A three‐arm star azo side‐chain liquid crystalline (LC) homopolymer, poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] (PMMAZO), was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. The polymerization of 6‐(4‐methoxy‐4‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate proceeded in a controlled/“living” way. A series of three‐arm star LC block copolymers (PMMAZO‐b‐PMMA) were also synthesized. The polymers were characterized by 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatograph, and UV–vis spectra, respectively. The both polymers of PMMAZO and copolymers of PMMAZO‐b‐PMMA exhibited a smetic phase and a nematic phase. As concern to the PMMAZO, the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) and phase‐transition temperature from the smetic to nematic phase and from the nematic to isotropic phase increased with the increase of molecular weight (Mn(GPC)) of PMMAZO. The phase transition temperature of the block copolymers, PMMAZO‐b‐PMMA, with the same PMMA block was similar to that of PMMAZO. However, the Tg of the PMMAZO‐b‐PMMA decreased at low azo content and then increased with the increasing Mn(GPC) when azo content was above 61.3%. With illumination of linearly polarized Kr+ laser beam at modest intensities (35 mW/cm2), significant surface relief gratings formed on PMMAZO films with different molecular weights were observed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fuzzy set theory was used to study the relationship between the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) and structure of homopolymers. The method can map the relationship and give the Tg for 235 polymers with a standard deviation of 8 K (the confidence bound was 90%). The entropy of the fuzziness was used to quantitatively describe the interactions among groups. The method was used to predict the Tg of 10 polymers not included in the 235 polymers, with a standard deviation of 9 K (the confidence bound was 90%). The study demonstrates again that fuzzy set theory can be effectively used to investigate the quantitative structure–property relationship of polymers. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four linear polymers containing pendant azo moiety were synthesized through click chemistry for second‐order nonlinear optical study. The polymers were found soluble in most of the polar organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), chloroform, and dimethyl formamide (DMF). The polymers showed thermal stability up to 300 °C and glass transition temperatures (Tg) in the range of 120–140 °C. The molecular weights (Mw) of these polymers (measured by gel permeation chromatography) were in the range 37,900–55,000 g/mol. The polymers were found to form optically transparent films by solution casting from THF solution. Order parameters were calculated from UV–vis absorption spectra. The morphology changes in the films after poling were characterized by atomic force microscopy. The angular dependence, temperature dependence, and time dependence of second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity were obtained by using 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser. The SHG intensity remained unchanged up to 95 °C. At room temperature, it remained stable up to 8 days after initial drop of about 14%. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have used combinations of light, heat, and electrostatic fields to investigate the orientation of nonlinear azo-chromophores chemically incorporated into high glass transition temperature (Tg) polyimides. A number of nonlinear optical polyimides have been synthesized in which the interaction between the nonlinear optical chromophore and the polymer main chain was systematically altered to determine to what extent this steric interaction influences the orientation of the nonlinear chromophore. Chromophores in polymers may be oriented by a number of methods: (a) polarized light at room temperature (i.e., photo-induced orientation or PIO), (b) polarized light and electric fields (i.e., photo-assisted poling or PAP) at temperatures ranging from room temperature to the polymer Tg, and (c) electric fields at Tg (thermal poling). While thermal poling and PIO are usually possible, PAP depends strongly on the molecular structure of the polymer. Previously we have shown that PIO can be accomplished at room temperature in a system where the nonlinear chromophore is embedded into the polyimide main chain via the donor substituent, and this orientation can only be thermally erased at temperatures approaching Tg. In this article we show that, whereas photoisomerization can efficiently depole donor-embedded polyimides in a matter of few minutes at room temperature, PAP does not induce any polar order. This behavior is in marked contrast to a structurally related, side-chain, nonlinear polyimide, in which the azo chromophore is tethered via a flexible linkage to the polymer backbone. In this case some PAP occurs even at room temperature, while no PAP is observed for a donor-embedded system with a similar Tg. We suggest that the orientation during PAP below Tg in the side-chain polyimide is primarily due to the movement of the azo side chains, and there is a very little coupling of this motion to the main chain. