igh performance crystal/crystal blends of poly (phenylene sulfide) and poly (ether ether ketone) (PPS/PEEK) have ho prepared by dry mixing and melhng at different temperatures. The crystallization and melting behavior of PEEK component in quenched blends have ho investigated by differential scanningcalorimetry (DSC). As melt temperature (Tmelt) increases, the crystalline andmelting behavior of PPS and PEEK is different due to the difference of thermalproperty of PPS and PEEK. The temperature of melhng (Tm) and crystallization (Tc) and crystallinity (Xc) of PEEK component in blends increase as the content of PPS increases up to 50%. However. this action of PPS is suppresed with increasing of Tmelt.  相似文献

We have used an optical interference technique to measure the dilation of polystyrene films in the presence of carbon dioxide or helium at pressures up to 20 atm. Dilation isotherms (plots of dilation versus gas pressure at constant temperature) were obtained for three samples of polystyrene which had widely differing molecular weights. The dilation isotherms have the same general shape as sorption isotherms, which means that all of the sorbed gas molecules contribute to volume dilation and non can be thought of as occupying molecular-sized voids in the polymer. Using sorption results from the literature we show that the partial molar volume of CO2 at 35°C is about 39 cm3 mol?1 and appears to be independent of polystyrene molecular weight. For a polystyrene sample with Mn = 3600, the partial molar volume of sorbed CO2 increases to 44 and 50 cm3 mol?1 at 45 and 55°C, respectively. The sorption of CO2 in polystyrene is shown to depress the glass transition temperature of the mixture, consistent with theoretical predictions. The shape of the dilation and sorption isotherms are consistent with the depression of the glass transition temperature.  相似文献

Hydrostatic pressure usually increases the glass transition temperature Tg of a polymer glass by decreasing its free volume; if the pressurizing environment is soluble in the polymer, however, one might expect an initial decrease in Tg with pressure as the polymer is plasticized by the environment. Just such a minimum in the Tg of polystyrene (PS) is observed as the pressure of CO2 gas is increased over the range 0.1–105 MPa from both ultrasonic (1 MHz) measurements of Young's modulus E and static measurements of the creep compliance J. A time-temperature-pressure superposition law is obeyed by PS which allows a master curve for the compliance to be constructed and shift factors to be determined. A master curve for E is then obtained by using the Boltzmann superposition principle. The compliance J reaches a maximum, and E and Tg reach minima, at a CO2 pressure of ca. 20 MPa at both 34 and 45°C, which are above the critical temperature (31°C) of CO2. At the minimum, Tg is 41 at 45°C and 36 at 34°C, the larger depression at 34°C evidently corresponding to the higher solubility of CO2 at the lower temperature. The plasticization effect due to CO2 can be isolated by subtracting the effect of hydrostatic pressure alone from the experimental data. The results leave no doubt that at high pressures CO2 gas is a severe plasticizer for polystyrene.  相似文献

High-pressure sorption (up to 50 atm) for CO2, N2, and Ar in poly(vinyl benzoate) (PVB) was studied at temperatures from 25 to 70°C by a gravimetric method utilizing an electromicrobalance. The results are described by Henry's law above the glass transition temperature Tg for all gases. The dual-mode sorption model, Henry's law plus a Langmuir isotherm, applies to the sorption isotherms of N2 and Ar in the glassy state, and the dual-mode parameters are given. For CO2, a new type of sorption isotherm is observed below Tg. The isotherm is concave to the pressure axis in the low-pressure region and turns into a straight line with increasing CO2 pressure which can be extrapolated back to the coordinate origin. The linear part of the isotherm is characteristic of the rubbery state, while the nonlinear part stems from glassystate behavior. The “glass transition solubility” of CO2, at which PVB film changes from the glassy to the rubbery state, decrease as the temperature increases. The disappearance of microvoids, that is, the decrease of the Langmuir capacity, may be due to a large plasticizing effect of sorbed CO2. The difference between the N2 and Ar isotherms and the CO2 isotherm is discussed from this standpoint.  相似文献

