Monodisperse polymelamine microcapsules were prepared by phase separation method. Control of microcapsule diameter was investigated using the uniform-sized oil-in-water emulsion droplets as the capsule core. The monodisperse emulsion droplets were prepared using the Shirasu porous glass (SPG) membrane emulsification technique. The effects of the diameter of the oil droplet and concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), which is a typical emulsifier in SPG membrane emulsification, on microencapsulation were investigated. The microcapsules were aggregated when oil droplets with small size were microencapsulated at high SDS concentration. To reduce the SDS concentration, the creamed emulsion was used. The monodisperse polymelamine microcapsules were successfully prepared by using the creamed emulsion. The microcapsule diameter was almost similar to the diameter of the encapsulated oil droplet. The coefficient of variation values was about 10% for all microcapsules prepared in this study. Control of microcapsule diameter was achieved in the range of 5–60 μm.  相似文献

Soy glycinin microcapsules by simple coacervation method   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Encapsulation of a dispersed oil phase (hexadecane) was realized by simple coacervation method using soy glycinin as the wall forming material. Suitable emulsification and coacervation conditions, that favor the formation of microcapsules wall, were identified and investigated. Mild acid (pH 2.0) and heat (55 degrees C) treatments of the reaction medium during the emulsification step enhanced significantly the deposition of coacervated glycinin around oil droplets. A pronounced correlation between glycinin concentration in the continuous phase, specific surface of the dispersed phase and the microencapsulation efficiency was also observed. Coacervation step study concerned the morphology and the stability of microcapsules. Controlled initiation of the coacervation, by slow readjustment of the pH, allowed a homogeneous precipitation of glycinin around oil droplets as well as the absence of aggregation phenomena. Since the morphology of microcapsules was considerably affected by a prolonged stirring of the reaction medium, the coacervation and reticulation time were optimized in order to preserve the homogeneity of the microcapsules size distribution and the microencapsulation efficiency.  相似文献

Abstract

The potential of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes as water‐in‐oil (W/O) emulsification devices was investigated to obtain uniformly sized droplets and to convert them into microcapsules and polymer particles via subsequent treatments. Uniform W/O emulsion droplets have not been achieved using glass membranes unless the membrane was rendered hydrophobic by treatment with silanes. If a PTFE membrane is capable of providing uniform droplets for a W/O emulsion, a coordinated membrane emulsification system can be established since glass membranes have been so successful for O/W (oil‐in‐water) emulsification. In order to examine the feasibility of PTFE membrane emulsification, O/W and W/O emulsion characteristics prepared using PTFE membranes were compared with those prepared by the conventional SPG (Shirasu porous glass) membrane emulsification method. A 3 wt.% sodium chloride solution was dispersed in kerosene using a low HLB surfactant. Effects of the membrane pore size, permeation pressure, and the type of emulsifiers and concentration on the droplet size and on the size distribution (CV, coefficient of variation) were investigated. The CV of the droplets was fairly low, and the average droplet size was correlated with the critical permeation pressure of the dispersed phase, revealing that the PTFE membrane could be used as a one‐pass membrane emulsification device. Low CV values were maintained with a Span 85 (HLB = 1.8) concentration, 0.2–5.0 wt.% and a range of HLB from 1.8–5.0. For a brief demonstration of practical applications, nylon‐6,10 microcapsules prepared by interfacial polycondensation and poly(acrylamide) hydrogels from inverse suspension polymerization are illustrated.  相似文献

Abstract

In this study, we are introducing a method that can effectively stabilize antioxidants in water‐in‐oil‐in‐water (W/O/W) double emulsions. Preliminarily, stable W/O/W double emulsions were produced by manipulating the characteristics of internal aqueous phase via two‐stage emulsification, resulting consequently in the formation of fine internal water droplets in the dispersed oil droplets. From conductivity measurements that can determine the elution amount of internal aqueous phase, it was confirmed that the double emulsion stability could be improved by treating the internal aqueous phase with a hydroxypropyl‐beta‐cyclodextrin. In this study, kojic acid, 5‐hydroxy‐2‐(hydroxymethyl)‐4‐pyrone was selected as a model antioxidant. The stabilization of kojic acid was attempted by locating it in the internal water droplets of the stable W/O/W double emulsions. The stability of kojic acid in the double emulsion system could be maintained at 90% for 10 weeks at high temperature. We believe that these stable W/O/W double emulsions could be used meaningfully as a carrier for many unstable antioxidants.  相似文献

