The regular representation of the quotient of a polynomial ring over the principal ideal determined by h(x) is the ring of matrices generated by the companion matrix of h(x). Properties of such rings, also called Barnett matrix rings, will be investigated.  相似文献

It is shown that the Behrens radical of a polynomial ring, in either commuting or non-commuting indeterminates, has the form of “polynomials over an ideal”. Moreover, in the case of non-commuting indeterminates, for a given coefficient ring, the ideal does not depend on the cardinality of the set of indeterminates. However, in contrast to the Brown-McCoy radical, it can happen that the polynomial ring R[X] in an infinite set X of commuting indeterminates over a ring R is Behrens radical while the polynomial ring RX〉 in an infinite set Y of non-commuting indeterminates over R is not Behrens radical. This is connected with the fact that the matrix rings over Behrens radical rings need not be Behrens radical. The class of Behrens radical rings, which is closed under taking matrix rings, is described.  相似文献

The impetus for this study is the work of Dumas and Rigal on the Jordanian deformation of the ring of coordinate functions on 2×2 matrices. We are also motivated by current interest in birational equivalence of noncommutative rings. Recognizing the construction of the Jordanian matrix algebra as a skew polynomial ring, we construct a family of algebras relative to differential operator rings over a polynomial ring in one variable which are birationally equivalent to the Weyl algebra over a polynomial ring in two variables.  相似文献

We provide a general procedure for characterizing radical-like functions of skew polynomial and skew Laurent polynomial rings under grading hypotheses. In particular, we are able to completely characterize the Wedderburn and Levitzki radicals of skew polynomial and skew Laurent polynomial rings in terms of ideals in the coefficient ring. We also introduce the T-nilpotent radideals, and perform similar characterizations.  相似文献

An n × n matrix A is called involutory iff A2=In, where In is the n × n identity matrix. This paper is concerned with involutory matrices over an arbitrary finite commutative ring R with identity and with the similarity relation among such matrices. In particular the authors seek a canonical set C with respect to similarity for the n × n involutory matrices over R—i.e., a set C of n × n involutory matrices over R with the property that each n × n involutory matrix over R is similar to exactly on matrix in C. Because of the structure of finite commutative rings and because of previous research, they are able to restrict their attention to finite local rings of characteristic a power of 2, and although their main result does not completely specify a canonical set C for such a ring, it does solve the problem for a special class of rings and shows that a solution to the general case necessarily contains a solution to the classically unsolved problem of simultaneously bringing a sequence A1,…,Av of (not necessarily involutory) matrices over a finite field of characteristic 2 to canonical form (using the same similarity transformation on each Ai). (More generally, the authors observe that a theory of similarity fot matrices over an arbitrary local ring, such as the well-known rational canonical theory for matrices over a field, necessarily implies a solution to the simultaneous canonical form problem for matrices over a field.) In a final section they apply their results to find a canonical set for the involutory matrices over the ring of integers modulo 2m and using this canonical set they are able to obtain a formula for the number of n × n involutory matrices over this ring.  相似文献

If the inverse of a square polynomial matrix L(s) is proper rational, then L(s)-1 can be written as C(sIJ)-1B. The result of this note states that if J is an nXn Jordan matrix, with n=degreedetL(s), then C consists of Jordan chains of L(s), and BT of Jordan chains of L(s)T. This is a generalization of the fact that each matrix which transforms a complex matrix A into Jordan form is made up of eigenvectors and generalized eigenvectors of A. The proof of our result relies on the realization theory of rational matrices.  相似文献

We explore elementary matrix reduction over certain rings characterized by properties related to stable range. Let R be a commutative ring. We call R locally stable if aR+bR = R??xR such that R∕(a+bx)R has stable range 1. We study locally stable rings and prove that every locally stable Bézout ring is an elementary divisor ring. Many known results on domains are thereby generalized.  相似文献

In this work, free multivariate skew polynomial rings are considered, together with their quotients over ideals of skew polynomials that vanish at every point (which includes minimal multivariate skew polynomial rings). We provide a full classification of such multivariate skew polynomial rings (free or not) over finite fields. To that end, we first show that all ring morphisms from the field to the ring of square matrices are diagonalizable, and that the corresponding derivations are all inner derivations. Secondly, we show that all such multivariate skew polynomial rings over finite fields are isomorphic as algebras to a multivariate skew polynomial ring whose ring morphism from the field to the ring of square matrices is diagonal, and whose derivation is the zero derivation. Furthermore, we prove that two such representations only differ in a permutation on the field automorphisms appearing in the corresponding diagonal. The algebra isomorphisms are given by affine transformations of variables and preserve evaluations and degrees. In addition, ours proofs show that the simplified form of multivariate skew polynomial rings can be found computationally and explicitly.  相似文献