The effect of dissolved carbon dioxide on the glass transition temperature of a polymer, PMMA, has been investigated using molecular probe chromatography. The probe solute was iso-octane, and the specific retention volumes of this solute in pure PMMA and mixtures of PMMA with CO2 were measured over a temperature range of 0 to 180°C and CO2 pressures from 1 to 75 atm. The amount of CO2 dissolved in the polymer was calculated from a model fit to previously published solubility data determined chromatographically. Classical van't Hoff-type plots were used to determine the glass transition temperature of CO2-impregnated PMMA from low pressure up to 46 atm of CO2. Solvent-induced plasticization was observed with the glass transition temperature decreasing by about 40°C. At some pressures, glass transitions at low temperatures could not be determined from the van't Hoff plots because of the proximity of the polymer glass transition temperature to the gas–liquid transition temperature for CO2. For these pressures, a new method was developed to determine the glass transition composition. The glass transition pressure was then calculated from the measured composition and temperature using an isotherm model. In every case, the glass transition temperature decreased linearly with increasing concentration of CO2 in the polymer. However, at higher compositions, the glass transition pressure decreased with increasing composition and decreasing temperature. The observed retention volume of iso-octane with PMMA in a glassy state was correlated with an adsorption model developed from a theory for liquid–solid chromatography derived by Martire. This model accurately described the observed decrease in retention of iso-octane by adsorption on the surface of glassy PMMA with increasing concentration of CO2 dissolved in the polymer. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The apparent solubility (S), concentration-average diffusivity (D), and permeability (P), for C0_2, CH_4 and N_2 through PPO and aryl-brominated PPO at 35℃for pressure ranging from 1 to 26 atm are reported. It is found that P, D, and S of the membranes to all the three gases vary with the extent of bromination. S increases with the increase of the percent of bromine in each case, but D to CO_2 increases remarkably only at higher degree of brominafion, and therefore, P to CO_2 is increased by more than 100% over a wide range ofpressure in the case. The solubility data are well described by the dual mode sorption model. It is found that the gas molecules sorbed by the Langmuir mode are relatively more immobilized and the contribution of the nonequilibrinm character of the polymer to gas permeation increases obviously for CO_2 and is hardly changed for CH_4 with increasing bromine content. These observations are interpreted in terms of changes in specific free volume (SFV)and the cohesive energy density (CED) of the polymers.  相似文献

Positronium annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) has been used to study the microstructural properties of amine-cured epoxy polymers. We have determined the free-volume “hole” sizes in these polymers by comparing the observed ortho-positronium lifetimes with the known lifetime–free volume correlation for low-molecular-weight systems. The free volumes for four epoxies with different crosslink densities are found to vary significantly over the temperature range between ?78° and 250°C. The free-volume holes for these polymers are found to range from 0.025 to 0.220 nm3. Two important transition temperatures were found: one corresponds to the glass transition temperature Tg determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the other occurs about 80–130°C below Tg. The sub-Tg transition temperature is interpreted tentatively as being where hole size reaches dimensions adequate for positronium trapping or else the onset temperature for local mode or side-chain motions. These two transition temperatures plus two additional onset temperatures are found to be correlated with crosslink densities calculated from stoichiometry.  相似文献

A new technique is described for dilatometry under high pressure. The technique is based on optical interferometry and is analogous to measuring the thickness of thin, nonabsorbing films and coatings. The procedure is demonstrated for the well-characterized system of n-pentane sorption by polyisobutylene, and then results for the dilation of polycarbonate by the sorption of carbon dioxide are presented. The dilation of polycarbonate by CO2 is nearly linear with concentration; the partial molar volume of CO2 decreases slightly with increasing pressure. This result indicates that all sorbed CO2 molecules contribute equally to the dilation of the polymer matrix and that none reside in microvoids or in preexisting free-volume elements which do not contribute to volume expansion of the polymer.  相似文献