Microspheres were prepared using a hydrocarbon-perfluorocarbon solvent extraction process. The effect of the physical properties and the emulsification conditions on the mean microsphere size was investigated. The viscosity of the dispersed and the continuous phase greatly affected the microsphere size. Smaller microspheres were produced at the same mixing intensity when the viscosity of the dispersed phase decreased. Increased continuous phase viscosity reduced the coalescenceof the droplets and hence smaller microspheres were produced. The mean microsphere size first decreased as the volume ratio of the dispersed phase to the continuous phase increased but upon further increase the mean microsphere size increased. The effect of the volume ratio on the microsphere size was linked to the surfactant concentration. The stability of the studied hydrocarbon-in-fluorocarbon emulsion is poor. One reason for the poor stability is the high density difference between the phases. The emulsion droplets were solidified by siphoning part of the emulsion in the fresh continuous phase, which extracted the solvent from the dispersed phase. The effect of emulsion transfer time between the emulsification and solidification steps on the particle size was studied but no significant effect was observedduring the controlled time interval.  相似文献

Formation of oil-in-water nano-emulsions has been studied in the water/C12E4/isohexadecane system by the phase inversion temperature emulsification method. Emulsification started at the corresponding hydrophilic-lipophilic balance temperature, and then the samples were quickly cooled to 25 degrees C. The influence of phase behavior on nano-emulsion droplet size and stability has been studied. Droplet size was determined by dynamic light scattering, and nano-emulsion stability was assessed, measuring the variation of droplet size as a function of time. The results obtained showed that the smallest droplet sizes were produced in samples where the emulsification started in a bicontinuous microemulsion (D) phase region or in a two-phase region consisting of a microemulsion (D) and a liquid crystalline phase (L(alpha)). Although the breakdown process of nano-emulsions could be attributed to the oil transference from the smaller to the bigger droplets, the increase in instability found with the increase in surfactant concentration may be related to the higher surfactant excess, favoring the oil micellar transport between the emulsion droplets.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to prepare alginate (ALG) microspheres with narrow size distribution using a combination of microchannel (MC) emulsification technique and external gelation method. ALG solution was dispersed as water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion droplets in iso-octane containing 5 wt% Span 85 as the immiscible continuous phase via MC emulsification technique using hydrophobic MC array. The MC array used in this experiment is a grooved-type MC consisting of 1070 channels fabricated on a 25 mm × 28 mm silicon microchip. The monodisperse W/O emulsion droplets generated from the MCs were in the mean particle diameter (dav) range of 18–22 μm and coefficient of variation (CV) of 5–26% at the ALG concentrations of 0.5–3.0 wt% and flow rates of 0.05–0.4 mL/h. The dav of the emulsion droplets hardly changed below a dispersed phase threshold flow rate of 0.2 mL/h but gradually became smaller when the dispersed phase concentration was increased. The resulting emulsion droplets were then congealed to form rigid ALG gel particles by reacting them with calcium chloride (CaCl2) solution. Gelation of the ALG droplets by calcium ion (Ca2+) resulted in shrinkage of its dav, forming uniformly sized ALG microspheres with an average diameter of 6.2 μm and a CV of below 10% at the ALG concentration of 3 wt%.  相似文献

Using oil/water/oil-type emulsion liquid membranes, batch wise extraction experiments are carried out to separate toluene from a mixture of toluene and n-heptane. In the separation process using emulsion liquid membranes, the internal phase polydispersity affects mass transport of a solute because under steady operating conditions, internal droplet size and size distribution are proportional to the interfacial area. The present study aims to assess the polydispersity character of the internal droplets of emulsion globules. In this paper, the important variables affecting dispersed drop sizes as well as internal droplets mean diameter and size distribution of the emulsion globule, including impeller speed during emulsification, surfactant concentration, volume ratio of surfactant solution, carrier concentration and composition of feed phase are systematically investigated.  相似文献

