Luminescent liquid crystalline polymers consisting of Iridium attached to polysiloxanes are prepared. 4-Cyanophenyl 4-(allyloxy) benzoate (M1) and an Iridium complex (Ir-M2) grafted to poly(methylhydrogeno)siloxane are used for the preparation of the Iridium-containing liquid crystalline polymers. The chemical structures are characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H NMR. The mesomorphic properties and phase behaviour are investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarising optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The polymers containing <1.2 mol% of the Iridium ions reveal reversible mesomorphic phase transition, wide mesophase temperature ranges and high thermal stability. The introduction of the Iridium ions does not change the liquid crystalline state of polymer systems; on the contrary, the polymers are enabled with the luminescent properties. With the Iridium ion contents ranging between 0.3 and 1.2 mol%, luminescent intensity of polymers gradually increased. The temperature dependence of luminescent intensity was studied in the liquid crystalline phase.  相似文献

A series of side chain liquid crystalline polymers(SCLCPs) containing triphenylene(Tp) units in the side chains, denoted as PMTS(without spacer) and PMTn S(n = 2, 3, 4, 6, which is the number of the methylene units between the main chain and Tp moieties in the side chains), with different lengths of spacers were synthesized through conventional free radical polymerization. The chemical structures of the monomers were confirmed by 1H/13C-NMR, and the phase behaviors were examined by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), polarized optical microscopy(POM) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction(1D and 2D WAXD). The molecular characterization of the polymers was performed with 1H-NMR, gel permeation chromatography(GPC) and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA). The phase behaviors of the polymers have been investigated by a combination of techniques including DSC, POM, 1D and 2D WAXD. The results showed that the length of spacer has significant effects on the LC phase behavior of polymers. For PMTS and PMT2 S, they displayed the columnar phase developed by the Tp moieties and the main chain as a whole due to the strong coupling effect of the Tp moieties and the main chain. For the PMT3 S, PMT4 S and PMT6 S, they formed the symmetry hexagonal columnar(ΦH) phase owing to the decoupling effect. All of these indicated that the "decoupling effect" or "coupling effect" depended on the length of spacers, leading to the different LC phase formation mechanism.  相似文献

Luminescent lanthanide-containing chiral liquid crystalline polymers are graft-copolymerised using poly(methylhydrogeno)siloxane (PMHS), crosslinking agent, liquid crystalline monomer and lanthanide complexes. The chemical structures of the monomers are characterised by FTIR, 1?H NMR and elemental analyses. The mesomorphic properties and phase behaviour are investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarising optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The polymers containing less than 9 mol% of the crosslinking units reveal reversible mesomorphic phase transition, wide mesophase temperature ranges and high thermal stability. With the introduction of lanthanide complex units, the polymers are enabled with the significant luminescent properties. The temperature dependence of fluorescence intensity was studied in the liquid crystalline phase. The IR imaging shows that the lanthanide complex units evenly distribute in polymers.  相似文献

In a liquid crystalline side chain polyacrylate containing one center of chirality in the terminal alkyl chain of the mesogenic part, switching times of 200–400 μs were measured in the SmC* phase. Below this phase an unidentified phase exists, which shows electroclinic-like switching. The phase transition between those two phases can be shifted by applying an electric field. At higher molecular weights three subphases emerge in the SmC* region. Variation of the spacer length revealed, for the first time, ferroelectric switching even at a spacer length of only two CH2 groups. By shifting the centre of chirality into the spacer of the side group a polymer resulted, which shows electroclinic switching in the SmC* phase, changing to ferroelectric switching when the voltage is increased. Incorporation of an oxirane ring as chiral building block into the spacer yielded a polymer that shows a sign inversion of the spontaneous polarization in the SmC* phase. A polymer containing a dioxolane carbonic ester as chiral unit exhibits three switching states, with the third state existing at a low or zero electric field. This phenomenon is known for antiferroelectric liquid crystals. By doping a racemic LC polymer with a chiral monomeric LC we induced a spontaneous polarization. Colored FLC polymers were obtained by two different approaches. In an FLC–dye copolymer, increasing switching speed in three different chiral smectic phases was observed when increasing the dye concentration.  相似文献

