The aqueous polymerization of acrylic acid and acrylamide initiated by peroxydiphosphate–sodium thiosulfate redox system was investigated within the temperature range of 25–35°C. The rates of polymerization were measured at different concentrations of oxidant, activator and monomer. The monomer and the initiator exponents were evaluated to be 1.12 and 0.51. The rate of polymerization decreases with increasing thiosulfate concentration. On the basis of the experimental observation of the dependence of the rate of polymerization, Rp, on various variables, a suitable kinetic scheme has been proposed and the rate parameters have been evaluated.  相似文献

Photopolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN), an acceptor monomer, was found to be accelerated in the presence of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE), a donor monomer. The propagation is completed by a radical mechanism as judged by copolymer compositions; in contrast to the N-vinylcarbazole–AN system studied previously. This photopolymerization system is entirely stable if kept in the dark. The comparison of the relation between Rp and [IBVE]/[AN] ratio in the monomer feed found for the spontaneous photopolymerization with that for radical polymerization initiated by azobisisobutylonitrile in the dark leads to the conclusion that the rate of photoinitiation is enhanced by the interaction between AN and IBVE, whereas the propagation step by a radical mechanism is retarded by increasing concentration of IBVE. The contact charge-transfer complex between IBVE and AN was confirmed by electronic spectroscopy of the polymerization system, which showed photosensitization by charge-transfer interaction. The spectroscopic study of other weak donor–weak acceptor systems is also discussed.  相似文献

The kinetics of polymerization of acrylamide (AM) initiated by manganese(III) acetate–ethoxyacetic acid (EAA) redox system in aqueous sulphuric acid was investigated in the temperature range 35–45°C. The effects of variations in [monomer], [Mn3+], [EAA], [H+], and ionic strength on the rates of monomer disappearance (Rp) and Mn3+ disappearance (?Rm) were studied. The polymerization process is initiated by the free radical arising from the oxidation of ethoxyacetic acid by Mn3+ and terminated by the mutual combination of growing polymer radicals. Based on the kinetic results, a suitable reaction scheme is proposed and the rate expressions are derived. The study on degree of polymerization supports the proposed scheme for polymerization. The various rate and thermodynamic parameters are evaluated.  相似文献

The polymerization of acrylonitrile was carried out using peroxydiphosphate-cyclohexanol redox system in the presence of silver ion. The rate of polymerization increases with increasing peroxydiphosphate concentration and the initiator exponent was computed to be 0.5. The rate of polymerization increases with increasing monomer concentration and the monomer exponent was computed to be unity. The plot of Rp vs [Ag+]1/2 was linear, indicating 0.5 order with respect to [Ag+]. The reaction was carried out at three different temperatures and the overall activation energy was calculated to be 7.60 kcal/mol. The effect of certain surfactants on the rate of polymerization has been investigated and a suitable kinetic scheme has been pictured.  相似文献

Vinyl thiocyanatoacetate (VTCA) was synthesized, and its radical polymerization behavior was studied in acetone with dimethyl 2,2′‐azobisisobutyrate (MAIB) as an initiator. The initial polymerization rate (Rp) at 60 °C was expressed by Rp = k[MAIB]0.6±0.1 [VTCA]1.0±0.1 where k is a rate constant. The overall activation energy of the polymerization was 112 kJ/mol. The number‐average molecular weights of the resulting poly (VTCA)s (1.4–1.6 × 104) were almost independent of the concentrations of the initiator and monomer, indicating chain transfer to the monomer. The chain‐transfer constant to the monomer was estimated to be 9.6 × 10?3 at 60 °C. According to the 1H and 13C NMR spectra of poly (VTCA), the radical polymerization of VTCA proceeded through normal vinyl addition and intramolecular transfer of the cyano group. The cyano group transfer became progressively more important with decreasing monomer concentration. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The polymerization of N‐methyl‐α‐fluoroacrylamide (NMFAm) initiated with dimethyl 2,2′‐azobisisobutyrate (MAIB) in benzene was studied kinetically and with electron spin resonance. The polymerization proceeded heterogeneously with the highly efficient formation of long‐lived poly(NMFAm) radicals. The overall activation energy of the polymerization was 111 kJ/mol. The polymerization rate (Rp) at 50 °C is given by Rp = k[MAIB]0.75±0.05 [NMFAm]0.44±0.05. The concentration of the long‐lived polymer radical increased linearly with time. The formation rate (Rp?) of the long‐lived polymer radical at 50 °C is expressed by Rp? = k[MAIB]1.0±0.1 [NMFAm]0±0.1. The overall activation energy of the long‐lived radical formation was 128 kJ/mol, which agreed with the energy of initiation (129 kJ/mol), which was separately estimated. A comparison of Rp? with the initiation rate led to the conclusion that 1‐methoxycarbonyl‐1‐methylethyl radicals (primary radicals from MAIB), escaping from the solvent cage, were quantitatively converted into the long‐lived poly(NMFAm) radicals. Thus, this polymerization involves completely unimolecular termination due to polymer radical occlusion. 1H NMR‐determined tacticities of resulting poly(NMFAm) were estimated to be rr = 0.34, mr = 0.48, and mm = 0.18. The copolymerization of NMFAm(M1) and St(M2) with MAIB at 50 °C in benzene gave monomer reactivity ratios of r1 = 0.61 and r2 = 1.79. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A kinetic study of the thermal polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by chromic acid–reducing agent (n-butanol, ethylene glycol, cyclohexanone, and acetaldehyde) systems was made. Chromic acid alone did not initiate polymerization under deaerated or undeaerated conditions. On the basis of the experimental determination of the dependencies of various variables on the rate of polymerization Rp, the rate of chromium (VI) disappearance ?RM, the degree of polymerization DP, etc., a reasonable kinetic scheme was arrived at. The mechanism with the reducing agents, n-butanol, cyclohexanone, and ethylene glycol, was found to be similar but different from that with acetaldehyde. Evidence has been presented to prove the formation of radical intermediates formed by the oxidation of the reducing agent by Cr(IV). Rate parameters for oxidation of the reducing agent and polymerization of the monomer were evaluated.  相似文献

