We study Beck-like coloring of partially ordered sets (posets) with a least element 0. To any poset P with 0 we assign a graph (called a zero-divisor graph) whose vertices are labelled by the elements of P with two vertices x,y adjacent if 0 is the only element lying below x and y. We prove that for such graphs, the chromatic number and the clique number coincide. Also, we give a condition under which posets are not finitely colorable.  相似文献

An arc of a graph is an oriented edge and a 3-arc is a 4-tuple (v, u, x, y) of vertices such that both (v, u, x) and (u, x, y) are paths of length two. The 3-arc graph of a graph G is defined to have vertices the arcs of G such that two arcs uv, xy are adjacent if and only if (v, u, x, y) is a 3-arc of G. We prove that any connected 3-arc graph is hamiltonian, and all iterative 3-arc graphs of any connected graph of minimum degree at least three are hamiltonian. As a corollary we obtain that any vertex-transitive graph which is isomorphic to the 3-arc graph of a connected arc-transitive graph of degree at least three must be hamiltonian. This confirms the conjecture, for this family of vertex-transitive graphs, that all vertex-transitive graphs with finitely many exceptions are hamiltonian. We also prove that if a graph with at least four vertices is Hamilton-connected, then so are its iterative 3-arc graphs.  相似文献

For any vertex x of a graph G let Δ(x) denote the set of vertices adjacent to x. We seek to describe the connected graphs G which are regular of valence n and in which for all adjacent vertices x and y |Δ(x) ∩ Δ(y)| = n ? 1 ? s. It is known that the complete graphs are the graphs for which s = 0. For any s, any complete many-partite graph, each part containing s + 1 vertices, is such a graph. We show that these are the only such graphs for which the valence exceeds 2s2 ? s + 1. The graphs satisfying these conditions for s = 1 or 2 are characterized (up to the class of trivalent triangle-free graphs.)  相似文献

An alternative to Hanlon's buried-subgraph characterization of interval graphs that have unique (up to duality) agreeing interval orders is proveded. The alternative is based on a relation L between ordered pairs of points that are adjacent in the interval graph. The interpretation of abLxy is that if the interval for a precedes (follows) the interval for b in a representation of the interval graph, then the interval for x must precede (follow) the interval for y.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the independence, domination and chromatic numbers of 3-arc graphs and obtain sharp lower and upper bounds for them. The reachability r(D) of a directed graph D is the number of ordered pairs of distinct vertices (x,y) with a directed path from x to y. Consider a game associated with a graph G=(V,E) involving two players (maximizer and minimizer) who alternately select edges and orient them. The maximizer attempts to maximize the reachability, while the minimizer attempts to minimize the reachability, of the resulting digraph. If both players play optimally, then the reachability is fixed. Parameters that assign a value to each graph in this manner are called competitive parameters. We determine the competitive-reachability for special classes of graphs and discuss which graphs achieve the minimum and maximum possible values of competitive-reachability.  相似文献

For a pair of vertices x and y in a graph G, we denote by dG(x,y) the distance between x and y in G. We call x a boundary vertex of y if x and y belong to the same component and dG(y,v)?dG(y,x) for each neighbor v of x in G. A boundary vertex of some vertex is simply called a boundary vertex, and the set of boundary vertices in G is called the boundary of G, and is denoted by B(G).In this paper, we investigate graphs with a small boundary. Since a pair of farthest vertices are boundary vertices, |B(G)|?2 for every connected graph G of order at least two. We characterize the graphs with boundary of order at most three. We cannot give a characterization of graphs with exactly four boundary vertices, but we prove that such graphs have minimum degree at most six. Finally, we give an upper bound to the minimum degree of a connected graph G in terms of |B(G)|.  相似文献

A Roman dominating function of a graph G=(V,E) is a function f:V→{0,1,2} such that every vertex x with f(x)=0 is adjacent to at least one vertex y with f(y)=2. The weight of a Roman dominating function is defined to be f(V)=∑xVf(x), and the minimum weight of a Roman dominating function on a graph G is called the Roman domination number of G. In this paper we first answer an open question mentioned in [E.J. Cockayne, P.A. Dreyer Jr., S.M. Hedetniemi, S.T. Hedetniemi, Roman domination in graphs, Discrete Math. 278 (2004) 11-22] by showing that the Roman domination number of an interval graph can be computed in linear time. We then show that the Roman domination number of a cograph (and a graph with bounded cliquewidth) can be computed in linear time. As a by-product, we give a characterization of Roman cographs. It leads to a linear-time algorithm for recognizing Roman cographs. Finally, we show that there are polynomial-time algorithms for computing the Roman domination numbers of -free graphs and graphs with a d-octopus.  相似文献

The competition graph of a digraph D is a (simple undirected) graph which has the same vertex set as D and has an edge between x and y if and only if there exists a vertex v in D such that (x,v) and (y,v) are arcs of D. For any graph G, G together with sufficiently many isolated vertices is the competition graph of some acyclic digraph. The competition number k(G) of G is the smallest number of such isolated vertices. In general, it is hard to compute the competition number k(G) for a graph G and it has been one of the important research problems in the study of competition graphs to characterize a graph by its competition number. Recently, the relationship between the competition number and the number of holes of a graph has been studied. A hole of a graph is a cycle of length at least 4 as an induced subgraph. In this paper, we conjecture that the dimension of the hole space of a graph is not smaller than the competition number of the graph. We verify this conjecture for various kinds of graphs and show that our conjectured inequality is indeed an equality for connected triangle-free graphs.  相似文献