Epoxy resin nanocomposites containing organophilic montmorillonite (oM) and polyurethane were prepared by adding oM to interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of epoxy resin and polyurethane (EP/PU). The dispersion degree of oM in EP/PU matrix was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) showed that strong interactions existed between oM and EP/PU matrix, and oM had some effect on hydrogen bonding of these EP/PU IPNs nanocomposites. Positron annihilation spectroscopy (PALS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements were used to investigate the effect of oM and PU contents on free volume and glass transition temperature (Tg) of these nanocomposites. The PALS and DSC results clearly showed that the presence of oM led to a decrease in the total fractional free volume, which was consistent with increasing Tg upon addition of oM, ascribed to increasing hydrogen bonding in interfacial regions of oM and EP/PU matrix and enhancing the miscibility between EP phase and PU phase. In addition, with increasing PU content, the total fractional free volume increased, corresponding to decreasing Tg.  相似文献

A stepwise temperature‐ and pressure‐scanning thermal analysis method was developed to measure glass‐transition temperature Tg in the two‐phase polymer–gas systems as a function of gas pressure p, and was used to confirm recent theoretical predictions that certain polymer–gas systems exhibit retrograde vitrification, that is, they undergo rubber‐to‐glass transition on heating. A complete Tgp profile delineating the glass–rubber phase envelope was established for the PMMA‐CO2 system. The retrograde vitrification behavior observed, where at certain gas pressures the polymer exists in the rubbery state at low and high temperatures and in the glassy state at intermediate temperatures, was similar to that reported previously based on the creep‐compliance measurements. The existence of the rubbery state at low temperatures was used to generate foams by saturating the polymer with CO2 at 34 atm and at temperatures in the range −0.2 to 24 °C followed by foaming at temperatures in the range 24 to 90 °C. Foams with very fine cell structure never reported before could be prepared by this technique. For example, PMMA foams with average cell size of 0.35 μm and cell density of 4.4 × 1013 cells/g were prepared by processing the low temperature rubbery phase. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Pressure–volume–temperature (PVT) measurements of α-cellulose with different water contents, were performed at temperatures from 25 to 180 °C and pressures from 19.6 to 196 MPa. PVT measurements allowed observation of the combined effects of pressure and temperature on the specific volume during cellulose thermo-compression. All isobars showed a decrease in cellulose specific volume with temperature. This densification is associated with a transition process of the cellulose, occurring at a temperature defined by the inflection point T t of the isobar curve. T t decreases from 110 to 40 °C with pressure and is lower as moisture content increases. For isobars obtained at high pressures and high moisture contents, after attaining a minimum, an increase in volume is observed with temperature that may be related to free water evaporation. PVT α-cellulose experimental data was compared with predicted values from a regression analysis of the Tait equations of state, usually applied to synthetic polymers. Good correlations were observed at low temperatures and low pressures. The densification observed from the PVT experimental data, at a temperature that decreases with pressure, could result from a sintering phenomenon, but more research is needed to actually understand the cohesion mechanism under these conditions.  相似文献

Free‐volume properties, size and distribution, in amorphous polystyrene exposed to CO2 gases have been measured as a function of pressure to 800 psi (5.5 MPa), of time, and of temperature using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. The free volume increases significantly and its distribution broadens as a function of pressure. The free volume relaxes as a function of time with a characteristic time of 15 h, and 5.7 h for 400, and 800 psi, respectively, after depressurizing under vacuum. A portion of free volume created by CO2 exposure remains permanently in the polymer after CO2 exposure. The glass transition temperature decreases significantly as a function of CO2 pressure from the free‐volume data and is compared with the differential scanning calorimeter results. The observed free‐volume variations as a function of pressure, time, and temperature are discussed in terms of hole expansion, creation, free‐volume relaxation, plasticization, and hole filling in amorphous polymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Water equilibrium in glassy polystyrene (Tg = 343 K) is described. Water content increases with increasing temperature and increasing water vapour pressure. The heats and entropies of mixing show that the polymer contains both free water and water sorbed on the chains, in small but approximately equal amounts; no noticeable clustering takes place.  相似文献

