The kinetics of the styrene emulsion polymerization using n‐dodecyl mercaptan as chain‐transfer agent was studied. It was found that the chain‐transfer agent (CTA) had no effect on polymerization rate but substantially affected the molecular weight distribution (MWD). The efficiency of the CTA in reducing the MWD was lowered by the mass‐transfer limitations. The process variables affecting CTA mass transfer were investigated. A mathematical model for the process was developed. The outputs of the model include monomer conversion, particle diameter, number of polymer particles, and number‐average and weight‐average molecular weights. The model was validated by fitting the experimental data. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 4490–4505, 2000  相似文献

A high-pressure differential scanning calorimetric technique is described for studying polymer plasticization by compressed gases at pressures to 100 atm. The in situ measurements avoid problems due to gas desorption encountered with conventional DSCs, thus providing an accurate way to determine the change in glass transition temperature, Tg, with pressure, p. The entire Tgp curve can be established in less than 2 days. The glass transition was observed as a sharp step in the case of 100–200-μm thin samples, whereas thicker samples gave a broad transition; highly reproducible results were obtained for the thin samples. For PS–CO2, the measured Tgs under various pressures were found to be in good agreement with literature values. Results for the systems PS–HFC134a, PVC–CO2, and PC–CO2 are also reported. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 36: 977–982, 1998  相似文献

Well-defined A-block-B type cellulose derivatives consisting of cellulose triacetate (CTA) and oligoamide-15 were synthesized. Chemical structures of the diblock copolymers were characterized by MALDI-TOF MS, 1H-NMR, and GPC. Influence of length of CTA and oligoamide-15 segments on their thermal properties was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). All diblock copolymers displayed T g, T c, and T m transition temperatures. Their T g and T m values increased with the increase of molecular weight of CTA segment. The crystallinity of diblock copolymers increased after isothermal crystallization at 200 °C. Its X-ray analysis revealed that the diblock copolymer had CTA II crystal structure. Thermal analysis supported microphase separation between CTA and oligoamide-15 segments at room temperature, because T g and T m values of polyamide-15 are −7 °C and 170–180 °C, respectively.  相似文献

The effect of crosslink density on the pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) behavior and on the pressure relaxation response for two polycyanurate networks is investigated using a custom-built pressurizable dilatometer. Isobaric cooling measurements were made to obtain the pressure-dependent glass transition temperature (Tg). The pressure relaxation studies were carried out as a function of time after volume jumps at temperatures in the vicinity of the pressure-dependent Tg, and the pressure relaxation curves obtained were shifted to construct master curves by time-temperature superposition. The reduced pressure relaxation curves are found to be identical in shape and placement, independent of crosslink density, when Tg is used as the reference temperature. The horizontal shift factors used to create the master curves are plotted as a function of the temperature departure from Tg (TTg), and they agree well with their counterparts obtained from the shear response. Moreover, the retardation spectra are derived from bulk compliance and compared to those from the shear. The results, similar to our previous work on polystyrene, indicate that at short times, the bulk and shear responses have similar underlying molecular mechanisms; however, the long-time mechanisms available to the shear response, which increase with decreasing crosslink density, are unavailable to the bulk response. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diffusion of gases in polymers below the glass transition temperature, Tg, is strongly modulated by local chain dynamics. For this reason, an analysis of pulsed field gradient (PFG) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) diffusion measurements considering the viscoelastic behavior of polymers is proposed. Carbon‐13 PFG NMR measurements of [13C]O2 diffusion in polymer films at 298 K are performed. Data obtained in polymers with Tg above (polycarbonate) and below (polyethylene) the temperature set for diffusion measurements are analyzed with a stretched exponential. The results show that the distribution of diffusion coefficients in amorphous phases below Tg is wider than that above it. Moreover, from a PFG NMR perspective, full randomization of the dynamic processes in polymers below Tg requires long diffusion times, which suggests fluctuations of local chain density on a macroscopic scale may occur. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The continuous‐multilayer model introduced in our previous study for the Tg behavior of thin films is adapted to nanocomposite systems. Tg enhancement in both thin films and nanocomposites with attractive interfacial interactions can be explained by the same model. Various shapes of nanoparticles are proposed to rationalize the adaptation of the one‐dimensional model for the Tg behavior of thin film to three‐dimensional system such as nanocomposite. The tendency of predicted Tg enhancements in poly(methyl methacrylate) and P2VP nanocomposites with silica particles are qualitatively fit to experimental data in literatures. For the further quantitative fitting, the model is partially modified with the consideration for other factors affecting Tg deviation in nanocomposite. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of nanoparticle surface chemistry on the thermal, mechanical, and magnetic properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites with cobalt ferrite nanofillers was studied by comparing nanofillers coated with oleic acid (OA; which does not covalently bond to the PMMA matrix) and 3‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS, which covalently bonds to the PMMA matrix). Thermogravimetric analysis revealed an increase in the thermal degradation temperature of the nanocomposites compared with the neat polymer. The effect of cobalt ferrite nanofiller on the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the nanocomposite was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry. The Tg value of the material increased when the particles were introduced. Dynamic mechanical analysis indicated an increase in the storage modulus of the nanocomposite because of the presence of nanofiller and a shift in the peak of loss tangent toward higher temperature. Magnetic measurements indicated that both nanocomposites had a small hysteresis loop at 300 K and no hysteresis at 400 K. However, estimates of the nanofiller's rotational relaxation times and measurements of the zero field cooled temperature‐dependent magnetization indicate that the observed lack of hysteresis at 400 K is likely because of particle rotation in the polymer matrix. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The relationship between semicrystalline morphology and glass transition temperature has been investigated for solvent-crystallized poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK). Solvent-crystallized specimens of both PEEK and PEKK displayed a sizeable positive offset in Tg compared to quenched amorphous specimens as well as thermally crystallized specimens of comparable bulk crystallinity; the offset in Tg for the crystallized samples reflected the degree of constraint imposed on the amorphous segments by the crystallites. Small-angle X-ray scattering studies revealed markedly smaller crystal long periods (d) for the solvent-crystallized specimens compared to samples prepared by direct cold crystallization. The strong inverse correlation observed between Tg and interlamellar amorphous thickness (lA) based on a simple two-phase model was in excellent agreement with data reported previously for PEEK, and indicated the existence of a unique relationship between glass transition temperature and morphology in these poly(aryl ether ketones) over a wider range of sample preparation history and lamellar structure than was previously reported. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A critical look at the possibility of controlling the molecular weight distribution (MWD) of polyolefins by combining metallocene/methylalumoxane (MAO) catalysts is offered. Catalysts investigated were bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride (Cp2ZrCl2), its titanium and hafnium analogues (Cp2TiCl2 and Cp2HfCl2), as well as rac-ethylenebis(indenyl)zirconium dichloride (Et(Ind)2ZrCl2). As observed by other researchers, the MWD of polyethylene can be manipulated by combining soluble catalysts, which on their own produce polymer with narrow MWD but with different average molecular weights. Combined in slurry polymerization reactors, the catalysts in consideration produce ethylene homopolymer just as they would independently. Unimodal or bimodal MWDs can be obtained. This effect can be mimicked by blending polymers produced by the individual catalysts. We demonstrate how a variability in catalyst activity translates into a variability in MWD when mixing soluble catalysts in polymerization. Such a variability in MWD must be considered when setting goals for MWD control. We introduce a more quantitative approach to controlling the MWD using this method. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Four well‐defined diblock copolymers and one statistical copolymer based on lauryl methacrylate (LauMA) and 2‐(acetoacetoxy)ethyl methacrylate (AEMA) were prepared using reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The polymers were characterized in terms of molecular weights, polydispersity indices (ranging between 1.12 and 1.23) and compositions by size exclusion chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy, respectively. The preparation of the block copolymers was accomplished following a two‐step methodology: First, well‐defined LauMA homopolymers were prepared by RAFT using cumyl dithiobenzoate as the chain transfer agent (CTA). Kinetic studies revealed that the polymerization of LauMA followed first‐order kinetics demonstrating the “livingness” of the RAFT process. The pLauMAs were subsequently used as macro‐CTA for the polymerization of AEMA. The glass transition (Tg) and decomposition temperatures (ranging between 200 and 300 °C) of the copolymers were determined using differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis, respectively. The Tgs of the LauMA homopolymers were found to be around ?53 °C. Block copolymers exhibited two Tgs suggesting microphase separation in the bulk whereas the statistical copolymer presented a single Tg as expected. Furthermore, the micellization behavior of pLauMA‐b‐pAEMA block copolymers was investigated in n‐hexane, a selective solvent for the LauMA block, using dynamic light scattering. pLauMA‐b‐pAEMA block copolymers formed spherical micelles in dilute hexane solutions with hydrodynamic diameters ranging between 30 and 50 nm. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Crosslinkable interpolymer complexes of novolac resin and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were prepared by mutual mixing ethanol solutions of novolac and PEO. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) studies revealed that the driving force for the formation of novolac/PEO complex is hydrogen bonding interaction between the hydroxyl groups of novolac and the ether oxygens of PEO. The morphology and thermal properties of the complexes before and after curing were investigated by optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the uncured novolac/PEO complexes had a single composition-dependent glass transition temperature (Tg). The curing with 15 wt % hexamine (HMTA) (relative to novolac content) resulted in disappearing of Tg behaviour for both the neat novolac and the novolac-rich complexes, owing to less mobility of the novolac chain segments. The melting temperature (Tm) and crystallization rate of the HMTA-cured novolac/PEO complexes decreased with increasing novolac content, and no Tm was observed for the cured complexes with PEO content less than 50%. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The curing process of hexamethylene diisocyanate‐based polyurethane has been monitored by applying FTIR and DSC methods. A general relationship between glass‐transition temperature (Tg) and conversion of curing process has been obtained. This suggests that the reaction path and the relative reaction rates are independent of the curing temperature. The reaction kinetics of the system is analyzed using the Tg data converted to the conversion of the curing process. A set of experimental data and one theoretical model of Tg versus chemical conversion are presented to prove the assumption where a direct one‐to‐one relationship between the Tg (as measured) and the chemical conversion is obtained. Apparent activation energies (Ea) obtained by applying three different methods suggest good agreement. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 2213–2220, 2000  相似文献

Polycyclotrimerization of 4,4′‐thiodiphenylcyanate was adopted as a model system for general thermosetting polymers for studying the relationship between the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) and conversion (α) during network formation. Existing expressions for Tg‐α relationship were used and compared. The experimental Tg‐α data were well fitted to several one‐parameter equations although the physical significance of parametric values thus obtained could not be unambiguously identified. Among the two‐parameter models, both the Hale–Macosko–Bair equation and the so‐called “original” DiBenedetto equation were well fitted by experimental data (when the mean‐field crosslink density was used), yielding parametric values consistent with the original designated physical meanings within the corresponding theoretical frames. Relationships between the parameters in different theories were also discussed. Incidentally, a discontinuity of ΔCpTg at the gel point was observed (i.e., ΔCpTg is of different values in the pregel and postgel regimes, respectively). © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The miscibility of poly(4-hydroxystyrene-co-methoxystyrene) (HSMS) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). HSMS/PCL blends were found to be miscible in the whole composition range by detecting only a glass transition temperature (Tg), for each composition, which could be closely described by the Fox rule. The crystallinity of PCL in the blends was dependent on the Tg of the amorphous phase. The greater the HSMS content in the blends, the lower the crystallinity. The polymer–polymer interaction parameter, χ32, was calculated from melting point depression of PCL using the Nishi-Wang equation. The negative value of χ32 obtained for HSMS/PCL blends has been compared with the value of χ32 for poly(4-hydroxystyrene) (P4HS)/PCL blends. The specific nature, quantitative analysis, and average strength of the intermolecular interactions in HSMS/PCL and P4HS/PCL blends have been determined at room temperature and in the molten state by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements. The FTIR results have been in good correlation with the thermal behavior of the blends. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 36 : 95–104, 1998  相似文献