Experiments have been carried out to investigate the interfacial tension (IFT) and emulsification behaviors between Shengli crude oil and a novel organic alkali (OA). The dynamic IFT and minimum IFT are adopted to characterize the IFT behaviors; the microscopic method, Turbiscan stability index, separated water rate, and laser particle size analysis method are used to show the emulsification behaviors. The dynamic and minimum IFT both decrease continuously with the increase of OA concentration whether surfactant is added or not; because of the synergy of OA and surfactant, the minimum IFT will be reduced to the ultralow value. The synergy is also crucial for the crude oil emulsification. When OA and surfactant are used together, owing to the mosaic and cross-multiple adsorption of OA, surfactant and in situ soap at the interfacial film, the oil can be emulsified more easily, the quantity of emulsified droplets is higher, and the emulsion is more stable with OA concentration increases. The relationship of the minimum IFT and emulsification is investigated; it indicates that the emulsion stability improves, the degree of dispersed homogeneity of oil droplets increases, and the median diameter of emulsified oil droplets decreases with the decline of the minimum IFT.  相似文献

An attempt to evaluate the kinetically effective critical micelle concentration CMC of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in micellar solutions and in O/W emulsions at 40°C and pH 9 utilizing the pseudo first order rate constant of benzyl acetate hydrolysis was implemented. The critical micelle concentration of SDS in micellar solutions was determined by both surface tension measurements utilizing Wilhelmy plate technique and by rate constant of hydrolysis. Hydrolysis reaction of benzyl acetate was monitored in surfactant solutions as well as in o/w emulsions as a function of time. Emulsion droplets were controlled using microfluidizer 110 T and oily droplets were separated from the emulsion by ultracentrifugation at (11,500 rpm or 9,800 g) prior to analysis by high performance liquid chromatography. The value of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) in micellar solutions in the presence of benzyl acetate as determined from the Wilhelmy plate technique was 7.8 × 10?4 moles/L (CMC in micellar solution was 10 times lower than the value in literature due to use of buffer) while the CMC as determined from the kinetic study was 8.8 × 10?4 moles/L. In emulsion systems, using 5% mineral oil, the CMC value was 8.6 × 10?3 moles/L and at 10% oil, the value doubled to 1.73 × 10?2 moles/L. The above results indicate that kinetics can be used to determine CMC in micellar solutions and in o/w emulsions.  相似文献

The water-in-oil high internal phase emulsions were the subject of the study. The emulsions consisted of a super-cooled aqueous solution of inorganic salt as a dispersed phase and industrial grade oil as a continuous phase. The influence of the industrial grade oil type on a water-in-oil high internal phase emulsion stability was investigated. The stability of emulsions was considered in terms of the crystallization of the dispersed phase droplets (that are super-cooled aqueous salt solution) during ageing. The oils were divided into groups: one that highlighted the effect of oil/aqueous phase interfacial tension and another that investigated the effect of oil viscosity on the emulsion rheological properties and shelf-life. For a given set of experimental conditions the influence of oil viscosity for the emulsion stability as well as the oil/aqueous interfacial tension plays an important role. Within the frames of our experiment it was found that there are oil types characterized by optimal parameters: oil/aqueous phase interfacial tension being in the region of 19–24 mN/m and viscosity close to 3 mPa s; such oils produced the most stable high internal phase emulsions. It was assumed that the oil with optimal parameters kept the critical micelle concentration and surfactant diffusion rate at optimal levels allowing the formation of a strong emulsifier layer at the interface and at the same time creating enough emulsifier micelles in the inter-droplet layer to prevent the droplet crystallization.  相似文献