A series of new side chain cholesteric liquid crystalline polysiloxanes was synthesized by grafting copolymerization of a mesogenic monomer (M1) and a chiral monomer (M2). The chemical structures of the monomers and polymers obtained were confirmed by FTIR, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The mesomorphic properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The influence of the content of the chiral unit on phase behaviour of the polymers is discussed. Monomer M1 showed nematic and smectic phases on cooling. The polymers P1 and P2 showed a nematic phase, P3-P5 showed cholesteric Grandjean texture, and P6 and P7 exhibited smectic short-rod texture. The polymers containing more than 7.2 mol % and less than 28.6 mol % of the chrial unit showed an induced cholesteric phase. Experimental results demonstrated that the glass transition, melting and clearing temperatures decreased with increasing content of the chiral unit.  相似文献

Among the NLO processes that have been studied, one of the most visually dramatic is the frequency doubling. In the field of optical information storage this process can provide the conversion of near-infrared laser light from diode lasers into deep blue light. Compared to the more traditional inorganic NLO materials, polymers with polarizable aromatic pendant side groups are increasingly being recognized as the materials of the future. Recently it has been pointed out that the axial ordering spontaneously present in nematic and smectic A polymers can be used to enhance field-induced polar ordering by elongating the orientational distribution function along the electric field direction. Depending on the value of the microscopic order parameters <P>2 and <P>4, the performance may be improved by a factor of 1 to 5 by using LCPs instead of ordinary amorphous polymers for SHG.1-4) Interesting results have been obtained for copolyethers prepared by chemical modification of polyepichlorohydrin with classical 4-cyano-4'-hydroxybiphenyl mesogenic group which possesses NLO properties itself.5-8) These copolyethers afford the opportunity to fine-tune the polymer properties by varying the concentration of the mesogenic side groups. As the concentration is increased, we move from a purely isotropic polymer to a nematic polymer. Spin-coated films have been activated using the corona poling technique and the order parameters <P>2 have been determined from optical absorption spectra. The second harmonic coefficients d33 and d31 have been measured and compared with different statistical models. In view of the great practical importance, characterization of the wavelength dispersion has been carried out. It agrees well with the two-level approximation model. The dynamics of optical SHG has been investigated. It has been shown that both the presence of LC character in the material and the temperature at which the films are stored below Tg are important in determining the stability of the SH coefficients. A polyacrylate and a polymethacrylate bearing the same 4-cyanobiphenyl-based side groups have also been studied.7-8) Of particular interest is the fact that the former is nematic while the latter is purely isotropic at rest, the addition of a methyl group to each structural unit of the polyacrylate backbone creating a higher conformational barrier to mesogen packing. Studies of the temporal and thermal characteristics of the poling process have been performed to: •understand and control the poling process with the intention of maximizing poling induced nonlinearity and stability. •elucidate the influence of the polymer backbone, our data including the use of the same mesogenic unit attached to increasing flexible backbones (e.g. polymethacrylate and polyether). •establish if, in the isotropic cases, noticeable axial order can be induced by the poling field, especially when the system is pulled through nematic/isotropic transition by the electric field.  相似文献

A new series of ferroelectric liquid crystals and side chain liquid crystalline polymers based on halogen-containing chiral centres has been synthesized. Chemical structures were analysed by NMR. Liquid crystal phases were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarizing microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. The behaviour of the liquid crystalline phases was investigated as a function of spacer units and differing terminal asymmetric moieties. It was found that phase transition temperatures decreased with increasing length of the oligooxyethylene spacer unit. Differing terminal asymmetric moieties led to differing mesophase phenomena. Furthermore, a wide temperature range (including room temperature) of a chiral smectic C phase was achieved.  相似文献