The effects of pressure and temperature on the phase behavior of aqueous solutions of (hydroxypropyl)cellulose (HPC) were in¶vestigated at low and high concentrations. In dilute solutions, the transition temperature (T t) as measured by apparent light scattering increased with an increase in pressure at lower pressures, but decreased with increasing pressure above 100?MPa. At lower temperatures, the transition pressure (P t) increased slightly with increasing temperature, but decreased with at temperatures above 10–15?°C. Both T t and P t showed a moderate polymer-concentration dependence and they also showed strong concentration dependence on salt; T t and P t decreased with increasing concentrations of KCl and K2SO4, whereas the addition of KI or KSCN increased T t and P t. The apparent absorbance of concentrated solutions (62.5%) of HPC, in a cholesteric (chiral nematic) mesophase, was also measured. The spectrum shifted to a longer wavelength under high pressure. These results could be explained by assuming that the helicoidal pitch was increased under elevated pressure, probably due to a decrease in the angle between the two semiflexible and twisted HPC molecules in adjacent planes under high pressure.  相似文献

The synthesis, thermal, and gas transport properties of poly(hexafluoroisopropylidene isophthalamide), HFA/ISO homopolymer, and HFA/TERT‐co‐HFA/ISO copolyamides with different poly(hexafluoroisopropilydene‐5‐t‐butylisophthalamide), HFA/TERT, ratios are reported. The results indicate that the glass transition temperatures of the copolyamides increase as the concentration of HFA/TERT in the polyamide increases. The gas permeability coefficients in the polyamides and copolyamides are independent of pressure or decrease slightly particularly with CO2, N2, and CH4. It was seen that HFA/TERT is 2–6 times more permeable than HFA/ISO, depending on the gas being considered. This was assigned to the presence of the bulky lateral substituent, t‐butyl group in HFA/TERT and HFA/TERT‐co‐HFA/ISO copolyamides. This substituent increases fractional free‐volume, as expected. Therefore, the gas permeability and diffusion coefficients generally increase with increasing fractional free‐volume. The experimental results for the gas permeability and permselectivity for the copolyamides was well represented by a logarithmic mixing rule of the homopolyamides permeability coefficients and their volume fraction. The selectivity of gas pairs, such as O2/N2, CO2/CH4, and N2/CH4 decreased slightly with the addition of HFA/TERT. The temperature dependence of permeability for homopolyamides and copolyamides can be described by an Arrhenius type equation. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Experimental data on gas sorption and polymer swelling in glassy polymer—gas systems at elevated pressures are presented for CO2 with polycarbonate, poly(methyl methacrylate), and polystyrene over a range of temperatures from 33 to 65°C and pressures up to 100 atm. The swelling and sorption behavior were found to depend on the occurrence of a glass transition for the polymer induced by the sorption of CO2. Two distinct types of swelling and sorption isotherms were measured. One isotherm is characterized by swelling and sorption that reach limiting values at elevated pressures. The other isotherm is characterized by swelling and sorption that continue to increase with pressure and a pressure effect on swelling that is somewhat greater than the effect of pressure on sorption. Glass transition pressures estimated from the experimental results for polystyrene with CO2 are used to obtain the relationship between CO2 solubility and the glass transition temperature for the polymer. This relationship is in very good agreement with a theoretical corresponding-states correlation for glass transition temperatures of polystyrene-liquid diluent mixtures.  相似文献

The frequency, temperature, and hydrostatic pressure dependences of the dielectric properties, molecular relaxations, and phase transitions in PVDF and a copolymer with a 30 mol% trifluoroethylene were investigated. The β-relaxation peak temperature Tβ and the melting temperature Tm of both polymers, and the ferroelectric transition temperature Tc of the copolymer, are strong increasing functions of pressure. The magnitudes of the pressure derivatives of Tβ, Tc, and Tm increase in the order of the “transition” temperatures, i.e., Tβ(P) < Tc(P) < Tm(P). These results can be qualitatively understood in terms of the nature of the molecular motion and/or reorientation processes involved. The results on the copolymer suggest that pressure should induce a ferroelectric-paraelectric transition in PVDF below Tm, but such a transition was not observed over the limited pressure range of the present experiments. The relaxational dynamic (not static) nature of the melting process in these materials is indicated by the observed dependence of Tm on probe frequency. The frequency (or rate) and strong pressure dependences of Tm of PVDF provide a rational explanation for why it is possible to use this polymer as a piezoelectric shock-wave gauge to relatively high shock pressures and the accompanying high temperatures.  相似文献