In this study, uniform-sized pH-sensitive quaternized chitosan microsphere was prepared by combining Shirasu porous glass (SPG) membrane emulsification technique and a novel thermal-gelation method. In this preparation process, the mixture of quaternized chitosan solution and alpha-beta-glycerophosphate (alpha-beta-GP) was used as water phase and dispersed in oil phase to form uniform W/O emulsion by SPG membrane emulsification technique. The droplets solidified into microspheres at 37 degrees C by thermal-gelation method. The whole process was simple and mild. The influence of process conditions on the property of prepared microspheres was investigated and the optimized preparation condition was obtained. As a result, the coefficient of variation (C.V.) of obtained microspheres diameters was below 15%. The obtained microsphere had porous structure and showed apparent pH-sensitivity. It dissolved rapidly in acid solution (pH 5) and kept stable in neutral solution (pH 7.4). The pH-sensitivity of microspheres also affected its drug release behavior. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model drug was encapsulated in microspheres, and it was released rapidly in acid solution and slowly in neutral medium. The novel quaternized chitosan microspheres with pH-sensitivity can be used as drug delivery system in the biomedical field, such as tumor-targeted drug carrier.  相似文献

We present a methodology to quantitatively determine the fraction of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) that partitions to the oil/water interface in oil-in-water macroemulsions and calculate the total interfacial area (TIA) through the novel use of filtration through nanoporous membranes. Ultrafiltration was carried out in centrifuge tubes having nanoporous filters with a 30,000 molecular weight cutoff (MWCO), so that emulsion droplets would not pass through, and only SDS (as monomers and micelles) that is in the bulk water phase (i.e., not at the interface) could pass through. The concentration of SDS in the filtrate was determined and used to calculate the TIA for each system. The mean droplet diameter of the emulsions was measured by light scattering. We analyzed the effects of total SDS concentration and oil chain length on the amount of SDS that partitions to the interface, the TIA, and the droplet diameter. The results showed that partitioning of SDS to the oil/water interface increases with increasing total SDS concentration in emulsion systems (i.e., the more SDS we add to the bulk solution, the more SDS partitions to the oil/water interface). However, the surface-to-bulk partition coefficient (i.e., the SDS concentration at the interface divided by the SDS concentration in the aqueous phase) remains the same over the entire concentration range (8-200 mM). The results showed a chain-length compatibility effect in that the minimum amount of SDS partitioned to the interface for C(12) oil. The droplet size measurements revealed a maximum size of droplets for C(12) oil. Penetration of oil molecules into SDS film at the interface has been proposed to account for the maximum droplet size and minimum partitioning of SDS at the oil/water interface for C(12) oil+SDS emulsion system. The TIA, as determined from our ultrafiltration method, was consistently two orders of magnitude greater than that calculated from the droplet size measured by light scattering. Possible explanations for this disparity are discussed.  相似文献

Oil-in-water nanoemulsions are finding increasing use as delivery systems to encapsulate lipophilic bioactive components in personal care and pharmaceutical. The aim of this study was to optimize the composition and stability of ceramide-2 nanoemulsions. The nanoemulsions were prepared by high pressure homogenizer emulsification method using sodium dilauramidoglutamide lysine (DLGL) as surfactant. Results showed that the oil type and concentration had an appreciable impact on the particle size and stability of the ceramide-2 enriched nanoemulsions. The presence of the aliphatic alcohol altered the curvature of the surfactant molecular and increased the stability of nanoemulsions. The zeta potential of nanoemulsions decreased with the addition of cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (1631), which weakens the electrostatic interactions between droplets and lowers the stability of the nanoemulsions. The particle size decreased with increasing concentrations of both sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cocoamidopropyl betaine (CAB). The variation of zeta potential with SDS and CAB was insignificant, which was attributed to the high zeta potential value resulted from anionic gemini surfactant DLGL. The instability mechanism of nanoemulsions was the Ostwald ripening. This study demonstrated that the addition of aliphatic alcohol, SDS, or CAB was beneficial to the stability of ceramide-2 nanoemulsions and decreased the Ostwald ripening rate.  相似文献

