The use of municipal solid waste (MSW) compost as a sorbent for tributyltin (TBT) in seawater was investigated. TBT‐contaminated seawater, both artificially prepared and that collected from Msida Creek yacht marina (Malta), was allowed to percolate through untreated and water‐washed columns of compost and then analysed for organotins using gas chromatography‐flame photometric detection. About 90% of dissolved TBT ranging in concentration from about 800 to 8000 ngSnl?1 was sorbed by treating 500 ml solutions with 100 g untreated compost. On the other hand, no detectable breakthrough of TBT was observed from compost that had previously been washed by water to remove soluble organic matter. Breakthrough of TBT from unwashed compost is thought to be due to formation of complexes between the soluble organic matter in compost and aquated TBT, which renders the organotin more hydrophilic. The use of washed MSW compost as sorbent for the purification of TBT‐contaminated waters generated in large quantity during hull‐cleaning activities in drydocks is suggested as a mitigatory measure against the impact of TBT on the coastal marine environment. An analytical gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) method using negative ion chemical ionization (NICI) has been investigated for the determination of trace tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPhT) compounds in sea water. TBT and TPhT were extracted from samples as chloride under the acidic condition of HCl. Doping of the GC system with a dilute HBr–methanolic solution resulted in direct detection of the chlorides of TBT, TPhT and tripentyltin (TPenT, internal standard). As the result of HBr doping, a sharp peak of the respective organotin bromides appeared: during GC analysis, halogen exchange from the chloride to the bromide occurred. NICI-MS was highly selective and sensitive for the detection of TBT, TPhT and TPenT bromides. In the selected ion monitoring mode of NICI-MS, the minimum detectable amounts defined as the signal equal to three times the standard deviation (3σ) of the baseline noise were 20 and 25 pg ml−1 for TBT and TPhT, respectively. These amounts are approximately 250–400 times better than those in electron impact mode. The combination of GC using an apolar capillary column doped with a dilute HBr–methanolic solution and NICI-MS made it possible to determine TBT and TPhT at less than the ng l−1 level in sea water.  相似文献

Among butyltin compounds, tributyltin (TBT), widely exploited in the past in antifouling paints for its biocidal properties, is long known as one of the most harmful sea contaminants. Among the ascertained and universal toxicity mechanisms, TBT targeting F1FO‐ATPase and thus impairing cell bioenergetics, is here reviewed. While TBT effects on F1FO‐ATPase have been investigated for decades, the possible impact of the derivatives dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT), produced by abiotic and/or biotic dealkylation of TBT and usually considered far less toxic, have been poorly explored up until now. Butyltin effects on F1FO‐ATPase and their underlying action mechanism seem to be tightly structure dependent. Butyltins are membrane‐active toxicants. Owing to its more pronounced lipophilicity TBT targets the transmembrane FO sector, blocks ionic translocation and causes a dose‐dependent loss of sensitivity to FO inhibitors such as oligomycin and N,N′‐dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. DBT strongly inhibits F1FO‐ATPase activity by competing with the Mg+2 cofactor in the F1 catalytic site but is ineffective on the enzyme sensitivity to FO inhibitors. MBT is apparently ineffective. The possible contribution of DBT to the overall butyltin toxicity on membrane systems may not be neglectable since usually TBT coexists with its derivatives in organotin‐exposed animal tissues. This study was designed to investigate the partitioning and sorptive behaviour of tributyltin(TBT), and its degradation products dibutylitin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT), in the aquatic environment. Factorial experiments were undertaken to determine the importance of pH and particulate matter concentration in the sorption of butyltin compounds to solid phases. Results indicate that in freshwaters MBT, and to a lesser extent TBT, will be partitioned towards the particulate phase, whereas DBT exhibits a 50:50 partitioning between particulate and solution phases. In estuarine waters, whilst MBT will almost exclusively sorb on to particulates, TBT will be predominantly in the solid-phase fractions but 10–30% may remain in solution. DBT, in contrast, is solubilized in estuarine waters. A more detailed investigation of TBT sorption and particulate matter concentration was undertaken using adsorption isotherms on different sediment types. The results from batch isotherm tests plotted according to the Freundlich adsorption model revealed that TBT adsorption varied with sediment type, increasing in the order sandy-silt < silty-sand < silty-clay. TBT sorption was found to be reversible, indicating that contaminated sediments may release TBT to overlying waters following sediment distrubance. Interstitial water partitioning studies indicate that TBT predominates in the particulate phase with partition coefficients for TBT higher than for DBT and MBT. The TBT partition coefficient in interstitial waters appears to be related to total organic carbon loadings.  相似文献