We study the properties of palindromic quadratic matrix polynomials φ(z)=P+Qz+Pz2, i.e., quadratic polynomials where the coefficients P and Q are square matrices, and where the constant and the leading coefficients are equal. We show that, for suitable choices of the matrix coefficients P and Q, it is possible to characterize by means of φ(z) well known matrix functions, namely the matrix square root, the matrix polar factor, the matrix sign and the geometric mean of two matrices. Finally we provide some integral representations of these matrix functions.  相似文献

In a recent paper, the first author introduced a general theory of corner rings in noncommutative rings that generalized the classical theory of Peirce decompositions. This theory is applied here to the study of the stable range of rings upon descent to corner rings. A ring is called quasi-duo if every maximal 1-sided ideal is 2-sided. Various new characterizations are obtained for such rings. Using some of these characterizations, we prove that, if a quasi-duo ring R has stable range ?n, the same is true for any semisplit corner ring of R. This contrasts with earlier results of Vaserstein and Warfield, which showed that the stable range can increase unboundedly upon descent to (even) Peirce corner rings.  相似文献

If a matrix T is known only to within a tolerance ϵ (because of measurement or roundoff errors), then it may be difficult to compute an eigendecomposition of T, since its invariant subspaces are discontinuous functions of its entries. In this paper we show how to compute a stable decomposition of an uncertain matrix T which varies continuously and boundedly as T varies in a ball of radius ϵ.  相似文献

There are two kinds of polynomial functions on matrix algebras over commutative rings: those induced by polynomials with coefficients in the algebra itself and those induced by polynomials with scalar coefficients. In the case of algebras of upper triangular matrices over a commutative ring, we characterize the former in terms of the latter (which are easier to handle because of substitution homomorphism). We conclude that the set of integer-valued polynomials with matrix coefficients on an algebra of upper triangular matrices is a ring, and that the set of null-polynomials with matrix coefficients on an algebra of upper triangular matrices is an ideal.  相似文献

A ring is called commutative transitive if commutativity is a transitive relation on its nonzero elements. Likewise, it is weakly commutative transitive (wCT) if commutativity is a transitive relation on its noncentral elements. The main topic of this paper is to describe the structure of finite wCT rings. It is shown that every such ring is a direct sum of an indecomposable noncommutative wCT ring of prime power order, and a commutative ring. Furthermore, finite indecomposable wCT rings are either two-by-two matrices over fields, local rings, or basic rings with two maximal ideals. We characterize finite local rings as generalized skew polynomial rings over coefficient Galois rings; the associated automorphisms of the Galois ring give rise to a signature of the local ring. These are then used to further describe the structure of finite local and wCT basic rings.  相似文献

Two square matrices A and B over a ring are pseudosimilar if there exist X, Y, and Z satisfying XAY = B, ZBX = A, and XYX = XZX = X. Hartwig and Hall showed this is equivalent to similarity over a field. This result is extended to rings where free modules satisfy a cancellation property. These include rings R with R/rad R artinian (or more generally rings with one in the stable range) and polynomial rings over Dedekind domains. Furthermore, it is shown for commutative rings that if A and B are pseudosimilar, then diag(A, Om) and diag(B, Om) are similar for some m.  相似文献

Given a polynomial f of degree n, we denote by C its companion matrix, and by S the truncated shift operator of order n. We consider Lyapunov-type equations of the form X?SXC=>W and X?CXS=W. We derive some properties of these equations which make it possible to characterize Bezoutian matrices as solutions of the first equation with suitable right-hand sides W (similarly for Hankel and the second equation) and to write down explicit expressions for these solutions. This yields explicit factorization formulae for polynomials in C, for the Schur-Cohn matrix, and for matrices satisfying certain intertwining relations, as well as for Bezoutian matrices.  相似文献

Amitsur’s formula, which expresses det(A + B) as a polynomial in coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a matrix, is generalized for partial linearizations of the pfaffian of block matrices. As applications, in upcoming papers we determine generators for the SO(n)-invariants of several matrices and relations for the O(n)-invariants of several matrices over a field of arbitrary characteristic.  相似文献
