Generating strong adhesion by engineered proteins has the potential for high technical applications. Current studies of adhesive proteins are primarily limited to marine organisms, e.g., mussel adhesive proteins. Here, we present a modular engineering strategy to generate a type of exotic protein adhesives with super strong adhesion behaviors. In the protein complexes, the lanmodulin (LanM) underwent α-helical conformational transition induced by lanthanides, thereby enhancing the stacking density and molecular interactions of adhesive protein. The resulting adhesives exhibited outstanding lap-shear strength of ≈31.7 MPa, surpassing many supramolecular and polymer adhesives. The extreme temperature (−196 to 200 °C) resistance capacity and underwater adhesion performance can significantly broaden their practical application scenarios. Ex vivo and in vivo experiments further demonstrated the persistent adhesion performance for surgical sealing and healing applications.  相似文献

We have collated various supramolecular designs that utilize organic donor–acceptor CT complexation to generate noncovalently co‐assembled structures including fibrillar gels, micelles, vesicles, nanotubes, foldamers, conformationally restricted macromolecules, and liquid crystalline phases. Possibly inspired by nature, chemists have extensively used hydrogen bonding as a tool for supramolecular assemblies of a diverse range of abiotic building blocks. As a structural motif, CT complexes can be compared to hydrogen‐bonded complexes in its directional nature and complementarities. Additional advantages of CT interactions include wider solvent tolerance and easy spectroscopic probing. Nevertheless the major limitation is their low association constant. This article shows different strategies have evolved over the years to overcome this drawback by reinforcing the CT interactions with auxiliary noncovalent forces without hampering the alternate stacking mode. Emerging reports on promising CT complexes in organic electronics are intimately related to various supramolecular designs that one can postulate based on donor–acceptor CT interactions.  相似文献

Existing grasping technologies have persistent challenges with unstructured objects and environments, highlighting an increasing demand for methods that conform to various application scenarios.Inspired by the chameleon tongue,a soft-contact grasping manipulator empowered by a class of adhesive gels has been demonstrated. The adhesives enable the manipulator to rapidly and strongly adhere to diverse substrates with varied surfaces, shapes and sizes, also to release objects under mild conditions. The robustness of such adhesive gels was highlighted with the remarkable recyclability, broad temperature tolerance and long-term stability.Furthermore,a general approach was developed to reconcile the contradiction of simultaneously enhancing their interfacial adhesion and cohesion strength that exists in conventional glues. We anticipate that this work will offer a strategy of developing adhesive materials and pave the way towards new applications of soft materials in the emerging fields of soft robotic devices and smart manufacturing.  相似文献

Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy was used to study the effect of silane headgroups on the molecular interactions that occur between poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and various epoxy silanes at the PET/silane and PET/silicone interfaces. Three different silanes were investigated: (3-glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (γ-GPS), (3-glycidoxypropyl) methyl-dimethoxysilane (γ-GPMS), and (3-glycidoxypropyl) dimethyl-methoxysilane (γ-GPDMS). These silanes share the same backbone and epoxy end group but have different headgroups. SFG was used to examine the interfaces between PET and each of these silanes, as well as silanes mixed with methylvinylsiloxanol (MVS). We also examined the interfaces between PET and uncured or cured silicone with silanes or silane-MVS mixtures. Silanes with different headgroups were found to exhibit a variety of methoxy group interfacial segregation and ordering behaviors at various interfaces. The effect of MVS was also dependent upon silane headgroup choice, and the interfacial molecular structures of silane methoxy headgroups were found to differ at PET/silane and PET/silicone interfaces. Epoxy silanes have been widely used as adhesion promoters for polymer adhesives; therefore, the molecular structures probed using SFG were correlated to adhesion testing results to understand the molecular mechanisms of silicone-polymer adhesion. Our results demonstrated that silane methoxy headgroups play important roles in adhesion at the PET/silicone interfaces. The presence of MVS can change interfacial methoxy segregation and ordering, leading to different adhesion strengths.

