We present a compact sequent calculus LKU for classical logic organized around the concept of polarization. Focused sequent calculi for classical, intuitionistic, and multiplicative-additive linear logics are derived as fragments of the host system by varying the sensitivity of specialized structural rules to polarity information. We identify a general set of criteria under which cut-elimination holds in such fragments. From cut-elimination we derive a unified proof of the completeness of focusing. Furthermore, each sublogic can interact with other fragments through cut. We examine certain circumstances, for example, in which a classical lemma can be used in an intuitionistic proof while preserving intuitionistic provability. We also examine the possibility of defining classical-linear hybrid logics.  相似文献

We present a constructive proof in Bishop’s style of Lebesgue’s dominated convergence theorem in the abstract setting of ordered uniform spaces. The proof generalises to this setting a classical proof in the framework of uniform lattices presented by Hans Weber in [Uniform lattices. The paper aims to provide precise proof theoretic characterizations of Myhill–Friedman-style “weak” constructive extensional set theories and Aczel–Rathjen analogous constructive set theories both enriched by Mostowski-style collapsing axioms and/or related anti-foundation axioms. The main results include full intuitionistic conservations over the corresponding purely arithmetical formalisms that are well known in the reverse mathematics – which strengthens analogous results obtained by the author in the 80s. The present research was inspired by the more recent Sato-style “weak weak” classical extensional set theories whose proof theoretic strengths are shown to strongly exceed the ones of the intuitionistic counterparts in the presence of the collapsing axioms.  相似文献

It is well-known that weakening and contraction cause naïve categorical models of the classical sequent calculus to collapse to Boolean lattices. Starting from a convenient formulation of the well-known categorical semantics of linear classical sequent proofs, we give models of weakening and contraction that do not collapse. Cut-reduction is interpreted by a partial order between morphisms. Our models make no commitment to any translation of classical logic into intuitionistic logic and distinguish non-deterministic choices of cut-elimination. We show soundness and completeness via initial models built from proof nets, and describe models built from sets and relations.  相似文献

The paper introduces semantic and algorithmic methods for establishing a variant of the analytic subformula property (called ‘the bounded proof property’, bpp) for modal propositional logics. The bpp is much weaker property than full cut-elimination, but it is nevertheless sufficient for establishing decidability results. Our methodology originated from tools and techniques developed on one side within the algebraic/coalgebraic literature dealing with free algebra constructions and on the other side from classical correspondence theory in modal logic. As such, our approach is orthogonal to recent literature based on proof-theoretic methods and, in a way, complements it.  相似文献

Semantical arguments, based on the completeness theorem for first-order logic, give elegant proofs of purely syntactical results. For instance, for proving a conservativity theorem between two theories, one shows instead that any model of one theory can be extended to a model of the other theory. This method of proof, because of its use of the completeness theorem, is a priori not valid constructively. We show here how to give similar arguments, valid constructively, by using Boolean models. These models are a slight variation of ordinary first-order models, where truth values are now regular ideals of a given Boolean algebra. Zagier proved that the traces of singular values of the classical j-invariant are the Fourier coefficients of a weight 3/2 modular form and Duke provided a new proof of the result by establishing an exact formula for the traces using Niebur's work on a certain class of non-holomorphic modular forms. In this short note, by utilizing Niebur's work again, we generalize Duke's result to exact formulas for traces of singular moduli of higher level modular functions.  相似文献

We present a setting in which the search for a proof of B or a refutation of B (i.e., a proof of ¬B) can be carried out simultaneously: in contrast, the usual approach in automated deduction views proving B or proving ¬B as two, possibly unrelated, activities. Our approach to proof and refutation is described as a two-player game in which each player follows the same rules. A winning strategy translates to a proof of the formula and a counter-winning strategy translates to a refutation of the formula. The game is described for multiplicative and additive linear logic (MALL). A game theoretic treatment of the multiplicative connectives is intricate and our approach to it involves two important ingredients. First, labeled graph structures are used to represent positions in a game and, second, the game playing must deal with the failure of a given player and with an appropriate resumption of play. This latter ingredient accounts for the fact that neither player might win (that is, neither B nor ¬B might be provable).  相似文献

