the mass distribution showed a bimodal distribution, and the rate of polymerization decreased significantly. With a catalyst composition [Cu(I)]/[Cu(II)] = 0.5/0.5 {[Cu(I)] + [Cu(II)]}/[I] = 1/100, polymerization proceeded slowly with 80% conversion reached after 22 h. Thus, the concentration of Cu(I) was further reduced with [Cu(I)]/[Cu(II)] = 10/90, {[Cu(I)] + [Cu(II)]}/[I] = 1/100. The system then contained [Initiator]/[Cu(I)] = 1000/1 and [I]/[Cu(II)] = 1000/9. Under these conditions, the reaction reached 50% after 5 h with the polymer having both an Mn close to the theoretical value and a narrow polydispersity of PDi = 1.15. Optimum results were obtained by increasing the amount of catalyst. When a ratio of [Cu(I)]/[Cu(II)] = 10/90 with a ratio of [Cu]/[I] = 1/1, a conversion of 100% was achieved after less than 20 h, leading to a product having Mn = 8500 and PDi = 1.15. Decreasing the amount of Cu(II) relative to Cu(I) to [Cu(I)]/[Cu(II)] = 0.5/0.5 (maintaining the overall amount of copper) led to 100% conversion after 75 min: Mn = 9500, PDi = 1.10. Block copolymers have been demonstrated by sequential monomer addition with excellent control over Mn and PDi. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 39: 1696–1707, 2001  相似文献

PDMS-based macrothiuram disulfides of different molecular weights capable of being used as macro-thermal iniferters towards deriving PDMS-containing triblock copolymers were synthesized and characterized. The synthesis of ω-(secondary amine)-terminated PDMS were accomplished by the hydrosilylation reaction of silyl hydride terminated PDMS with allyl-N-methylamine. Macroamines were eventually transformed to macroiniferters by the thiocarbamylation reaction and oxidative coupling. Kinetics of polymerization studied in the case of MMA and styrene in bulk, and as in toluene solution in case of MMA, revealed that the macroiniferters are as efficient as their microanalogues from the point of view of their initiating and chain-terminating properties. The different kinetic parameters were determined and discussed. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Several techniques have been used to probe polymer end groups. The nitroxide radical trapping technique has been used (i) to show that initiator-derived unsaturated end groups in polymethyl methacrylate can be minimized by using t-hexyl peroxypivalate as the initiator (ii) to predict the end and penultimate groups in acrylonitrile/ethyl vinyl ether copolymer produced by t-butoxyl initiation by analogy with the initiation mechanism (iii) to predict probable end groups in polyacrylonitrile and polystyrene produced by cyanoisopropyl initiation in the presence of adventitious oxygen. NMR techniques have been used to show that the end groups of functionalized oligomers, made from styrene and methacrylonitrile by the addition-fragmentation chain transfer technique with allylic sulphides, conform to the expected structures. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Cross-linked polymer microparticles (CPMs) with nanoscopic size were synthesized from the free radical polymerization of acrylate/diacrylate mixtures or of their methacrylate counterparts. The syntheses were carried out in solution, and the study of the influence of the solvent on the CPM characteristics led to the definition of reliable criteria for the obtention of true, soluble, individualized microgels and for avoiding macro-gelation, when starting from any desired monomer combination. Two main parameters could be pointed out: first, the probability of propagation of the growing radicals, q, (or the kinetic chain length λ = 1/1 − q) that must be kept below a certain threshold value in order to prevent macrogelation; q may be adjusted by playing on the monomer, initiator and transfer agent concentrations. The second essential criterion is the ability of the copolymer for auto-stabilization in the chosen solvent (that may be adjusted by the use of a suitable stabilizing co-monomer in case the quality of the solvent would not be sufficient), in order to avoid flocculation and interparticular reactions. By controlling these two parameters, the preparation of CPMs becomes possible over a wide range of concentration and composition.  相似文献
