We study the class of Banach algebra-valued -homogeneous polynomials generated by the powers of linear operators. We compare it with the finite type polynomials. We introduce a topology on similar to the weak topology, to clarify the features of these polynomials.

Suppose is a block of a group algebra with cyclic defect group. We calculate the Hochschild cohomology ring of , giving a complete set of generators and relations. Next, for each positive integer we construct an -dimensional metrizable compactum such that is approximately -th root closed for any . We obtain some characterizations for the class of homogeneous groups, those homogeneous groups such that, for pure in every has a lifting to a quasi-endomorphism of An irreducible group is if and only if every pure subgroup of each of its strongly indecomposable quasi-summands is strongly indecomposable. A group is if and only if every endomorphism of is an integral multiple of an automorphism. We consider the polynomials obtained from the little -Jacobi polynomials by inserting a discrete mass at in the orthogonality measure. We show that for , the polynomials are eigensolutions of a linear -difference operator of order with polynomial coefficients. This provides a -analog of results recently obtained for the Krall polynomials.

We investigate the problem of the uniqueness of the extension of -homogeneous polynomials in Banach spaces. We show in particular that in a nonreflexive Banach space that admits contractive projection of finite rank of at least dimension 2, for every there exists an -homogeneous polynomial on that has infinitely many extensions to . We also prove that under some geometric conditions imposed on the norm of a complex Banach lattice , for instance when satisfies an upper -estimate with constant one for some , any -homogeneous polynomial on attaining its norm at with a finite rank band projection , has a unique extension to its bidual . We apply these results in a class of Orlicz sequence spaces.

A semivariety is a class of Banach algebras , for which there exists a family of homogeneous laws such that is precisely the class of all Banach algebras , for which there exists 0$"> such that for all homogeneous polynomials , , where . However, there is no variety between the variety of all -algebras and the variety of all -algebras, which can be defined by homogeneous laws alone. So the theory of semivarieties and the theory of varieties differ significantly. In this paper we shall construct uncountable chains and antichains of semivarieties which are not varieties.

We generalize the classical theorem of Serre on the non-triviality of infinitely many homotopy groups of -connected finite CW-complexes to CW-complexes where the cohomology groups either grow too fast or do not grow faster than a certain rate given by connectivity. For example, this result can be applied to iterated suspensions of finite Postnikov systems and certain spaces with finitely generated cohomology ring. In particular, we obtain an independent, short proof of a theorem of R. Levi on the non-triviality of -invariants associated to finite perfect groups. Another application concerns spaces where the cohomology grows like a polynomial algebra on generators in dimension , , for a fixed number . We also consider spectra where we prove a non-triviality result in the case of fast growing cohomology groups.

Over a field of any characteristic, for a commutative associative algebra , and for a commutative subalgebra of , the vector space which consists of polynomials of elements in with coefficients in and which is regarded as operators on forms naturally an associative algebra. It is proved that, as an associative algebra, is simple if and only if is -simple. Suppose is -simple. Then, (a) is a free left -module; (b) as a Lie algebra, the subquotient is simple (except for one case), where is the center of . The structure of this subquotient is explicitly described. This extends the results obtained by Su and Zhao.

In this note, we explore commutativity up to a factor for bounded operators and in a complex Hilbert space. Conditions on possible values of the factor are formulated and shown to depend on spectral properties of the operators. Commutativity up to a unitary factor is considered. A ring is said to be coprimely packed if whenever is an ideal of and is a set of maximal ideals of with , then for some . Let be a ring and be the localization of at its set of monic polynomials. We prove that if is a Noetherian normal domain, then the ring is coprimely packed if and only if is a Dedekind domain with torsion ideal class group. Moreover, this is also equivalent to the condition that each proper prime ideal of is a set theoretic complete intersection. A similar result is also proved when is either a Noetherian arithmetical ring or a Bézout domain of dimension one.