The axioms of projective and affine plane geometry are turned into rules of proof by which formal derivations are constructed. The rules act only on atomic formulas. It is shown that proof search for the derivability of atomic cases from atomic assumptions by these rules terminates (i.e., solves the word problem). This decision method is based on the central result of the combinatorial analysis of derivations by the geometric rules: The geometric objects that occur in derivations by the rules can be restricted to those known from the assumptions and cases. This “subterm property” is proved by permuting suitably the order of application of the geometric rules. As an example of the decision method, it is shown that there cannot exist a derivation of Euclid’s fifth postulate if the rule that corresponds to the uniqueness of the parallel line construction is taken away from the system of plane affine geometry.  相似文献

Propositional and first-order bounded linear-time temporal logics (BLTL and FBLTL, respectively) are introduced by restricting Gentzen type sequent calculi for linear-time temporal logics. The corresponding Robinson type resolution calculi, RC and FRC for BLTL and FBLTL respectively are obtained. To prove the equivalence between FRC and FBLTL, a temporal version of Herbrand theorem is used. The completeness theorems for BLTL and FBLTL are proved for simple semantics with both a bounded time domain and some bounded valuation conditions on temporal operators. The cut-elimination theorems for BLTL and FBLTL are also proved using some theorems for embedding BLTL and FBLTL into propositional (first-order, respectively) classical logic. Although FBLTL is undecidable, its monadic fragment is shown to be decidable.  相似文献

We investigate model theoretic characterisations of the expressive power of modal logics in terms of bisimulation invariance. The paradigmatic result of this kind is van Benthem’s theorem, which says that a first-order formula is invariant under bisimulation if, and only if, it is equivalent to a formula of basic modal logic. The present investigation primarily concerns ramifications for specific classes of structures. We study in particular model classes defined through conditions on the underlying frames, with a focus on frame classes that play a major role in modal correspondence theory and often correspond to typical application domains of modal logics. Classical model theoretic arguments do not apply to many of the most interesting classes-for instance, rooted frames, finite rooted frames, finite transitive frames, well-founded transitive frames, finite equivalence frames-as these are not elementary. Instead we develop and extend the game-based analysis (first-order Ehrenfeucht-Fraïssé versus bisimulation games) over such classes and provide bisimulation preserving model constructions within these classes. Over most of the classes considered, we obtain finite model theory analogues of the classically expected characterisations, with new proofs also for the classical setting. The class of transitive frames is a notable exception, with a marked difference between the classical and the finite model theory of bisimulation invariant first-order properties. Over the class of all finite transitive frames in particular, we find that monadic second-order logic is no more expressive than first-order as far as bisimulation invariant properties are concerned — though both are more expressive here than basic modal logic. We obtain ramifications of the de Jongh-Sambin theorem and a new and specific analogue of the Janin-Walukiewicz characterisation of bisimulation invariant monadic second-order for finite transitive frames.  相似文献

Elementary Recursive Nonstandard Analysis, in short ERNA, is a constructive system of nonstandard analysis with a PRA consistency proof, proposed in around 1995 by Patrick Suppes and Richard Sommer. It is based on an earlier system developed by Rolando Chuaqui and Patrick Suppes. Here, we discuss the inherent problems and limitations of the classical nonstandard framework and propose a much-needed refinement of ERNA, called ERNAA, in the spirit of Karel Hrbacek’s stratified set theory. We study the metamathematics of ERNAA and its extensions. In particular, we consider several transfer principles, both classical and ‘stratified’, which turn out to be related. Finally, we show that the resulting theory allows for a truly general, elegant and elementary treatment of basic analysis.  相似文献