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Fuzzy set theory can be used to study the relationship between the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) and structure of polymers. We used the method to map this relationship and obtained Tg's for 241 polymers with a standard deviation of 20 K (the confidence bound was 90%). We also used the method to predict Tg's for 15 polymers with a standard deviation of 67 K (the confidence bound was 90%). Light scattering spectra of two polymers, polyisobutylene (PIB) and polystyrene (PS), were analyzed in the broad frequency range at temperatures above the glass transition (Tg ). At high temperatures, the spectra followed the qualitative scenario suggested by mode‐coupling theory (MCT) of the glass transition. The crossover temperature (Tc ) was defined to be approximately 1.35 Tg in PIB and approximately 1.15 Tg in PS. At lower temperatures (T < Tc ), the light scattering spectra deviated strongly from the idealized MCT scenario. Different signs of the dynamic transition around Tc are discussed. The difference between the suggested interpretation and an old idea of the liquid–liquid transition in polymeric liquids is stressed: we describe the transition as purely dynamic in nature. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of methacrylates bearing bicyclobis(γ‐butyrolactone) (BBL) moiety were synthesized and radically polymerized to afford the corresponding poly(methacrylate)s bearing BBL moiety in the side chain, with expecting that the high polarity and rigidity of BBL would be inherited by the polymers. The resulting polymers were soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide and N,N‐dimethylformamide because of the high polarity of the BBL moiety. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the polymers depended on the length of methylene linker that tethered the methacrylate and BBL moieties, making the use of shorter linkers lead to higher Tgs. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Compared with linear polymers, more factors may affect the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of a hyperbranched structure, for instance, the contents of end groups, the chemical properties of end groups, branching junctions, and the compactness of a hyperbranched structure. Tg's decrease with increasing content of end‐group free volumes, whereas they increase with increasing polarity of end groups, junction density, or compactness of a hyperbranched structure. However, end‐group free volumes are often a prevailing factor according to the literature. In this work, chain‐end, free‐volume theory was extended for predicting the relations of Tg to conversion (X) and molecular weight (M) in hyperbranched polymers obtained through one‐pot approaches of either polycondensation or self‐condensing vinyl polymerization. The theoretical relations of polymerization degrees to monomer conversions in developing processes of hyperbranched structures reported in the literature were applied in the extended model, and some interesting results were obtained. Tg's of hyperbranched polymers showed a nonlinear relation to reciprocal molecular weight, which differed from the linear relation observed in linear polymers. Tg values decreased with increasing molecular weight in the low‐molecular‐weight range; however, they increased with increasing molecular weight in the high‐molecular‐weight range. Tg values decreased with increasing log M and then turned to a constant value in the high‐molecular‐weight range. The plot of Tg versus 1/M or log M for hyperbranched polymers may exhibit intersecting straight‐line behaviors. The intersection or transition does not result from entanglements that account for such intersections in linear polymers but from a nonlinear feature in hyperbranched polymers according to chain‐end, free‐volume theory. However, the conclusions obtained in this work cannot be extended to dendrimers because after the third generation, the end‐group extents of a dendrimer decrease with molecular weight. Thus, it is very possible for a dendrimer that Tg increases with 1/M before the third generation; however, it decreases with 1/M after the third generation. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New diene and dithiol monomers, based on aromatic imides such as benzophenone‐3,3′,4,4′‐tetracarboxylic diimide were synthesized and used in thiol‐ene polymerizations which yield poly(imide‐co‐thioether)s. These linear polymers exhibit limited solubility in various organic solvents. The molecular weights of the polymers were found to decrease with increasing imide content. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of these polymers is dependent on imide content, with Tg values ranging from ?55 °C (with no imide) up to 13 °C (with 70% imide). These thermal property improvements are due to the H‐bonding and rigidity of the aromatic imide moieties. Thermal degradation, as studied by thermogravimetric analysis, was not significantly different to the nonimide containing thiol‐ene polymers made using trimethyloylpropane diallyl ether and 3,5‐dioxa‐1,8‐dithiooctane. It is expected that such monomers may lead to increased glass transition temperatures in other thiol‐ene polymer systems as these normally exhibit low glass transition temperatures. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Bis(4-oxybenzoic acid) tetrakis(phenoxy) cyclotriphosphazene (IUPAC name: 4-[4-(carboxyphenoxy)-2,4,6,6-tetraphenoxy-1,3,5,2λ5,4λ5,6λ5-triazatriphosphinin-2-yl]oxy-benzoic acid) was synthesized and direct polycondensed with diphenylether or 1,4-diphenoxybenzene in Eaton's reagent at the temperature range of 80–120°C for 3 hours to give aromatic poly(ether ketone)s. Polycondensations at 120°C gave polymer of high molecular weight. Incorporation of cyclotriphosphazene groups in the aromatic poly(ether ketone) backbone greatly enhanced the solubility of these polymers in common organic polar solvents. Thermal stabilities by TGA for two polymer samples of polymer series ranged from 390 to 354°C in nitrogen at 10% weight loss and glass transition temperatures (Tg) ranged from 81.4 to 89.6°C by DSC. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. As the minimum features in semiconductor devices decrease, it is a new trend to incorporate copper and polymers with dielectric constant less than 3.0 to enhance the performance of the devices. Two fluorinated polymers, poly(biphenyl perfluorocyclobutyl ether) (BPFCB) and poly(1,1,1-triphenyl ethane perfluorocyclobutyl ether) (PFCB), are newly developed polymers with dielectric constants below 3.0. These two polymers have a similar backbone structure, but PFCB has the capability of crosslinking. To know the implications of these two polymers in the semiconductor industry, properties that are important for the integral reliability of Integral Circuits (IC), such as thermal and mechanical properties, should be understood. This comparative study shows that the crosslinking in perfluorocyclobutane aromatic ether polymer can reduce vertical thermal expansion and increase glass transition temperature (Tg) while water absorption, crystalline-like phase, and dielectric constant are slightly increased. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Polyimide copolymers containing 2,2′‐bipyridine were synthesized and characterized. The glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) of the polymers ranged from 260 to 300 °C. In contrast to most known organic chromophore‐containing polyimides, the polyimide copolymers in this study showed elevated Tg's (270–320 °C) after coordination with nickel malenonitriledithiolate inorganic chromophores. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. New ether dimer (ED‐Eh) and diester (EHDE) derivatives of α‐(hydroxymethyl)acrylate, each having two 2‐ethylhexyl side chains, and an amine‐linked di(2‐ethylhexyl)acrylate (AL‐Eh), having three 2‐ethylhexyl side chains, were synthesized and (co)polymerized to evaluate the effects of differences in the structures of the monomers on final (co)polymer properties, particularly glass transition temperature, Tg. The free radical polymerizations of these monomers yielded high‐molecular–weight polymers. Cyclopolymer formation of ED‐Eh and AL‐Eh was confirmed by 13C NMR analysis and the cyclization efficiencies were found to be very high (~100%). Copolymers of ED‐Eh, EHDE, and AL‐Eh with methyl methacrylate (MMA) showed significant Tg decreases over poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) due to 2‐ethylhexyl side groups causing “internal” plasticization. Comparison of the Tg's of the copolymers of 2‐ethylhexyl methacrylate, ED‐Eh, EHDE, and AL‐Eh with MMA revealed that the impacts of these monomers on depression of Tg's are identical with respect to the total concentration of the pendent groups. This is consistent with an earlier study involving copolymers of monomers comprising one and two octadecyl side groups with MMA. That is, the magnitude of decrease in Tg's was quantitatively related to the number of the 2‐ethylhexyl pendent groups in the copolymers rather than their placement on the same or randomly incorporated repeat units. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The behavior of relatively monodisperse adsorbed poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) samples, from 19 to 587 kDa on silica, was studied using modulated differential scanning calorimetry and FTIR. On untreated Cab? O? Sil silica, the glass transition temperatures (Tgs) were higher (by around 30 °C), and the transitions were significantly broader (by a factor of 5–6) than those for the corresponding bulk samples. While the Tgs for the bulk polymers showed the expected dependence on molecular mass, the polymers on untreated silica showed little dependence, i.e., at the same adsorbed amounts, the glass transitions were very similar. The FTIR spectra of the adsorbed PMMA (on untreated silica) showed the presence of at least two resonances, one for the bound (hydrogen bonded to surface silanols) and another for free carbonyls. Fitting of the spectra allowed the estimation of the bound fractions of carbonyls that were dependent on the adsorbed amount, but not molecular mass. On Cab? O? Sil treated with hexamethyldisilizane (HMDS), the adsorbed PMMA exhibited glass transition behavior with little molecular‐mass dependence; the Tgs for the different PMMA samples were very similar to those of the high‐molecular mass bulk polymer, but with additional broadening of about a factor of 2. FTIR spectra for the PMMA samples on the treated silica did not show significant amounts of any of the hydrogen‐bonded carbonyl groups. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ability to prepare high Tg low shrinkage thiol–ene materials is attractive for applications such as coatings and dental restoratives. However, thiol and nonacrylated vinyl materials typically consist of a flexible backbone, limiting the utility of these polymers. Hence, it is of importance to synthesize and investigate thiol and vinyl materials of varying backbone chemistry and stiffness. Here, we investigate the effect of backbone chemistry and functionality of norbornene resins on polymerization kinetics and glass transition temperature (Tg) for several thiol–norbornene materials. Results indicate that Tgs as high as 94 °C are achievable in thiol–norbornene resins of appropriately controlled chemistry. Furthermore, both the backbone chemistry and the norbornene moiety are important factors in the development of high Tg materials. In particular, as much as a 70 °C increase in Tg was observed in a norbornene–thiol specimen when compared with a sample prepared using allyl ether monomer of analogous backbone chemistry. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two series of polyimides based on laterally attached p‐terphenyl and biphenyl groups were synthesized. The solubility and thermal properties were studied using DSC, thermogravimetric analysis, and the solubility test. These polymers exhibited good thermal stability and excellent solubility. The high solubility for both polymer series was attributed to the non‐coplanarity of diamine monomers and the use of fluorinated dianhydride, whereas the slightly better solubility for polymers based on p‐terphenyl was attributed to further weakening of interchain interaction of the polymers. Both polymer series exhibited glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) in the range of 244–272 °C. The Tg's of polymers containing laterally attached p‐terphenyls were higher than those of their counterparts containing biphenyls by 5–17 °C. This was attributed to the formation of an interdigitated structure that hinders the segmental movement of polymer chains. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Novel poly(arylene ether)s were synthesized from new biphenol monomers 14–16 1 containing imido‐ or dicyanoarylene groups. The syntheses of these polymers were carried out in tetramethylene sulfone in the presence of anhydrous K2CO3, by a nucleophilic substitution condensation between the biphenol and activated difluoro compounds to give high molecular weight polymers. All the polymers have high Tg 's and good thermal stability as determined from DSC and TGA analysis. Inherent viscosities of these polymers are in the range of 0.33–0.63 dL/g. They are amorphous and readily soluble in NMP, DMF, and DMSO. The glass‐transition temperatures of the polymers range from 248–295 °C. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Diffusion of gases in polymers below the glass transition temperature, Tg, is strongly modulated by local chain dynamics. For this reason, an analysis of pulsed field gradient (PFG) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) diffusion measurements considering the viscoelastic behavior of polymers is proposed. Carbon‐13 PFG NMR measurements of [13C]O2 diffusion in polymer films at 298 K are performed. Data obtained in polymers with Tg above (polycarbonate) and below (polyethylene) the temperature set for diffusion measurements are analyzed with a stretched exponential. The results show that the distribution of diffusion coefficients in amorphous phases below Tg is wider than that above it. Moreover, from a PFG NMR perspective, full randomization of the dynamic processes in polymers below Tg requires long diffusion times, which suggests fluctuations of local chain density on a macroscopic scale may occur. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Torsional braid analysis was used to investigate the crosslinking behavior of linear quinoxaline polymers with and without reactive side groups. The kinetic parameter followed was the glass transition temperature during isothermal exposure in an inert atmosphere. With high molecular weight polyamide-quinoxaline copolymers (PPAQ), an initial decrease in Tg was observed during heat exposure which was followed by a subsequent increase in Tg. This was attributed to simultaneous chain scission and crosslinking reactions. Since the effect of random chain scission on the initial change in Tg of the highest molecular weight polymer samples is much stronger than on low molecular weight analogues, a Tg minimum was observed only on the highest molecular weight polymers. Because of the complexity of the reactions occurring one must consider the activation energies obtained from the Arrhenius plots as “apparent” activation energies. No attempt was made to elucidate the mechanisms of these reactions. It has been shown that isothermal heat exposure of high-temperature aromatic polymers in an inert atmosphere leads to crosslinking. In general, however, linear polymers that have reactive side groups such as methyl or carboxyphenyl groups along the polymer chain crosslink more rapidly than the analogs without these groups.  相似文献

The nanobubble inflation method is the only experimental technique that can measure the viscoelastic creep compliance of unsupported ultrathin films of polymers over the glass–rubber transition zone as well as the dependence of the glass transition temperature (Tg) on film thickness. Sizeable reduction of Tg was observed in polystyrene (PS) and bisphenol A polycarbonate by the shift of the creep compliance to shorter times. The dependence of Tg on film thickness is consistent with the published data of free‐standing PS ultrathin films. However, accompanying the shift of the compliance to shorter times, a decrease in the rubbery plateau compliance is observed. The decrease becomes more dramatic in thinner films and at lower temperatures. This anomalous viscoelastic behavior was also observed in poly(vinyl acetate) and poly (n‐butyl methacrylate), but with large variation in the change of either the Tg or the plateau compliance. By now, well established in bulk polymers is the presence of three different viscoelastic mechanisms in the glass–rubber transition zone, namely, the Rouse modes, the sub‐Rouse modes, and the segmental α‐relaxation. Based on the thermorheological complexity of the three mechanisms, the viscoelastic anomaly observed in ultrathin polymer films and its dependence on chemical structure are explained in the framework of the Coupling Model. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