Sessile marine mussels must “dry” underwater surfaces before adhering to them. Synthetic adhesives have yet to overcome this fundamental challenge. Previous studies of bioinspired adhesion have largely been performed under applied compressive forces, but such studies are poor predictors of the ability of an adhesive to spontaneously penetrate surface hydration layers. In a force‐free approach to measuring molecular‐level interaction through surface‐water diffusivity, different mussel foot proteins were found to have different abilities to evict hydration layers from surfaces—a necessary step for adsorption and adhesion. It was anticipated that DOPA would mediate dehydration owing to its efficacy in bioinspired wet adhesion. Instead, hydrophobic side chains were found to be a critical component for protein–surface intimacy. This direct measurement of interfacial water dynamics during force‐free adsorptive interactions at solid surfaces offers guidance for the engineering of wet adhesives and coatings.  相似文献

Sessile organisms have undergone long‐term evolution to develop the unique ability by positioning themselves on wet solid surface through secreting adhesive proteins. The present study reveals that natural amino acid monomers can also exhibit similar adhesion capacity. This kind of biomimetic adhesives were created by the one‐step aqueous assembly of basic amino acids with assistance of anionic polyoxometalates. The polyoxometalates not only serve as multivalent scaffold to initiate the supramolecular cross‐linking of amino acid molecules, but also function as a redox component, bestowing the wet adhesives with electrochromic features.  相似文献

Supramolecular adhesives that enable debonding on-demand are of significant research interest for the development of adaptive and smart materials, yet, biodegrable supramolecular adhesives have been rarely exploited.Herein,telechelic,three-armed and four-armed CO2-based polyols with close molecular weights and various content(or carbonate unite content)have been synthesized via a zinc-cobalt double metal cyanide complex catalyzed ring-opening copolymerization of CO2 and propylene oxide, and further exploited as sustainable and biodegradable building blocks for supramolecular polymers(SMPs)with 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone(UPy)motifs.Notably,the orthogonal modulation of the CO2 content and the topology of CO2-based polyols provide a unique opportunity to fine-tune the surface energy as well as the cohesive strength of the resulting CO2-based SMPs.Notably,a three-armed SMP with 44%CO2(3UPy-CO2-44%)can well balance the trade-off between surface energy and cohesive strength, therefore bestowing a high adhesive strength of 7.5 and 9.7 MPa towards stainless steel and wood substrates respectively by testing the corresponding single lap joints. Moreover, the light-responsive adhesion property of 3UPy-CO2-44%has been demonstrated exemplarily by blending with a UV sensitizer.  相似文献

The origins for abrupt adhesion loss at a critical relative humidity (RH) for polymeric adhesives bonded to inorganic surfaces have been explored using a model poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film on glass. The interfacial and bulk water concentrations within the polymer film as a function of D 2O partial pressure were quantified using neutron reflectivity. Adhesion strength of these PMMA/SiO 2 interfaces under the same conditions was quantified using a shaft loaded blister test. A drop in adhesion strength was observed at a critical RH, and at this same RH, a discontinuity in the bulk moisture concentration occurred. The moisture concentration near the interface was higher than that in the bulk PMMA, and at the critical RH, the breadth of the interfacial water concentration distribution as a function of distance from the SiO 2/PMMA interface increased dramatically. We propose a mechanism for loss of adhesion at a critical RH based upon the interplay between bulk swelling induced stress and weakening of the interfacial bond by moisture accumulation at the PMMA/SiO 2 interface.  相似文献

Instantaneous adhesion between different materials is a requirement for several applications ranging from electronics to biomedicine. Approaches such as surface patterning, chemical cross-linking, surface modification, and chemical synthesis have been adopted to generate temporary adhesion between various materials and surfaces. Because of the lack of curing times, temporary adhesives are instantaneous, a useful property for specific applications that need quick bonding. However, to this day, temporary adhesives have been mainly demonstrated under dry conditions and do not work well in submerged or humid environments. Furthermore, most rely on chemical bonds resulting from strong interactions with the substrate such as acrylate based. This work demonstrates the synthesis of a universal amphibious adhesive solely by combining solid polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and liquid polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymers. While the dipole-dipole interactions are induced by a large electronegativity difference between fluorine atoms in PTFE and hydrogen atoms in PDMS, strong surface wetting allows the proposed adhesive to fully coat both substrates and PTFE particles, thereby maximizing the interfacial chemistry. The two-phase solid–liquid polymer system displays adhesive characteristics applicable both in air and water, and enables joining of a wide range of similar and dissimilar materials (glasses, metals, ceramics, papers, and biomaterials). The adhesive exhibits excellent mechanical properties for the joints between various surfaces as observed in lap shear testing, T-peel testing, and tensile testing. The proposed biocompatible adhesive can also be reused multiple times in different dry and wet environments. Additionally, we have developed a new reactive force field parameterization and used it in our molecular dynamics simulations to validate the adhesive nature of the mixed polymer system with different surfaces. This simple amphibious adhesive could meet the need for a universal glue that performs well with a number of materials for a wide range of conditions.  相似文献