The 3-arc graph of a given graph G, X(G), is defined to have vertices the arcs of G. Two arcs uv,xy are adjacent in X(G) if and only if (v,u,x,y) is a 3-arc of G. This notion was introduced in recent studies of arc-transitive graphs. In this paper we study diameter and connectivity of 3-arc graphs. In particular, we obtain sharp bounds for the diameter and connectivity of X(G) in terms of the corresponding invariant of G.  相似文献

A graph G is called quasi-claw-free if for any two vertices x and y with distance two there exists a vertex uN(x)∩N(y) such that N[u]⊆N[x]∪N[y]. This concept is a natural extension of the classical claw-free graphs. In this paper, we present two sufficient conditions for vertex pancyclicity in quasi-claw-free graphs, namely, quasilocally connected and almost locally connected graphs. Our results include some well-known results on claw-free graphs as special cases. We also give an affirmative answer to a problem proposed by Ainouche.  相似文献

An orthogonal ray graph is an intersection graph of horizontal and vertical rays (half-lines) in the xy-plane. An orthogonal ray graph is a 2-directional orthogonal ray graph if all the horizontal rays extend in the positive x-direction and all the vertical rays extend in the positive y-direction. We first show that the class of orthogonal ray graphs is a proper subset of the class of unit grid intersection graphs. We next provide several characterizations of 2-directional orthogonal ray graphs. Our first characterization is based on forbidden submatrices. A characterization in terms of a vertex ordering follows immediately. Next, we show that 2-directional orthogonal ray graphs are exactly those bipartite graphs whose complements are circular arc graphs. This characterization implies polynomial-time recognition and isomorphism algorithms for 2-directional orthogonal ray graphs. It also leads to a characterization of 2-directional orthogonal ray graphs by a list of forbidden induced subgraphs. We also show a characterization of 2-directional orthogonal ray trees, which implies a linear-time algorithm to recognize such trees. Our results settle an open question of deciding whether a (0,1)-matrix can be permuted to avoid the submatrices .  相似文献

We study colorings of quasiordered sets (qosets) with a least element 0. To any qoset Q with 0 we assign a graph (called a zerodivisor graph) whose vertices are labelled by the elements of Q with two vertices x,y adjacent if the only elements lying below x and y are those lying below 0. The zero-divisor graph of a commutative ring R is the graph whose vertices consist of the nonzero zero-divisors of R such that distinct vertices x and y are adjacent if and only if xy=0. In this paper, a decomposition theorem is provided to describe weakly central-vertex complete graphs of radius 1. This characterization is then applied to the class of zero-divisor graphs of commutative rings. For finite commutative rings whose zero-divisor graphs are not isomorphic to that of Z4[X]/(X2), it is shown that weak central-vertex completeness is equivalent to the annihilator condition. Furthermore, a schema for describing zero-divisor graphs of radius 1 is provided.  相似文献

A (finite or infinite) graph G is constructible if there exists a well‐ordering ≤ of its vertices such that for every vertex x which is not the smallest element, there is a vertex y < x which is adjacent to x and to every neighbor z of x with z < x. Particular constructible graphs are Helly graphs and connected bridged graphs. In this paper we study a new class of constructible graphs, the class of locally Helly graphs. A graph G is locally Helly if, for every pair (x,y) of vertices of G whose distance is d2, there exists a vertex whose distance to x is d ? 1 and which is adjacent to y and to all neighbors of y whose distance to x is at most d. Helly graphs are locally Helly, and the converse holds for finite graphs. Among different properties we prove that a locally Helly graph is strongly dismantable, hence cop‐win, if and only if it contains no isometric rays. We show that a locally Helly graph G is finitely Helly, that is, every finite family of pairwise non‐disjoint balls of G has a non‐empty intersection. We give a sufficient condition by forbidden subgraphs so that the three concepts of Helly graphs, of locally Helly graphs and of finitely Helly graphs are equivalent. Finally, generalizing different results, in particular those of Bandelt and Chepoi 1 about Helly graphs and bridged graphs, we prove that the Helly number h(G) of the geodesic convexity in a constructible graph G is equal to its clique number ω(G), provided that ω(G) is finite. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this note, we prove a structural theorem for planar graphs, namely that every planar graph has one of four possible configurations: (1) a vertex of degree 1, (2) intersecting triangles, (3) an edge xy with d(x)+d(y)≤9, (4) a 2-alternating cycle. Applying this theorem, new moderate results on edge choosability, total choosability, edge-partitions and linear arboricity of planar graphs are obtained.  相似文献

A graph G is called a supercompact graph if G is the intersection graph of some family ?? of subsets of a set X such that ?? satisfies the Helly property and for any xy in X, there exists S ∈ ?? with xS, y ? S. Various characterizations of supercompact graphs are given. It is shown that every clique-critical graph is supercompact. Furthermore, for any finite graph, H, there is at most a finite number of different supercompact graphs G such that H is the clique-graph of G.  相似文献