Monomeric friction factors, Ξ, for polystyrene (PS), polyisoprene (PI), and a polystyrene–polyisoprene (SI) diblock copolymer have been determined as a function of temperature in four poly(styrene-b-isoprene-b-styrene-b-isoprene) tetrablock copolymer matrices. The Rouse model has been used to calculate the friction factors from tracer diffusion coefficients measured by forced Rayleigh scattering. Within the experimental temperature range the tetrablock copolymers are disordered, allowing for measurement of the diffusion coefficient in matrices with average compositions determined by the tetrablock copolymers (23, 42, 60, and 80% styrene by volume). Remarkably, for a given matrix composition the styrene and isoprene friction factors are essentially equivalent. Furthermore, at a constant interval from the system glass transition temperature, Tg, all of the friction factors (obtained from homopolymer, diblock copolymer, and tetrablock copolymer dynamics) agree to within an order of magnitude. This is in marked contrast to results for miscible polymer blends, where the individual components generally have distinct composition dependences and magnitudes at constant TTg. The homopolymer friction factors in the tetrablock matrices were systematically slightly higher than those of the diblock, which in turn were slightly higher than those of the homopolymers in their respective melts, when all compared at constant TTg. This is attributed to the local spatial distribution of styrene and isoprene segments in the tetrablocks, which presents a nonuniform free energy surface to the tracer molecules. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In polymers for microelectronics applications, moisture is known to have a deleterious effect upon device reliability. In this paper, the moisture transport behaviors of a newly developed family of all-aromatic and aromatic/aliphatic copolyester thermosetting films were described. The moisture uptake as a function of temperature, relative humidity, sample thickness, and processing conditions were presented via conjugate moisture sorption tests.1 It was found that the post curing near but below Tg resulted in an increase in both total moisture uptake and diffusion coefficient due to the effect of physical aging and the generation of sample defect volume. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(methylphenylsiloxane)–poly(methyl methacrylate) graft copolymers (PSXE-g-PMMA) were prepared by condensation reaction of poly(methylphenylsiloxane)-containing epoxy resin (PSXE) with carboxyl-terminated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and they were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), infrared (IR), and 29Si and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The microstructure of the PSXE-g-PMMA graft copolymer was investigated by proton spin–spin relaxation T2 measurements. The thermal stability and apparent activation energy for thermal degradation of these copolymers were studied by thermogravimetry and compared with unmodified PMMA. The incorporation of poly(methylphenylsiloxane) segments in graft copolymers improved thermal stability of PMMA and enhanced the activation energy for thermal degradation of PMMA. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Alumina/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites were synthesized by an in situ free‐radical polymerization process with 38 and 17 nm diameter γ‐alumina nanoparticles. At extremely low filler weight fractions (<1.0 wt % of 38 nm fillers or < 0.5 wt % of 17 nm fillers) the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of the nanocomposites drops by 25 °C when compared to the neat polymer. Further additions of filler (up to 10 wt %) do not lead to additional Tg reductions. The thermal behavior is shown to vary with particle size, but this dependence can be normalized with respect to a specific surface area. The nanocomposite Tg phenomenon is hypothesized to be because of nonadhering nanoparticles that serve as templates for a porous system with many internal interfaces that break up the percolating structure of dynamically heterogeneous domains recently suggested by Long, D.; and Lequeux, F. Eur Phys J E 2001, 4, 371 to be responsible for the Tg reductions in polymer ultrathin films. The results also point to a far field effect of the nanoparticle surface on the bulk matrix. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 4371–4383, 2004  相似文献

Four series of copoly(ester-imide)s (co-PEIs) were prepared by transesterification of poly(ethylene terephthalate), PET, with N-(4-carboxyphenyl)trimellitimide and an acetylated diphenol. Methylhydroquinone, tert. butylhydroquinone, phenylhydroquinone, and 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene were used as diphenols. The chemical structures of these co-PEIs were characterized by chemical analyses, 1H-, and 13C-NMR spectra. A low degree of crystallinity was observed when the PET content was above 85% mol %. Between 60 and 80 mol % PET all co-PEIs are biphasic, whereas below 60 mol % the co-PEIs form a homogeneous nematic melt and below the glass transition temperature (Tg) a nematic glass. The Tgs vary continously with the molar composition but the mechanical properties drop sharply when the nematic phase changes to an isotropic one. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