Amphiphilic lyotropic liquid crystalline surfactants are synthesized displaying 10-undecenoic acid as hydrophobic and ethyleneglycol units as hydrophilic parts of the molecules. By addition reaction of the monomeric surfactants with poly [oxy(methylsilylene)], the surfactants are attached as side chains to the siloxane main chain. The phase behaviour of a polymer-water system and the corresponding monomer-water system is investigated by polarizing microscopy. The monomeric surfactant exhibits a liquid crystallineM 1-phase of hexagonally packed, rod-like micelles in a concentration range of 49 to 70% surfactant. The liquid crystalline state of the polymeric surfactant is more stable, which is indicated by a broader temperature- and concentration range (35%–90% polymer surfactant). At lower concentration aM 1-phase exists, which is separated by a cubic phase from a lamellarG-phase at higher concentration of the polymer surfactant. Compared to the monomeric system, the increased stability of the polymeric mesophase can be understood by the restriction of motions of the amphiphiles due to the linkage to the polymer main chain.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. F. The preparation and phase properties of some LC pi-allyl and pi-crotyl Pd(II) side group metallorganic polymers and some related salicylaldiminates are described. The LC acrylate functionalized monomers are easily prepared, but their use to obtain the corresponding polymers by radical reaction failed because extensive decomposition of the complexes occurs with the formation of Pd metal. The synthesis of the metallated polymers was therefore performed by reacting the dimeric chloro-bridged organometallic pi-allyl or pi-crotyl Pd(II) complexes with the appropriate ligand polymer which is prepared without difficulties. The organometallic polymers show a nematic mesophase, while the ligand polymer exhibits a smectic A or C phase. Both metallated low molecular mass model compounds and the polymers give stable mesophases, although at lower temperatures compared with the parent ligand compounds.  相似文献

Eight banana-shaped side chain liquid crystalline oligomers and polymers have been synthesized by hydrosilylation of vinyl-terminated bent-core mesogens with trimethylsilyl-terminated siloxanes. The synthesized oligomers and polymers, and their olefinic precursors, were investigated by polarizing optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), electro-optical experiments and Maldi-Tof. The short-tailed olefins form a Colr mesophase, whereas those with longer chains exhibit the SmCPA mesophase. All the oligomers and polymers studied show liquid crystalline properties and do not crystallize upon cooling. Most oligomers with around four repeating siloxane units, show a lamellar (layer) structure and antiferroelectric switching properties, the SmCPA phase. XRD shows that the layer spacings are hardly influenced by the length of the terminal tails. The oligomer prepared from the smallest olefinic precursor, having the shortest alkyl tail, shows an XRD pattern reminiscent of a columnar phase, although POM displays domains of opposite chirality, and no switching behaviour could be detected. The polymers with around 35 repeating siloxane units are liquid crystalline, but due to their high viscosity a thorough characterization of the liquid crystalline phases was impossible.  相似文献

Azobenzene monomeric precursors bearing piperazine as donor moiety with different withdrawing groups and derived side chain polymethacrylates have been prepared and characterized. Monomers having terminal cyano or nitro groups, and the corresponding polymers, exhibited smectic A phases. Linear and nonlinear optical properties of every monomer and thin films of the cyano polymer ( pol‐PZ‐CN ) have been also studied. UV‐vis spectroscopy revealed out‐of‐plane orientation in the as prepared films, as confirmed by waveguide refractive index measurements. Moreover, absorption spectra indicated the presence of azo aggregates in these films. The initial molecular arrangement has been modified by applying thermal annealing within the mesophase range and UV‐blue irradiation. Although thermal annealing resulted in a significant amplification of the out‐of‐plane optical anisotropy due to thermotropic self‐organization of side chain azo moieties, irradiation with 440 nm light induced some disruption of aggregates. The nonlinear optical response of Corona poled films has been studied by second harmonic generation measurements, and the influence of the molecular arrangement on the nonlinear dij coefficients has been analyzed. The more efficient poling corresponded to preirradiated films. In any case, a noticeable degree of polar order (70% of the initial d33 value) remained for several months after the poling in films kept at RT. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In order to acquire high mobility of a mesogenic group, we propose a new type of side chain liquid crystal polymer having segmented spacers, consisting of binary moieties of an oligo(ethylene oxide) segment and analkylene segment. Six kinds of polyacrylates having segmented spacers consisting of different lengths of an oligo(ethylene oxide) and an alkylene, and having 4'-cyanobiphenyl as a mesogenic group have been synthesized, and their thermal properties investigated. Some of these polyacrylates exhibit a mesophase and show an extremely low glass transition temperature compared with LC polyacrylates having ordinary alkylene spacers.  相似文献