Microchannel (MC) emulsification is a novel technique for preparing monodispersed emulsions. This study demonstrates preparing water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) emulsions using MC emulsification. The W/O/W emulsions were prepared by a two-step emulsification process employing MC emulsification as the second step. We investigated the behavior of internal water droplets penetrating the MCs. Using decane, ethyl oleate, and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) as oil phases, we observed successful MC emulsification and prepared monodispersed oil droplets that contained small water droplets. MC emulsification was possible using triolein as the oil phase, but polydispersed oil droplets were formed from some of the channels. No leakage of the internal water phase was observed during the MC emulsification process. The internal water droplets penetrated the MC without disruption, even though the internal water droplets were larger than the resulting W/O/W emulsion droplets. The W/O/W emulsion entrapment yield was measured fluorometrically and found to be 91%. The mild action of droplet formation based on spontaneous transformation led to a high entrapment yield during MC emulsification.  相似文献

The semi real-time observations of oil-in-water emulsification process in a Kenics static mixer were performed using a novel in situ visualization system. The homogenization processes and emulsion characteristics were analyzed using images taken periodically in fixed time intervals during the emulsification process. Morphological evolution of droplets was monitored and the mechanism of droplet formation was studied, both experimentally and theoretically. A wide range of dispersed phase concentration as well as surfactant concentration were used in the experiments and their impacts on emulsion characteristics were determined. Different droplet formation mechanisms occurred during the experimental results are presented. The relationship between droplet sizes, flow rate, surfactant concentration, and other impact factors was visually shown, and their role in controlling the emulsification process was revealed. The minimum droplet size obtained from the dispersed phase in emulsions was shown to be perfectly monitored and controlled by this technique.  相似文献

The interaction in the system of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution and AB-17 highly basic anion-exchange resins in OH and Cl forms were considered, and the distribution coefficients (K d) of the substance in the resin-solution ion exchange system were calculated. It was found that K d decreases with increasing concentration of the initial solution, reaching a maximum value at the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of SDS. The effective diffusion coefficients of the surfactant in the anion-exchange resin phase were calculated; based on the IR spectroscopy data, the mechanism of SDS absorption was proposed.  相似文献

The emulsion templating of ordered colloidal microsphere assemblies by Manoharan et al. involves a consolidation process where dispersed phase fluid is transported from droplets into a continuous phase. Consolidation can be approximated as a diffusion process with moving boundaries. The kinetics of consolidation are investigated here by following droplet shrinkage with time as a prelude to understanding rate effects on assembly structure. Consolidation kinetics are influenced by liquid diffusivity, the number of colloidal particles in a droplet, and the surfactant concentration. While surfactant exhibits little effect well below its critical micelle concentration (CMC) value, it significantly slows consolidation above the CMC. For a specific continuous phase (i.e., silicone oil and fluorinated silicone oil), with proper scalings, the droplet size shrinks with time following a power law independent of droplet diameter, surfactant concentrations, and particle number concentration. The power law exponent varies from 1/2 to 2/3 with different continuous oil phases as a result of concentration and interfacial effects. This study leads to an improved understanding of colloidal microstructure development at interfaces that can be applied in novel materials synthesis and drug delivery areas.  相似文献

A procedure for the preparation of calcium alginate nanoparticles in the aqueous phase of water-in-oil (W/O) nanoemulsions was developed. The emulsions were produced from mixtures of the nonionic surfactant tetraethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C(12)E(4)), decane, and aqueous solutions of up to 2 wt % sodium alginate by means of the phase inversion temperature (PIT) emulsification method. This method allows the preparation of finely dispersed emulsions without a large input of mechanical energy. With alginate concentrations of 1-2 wt % in the aqueous phase, emulsions showed good stability against Ostwald ripening and narrow, monomodal distributions of droplets with radii <100 nm. Gelation of the alginate was induced by the addition of aqueous CaCl(2) to the emulsions under stirring, and particles formed were collected using a simple procedure based on extraction of the surfactant on addition of excess oil. The final particles were characterized using cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). They were found to be essentially spherical with a homogeneous interior, and their size was similar to that of the initial emulsion droplets. The herein presented "low-energy" method for preparation of biocompatible nanoparticles has the potential to be used in various applications, e.g., for the encapsulation of sensitive biomacromolecules.  相似文献
