The opposed jet configuration presents a canonical geometry suitable for the evaluation of calculation methods seeking to reproduce the impact of strain and re-distribution on turbulent transport in reacting and non-reacting flows. The geometry has the advantage of good optical access and, in principle, an absence of complex boundary conditions. Disadvantages include low frequency flow motion at high nozzle separations and comparatively low turbulence levels causing bulk strain to exceed the turbulent contribution at small nozzle separations. In the current work, fractal generated turbulence has been used to increase the turbulent strain and velocity measurements for isothermal flows are reported with an emphasis on the axis, stagnation plane and the distribution of mean and instantaneous strain rates. Energy spectra were also determined. The instrumentation comprised hot-wire anemometry and particle image velocimetry with the flows to both nozzles seeded with 1  $\upmu$ m silicon oil droplets providing a relaxation time of ? 3 $\upmu$ s. It is shown that fractal grids increase the turbulent Reynolds number range from 48–125 to 109–220 for bulk velocities from 4 to 8 m/s as compared to conventional perforated plate turbulence generators. Low frequency motion of the order 10 Hz could not be completely eliminated and probability density functions were determined for the location of the stagnation plane. Results show that the fluctuation in the position of the stagnation plane is of the order of the integral length scale, which was determined to be 3.1±0.1 mm at the nozzle exits through the use of hot-wire anemometry. Flow statistics close to the fractal plate located upstream of the nozzle exit were also determined using a transparent glass nozzle.  相似文献

This paper attempts to reproduce numerically previous experimental findings with opposed flows and extends their range to quantify the effects of upstream pipes and nozzles with inviscid, laminar and turbulent flows. The choice of conservation equations, boundary conditions, algorithms for their solution, the degree of grid dependence, numerical diffusion and the validity of numerical approximations are justified with supporting calculations where necessary. The results of all calculations on the stagnation plane show maximum strain rates close to the annular exit from the nozzles and pipes for lower separations and it can be expected that corresponding reacting flows will tend to extinguish in this region with the extinction moving towards the axis. With laminar flows, the maximum strain rate increased with Reynolds number and the maximum values were generally greater than with inviscid flows and smaller than with turbulent flows. With large separations, the strain rates varied less and this explains some results with reacting flows where the extinction appeared to begin on the axis. The turbulent‐flow calculations allowed comparison of three common variants of a two‐equation first‐moment closure. They provided reasonable and useful indications of strain rates but none correctly represented the rms of velocity fluctuations on the axis and close to the stagnation plane. This paper presents comprehensive measurements of wall pressure and surface shear stress beneath a plane, two-dimensional, turbulent jet impinging normally onto a flat surface. The results cover a wider range of Reynolds number and ratio of impingement height (H) to nozzle gap (D) than do previous studies. The pressure distributions are nearly Gaussian, independent of Reynolds number, and closely balance the momentum flux from the jet nozzle as H/D varies. Particular attention was paid to probe size in measuring the wall shear stress because this has a significant effect on the results. A range of Preston tubes and Stanton probes were tested from which it was found that a 0.05-mm-high Stanton probe—the smallest that we could make—appeared to give accurate results. As expected, the shape of the wall shear stress distributions depended both on H/D and on Reynolds number. Furthermore, the relation between wall pressure and shear stress from Hiemenz's theoretical solution for stagnation flow is not in agreement with the results. It is postulated that the discrepancy is due to the relatively high free-stream turbulence level in the jet. Future papers will document the mean flow field and turbulence and the time dependence of the surface pressure.  相似文献