Evolution of the adhesion behavior of a liquid crystalline system under various conditions of the adhesion joint formation was studied. A blend of hydroxypropyl cellulose with propylene glycol was selected as a model liquid crystalline system. Influence of the substrate roughness on the adhesion of the liquid crystalline systems was studied for the first time. It was found out that the roughness influence on the adhesion characteristics of the systems studied was much more pronounced than in case of the common pressure-sensitive adhesives. High values of the debonding energies for the systems studied (up to 280–330 J/m2) were obtained. These values are similar or even exceed the values obtained for the common pressure-sensitive adhesives.  相似文献

An approach was proposed for the quantitative determination of adhesion strength in composites, in which adhesion is created by other mechanisms than secondary interactions. The approach is based upon a model, which gives debonding stress as a function of interfacial adhesion. Debonding stress was determined by acoustic emission experiments. The mechanism of deformation was checked by SEM experiments and the approach was verified on composites with known interfacial adhesion. The results showed that the use of functionalized polymer in PP/CaCO3 composites resulted in adhesion strength one order of magnitude larger than without the coupling agent. The application of various surface modification techniques in PP/glass bead composites yielded different adhesion values covering a range of about one order of magnitude. The quantitative determination of interfacial adhesion makes possible the design and optimization of most surface modification techniques in particulate filled and short fiber reinforced composites.  相似文献

Antifouling properties of materials play crucial roles in many important applications such as biomedical implants, marine antifouling coatings, biosensing, and membranes for separation. Poly(ethylene glycol) (or PEG) containing polymers and zwitterionic polymers have been shown to be excellent antifouling materials. It is believed that their outstanding antifouling activity comes from their strong surface hydration. On the other hand, it is difficult to develop underwater glues, although adhesives with strong adhesion in a dry environment are widely available. This is related to dehydration, which is important for adhesion for many cases while water is the enemy of adhesion. In this research, we applied sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy to investigate buried interfaces between mussel adhesive plaques and a variety of materials including antifouling polymers and control samples, supplemented by studies on marine animal (mussel) behavior and adhesion measurements. It was found that PEG containing polymers and zwitterionic polymers have very strong surface hydration in an aqueous environment, which is the key for their excellent antifouling performance. Because of the strong surface hydration, mussels do not settle on these surfaces even after binding to the surfaces with rubber bands. For control samples, SFG results indicate that their surface hydration is much weaker, and therefore mussels can generate adhesives to displace water to cause dehydration at the interface. Because of the dehydration, mussels can foul on the surfaces of these control materials. Our experiments also showed that if mussels were forced to deposit adhesives onto the PEG containing polymers and zwitterionic polymers, interfacial dehydration did not occur. However, even with the strong interfacial hydration, strong adhesion between mussel adhesives and antifouling polymer surfaces was detected, showing that under certain circumstances, interfacial water could enhance the interfacial bio-adhesion.

The growing attention to forward osmosis (FO) membrane processes from various disciplines raises the demand for systematic research on FO membrane fouling. This study investigates the role of various physical and chemical interactions, such as intermolecular adhesion forces, calcium binding, initial permeate flux, and membrane orientation, in organic fouling of forward osmosis membranes. Alginate, bovine serum albumin (BSA), and Aldrich humic acid (AHA) were chosen as model organic foulants. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to quantify the intermolecular adhesion forces between the foulant and the clean or fouled membrane in order to better understand the fouling mechanisms. A strong correlation between organic fouling and intermolecular adhesion was observed, indicating that foulant–foulant interaction plays an important role in determining the rate and extent of organic fouling. The fouling data showed that FO fouling is governed by the coupled influence of chemical and hydrodynamic interactions. Calcium binding, permeation drag, and hydrodynamic shear force are the major factors governing the development of a fouling layer on the membrane surface. However, the dominating factors controlling membrane fouling vary from foulant to foulant. With stronger intermolecular adhesion forces, hydrodynamic conditions for favorable foulant deposition leading to cake formation are more readily attained. Before a compact cake layer is formed, the fouling rate is affected by both the intermolecular adhesion forces and hydrodynamic conditions. However, once the cake layer forms, all three foulants have very similar flux decline rates, and further changes in hydrodynamic conditions do not influence fouling behavior.  相似文献

