Linear Arboricity and Linear k-Arboricity of Regular Graphs

 We find upper bounds on the linear k-arboricity of d-regular graphs using a probabilistic argument. For small k these bounds are new. Linear Optimal Control Problems and Generalized Linear Programs

Linear optimal control problems with state inequality constraints is an important class of large systems. This paper shows that a generalized programming formulation of these problems does not result in a decomposition over time or a maximum principle as it does for problems without the state constraints. A semi-finite generalized programming formulation, however, can be used to formally produce the maximum principle, i.e. the necessary optimality conditions, for problems under consideration.     

Linear groups

This survey article covers papers abstracted inReferativnyi Zhurnal Matematika during the period 1978–1982 and is a continuation of the surveys Linear groups published in 1967, 1971, and 1977 in the seriesAlgebra, Topology, Geometry (Itogi Nauki i Tekhniki). The main things under consideration are linear groups over rings and the structure of infinite linear groups. Linear ultrafilters

Let X be a k-vector space, and U a maximal proper filter of subspaces of X. Then the ring of endomorphisms of X that are “continuous” with respect to U modulo the ideal of those that are “trivial” with respect to U forms a division ring E(U). (These division rings can also be described as the endomorphism rings of the simple left End(X)-modules.) We study this and the dual construction, based on maximal cofiIters of subspaces of X, in particular, the relation between the constructed division rings and the original field or division ring k. We end by examining a more general construction in which X is a module over a general ring, given with both a filter and a cofilter of submodules.

In light of the Tits alternative two old areas have now acquired special importance-free linear groups and solvable linear groups; they are given special attention. Stability of Linear Parameter Varying and Linear Switching Systems

We consider stability of families of linear time‐varying systems, that are determined by a set of time‐varying parameters which adhere to certain rules. The conditions are general enough to encompass on the one hand stability questions for systems that are frequently called linear parameter varying systems in the literature and on the other hand also linear switching systems, in which parameter variations are allowed to have discontinuities. Combinations of these two sets of assumptions are also possible within the framework studied here. Under the assumption of irreducibility of the sets of system matrices, we show how to construct parameter dependent Lyapunov functions for the systems under consideration that exactly characterize the exponential growth rate. It is clear that such Lyapunov functions do not exist in general. But every system of our class can be reduced to a finite number of subsystems for which irreducibility holds.

Solving Bilevel Linear Programs Using Multiple Objective Linear Programming

We present an algorithm for solving bilevel linear programs that uses simplex pivots on an expanded tableau. The algorithm uses the relationship between multiple objective linear programs and bilevel linear programs along with results for minimizing a linear objective over the efficient set for a multiple objective problem. Results in multiple objective programming needed are presented. We report computational experience demonstrating that this approach is more effective than a standard branch-and-bound algorithm when the number of leader variables is small.     

Linear transitivity criteria

We show that different transitivity criteria for strongly continuous semigroups of operators are equivalent. We also give new results concerning the equivalence of transitivity criteria in the case of iterations of a single operator.