Tomographic particle image velocimetry (Tomo-PIV) was applied on a turbulent round air jet to quantitatively assess the accuracy of velocity gradients obtained in the self-similar turbulent region. The jet Reynolds number based on the nozzle diameter (d) was Red = 3000. Mean velocity, turbulent intensities, and Reynolds shear stress at the center plane of the jet were measured. In addition, statistical results of Tomo-PIV along the axial direction were assessed by performing a separate set of two-dimensional two-component PIV experiments on a “side view” plane along the jet axis. Moreover, the probability distribution functions of four components of the measured velocity gradients in the axial and radial directions were validated by these “side view” planar PIV data. The root mean square of the velocity divergence values relative to the norm of the velocity gradient tensor was 0.36. Furthermore, the on- and off-diagonal components of the velocity gradients satisfied the axisymmetric isotropy conditions. The divergence error in the data affected only areas with low gradient magnitude. Therefore, turbulent structures in the regions with intense vorticity and dissipation can be closely monitored. On this basis, the joint pdfs of the invariants of the velocity gradient and strain and rotation tensor rates were produced and compared well with those in isotropic turbulence studies.  相似文献

An experimental investigation is presented of a turbulent jet issuing from a round sharp-edged orifice plate (OP) into effectively unbounded surroundings. Planar measurements of velocity were conducted using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in the near and transition regions. The Reynolds number, based on the jet initial diameter and velocity, is approximately 72,000. The instantaneous and mean velocities, Reynolds normal and shear stresses were obtained. The centerline velocity decay and the half-velocity radius were derived from the mean velocity. It is revealed that primary coherent structures occur in the near field of the OP jet and that they are typically distributed asymmetrically with respect to the nozzle axis. Comparison of the present PIV and previous hot-wire measurements for the OP jet suggests that high initial turbulence intensity leads to reduced rates of decay and spread of the mean flow field and moreover a lower rate of variation of the turbulence intensity. Results also show that self-similarity of the mean flow is well established from the transition region while the turbulent statistics are far from self-similar within the measured range to 16 diameters.  相似文献

The behavior of a non-buoyant circular water jet discharged from a contraction nozzle was experimentally investigated. In this experiment, the Reynolds number of the jet, based on the mean velocity results obtained by particle image velocimetry (PIV), ranged from 177 to 5,142. From the experimental results, we found that the cross-sectional profile of the axial velocity for a laminar flow near the nozzle did not show a top-hat distribution, whereas the profiles with Reynolds number higher than 437 were almost top-hat. The length of the zone of flow establishment (ZFE) was found to decrease with increasing Reynolds number. The measured centerline velocity decayed more rapidly and, consequently, approached the theoretical equation earlier near the nozzle as the Reynolds number increased. The decay constant for the centerline velocity of the turbulent cases was relatively lower than that discovered in theory. It is assumed that this probably resulted from the use of the contraction nozzle. Verifying the similarity of the lateral velocity profiles demonstrated that the Gaussian curve was properly approximated only for the turbulent jets and not for the laminar or transitional flows. The jet half width seldom grew for the laminar or transitional flows, whereas it grew with increasing axial distance for the turbulent flows. The spreading rates for the turbulent flows gradually decreased with increasing Reynolds number. The normalized turbulence intensity along the jet centerline increased more rapidly with the axial distance as the Reynolds number increased, and tended to the constant values proposed by previous investigators. The Reynolds shear stress levels were also found to increase as the Reynolds number increased for the turbulent jets.  相似文献

Laser Doppler measurements and flow visualization are presented for a turbulent circular jet emerging into a low-velocity cross-stream and, then, impinging on a flat surface perpendicular to the jet-nozzle axis. The experiments were performed for a Reynolds number based on the jet-exit conditions of 6 × 104, a jet-to-crossflow velocity ratio of 30 and for an impingement height of 5 jet diameters and include mean and turbulent velocity characteristics along the two normal directions contained in planes parallel to the nozzle axis. The results, which have relevance to flows found beneath VSTOL aircraft in ground effect, show the presence of a complex 3-D scarf vortex formed around the impinging jet. In zones where measurement data are not available, the flow details are numerically-visualized using a solution of the finite difference form of the fully threedimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, incorporating the turbulence viscosity concept. The turbulent structure of the flow is affected by flow distortion at the impinging zone, which results in an unconventional behaviour of the dimensionless structure parameters that determine the empirical constants in engineering models of turbulence. The relative magnitude of the terms involved in the transport equations for the turbulent stresses is quantified from the experimental data in order to assess the importance of these effects and show the extent to which the turbulent structure of the impingement zone is affected by extra rates of strain.  相似文献