Considerable attention has been given in recent years to the possibility that xenobiotics in the environment may affect reproduction in animals. In this study, the relative impact of tributyltin(IV) (TBT) chloride, one of the most toxic environmental pollutants, was investigated using Ciona intestinalis ovary as a model system. The pleiotropic effects of TBT exposure are concentration dependent and include a decrease of ATP levels, lipid content and nucleic acid content and synthesis. In contrast, a marked increase in calcium (Ca2+) and glucose content is observed. Furthermore, TBT alters enzymatic activity, inhibiting creatine kinase and stimulating alkaline phosphatase and cholinesterase (at concentrations higher than 10?5M in sterile sea water solution). The implications of these effects on reproduction and embryonal development are discussed, along with the possibility that they reflect an extreme cellular defence mechanism triggered to avoid deleterious consequences for the survival of the species.Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The environmental impact of some organotin compounds (OTC) has given particulate importance to analytical studies. This paper reports the first attempt to apply the emerging molecular imprinting technology to this field. Several imprinted polymers have been synthesised by the non-covalent free radical approach using sodium methacrylate (NaMA) or 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) as monomers in the presence of TBT as template molecule in three different polymerisation media (toluene, acetonitrile and methanol/water). The ability of the polymers synthesised to retain and distinguish TBT from its degradation products has been evaluated and optimized. The results clearly showed the presence of cavities within the polymeric matrix allowing specific recognition of TBT. Cross-reactivity from other Sn species (monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT) and inorganic Sn) has also been evaluated. Rapid and direct differentiation of TBT from its main degradation products in seawater was achieved. The analytical characteristics included linearity (0.05-50 μg l−1), a pre-concentration factor of 150, and a quantification limit of 0.04 μg l−1 for 1 l.  相似文献

The sorption of tributyltin (TBT) by phytoplankton cells was studied by exposing the marine microflagellated alga Pavlova lutheri grown in batch culture to TBT chloride concentrations ranging from 0.37 to 74 nM (0.1 to 21 μg l−1) for a 24-hour period. The phytotoxicity of TBT was indicated by a decrease in cell density at all TBT concentrations used. TBT was tightly bound to the surface cell and was only washed out by a strong acidic solution (pH⩽3) while inner cell-absorbed TBT was only recovered by means of an organic solvent. The sorption of TBT by P. lutheri occurred via two mechanisms: a passive ionic surface adsorption followed by a facilitated intracellular absorption. The coupling/uncoupling of these two mechanisms was dependent upon the contamination level used. The cell surface adsorption of TBT was best described by the Freundlich adsorption model whereas the obstruction of the facilitated absorption mechanism was apparently related to the toxic activity of TBT towards cell components. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The sorption behaviour of tributyltin (TBT) from reconstituted seawater onto municipal solid waste (MSW) compost was investigated to give first insights into the equilibrium and kinetic behaviour of this process. The rate of adsorption, the influence of pH, and the adsorbate hydrophobicity on the partitioning process were investigated. Adsorption kinetics indicated an initial fast rate of adsorption of TBT followed by a slower rate. The similarity of Freundlich sorption and desorption coefficients for TBT showed that the sorption process is also reversible, similar to that for the adsorption of TBT onto marine sediments. It was found that the adsorption capacity for TBT onto compost was highest at pH 6.7, and for other organotins it increased with increasing adsorbate hydrophobicity, following the trend tripropyltin < TBT < tripentyltin. The use of washed MSW compost as a sorbent for the purification of TBT‐contaminated wash waters as generated in large quantities during hull cleaning in dry docks is suggested as a mitigatory measure against pollution of the marine environment by TBT. Calculations suggest that modest amounts of compost will likely be required to treat the contaminated wastewaters generated from the Malta dry docks if a multiple batch system is adopted. The aim of this study is to understand the sorption of tributyltin (TBT) onto natural quartz sand by classical batch experiments and spectroscopic surface analyses. At pH<6, the major species of TBT is the cation TBT(+). Due to the presence of both the cationic part and the butyl chains, TBT should present amphiphilic properties. For concentrations lower than 40 microM, TBT sorption occurs as a homovalent 1:1 cation exchange between either H(+) or Na(+) and TBT(+). The increasing affinity of TBT with respect to the different materials follows the series kaolinite相似文献

