A theoretical and experimental study of light polarization modulation in single-mode anisotropic optical fibres is presented. The problem of increasing polarization modulation efficiency in slightly and strongly anisotropic fibres is considered. The requirements to be met by the optical configuration for efficient polarization modulation with both slightly and strongly anisotropic fibres are discussed. The polarization modulation signal is found to be immune to external effects on the fibre under compensated birefringence. An experimental polarization modulation-based fibredyne video transmission data highway is presented.  相似文献

An analysis is given of the effect of carrier spectral width on bandwidth of optical fibre transmission lines and a simple generalized expression is deduced relating carrier bandspread and maximum permissible pulse rate. It is shown that for the case of a semiconductor laser carrier source the bandwidth of a multimode fibre can be made to approach that expected from single-mode and graded-index fibres.  相似文献

Loss of optical power in a single-mode optical fibre due to bending has been investigated for a wavelength of 1550 nm. In this experiment, the effects of bending radius (4–15 mm, with steps of 1 mm), and wrapping turns (up to 40 turns) on loss have been studied. The behaviour of a cylindrical single-mode optical fibre piezoceramic phase modulator was investigated in the frequency range below resonance. The integral and differential phase modulation efficiencies are reported for different geometrical dimensions of the modulator and for various piezoelectric ceramic materials. p ]The results obtained show that a phase-modulation depth in excess of can be easily achieved using commercially available piezoelectric cylinders, with driving voltage amplitude as low as 5 V.  相似文献

Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in fibre seriously limits the high-capacity optical fibre communication system. The measurement of PMD was realized by three methods — wavelength scanning method, modified OTDR method and modified York S-38 dispersion meter method. Different types of fibres have been measured using the above three methods and the results have been found to be consistent. Finally, we also found that the measured results of longer non-polarization-maintaining fibre satisfied the Maxwellian probability density function and the results of polarization maintaining fibre were derived. The power-dependent pulsewidth variations for input 85 ps pulses from a cw mode-locked Nd: YAG laser propagating through 125 m of single-mode optical fibre have been examined using a Synchroscan streak camera. Using mathematical modeling, an explicit form is found for the Jones matrix of a segment of a single-mode optical fiber with random inhomogeneities, whose length is considerably greater than the correlation length of random inhomogeneities. It is shown that parameters of this matrix are of a statistical nature. A rational representation of the matrix is proposed. It is shown that, under certain conditions, one of the matrix parameters may be treated as constant, whereas the other parameter is assumed to be continuously distributed on the interval [0, 2π]. As the latter parameter is changed, which corresponds to a change from one random realization of inhomogeneities in a single-mode fiber to another, the ellipticity and the azimuth of the major axis of the polarization ellipse of natural polarization modes of a single-mode fiber simultaneously change.  相似文献

Stay cable is one of the most critical structural components of a bridge. However, it readily suffers from fatigue damage, corrosion damage, and their coupled effects. Thus, health monitoring of stay cables is important for ensuring the integrity and safety of a bridge. A smart stay cable assembled with optical fibre Bragg grating (OFBG) strain and temperature sensors was proposed in this study. To protect the OFBG sensors against breakage in application, the OFBG sensors were first incorporated into a glass-fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bar (GFRP-OFBG bar) when the bar was fabricated. To fabricate cables assembled with OFBG sensors, several GFRP-OFBG bars were inserted into the hollows of steel wires and fixed with the steel wires together at the anchorages of the cable. Therefore, the GFRP-OFBG bars can consistently deform with the steel wires in a cable and the smart stay cable can sense its own strain and temperature through OFBG sensors. The fabrication procedure of the smart stay cable was developed and the self-sensing property of the smart stay cable was calibrated. Finally, the application of the smart stay cables on the Tianjing Yonghe Bridge was demonstrated. The fatigue accumulative damage of the smart stay cables was evaluated based on field monitoring strain.  相似文献

In this paper, a new method is proposed to generate broad supercontinuum (SC) spectra in the single-mode optical fibre with concave dispersion profile. We numerically simulate pulse evolutions and discuss physics mechanism in detail for SC spectrum generation in the optical fibre with concave dispersion profile. Furthermore, general criteria are presented for specifying the shape of SC spectrum by introducing normalized parameters, which are related to the fibres and the initial pump pulses. The results show that the flat and broad SC spectra are indeed generated in our proposed optical fibre.  相似文献

Intense green and red components generated in a non-polarization preserving optical fibre using a Q-switched and mode-locked cw Nd: YAG laser have been examined spectrally and temporally with picosecond resolution. In addition to the red (four-photon interaction) and green (second-harmonic) components, many other frequency mixing processes were detected. From theoretical considerations, the red component (anti-Stokes) which is generated through parametric four photon mixing should be in the same propagation mode as the Stokes component (ir) and this was confirmed experimentally.  相似文献

A new model of the nonlinear propagation of optical solitons with initial linear frequency chirp through lossy highly birefringent fibres, allowing the improvement of the practical results concerning the distortionless signal transmission in ultrahigh-speed communications, is presented within the framework of a system of coupled nonlinear Schroedinger (CNLS) equations. A systematic experimental evaluation of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) -induced polarization-dependent gain (PDG) in forward pumped Raman amplification in dispersion-shifted and in dispersion-compensating fiber was performed. Good agreement was obtained between the measured statistical parameters and the current analytical model for PDG fluctuation statistics. The probability distribution of the PDG was approximately Maxwellian within the range PMD >0.05 ps/km(1/2). The interplay between PMD and gain fluctuations is discussed; random birefringence strongly reduces PDG fluctuations. However, the trade-off between reduction of the power penalties for PDG and increase of the penalties for PMD distortion precludes the use of PMD instead of source depolarization techniques for reduction of PDG.  相似文献

Spectral dependences of integral statistical elements of the Jones matrix of an extended segment of a single-mode optical fiber (SMOF) with random inhomogeneities, whose length considerably exceeds the correlation length of random inhomogeneities, are found by the method of mathematical modeling. The boundaries of the ranges of optical wavelengths are determined, within the limits of which the parameters under consideration remain quasi-constant. This allows the derivation of analytical expressions for the degree of polarization of nonmonochromatic radiation in an SMOF and for the zero drift in fiber ring interferometers with the help of the approximate method of small perturbations. It is shown that the small-perturbation method leads to adequate results for SMOFs with strong and intermediate linear birefringence.  相似文献

One possible way to prepare a compact optical fibre coupler (OFC) with fixed coupling ratio for applications in different devices and systems is demonstrated. Experimental and theoretical results are presented concerning the properties of the glued OFC for three different thicknesses of the glue layer: < 0.1 m; 0.8 m and 1.6 m.