The free‐radical homopolymerization and copolymerization behavior of N‐(2‐methylene‐3‐butenoyl)piperidine was investigated. When the monomer was heated in bulk at 60 °C for 25 h without an initiator, about 30% of the monomer was consumed by the thermal polymerization and the Diels–Alder reaction. No such side reaction was observed when the polymerization was carried out in a benzene solution with 1 mol % 2,2′‐azobisisobutylonitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. The polymerization rate equation was found to be Rp ∝ [AIBN]0.507[M]1.04, and the overall activation energy of polymerization was calculated to be 89.5 kJ/mol. The microstructure of the resulting polymer was exclusively a 1,4‐structure that included both 1,4‐E and 1,4‐Z configurations. The copolymerizations of this monomer with styrene and/or chloroprene as comonomers were carried out in benzene solutions at 60 °C with AIBN as an initiator. In the copolymerization with styrene, the monomer reactivity ratios were r1 = 6.10 and r2 = 0.03, and the Q and e values were calculated to be 10.8 and 0.45, respectively. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The kinetics of redox -initiated polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) by the systerm Mn3+-isobutyric acid (IBA) in sulfuric acid was studied in the temperature range of 35–50°C. The overall rates of polymerization (Rp), disappearance of manganic ion (?Rm), and degree of polymerization (X n), were measured with variation in [monomer], [Mn3+], [IBA], H+, μ, [Mn2+], and temperature. The polymerization is initiated by the organic free radical that develops from the Mn3+-isobutyric acid oxidation reaction. Two types of termination reactions, one by the metal ion (Mn3+) and the other by the MN3+-isobutyric acid complex are proposed to explain the kinetic results. The various rate parameters were evaluated an discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Polymerizations of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and acrylonitrile (AN) were carried out in aqueous nitric acid at 30°C with the redox initiator system ammonium ceric nitrate-ethyl cellosolve (EC). A short induction period was observed as well as the attainment of a limiting conversion for polymerization reactions. The consumption of ceric ion was first order with respect to Ce(IV) concentration in the concentration range (0.2–0.4) × 10?2 M, and the points at higher and lower concentrations show deviations from a linear fit. The plots of the inverse of pseudo-first-order rate constant for ceric ion consumption, (k 1)?1 vs [EC]?1, gave straight lines for both the monomer systems with nonzero intercepts supporting complex formation between Ce(IV) and EC. The rate of polymerization increases regularly with [Ce(IV)] up to 0.003 M, yielding an order of 0.41, then falls to 0.0055 M and again shows a rise at 0.00645 M for MMA polymerization. For AN polymerization, R p shows a steep rise with [Ce(IV)] up to 0.001 M, and beyond this concentration R p shows a regular increase with [Ce(IV)], yielding an order of 0.48. In the presence of constant [NO? 3], MMA and AN polymerizations yield orders of 0.36 and 0.58 for [Ce(IV)] variation, respectively. The rates of polymerization increased with an increase in EC and monomer concentrations: only at a higher concentration of EC (0.5 M) was a steep fall in R p observed for both monomer systems. The orders with respect to EC and monomer for MMA polymerization were 0.19 and 1.6, respectively. The orders with respect to EC and monomer for AN polymerization were 0.2 and 1.5, respectively. A kinetic scheme involving oxidation of EC by Ce(IV) via complex formation, whose decomposition gives rise to a primary radical, initiation, propagation, and termination of the polymeric radicals by biomolecular interaction is proposed. An oxidative termination of primary radicals by Ce(IV) is also included.  相似文献

The polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by an ascorbic acid–peroxodisulfate redox system was studied in an aqueous solution at 35°C in the presence of air. Molecular oxygen was found to have no effect on the polymerization reaction. An increase in ionic strength slightly increased the rate. The overall rate of polymerization, Rp, showed a square dependence on [monomer] and a half-order dependence on [peroxodisulfate]. A first-order dependence on [ascorbic acid] at low concentrations (<3.0 × 10?3 mol L?1) followed by a decrease in Rp at higher concentrations of ascorbic acid (>3.0 × 10?3 mol L?1) was also noted. Rp remained unchanged up to 40°C and showed a decline thereafter. Addition of catalytic amounts of cupric ions decreased the rate whereas ferric ions were found to increase the rate. Added sulfuric acid in the range (6.0?50.0) × 10?5 mol L?1 decreased the Rp.  相似文献

Photopolymerization of the vinyl monomer (M) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was kinetically studied by using near-UV/visible light at 40°C and employing a morpholine (MOR)–sulfur dioxide (SO2) charge-transfer (C-T) complex as the photoinitiator. The rate of polymerization (RP) was found to be dependent on the morpholine: sulfur dioxide mole ratio; the 1 : 2 (MOR–SO2) complex acted as the latent initiator complex C which underwent further complexation with the monomer molecules to give the actual initiating complex I. Using the 1 : 2 (MOR–SO2) C-T complex as the latent initiator, the observed kinetics may be expressed as RP [MOR–SO2]0.27[M]1.10. Benzoquinone behaved as a strong inhibitor. Polymers obtained tested positive for the incorporation of a sulphonate-type end group. Polymerization followed a radical mechanism. Kinetic nonideality as revealed by a low initiator exponent and monomer exponent of greater than unity was explained on the basis of a prominent primary radical termination effect. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The rate of polymerization Rp of methyl methacrylate initiated by Fe(CIO4)3 and thiourea (TU) in tert-butyl alcohol is indepenent of [Fe(III)] and [TU] in the concentration range studied. In contrast to Rp, the degree of polymerization DP changes markedly with the change in the initiator concentration. DP is overwhelmingly lower than is expected in a standard radical polymerization at the same Rp. Further, Rp is proportional to the square of the monomer concentration. Initiation efficiency is less than one. Independent experiments proved that in the azobisisobutyronitrile-initiated polymerization the Rp and DP are negligibly affected by [Fe(CIO4)3] or [TU], though high [TU] brings about high induction periods. The results of Fe(III)-TU-initiated polymerization have been interpreted in terms of the predominant termination of polymer radicals by primary radicals.  相似文献