We survey the best known lower bounds on symbols and lines in Frege and extended Frege proofs. We prove that in minimum length sequent calculus proofs, no formula is generated twice or used twice on any single branch of the proof. We prove that the number of distinct subformulas in a minimum length Frege proof is linearly bounded by the number of lines. Depthd Frege proofs ofm lines can be transformed into depthd proofs ofO(m d+1) symbols. We show that renaming Frege proof systems are p-equivalent to extended Frege systems. In a modular approach, we lift Hilbert-style proof systems for propositional, modal and first-order logic to generalized systems for their respective team-based extensions. We obtain sound and complete axiomatizations for the dependence-free fragment FO(~) of Väänänen's first-order team logic TL, for propositional team logic PTL, quantified propositional team logic QPTL, modal team logic MTL, and for the corresponding logics of dependence, independence, inclusion and exclusion.As a crucial step in the completeness proof, we show that the above logics admit, in a particular sense, a semantics-preserving elimination of modalities and quantifiers from formulas.  相似文献

This paper is another case study in the program of logically analyzing proofs to extract new (typically effective) information (‘proof mining’). We extract explicit uniform rates of metastability (in the sense of T. Tao) from two ineffective proofs of a classical theorem of F.E. Browder on the convergence of approximants to fixed points of nonexpansive mappings as well as from a proof of a theorem of R. Wittmann which can be viewed as a nonlinear extension of the mean ergodic theorem. The first rate is extracted from Browder's original proof that is based on an application of weak sequential compactness (in addition to a projection argument). Wittmann's proof follows a similar line of reasoning and we adapt our analysis of Browder's proof to get a quantitative version of Wittmann's theorem as well. In both cases one also obtains totally elementary proofs (even for the strengthened quantitative forms) of these theorems that neither use weak compactness nor the existence of projections anymore. In this way, the present article also discusses general features of extracting effective information from proofs based on weak compactness. We then extract another rate of metastability (of similar nature) from an alternative proof of Browder's theorem essentially due to Halpern that already avoids any use of weak compactness. The paper is concluded by general remarks concerning the logical analysis of proofs based on weak compactness as well as a quantitative form of the so-called demiclosedness principle. In a subsequent paper these results will be utilized in a quantitative analysis of Baillon's nonlinear ergodic theorem.  相似文献

We shall give a direct proof of the independence result of a Buchholz style-Hydra Game on labeled finite trees. We shall show that Takeuti-Arai's cut-elimination procedure of and of the iterated inductive definition systems can be directly expressed by the reduction rules of Buchholz's Hydra Game. Following recent work of R. Cluckers and F. Loeser [Fonctions constructible et intégration motivic I, C. R. Math. Acad. Sci. Paris 339 (2004) 411-416] on motivic integration, we develop a direct image formalism for positive constructible functions in the globally subanalytic context. This formalism is generalized to arbitrary first-order logic models and is illustrated by several examples on the p-adics, on the Presburger structure and on o-minimal expansions of groups. Furthermore, within this formalism, we define the Radon transform and prove the corresponding inversion formula.  相似文献

In this paper we apply methods of proof mining to obtain a highly uniform effective rate of asymptotic regularity for the Ishikawa iteration associated with nonexpansive self-mappings of convex subsets of a class of uniformly convex geodesic spaces. Moreover, we show that these results are guaranteed by a combination of logical metatheorems for classical and semi-intuitionistic systems.  相似文献

This article presents a common generalization of the two main methods for obtaining class models of constructive set theory. Heyting models are a generalization of the Boolean models for classical set theory which are a variant of forcing, while realizability is a decidedly constructive method that has first been developed for number theory by Kleene and was later very fruitfully adapted to constructive set theory. In order to achieve the generalization, a new kind of structure (applicative topologies) is introduced, which contains both elements of formal topology and applicative structures. This approach not only deepens the understanding of class models and leads to more efficiency in proofs about these kinds of models, but also makes it possible to prove new results about the two special cases that were not known before and to construct new models.  相似文献
