A numerical invariant of directed graphs concerning domination which is named signed domination number γS is studied in this paper. We present some sharp lower bounds for γS in terms of the order, the maximum degree and the chromatic number of a directed graph.

A function f:V(G)→{+1,−1} defined on the vertices of a graph G is a signed dominating function if for any vertex v the sum of function values over its closed neighborhood is at least 1. The signed domination number γs(G) of G is the minimum weight of a signed dominating function on G. By simply changing “{+1,−1}” in the above definition to “{+1,0,−1}”, we can define the minus dominating function and the minus domination number of G. In this note, by applying the Turán theorem, we present sharp lower bounds on the signed domination number for a graph containing no (k+1)-cliques. As a result, we generalize a previous result due to Kang et al. on the minus domination number of k-partite graphs to graphs containing no (k+1)-cliques and characterize the extremal graphs.

We give lower and upper bounds on the total domination number of the cross product of two graphs, γt(G×H). These bounds are in terms of the total domination number and the maximum degree of the factors and are best possible. We further investigate cross products involving paths and cycles. We determine the exact values of γt(G×Pn) and γt(Cn×Cm) where Pn and Cn denote, respectively, a path and a cycle of length n.

Let G=(V,E) be a simple graph. For an edge e of G, the closed edge-neighbourhood of e is the set N[e]={eE|e is adjacent to e}∪{e}. A function f:E→{1,−1} is called a signed edge domination function (SEDF) of G if ∑eN[e]f(e)≥1 for every edge e of G. The signed edge domination number of G is defined as . In this paper, we characterize all trees T with signed edge domination numbers 1, 2, 3, or 4.

Let G be a graph with vertex set V(G) and edge set E(G). A function f:E(G)→{-1,1} is said to be a signed star dominating function of G if for every vV(G), where EG(v)={uvE(G)|uV(G)}. The minimum of the values of , taken over all signed star dominating functions f on G, is called the signed star domination number of G and is denoted by γSS(G). In this paper, a sharp upper bound of γSS(G×H) is presented.

The closed neighborhood NG[e] of an edge e in a graph G is the set consisting of e and of all edges having an end-vertex in common with e. Let f be a function on E(G), the edge set of G, into the set {−1, 1}. If for each eE(G), then f is called a signed edge dominating function of G. The signed edge domination number γs(G) of G is defined as . Recently, Xu proved that γs(G) ≥ |V(G)| − |E(G)| for all graphs G without isolated vertices. In this paper we first characterize all simple connected graphs G for which γs(G) = |V(G)| − |E(G)|. This answers Problem 4.2 of [4]. Then we classify all simple connected graphs G with precisely k cycles and γs(G) = 1 − k, 2 − k. A. Khodkar: Research supported by a Faculty Research Grant, University of West Georgia. Let G be a graph of order n and denote the signed edge domination number of G. In [B. Xu, Two classes of edge domination in graphs, Discrete Appl. Math. 154 (2006) 1541-1546] it was proved that for any graph G of order n, . But the method given in the proof is not correct. In this paper we give an example for which the method of proof given in [1] does not work.

Let k be a positive integer and G be a simple connected graph with order n. The average distance μ(G) of G is defined to be the average value of distances over all pairs of vertices of G. A subset D of vertices in G is said to be a k-dominating set of G if every vertex of V(G)−D is within distance k from some vertex of D. The minimum cardinality among all k-dominating sets of G is called the k-domination number γk(G) of G. In this paper tight upper bounds are established for μ(G), as functions of n, k and γk(G), which generalizes the earlier results of Dankelmann [P. Dankelmann, Average distance and domination number, Discrete Appl. Math. 80 (1997) 21-35] for k=1.

The signed edge domination number and the signed total edge domination number of a graph are considered; they are variants of the domination number and the total domination number. Some upper bounds for them are found in the case of the n-dimensional cube Q n.

Let G be a simple graph without isolated vertices with vertex set V(G) and edge set E(G). A function f:E(G)?{−1,1} is said to be a signed star dominating function on G if ∑eE(v)f(e)≥1 for every vertex v of G, where E(v)={uvE(G)∣uN(v)}. A set {f1,f2,…,fd} of signed star dominating functions on G with the property that for each eE(G), is called a signed star dominating family (of functions) on G. The maximum number of functions in a signed star dominating family on G is the signed star domatic number of G, denoted by dSS(G).In this paper we study the properties of the signed star domatic number dSS(G). In particular, we determine the signed domatic number of some classes of graphs.

Let G be a finite and simple graph with vertex set V(G), and let f:V(G)→{−1,1} be a two-valued function. If ∑xN[v]f(x)≥1 for each vV(G), where N[v] is the closed neighborhood of v, then f is a signed dominating function on G. A set {f1,f2,…,fd} of signed dominating functions on G with the property that for each xV(G), is called a signed dominating family (of functions) on G. The maximum number of functions in a signed dominating family on G is the signed domatic number on G. In this paper, we investigate the signed domatic number of some circulant graphs and of the torus Cp×Cq.

Let G=(V,E) be a simple graph. A subset SV is a dominating set of G, if for any vertex uV-S, there exists a vertex vS such that uvE. The domination number of G, γ(G), equals the minimum cardinality of a dominating set. A Roman dominating function on graph G=(V,E) is a function f:V→{0,1,2} satisfying the condition that every vertex v for which f(v)=0 is adjacent to at least one vertex u for which f(u)=2. The weight of a Roman dominating function is the value f(V)=∑vVf(v). The Roman domination number of a graph G, denoted by γR(G), equals the minimum weight of a Roman dominating function on G. In this paper, for any integer k(2?k?γ(G)), we give a characterization of graphs for which γR(G)=γ(G)+k, which settles an open problem in [E.J. Cockayne, P.M. Dreyer Jr, S.M. Hedetniemi et al. On Roman domination in graphs, Discrete Math. 278 (2004) 11-22].