A rapid and simple method for separation and determination of tributyltin (TBT) in mineral and tap water is described. The procedure is based on the selective retention of TBT by a chelating resin, Amberlite XAD-2 impregnated with tropolone. The addition of 0.8% sulfuric acid to the water sample leads to the retention of TBT by the resin while monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT) and inorganic tin remain in solution. TBT is eluted with methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) obtaining a preconcentration factor of 80. Tin concentration is determined by ETAAS using zirconium coated tubes. Multi-injection and hot injection techniques are used in order to enhance the sensitivity of the method. A detection limit of 14.4 ng L(-1) is achieved with recoveries near to 100%. The procedure has been successfully applied to TBT determination in various fresh water samples.  相似文献

We first measured the effects of trace levels of an endocrine disruptor, tributyltin (TBT), on the secretion response from nerve cells using a microfabricated biosensor designed for the continuous measurement of L-glutamate and hydrogen peroxide. We observed higher and long-lasting glutamate and hydrogen peroxide concentrations from the cells when cultured rat cortical neurons were exposed to TBT. Glutamate and hydrogen peroxide release was induced even when we reduced the TBT concentration to 10 nM. This concentration is about two orders of magnitude lower than the concentration that induced apoptosis-like cell death. We also report on the effects of NMDA and non-NMDA receptor antagonists, which can help us to understand the mechanism of TBT neurotoxicity.  相似文献

Butyltin concentrations have been measured at eight freshwater sites (rivers and lakes) in the Norfolk Broads, UK, during 1986 and 1987. Tributyltin (TBT) was found in water samples from seven of the sites. Wherever TBT was present, dibutyltin and (usually) monobutyltin occurred. Levels of TBT exceeded 100 ng dm?3 in open stretches of both the Rivers Bure and Yare in 1986 and 1987. The highest concentration of TBT recorded for Wroxham Broad (a shallow lake) was 898 ng dm?3. Values of up to 3.26 μg dm?3 were measured in water samples taken from a marina. A depth profile for Wroxham Broad showed TBT to be uniformly distributed throughout the shallow water column. The results are discussed in relation to toxicity of TBT to freshwater organisms. Laboratory measurements of the degradation of TBT in freshwater from a marina gave a half-life of six days at 20°C in the light.  相似文献

Tributyltin biomonitoring using prosobranchs as sentinel organisms   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Tributyltin (TBT) compounds, some of the most toxic xenobiotics, produce a variety of pathological reactions in animals. A reliable biomonitoring method to assess the degree of environmental TBT pollution has been described based on investigations of virilization phenomena in prosobranch snails (Mollusca: Gastropoda). Examples are the imposex phenomenon in marine and freshwater species, the intersex reaction in littorinids and the reduction of female sexual glands and offspring numbers in further species resulting mainly in a sterilization of females. The degree of imposex or intersex in populations is determined by different biomonitoring indices which allow to assess the TBT pollution of the environment at low costs with high precision. The effectiveness of TBT legislations is analysed by extensive surveys in France and Ireland indicating that there is still a continuing threat to sensitive marine organisms. TBT disturbs the biosynthesis of steroid hormones on the level of estrogen biosynthesis. The observed virilization phenomena seem due to an inhibition of the cytochrome P-450 dependent aromatase by this organotin compound.  相似文献