Aromatic polyamides based on poly(m‐xylylene adipamide) (MXD‐based polyamides) and poly(hexamethylene isophthalamide) (HMD‐based polyamides) were examined. Insight into the excellent gas‐barrier properties was obtained by the characterization of the effect of water sorption on the thermal transitions, density, refractive index, free‐volume hole size, and oxygen‐transport properties. Reversing the carbonyl position with respect to the amide nitrogen substantially lowered the oxygen permeability of MXD‐based polyamides in comparison with that of HMD‐based polyamides by facilitating hydrogen‐bond formation. The resulting restriction of conformational changes and segmental motions reduced diffusivity. The primary effect of water sorption was a decrease in the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) attributed to plasticization by bound water. No evidence was found to support the idea that sorbed water filled holes of free volume. When the polymer was in the glassy state, the drop in Tg accounted for hydration‐dependent changes in the density, refractive index, and free‐volume hole size. The correlation of the oxygen solubility with Tg and density confirmed the concept of oxygen sorption as filling holes of excess free volume. In some cases, water sorption produced a glass‐to‐rubber transition. The onset of rubbery behavior was associated with a minimum in the oxygen permeability. The glass‐to‐rubber transition also facilitated the crystallization of MXD‐based polymers, which complicated the interpretation of oxygen‐transport behavior at higher relative humidity. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Positron annihilation lifetimes were measured for several polymers in the atmosphere of high pressure CO2 gas. At low CO2 pressured both 3 andI 3 decreased due to the Langmuir-type sorption, and at higher pressures their values recovered because the Henry-type sorption takes over. The amount of sorbed CO2 and dilation of the bulk volume were measured simultaneously, and the free volume fraction was determined at each CO2 pressure. The free volume fraction became smaller (for polyimide and polycarbonate) or slightly larger (for polyethylene) with the progress of sorption. However, the size of the o-Ps hole estimated from the 3 value increased regardless of the change of the free volume fraction. It appears that o-Ps is selectively looking at larger holes or expanding the holes in which it is accommodated. For polycarbonate, which remains to be glassy even at the largest CO2 sorption attained in the experiment, the o-Ps hole size became larger than that before sorption. This implies that, even if the polymer is glassy as bulk, the sorption site is strongly prone to molecular displacement by the pressure of the penetrating Ps. Cautious consideration is evoked about directly correlating the o-Ps lifetime and intensity with the free volume in general.  相似文献

The gas‐transport properties of poly[2,6‐toluene‐2,2‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxylphenyl)hexafluoropropane diimide] (6FDA‐2,6‐DAT) have been investigated. The sorption behavior of dense 6FDA‐2,6‐DAT membranes is well described by the dual‐mode sorption model and has certain relationships with the critical temperatures of the penetrants. The solubility coefficient decreases with an increase in either the pressure or temperature. The temperature dependence of the diffusivity coefficient increases with an increase in the penetrant size, as the order of the activation energy for the diffusion jump is CH4 > N2 > O2 > CO2. Also, the average diffusion coefficient increases with increasing pressure for all the gases tested. As a combined contribution from sorption and diffusion, permeability decreases with increases in the pressure and the kinetic diameter of the penetrant molecules. Even up to 32.7 atm, no plasticization phenomenon can be observed on flat dense 6FDA‐2,6‐DAT membranes from their permeability–pressure curves. However, just as for other gases, the absolute value of the heat of sorption of CO2 decreases with increasing pressure at a low‐pressure range, but the trend changes when the feed pressure is greater than 10 atm. This implies that CO2‐induced plasticization may occur and reduce the positive enthalpy required to create a site into which a penetrant can be sorbed. Therefore, a better diagnosis of the inherent threshold pressure for the plasticization of a glassy polymer membrane may involve examining the absolute value of the heat of sorption as a function of pressure and identifying the turning point at which the gradient of the absolute value of the heat of sorption against pressure turns from a negative value to a positive one. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