Free‐radical homo‐ and copolymerization behavior of N,N‐diethyl‐2‐methylene‐3‐butenamide (DEA) was investigated. When the monomer was heated in bulk at 60 °C for 25 h without initiator, rubbery, solid gel was formed by the thermal polymerization. No such reaction was observed when the polymerization was carried out in 2 mol/L of benzene solution with with 1 mol % of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. The polymerization rate (Rp) equation was Rp ∝ [DEA]1.1[AIBN]0.51, and the overall activation energy of polymerization was calculated 84.1 kJ/mol. The microstructure of the resulting polymer was exclusively a 1,4‐structure where both 1,4‐E and 1,4‐Z structures were included. From the product analysis of the telomerization with tert‐butylmercaptan as a telogen, the modes of monomer addition were estimated to be both 1,4‐ and 4,1‐addition. The copolymerizations of this monomer with styrene and/or chloroprene as comonomers were also carried out in benzene solution at 60 °C. In the copolymerization with styrene, the monomer reactivity ratios obtained were r1 = 5.83 and r2 = 0.05, and the Q and e values were Q = 8.4 and e = 0.33, respectively. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) terminated polyacrylamide was obtained by using the EDTA–cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate [Ce(IV)] redox initiator in the aqueous polymerization of acrylamide. The polymerization behaviors as a function of the concentration of Ce(IV), EDTA, and acrylamide as well as temperature were studied. The consumption rate of cerium(IV) depends a first-order reaction on the ceric ion concentration ([Ce(IV)]). The complex formation constant (K) and disproportionation constant (kd) of Ce(IV)–EDTA chelated complex are 1.67 × 104 and 3.77 × 10?3, respectively. The rate dependences of polymerization on monomer concentration and EDTA concentration both follow a second-order reaction in the run of initial monomer concentration ([M]i) equal to 0.2 mol dm?3. The number average molecular weight increases linearly with the ratio of [M]i/[Ce(IV)]i. The mechanism and kinetics for the polymerization was proposed. The kinetic parameters involved were determined. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The aqueous polymerization of methacrylamide initiated by the ammonium persulfate/thiolactic acid redox system has been studied at 35 ± 0.2°C. The rate of polymerization is governed by the expression, Rp + Kp [MAA] 1.33 [TLA]0.22 [ammonium persulfate]0.6. The deviations from normal kinetics are discussed. A tentative mechanism of initiation is given. The temperature dependence of the rate of polymerization has been studied over the range 30–55°C. The photooxidation of caffeine in presence of peroxydiphosphate (PDP) in aqueous solution at natural pH (∼7.5) has been carried out in a quantum yield reactor using a high-pressure mercury lamp. The reactions were followed spectrophotometrically by measuring the absorbance of caffeine at λmax (272 nm). The rates of reaction were calculated under different experimental conditions. The quantum yields were calculated from the rates of oxidation of caffeine and the intensity of light at 254 nm which was measured by using peroxydisulphate solution as a standard chemical actinometer. The reaction rates of oxidation of caffeine by PDP increase with increase in [PDP] as well as with increase in light intensity, while they are independent of [caffeine]. The quantum yields of oxidation of caffeine by PDP are independent of [PDP] as well as light intensity. However, quantum yields of oxidation of caffeine by PDP increase with increase in caffeine concentration. On the basis of these experimental results and product analysis, a probable mechanism has been suggested in which PDP is activated to phosphate radical anions (PO4 ·2−) by direct photolysis of PDP and also by the sensitizing effect of caffeine. The phosphate radical anions thus produced react with caffeine by electron transfer reaction, resulting in the formation of caffeine radical cation, which deprotonates in a fast step to produce C8-OH adduct radicals. These radicals might react with PDP to give final product 1,3,7-trimethyluric acid and PO4 ·2− radicals, the latter propagates the chain reaction.  相似文献

The polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) initiated by the system of tetramethyl tetrazene (TMT) and bromoacetic acid (BA) in dimethylformamide (DMF) was studied. The TMT–BA system could initiate the polymerization of AN more easily than TMT alone. The polymerization was confirmed to proceed through a radical mechanism. The initial rate of polymerization Rp was expressed by the equation: Rp = [TMT]0.62-[BA]0.5[AN]1.5. The overall activation energy for the polymerization was estimated as 9.4 kcal/mole. In the absence of monomer, the reaction of TMT with BA in DMF was also studied kinetically by measuring the evolution of nitrogen gas. The reaction was first-order in TMT and first-order in BA; the rate data at 49°C were k2 = 9.1 × 10?2l./mole-sec., ΔH? = 17.0 kcal/mole, and ΔS? = ? 6.6 eu. In addition, the treatment of TMT with BA in benzene led to the formation of tetramethylhydrazine radical cation, which was identified by its ESR spectrum. On the other hand, the relatively strong interaction between TMT and DMF was observed by absorption spectrophotometry.  相似文献

Photopolymerization of MMA was carried out with quinaldine–bromine (QN–Br2) and lutidine–bromine (LU–Br2) charge-transfer complexes as initiators. The rate of polymerization Rp increased with rising monomer concentration and the monomer exponent was computed as unity. At first the rate of polymerization accelerated and then reduced as the initiator concentration was increased. The initiator exponent was 0.5. The reaction was carried out at three different temperatures and overall activation energy was calculated at 4.0 kcal/mol. The kinetic data and other evidence indicate that the overall polymerization takes place in a radical mechanism. A suitable mechanism is suggested.  相似文献

Gel-free cyclopolymerization of N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide has been carried out using potassium peroxodiphosphate (PDP) as initiator in combination with different activators such as mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) and thioglycollic acid (TGA) in an inert atmosphere at 45 ± 1°C and 40 ± 1°C, respectively. The rate of polymerization was found proportional to the first power of the monomer and activator concentration and the half-power of PDP in both redox systems. A mechanism involving cyclopolymerization in the propagation path has been proposed. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