The concentration of tributyltin (TBT) in surface water from Osaka Bay ranged from 0.023 to 0.061 µg l−1 in 1989 and from not detected (ND) to 0.059 µg l−1 in 1990 while the proportion of TBT as a percentage of the total butyltins (BTs) was more than 40%. The concentration of TBT was also surveyed in the Port of Osaka and the Yodo River basin. TBT levels were highest in the estuary (the Port of Osaka), followed by sea areas (Osaka Bay) and rivers (Yodo River basin). A fairly high correlation coefficient between TBT concentration and salinity in water from the estuary and the sea areas was observed. This result shows that the TBT in the estuary water is diluted by seawater. Generally, the TBT concentrations in the water columns were distributed uniformly and the composition of the BTs was also constant. TBT was detected in sediment from Osaka Bay in the range from ND to 0.023 mg kg−1 dry weight with a high ratio of monobutyltin (MBT) to the total BTs. TBT in sediment core was also measured; its concentration decreased with core depth. It was estimated from these measurements that the release of TBT into Osaka Bay began in the 1960s. A hydride generation-atomic absorption spectrometry (HG-AAS) procedure is described for the analysis of tributyltin (TBT) in sea water. TBT is first converted to its volatile hydride form by reaction with sodium borohydride, followed by cryogenic trapping at ?196°C, and finally detection by atomic absorption spectrometry using an electrically heated quartz atomization cell. The linear range of calibration is 5-250 ng TBT (as tin). At the 5-ng level, the relative standard deviation (RSD) is 13%. The absolute detection limit (3σ) is 1.8 ng. Based on a sample volume of 500 mL, this value corresponds to a concentration detection limit 3.6 ng L?1 TBT This method has been successfully applied to the analysis of TBT in sea water collected from Keelung and Kaohsiung harbors.  相似文献

Acute toxicity (96 h) and bioconcentration experiments of tributyltin chloride (TBT) in tilapia were conducted in an aqueous solution with salinity of 15‰, and a toxicity mechanism has been suggested. The 96-h LC50 was 3.80 μg Sn l−1. Bioconcentration factors in different tissues increased in the order muscle<gill<viscera. Studies on the metabolism of TBT showed that it can be easily degraded to DBT (dibutyltin) in these tissues. Further degradation of DBT to MBT (monobutyltin) was much more difficult. A mesocosm was used for the first time to study the toxicity of TBT in tilapia. The result demonstrated that the TBT bioconcentration curve changed with the initial concentrations of TBT but the order of bioconcentration in the tissues did not change. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A headspace solid‐phase micro‐extraction (HS‐SPME) method was employed in order to study the effect of storage conditions of human urine samples spiked with tributyltin (TBT) using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. To render the analyte more volatile, the derivatization (ethylation) was made in situ by sodium tetraethylborate (NaBEt4), which was added directly to dilute unpreserved urine samples and in buffers of similar acidity. The stability of TBT in human urine matrix was compared with the stability of TBT in buffer solutions of similar pH value. Critical parameters of storage conditions such as temperature and time, which affect the stability of TBT in this kind of matrix, were examined extensively. The tests showed that the stability of TBT remains practically satisfactory for a maximum of 2 days of storage either at +4 or 20°C. Greater variations were observed in the concentration of TBT in human urine samples at +4°C and lower ones at ?20°C over a month's storage. The freeze–thaw cycles have negative effect on the stability and should be kept to a minimum. The results from spiked urine samples are also discussed in comparison to those acquired from buffer solutions of equal TBT concentration. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Tributyltin (TBT) has been measured in water in 12 of 15 harbors studied during US Navy baseline surveys. The highest concentrations of TBT (some exceeding laboratory toxicity limits) have been found in yacht harbors and near vessel repair facilities. Many sites (75%) in harbors and estuaries had no detectable (<5 ng dm?3) TBT. TBT monitoring studies with increased detection limits (<1 ng dm?3) have documented a high degree of TBT variability associated with tide, season and intermittent point source discharges. Although yacht harbors were shown to be the principal TBT source in most regions, dry-docks can be significant sources. Tributyltin degradation studies were conducted using unfiltered seawater from four geographic regions and incubated under natural conditions. Degradation half-lives were always in the range of 4–19 days, providing evidence that TBT is not highly persistent in the water column at environmental concentrations. Preliminary degradation experiments suggest that TBT has a longer residence time in sediment with a half-life of several months. Tributyltin is primarily in the dissolved form in unfiltered seawater, although the association with particulate fractions may increase in samples collected near yacht repair facilities, Partition coefficients for particulate TBT versus bulk water are frequently near 3000 and vary with the particulate concentration, salinity and presence of natural organics.  相似文献