The flow in a rotatable nozzle is calculated within the framework of the Reynolds equations and the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model on the pressure difference range 1.1 < π < 5 for four configurations of the nozzle with the area ratio ε = 1.52 and two angles of the nozzle axis rotation. The flow structure is determined and the thrust characteristics and the angles of the thrust vector rotation are obtained. It was found that in the overexpansion regime the flows in plane symmetric and rotatable nozzles involve hysteresis phenomena due the Coanda effect and the interaction between the boundary layer and a shock generated within the nozzle on its supersonic walls. The hysteresis phenomena detected provide an up-to-4% divergence in the thrust coefficient for the same problem parameters. The results of the numerical modeling are compared with the experimental data and the results of calculations in accordance with Sekundov’s model.  相似文献

In present research, two turbulent opposed impinging air jets issuing from triangular nozzles with fixed and variable exit velocity ratios and different nozzle-to-nozzle distances have been studied numerically and then compared with rectangular and circular nozzles. The finite volume method has been applied for solving mass and momentum equations. The turbulence model being used here is k-ε RNG. Distributions of pressure, turbulence, kinetic energy and its dissipation rate in various regions especially on the impingement regions have been obtained with high accuracy. Study of the nozzle geometries has shown the advantage of triangular nozzles over other geometries. First, the triangle’s base in nozzle geometry has an important role in our study case which, mixing two flows and regions with high turbulence intensity, directly depends on it. Second, our results show that circular and rectangular nozzles have less efficiency than triangular nozzles in mixing applications. Third and last, it was found that the radial jet being created by opposed jets has some similarities to free jets. In this investigation, air in standard atmospheric pressure has been applied as working fluid.  相似文献

The k − turbulence model and a version of a second-moment closure, modified to include the effect of pressure reflections from a solid surface, have been used as the basis of predictions of the flow that results from the orthogonal impingement of circular and two-dimensional (2-D) jets on a flat surface. Comparison of model predictions has been made with velocity measurements obtained in the stagnation and wall jet regions of the impinging flows. Results, in general, confirm the superiority of the Reynolds stress transport equation model for predicting mean and fluctuating velocities within the latter regions of such flows. In particular, modifications to the second-moment closure to account for the influence of the surface in distorting the fluctuating pressure field away from the wall successfully predict the damping of normal-to-wall velocity fluctuations throughout the impinging flows. In contrast, results derived from the eddy-viscosity-based approach do not, in general, accurately reproduce experimental observations.  相似文献

Turbulent opposed jet (TOJ) burners are an interesting test case for fundamental combustion research and a good benchmark for the available modelling approaches. However, these opposed jet flames strongly depend on the turbulence generation inside the nozzle, which is usually achieved through a perforated plate upstream of the nozzle exit. The present work investigates the flow from these perforated plates and the subsequent turbulence generation in great detail. We present results from highly-resolved large eddy simulations (LES) of the in-nozzle flow in turbulent opposed jets alongside state-of-the-art particle image velocimetry (PIV) at standard and high repetition rates taken inside a glass nozzle. The in-nozzle PIV data provides the LES inflow conditions with unprecedented detail, which are used to follow the initial jet development behaviour known from PIV, before jet coalescence, turbulence production and decay further downstream in the nozzles are successfully predicted. In regions where the PIV experiment suffers from inherent limitations like reflections and the velocity bias, the LES data is available to still obtain a detailed picture of the flow. The sensitivity of the simulations to various physical and numerical parameters is discussed in detail. Results from LES and PIV are compared qualitatively and quantitatively in terms of first and second moments of velocity, temporal autocorrelations, and energy density spectra. Significant deviations are found in the frequency (20%) and strength of vortex shedding from the inlet plane only, whereas the qualitative and quantitative agreement between simulation and experiment is otherwise excellent throughout, implying that a successful large eddy simulation of a turbulent opposed jet can be performed in a domain that includes the perforated plates.  相似文献