Supramolecular building blocks, such as cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n])‐based host–guest complexes, have been extensively studied at the nano‐ and microscale as adhesion promoters. Herein, we exploit a new class of CB[n]‐threaded highly branched polyrotaxanes (HBP‐CB[n]) as aqueous adhesives to macroscopically bond two wet surfaces, including biological tissue, through the formation of CB[8] heteroternary complexes. The dynamic nature of these complexes gives rise to adhesion with remarkable toughness, displaying recovery and reversible adhesion upon mechanical failure at the interface. Incorporation of functional guests, such as azobenzene moieties, allows for stimuli‐activated on‐demand adhesion/de‐adhesion. Macroscopic interfacial adhesion through dynamic host–guest molecular recognition represents an innovative strategy for designing the next generation of functional interfaces, biomedical devices, tissue adhesives, and wound dressings.  相似文献

We have measured interactions between hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces in an aqueous medium at various pH and ionic strengths as well as in some organic solvents using atomic force microscopy and analyzed them in terms of particle adhesion and detachment from surfaces. In hydrophilic systems the forces observed were found to be well described by DLVO theory at large separation distances. Very long range hydrophobic forces were not observed in hydrophilic-hydrophobic systems. Nevertheless, the jump into contact was found to occur at distances greater that those predicted by just van der Waals attraction. The interaction between two hydrophobic surfaces was dominated by the long-range attraction due to hydrophobic forces. This interaction was found to be sensitive to the type of substrate as well as to the pH and electrolyte concentration. Measured pull-off forces showed poor reproducibility. However, average values showed clear trends and were used to estimate interfacial energies or work of adhesion for all systems studied by means of the Derjaguin approximation. These values were compared to those calculated by the surface tension component theory using the acid-base approach. Good qualitative agreement was obtained, giving support for the usefulness of this approach in estimating interfacial energies between surfaces in liquid media. A comparison of the measured adhesion force with hydrodynamic detachment experiments showed good qualitative agreement. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.  相似文献

The effect of viscoelasticity on adhesion was investigated for micropatterned epoxy surfaces and compared to nonpatterned surfaces. A two-component epoxy system was used to produce epoxy compositions with different viscoelastic properties. Pillar arrays with flat punch tip geometries were fabricated with a two-step soft lithography process. Adhesion properties were measured with a home-built adhesion tester using a spherical sapphire probe as a counter-surface. Compared to flat controls, micropatterned epoxy samples with low viscoelasticity (i.e., low damping factors) showed at least a 20-fold reduction in pull-off force per actual contact area for both low (E' = 2.3 MPa) and high (E' = 2.3 GPa) storage moduli. This antiadhesive behavior may result from poor contact formation and indicates that the adhesion performance of commonly used elastomers for dry adhesives (e.g., polydimethylsiloxane) is governed by the interfacial viscoelasticity. Adhesion significantly increased with increasing viscoelasticity. Micropatterned samples with high viscoelasticity showed a 4-fold reduction in adhesion for aspect ratio (AR) 1.1 patterns but a 2-fold enhancement in adhesion for AR 2.2 patterns. These results indicate that viscoelasticity can enhance the effect of surface patterning on adhesion and should be considered as a significant parameter in the design of artificial patterned adhesives.  相似文献

Marine mussels secret protein‐based adhesives, which enable them to anchor to various surfaces in a saline, intertidal zone. Mussel foot proteins (Mfps) contain a large abundance of a unique, catecholic amino acid, Dopa, in their protein sequences. Catechol offers robust and durable adhesion to various substrate surfaces and contributes to the curing of the adhesive plaques. In this article, we review the unique features and the key functionalities of Mfps, catechol chemistry, and strategies for preparing catechol‐functionalized polymers. Specifically, we reviewed recent findings on the contributions of various features of Mfps on interfacial binding, which include coacervate formation, surface drying properties, control of the oxidation state of catechol, among other features. We also summarized recent developments in designing advanced biomimetic materials including coacervate‐forming adhesives, mechanically improved nano‐ and micro‐composite adhesive hydrogels, as well as smart and self‐healing materials. Finally, we review the applications of catechol‐functionalized materials for the use as biomedical adhesives, therapeutic applications, and antifouling coatings. © 2016 The Authors.