The synthesis and measurement of thermodynamic properties of six methacrylate-based polymers were undertaken to observe the relationship between structural aliphatic features and mesophase properties. X-ray measurements on some of the polymers investigated show, as expected, the existence of bilayered smectic phases SmC 2 and SmA d . Taking into account our previous results, an interesting trend in the tilt angle was found that might be related to the difference in alkyl chain substitution.  相似文献

The electrooptical properties of side-chain liquid crystalline polymers were investigated for the case that the mesogenic units were attached laterally rather than longitudinally to a flexible chain backbone via flexible spacer units. The experimental finding is that these polymers display unusual electrooptical properties within the isotropic phase in the neighborhood of the transition into the nematic phase. The polymers are characterized by the occurrence of a fast and a slow electrooptical response both of which show a critical divergence of the Kerr constant and the Kerr relaxation time. In addition, they show deviations between the rise and the decay values of the Kerr constants and in certain cases also of the Kerr relaxation times. Finally an overshoot of the induced birefringence following a sudden stepwise increase of the applied electric field has been found for one of these polymers. All these features can be accounted for on the basis of a newly developed theoretical approach that considers the particular dipolar and optical polarization configurations of these polymers.  相似文献

Circular dichroism (CD) was induced in the films of two achiral liquid crystalline polymers, poly[(4′-(6-(methacryloyloxy)hexyl)oxy)-(4-X)azobenzene] (PM6X, X = C and N for cyano and nitro, respectively), by irradiation with one handed circularly polarized light (CPL) at 442 nm. The CD and UV spectra of the polymeric films suggest that left-CPL induces a left helical structure and right-CPL reverses the resulting structure into a right helix. For PM6C, the photoinduced CD values of the nematic film are much higher than in the casting and isotropic film. The photoinduced chirality of PM6C films is higher than PM6N due to a higher polarity of nitro groups in PM6N. The PM6N’s CD intensity around 450 nm is increased with the irradiation time of linearly polarized light (LPL) followed by left-CPL irradiation. The correlation between azobenzene chromophores and circularly polarized light will be discussed in the paper.  相似文献

A series of cyclosiloxane-based cholesteric liquid crystalline (LC) polymers were synthesized from a cholesteric LC monomer cholest-5-en-3-yl(3β) 4-(2-propenyloxy)benzoate and a nematic LC monomer butyl 4-[4-(2-propenyloxy)benzoxy]benzoate. All the polymers exhibit thermotropic LC properties and show cholesteric phases. Most of the polymers display four types of phase transition behaviour corresponding to glass transition, melting point, cholesteric phase-blue phase transition and clearing point. The mesophase temperature range of the blue phases are as broad as 20°C. The blue phase was confirmed by the apperance of planar textures and cubic packings. With an increase of non-chiral component in the polymers, the clearing point decreases slightly, while the glass transition and melting temperatures change little. In the reflection spectra of the polymer series the reflected wavelength broadens and shifts to longer wavelength with increase of the non-chiral component in the polymer systems, suggesting that the helical pitch P lengthens.  相似文献