 Profiles of static pressure and the mean and rms of velocity fluctuations in opposed isothermal jets were measured with a combination of static-pressure probes, hot-wire and laser-Doppler velocimetry. The static pressures close to the axis at the outlet planes of the two jets increased as the separation was reduced below three diameters, with measurable and increasing radial flow below 0.8 diameters. This, in turn, reduced the mean axial velocity on the axis of symmetry. The mean strain rate along the stagnation plane was near constant over much of the impingement region for separations greater than 1.0 diameter and a maximum occurred at radial distances which increased as the jet separation was reduced below this value. The maximum values stemmed from the exit-plane profiles and were larger than the bulk strain rate by a factor which increased with radial distance from 2 to 5 for separations of 0.8 and 0.2 diameters. The non-uniform radial profile of mean strain rate caused local extinction of premixed flames to occur initially in the region of the maximum value and, with further increase in the bulk, and therefore in mean strain rate, it moved radially inwards to produce complete extinction. The bulk strain rate for complete extinction increased non-linearly with separation so that it was almost three times larger at 0.2 than at 0.8 diameters. In the present study, gas jet emerging from an annular nozzle and impinging onto a cylindrical cavity is considered. The geometric configuration of the nozzle is varied in the simulations. Air is used as impinging gas while stainless steel is considered as workpiece material. Reynolds turbulence model is accommodated to account for the turbulence. A numerical scheme employing a control volume approach is used to simulate the flow field. Heat transfer characteristic and shear stress distribution around the cavity are computed. It is found that outer cone angle of the annular nozzle influences the heat transfer rates from the cavity wall. The flow structure around the cavity changes significantly with increasing cavity diameter. Moreover, increasing cavity depth results in stagnation zone moving into the cavity.  相似文献

Turbulent free jets issuing from five different nozzle geometries; smooth pipe, contracted circular, rectangular, triangular, and square, are experimentally investigated by using TSI 2-D laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) to assess the effect of nozzle geometry and quarl (i.e. a cylindrical sudden expansion) on jet entrainment and spreading. The centerline mean velocity decay and the jet half-velocity width, which are indicators of jet entrainment and spreading rates, are determined for each nozzle’s flow configuration, i.e. with and without sudden expansion. Furthermore, turbulence quantities, such as the flow mean velocities and their mean fluctuating components, as well as Reynolds shear stresses, are all measured along the centerline plane of the jet to facilitate understanding the extent of the effect of nozzle’s geometry (i.e. nozzle’s orifice shape and sudden expansion) on jet’s entrainment and spreading. The main results show that the jet flow with the presence of sudden expansion exhibits higher rates of entrainment and spreading than without. In addition, these results reveal that sudden expansion exercises a greater effect on the asymmetric jet characteristics, especially for the triangular and rectangular nozzles compared to their axisymmetric counterparts (i.e. circular contracted nozzle).  相似文献

Experimental results are presented for characteristics of impingement heat transfer caused by three slot jets. Experimental values were obtained for the dimensionless distance H = 0.5−3, dimensionless pitch P = 6−16, and Reynolds number Re = 500−8000. For laminar impinging flow, they were compared with numerical results. For turbulent impinging flow, two peaks of the local Nusselt number were obtained behind the second nozzle. The position of the second peak approached the nozzle as the space between nozzle and impinged surface decreased. The average Nusselt number between the central and second nozzles was determined from the ratio P/H and the Reynolds number based on the pitch of the nozzles.  相似文献

The flows in Laval nozzles with a ero-length region of abrupt constriction and in nozzles with smooth entrance regions are studied on the basis of the Reynolds equations supplemented by a differential turbulence model. It is established that the viscosity effect does not lead to flow separation in the vicinity of the minimum section of optimal nozzles with an abrupt constriction. In all the examples calculated, the thrust of these nozzles is greater than that of nozzles with smooth a constriction and an optimally contoured supersonic part, the flow rate through the nozzle being larger when viscosity is taken into account than in the ideal (inviscid) case.  相似文献

