We show that the branes of ten-dimensional IIA/IIB string theory must satisfy, upon toroidal compactification, specific wrapping rules in order to reproduce the number of supersymmetric branes that follows from a supergravity analysis. The realization of these wrapping rules suggests that IIA/IIB string theory contains a whole class of generalized Kaluza-Klein monopoles.  相似文献

Generalized membrane solutions of D = 11 supergravity, for which the transverse space is a toric hyper-Kahler manifold, are shown to have IIB duals representing the intersection of parallel 3-branes with 5-branes whose orientations are determined by their charge vectors. These IIB solutions, which generically preserve 3/16 of the supersymmetry, can be further mapped to solutions of D = 11 supergravity representing the intersection of parallel membranes with any number of fivebranes at arbitrary angles. Alternatively, a subclass (corresponding to non-singular D = 11 solutions) can be mapped to solutions representing the intersection on a string of any number of D-5-branes at arbitrary angles, again preserving 3/16 supersymmetry, as we verify in a special case by a quaternionic extension of the analysis of Berkooz, Douglas and Leigh. We also use similar methods to find new 1/8 supersymmetric solutions of orthogonally intersecting branes.  相似文献

We probe doubled geometry with dual fundamental branes, i.e. solitons. Restricting ourselves first to solitonic branes with more than two transverse directions we find that the doubled geometry requires an effective wrapping rule for the solitonic branes which is dual to the wrapping rule for fundamental branes. This dual wrapping rule can be understood by the presence of Kaluza-Klein monopoles. Extending our analysis to supersymmetric solitonic branes with less than or equal to two transverse directions we show that such solitons are precisely obtained by applying the same dual wrapping rule to these cases as well. This extended wrapping rule cannot be explained by the standard Kaluza-Klein monopole alone. Instead, it suggests the existence of a class of generalized Kaluza-Klein monopoles in ten-dimensional string theory.  相似文献

In the paper we present a theory of random cylinders attached to branes. We analyse fluctuations and construct a theory of large deviations.  相似文献

In this Letter we consider the previously proposed generalised space–time and investigate the structure of the field theory upon which it is based. In particular, we derive a SO(D,D)SO(D,D) formulation of the bosonic string as a non-linear realisation at lowest levels of E11sl1E11sl1 where l1l1 is the first fundamental representation. We give a Hamiltonian formulation of this theory and carry out its quantisation. We argue that the choice of representation of the quantum theory breaks the manifest SO(D,D)SO(D,D) symmetry but that the symmetry is manifest in a non-commutative field theory. We discuss the implications for the conjectured E11E11 symmetry and the role of the l1l1 representation.  相似文献

We investigate the possibility of self-tuning of the effective 4D cosmological constant in 6D supergravity, to see whether it could naturally be of order 1/r4 when compactified on two dimensions having Kaluza–Klein masses of order 1/r. In the models we examine supersymmetry is broken by the presence of non-supersymmetric 3-branes (on one of which we live). If r were sub-millimeter in size, such a cosmological constant could describe the recently-discovered dark energy. A successful self-tuning mechanism would therefore predict a connection between the observed size of the cosmological constant, and potentially observable effects in sub-millimeter tests of gravity and at the Large Hadron Collider. We do find self-tuning inasmuch as 3-branes can quite generically remain classically flat regardless of the size of their tensions, due to an automatic cancellation with the curvature and dilaton of the transverse two dimensions. We argue that in some circumstances six-dimensional supersymmetry might help suppress quantum corrections to this cancellation down to the bulk supersymmetry-breaking scale, which is of order 1/r. We finally examine an explicit realization of the mechanism, in which 3-branes are inserted into an anomaly-free version of Salam–Sezgin gauged 6D supergravity compactified on a 2-sphere with nonzero magnetic flux. This realization is only partially successful due to a topological constraint which relates bulk couplings to the brane tension, although we give arguments why these relations may be stable against quantum corrections.  相似文献

The gauge theory dual to the decay of an unstable D-particle in AdS is analysed in terms of coherent states. We discuss in detail how to count the number of particles in the decay product. We find, in agreement with the analysis in flat space, that the emission amplitude is suppressed as the mass of the radiated particles increases. To cite this article: M. Zamaklar, K. Peeters, C. R. Résumé

Pour citer cet article : M. Zamaklar, K. Peeters, C. R. One notoriously difficult problem in perturbative gauge mediation of supersymmetry breaking via messenger fields is the generic presence of a phenomenologically unacceptable vacuum with messenger vevs, with a lower energy than the desired (“MSSM”) vacuum. We investigate the possibility that quantum corrections promote the latter to the ground state of the theory, and find that this is indeed feasible. For this to happen, the couplings of the messengers to the goldstino superfield must be small, and this implies an additional suppression of the MSSM soft terms with respect to the supersymmetry breaking scale. This in turn sets a lower limit on the masses of the messengers and of the supersymmetry breaking fields, which makes both sectors inaccessible at colliders. Contrary to other scenarios like direct gauge mediation, gaugino masses are unsuppressed with respect to scalar masses.  相似文献

We consider a thick brane model using two interacting scalar fields in 7D and 8D gravity. Using a special choice of potential energy, we obtain numerically regular asymptotically flat vacuum solutions. The possibility of obtaining the similar solutions for an arbitrary number of extra spatial dimensions is being estimated.  相似文献