An experimental investigation has been completed to study several methods of avoiding the jet screech phenomenon due to air jet impingement on solid boundaries. Measurements were completed in the Mach number region of M=0.5 using a 25 mm diameter nozzle with the air jet impinging on flat, concave and convex boundaries. Sound pressure levels were recorded in the plane of the nozzle outlet at a distance of 1.46 m from the jet axis. Hot wire studies and the stagnation pressure at the impingement zone of the jet were also recorded.With the air jet impinging on the flat board normal to its surface a maximum sound pressure occurred at a spacing of approximately two nozzle diameters producing a distinct screech at a sound level of 20 dB above that of the free jet. Three methods of preventing this screech were studied. First, by inserting disturbances into the shear layer at the nozzle exit; second, by changing the geometry of the boundary shape to improve the jet stability in the impingement region; and third, by introducing disturbances at the stagnation region which had the effect of displacing the distinct screech to another frequency range.  相似文献

An experimental study using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) on free jets issuing from different orifice plate (OP) nozzles is reported. Mean velocity, turbulence intensity and higher order profiles relevant for large and small scale mixing are considered in the near field and interaction zone (0 < X/D < 20). This is done to determine mixing enhancement due to rectangular, squared, elliptic and triangular nozzles in comparison to circular nozzle results in two orthogonal planes. The effect of Reynolds number on the differences among the nozzle shapes is also considered by performing measurements just after laminar–turbulent transition (Re = 8000) and in the fully turbulent regime (Re = 35,000). The results at low Reynolds number show two classes of jets, i.e. at one side, those closer to axial-symmetric conditions, as circular, square and triangular jets, whereas on the other side those with elongated nozzles as rectangular and elliptic. The reason for the different behavior of the latter is connected to the phenomenon of axis-switching which allows a rearrangement of turbulence over the different velocity components and directions. However, for the highest Reynolds number investigated, all nozzles show similar behavior especially in the jet far field (X/D > 10), thus suggesting a significant Reynolds number dependence of the results.  相似文献

Measurements of mean velocity components, mean flow direction, turbulent intensities and Reynolds shear stress were made with a split film probe of hot wire anemometer to investigate the flow field generated by two identical jets of air issuing from plane parallel nozzles in a common end wall and mixing with the ambient room air. Due to the sensitivity of the split film probe to the flow direction, the reverse flow in the converging region was detected by the split film probe and observed by flow visualization. The mean velocity approaches self-preservation in both the converging and the combined regions, while the turbulent intensities and Reynolds shear stress approach self-preservation in the combined region only. The trajectory of the maximum velocity is almost unchanged by variance of nozzle spacing in the converging region. The distance of the merging point from the nozzle exit increases linearly with nozzle spacing. The spread of the converging jet increases more rapidly than that of the combined jet.  相似文献

This paper presents measurements of a plane jet impinging onto a normal flat plate placed up to five jet widths from the jet outlet. The small spacing ensured that the stagnation streamline remained in the potential core of the jet. The plate shear stress distribution compared well to that from an analytical solution for the laminar development of the plate boundary layer whose external velocity was determined from the measured pressure. By comparing the shear stress measured under the present low level of free stream turbulence (0.35%) at the jet exit with that of Tu and Wood [Exp. Thermal Fluid Sci. 13 (1996) 364–373] made at about 4%, it is concluded that the turbulence level at the nozzle exit has only a second-order influence on the surface shear stress around the stagnation point. Some spanwise non-uniformity was observed in the plate shear stress, but this was confined largely to the transition region. The mean velocity, Reynolds stresses, and fluctuating pressure were measured along the stagnation streamline using a fast-response pressure probe. A significant increase in the streamwise normal stress and the mean square of the pressure fluctuations occurred before they were eventually attenuated by the plate. This increase occurred in the region where the streamwise velocity was decreasing close to the plate causing extra energy production through the normal stresses. Spectra of the velocity and pressure fluctuations showed that the increase in level was mainly due to the low frequency motion, whereas the subsequent decrease occurred at higher frequencies.  相似文献