We make connections between studies in the condensed matter literature on quantum phase transitions in square lattice antiferromagnets, and results in the particle theory literature on abelian supersymmetric gauge theories in 2 + 1 dimensions. In particular, we point out that supersymmetric U(1) gauge theories (with particle content similar, but not identical, to those of theories of doped antiferromagnets) provide rigorous examples of quantum phase transitions which do not obey the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm (often referred to as transitions realizing “deconfined criticality”). We also make connections between supersymmetric mirror symmetries and condensed matter particle-vortex dualities.  相似文献

We study N = 1 dualities in four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories as the world volume theory of D4 branes with one compact direction in type IIA string theory. We generalize the previous work for SO(Nc1) × Sp(Nc2) with the superpotential W = TrX4 to the case of W = TrX4(k+1) in terms of brane configuration. We conjecture that the new dualities for the product gauge groups of SO(Nc1) × Sp(Nc2) × SO(Nc3), SO(Nc1) × Sp(Nc2) × SO(Nc3) × Sp(Nc4) and higher multiple product gauge groups can be obtained by reversing the ordering of NS5 branes and D6 branes while preserving the linking numbers. We also describe the above dualities in terms of wrapping D6 branes around 3-cycles of Calabi-Yau threefolds in type IIA string theory. The theory with adjoint matter can be regarded as taking multiple copies of NS5 brane in the configuration of brane or geometric approaches.  相似文献

We investigate (4+1)- and (5+0)-dimensional gravity coupled to a non-compact scalar field sigma-model in the context of a single-brane-world scenario with separable metric and a bulk fluid. We briefly discuss the standard cosmological solutions and the family of warp factors (which includes both the original Randall–Sundrum [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83 (1999) 3370, hep-ph/9905221; Phys. Rev. Lett. 83 (1999) 4690, hep-th/9906064] solution and the solution of Kachru, Schulz and Silverstein [H.A. Chamblin, H.S. Reall, Nucl. Phys. B 562 (1999) 133, hep-th/9903225; S. Kachru, M. Schulz, E. Silverstein, Phys. Rev. D 62 (2000) 045021, hep-th/0001206]) for the case of a rolling fifth radius [C. Kennedy, E.M. Prodanov, Phys. Lett. B 488 (2000) 11, hep-th/0003299]. We show how this model can be adjusted so that it describes the standard cosmology on a self-tuning domain wall (with static fifth radius) [C. Kennedy, E.M. Prodanov, hep-th/0010202] and we discuss the solutions. Searching for a possible relation to the negative Euclidean stress energy, appearing in the Giddings and Strominger's axion induced topology change in quantum gravity and string theory [S.B. Giddings, A. Strominger, Nucl. Phys. B 306 (1988) 890], we modify the non-compact sigma-model into a single-field model (with a rolling fifth radius, separable metric, and no bulk fluid) for the more general case of a brane with non-zero curvature parameter. We find a solution (with a Kachru–Schulz–Silverstein warp factor [Phys. Rev. D 62 (2000) 045021, hep-th/0001206]), representing a Tolman wormhole for a brane with Lorentz metric and for a brane with positive definite metric.  相似文献

We derive the action for a massive tensor multiplet coupled to chiral and vector multiplets as it can appear in orientifold compactifications of type IIB string theory. We compute the potential of the theory and show its consistency with the corresponding Kaluza‐Klein reduction of N = 1 orientifold compactifications. The potential contains an explicit mass term for the scalar in the tensor multiplet which does not arise from eliminating an auxiliary field. A dual action with an additional massive vector multiplet is derived at the level of superfields.  相似文献

We study braneworld models in the presence of auxiliary fields. We use the first-order framework to investigate several distinct possibilities, where the standard braneworld scenario changes under the presence of the parameter that controls the auxiliary fields introduced to modify Einstein’s equation. The results add to previous ones, to show that the minimal modification that we investigate contributes to change quantitatively the thick braneworld profile, although no new qualitative effect is capable of being induced by the minimal modification here considered.  相似文献

If string theory is correct, then our observable Universe may be a 3-dimensional “brane” embedded in a higher-dimensional spacetime. This theoretical scenario should be tested via the state-of-the-art in gravitational experiments—the current and upcoming gravity-wave detectors. Indeed, the existence of extra dimensions leads to oscillations that leave a spectroscopic signature in the gravity-wave signal from black holes. The detectors that have been designed to confirm Einstein's prediction of gravity waves, can in principle also provide tests and constraints on string theory. Recent work has established a correspondence between the tripartite entanglement measure of three qubits and the macroscopic entropy of the four-dimensional 8-charge STU black hole of supergravity. Here we consider the configurations of intersecting D3-branes, whose wrapping around the six compact dimensions T6 provides the microscopic string-theoretic interpretation of the charges, and associate the three-qubit basis vectors |ABC>, (A, B, C=0 or 1) with the corresponding 8 wrapping cycles. In particular, we relate a well-known fact of quantum information theory, that the most general real three-qubit state can be parameterized by four real numbers and an angle, to a well-known fact of string theory, that the most general STU black hole can be described by four D3-branes intersecting at an angle.  相似文献
