The dielectric properties of cubic spinel-type LiMn2O4, used as cathode material in lithium ion secondary batteries, are studied by analyzing the low-loss region of the electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) spectrum in a transmission electron microscope. A comparison of experimental EELS spectra and ab initio density-functional theory calculations (WIEN2k code) within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) is presented. The origins of interband transitions are identified in the electronic band structure, by calculating the partial imaginary part of the dielectric function and the partial density of states of Li, Mn and O. Good agreement with experimental spectra is observed which allowed interpreting main features of the EELS spectrum.  相似文献

The dielectric properties of V2O5 nanofibers, synthesized by the electrospinning method, are studied by analyzing the low-loss region of the electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a transmission electron microscope. A comparison of experimental EELS spectra and ab initio density-functional theory calculations (WIEN2k code) within the Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) is presented, having found an excellent agreement between them. Although the experimental EELS has been acquired for the nanoparticles composing the fibers, and numerical calculations were carried out for bulk material, agreement between experimental and calculated results shows that no difference exists between the electronic structure in calculated bulk material and the nanoparticles. Furthermore, our results from EELS confirm that we accomplished the expected crystalline phase. The origins of interband transitions are identified in the electronic band structure by calculating the partial imaginary part of the dielectric function and the partial density of states.  相似文献

Using high energy-electron energy loss spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and synchrotron-radiation-based x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we provide the first experimental evidence that Russell-Saunders (LS) coupling fails for the 5f states of Pu. These results support the assumption that only the use of jj or intermediate coupling is appropriate for the 5f states of Pu. High energy-electron energy loss spectroscopy experiments were performed by use of a transmission electron microscope and are coupled with image and diffraction data; therefore, the measurements are completely phase specific.  相似文献

The dielectric properties of nanostructured wurtzite-type ZnO are studied by analyzing the low-loss region of the electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a transmission electron microscope. Characteristic peaks at about 12 and 32 eV in the imaginary part of the dielectric function shift to lower energies as particle size decreases. A comparison of experimental EELS spectra and ab initio density-functional theory calculations (WIEN2k code) within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), GGA+U and modified Becke-Johnson (mBJ) is presented. The origins of interband transitions are identified in the electronic band structure by calculating the partial imaginary part of the dielectric function and the partial density of states of Zn and O.  相似文献

Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in the transmission electron microscope (TEM) is explored as a useful characterization technique in the study of carbonization and graphitization of organic precursors. A model series of carbon materials was prepared from highly graphitizable petroleum pitch heat treated in the range 200–2730°C. Initial characterization was performed using the established techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD), He pycnometry, TEM, electron diffraction and high-resolution lattice imaging (HREM). EELS in the TEM was then examined. Two routes are presented to quantify the change in the proportion of sp 2 type hybridization accompanying the heat treatment as the material transforms to the graphitic state. Both routes suggest an initial relative sp 2 content of ~70%, rapidly increasing to ~90% during mesophase development and carbonization, and then slowly increasing to 100% during graphitization. The peak position of the bulk valence plasmon (π?+?σ) is shown to be an excellent measure of the degree of graphitic character, and its fundamental dependence upon sample density (ρ) is confirmed. The appearance and definition of features within the core loss region representing the density of unoccupied σ* states are demonstrated to be an excellent measure of the extent of order. Finally, a method is established by which to extract the C–C bond length from core loss EELS spectra with an accuracy of ±0.1?pm. This method suggests an average bond length of 1.44?Å in samples with low heat treatment temperatures, decreasing to the theoretical length of 1.42?Å as both the heteroatom content and proportion of non-sp 2-type hybridized carbon atoms decrease.  相似文献

The presented scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) results show the strong reaction of Cr and V with the graphitic walls of MWCNTs. For Vanadium, an interfacial VC layer could be observed at the interface between VN and MWCNTs, when the samples were heated in situ to 750 °C. Knowledge about this interfacial VC layer is important for the formation of VN-MWCNT hybrid materials, used in supercapacitor electrodes, often synthesized at high temperatures. Chromium reacts at 500 °C with the MWCNTs to form Cr3C2 and in some cases, dissolved the MWCNT completely. Together with the previously published results about the interaction of MWCNTs with Cu (no interaction) and Ni (a slight rehybridisation trend for the outermost MWCNT-wall observed with EELS) (Ilari et al., 2015) the influence of the valence d-orbital occupancy of 3d transition metals on the interaction strength with CNTs is shown experimentally. For a transition metal to form chemical bonds towards CNT-walls, unoccupied states in its valence d-orbitals are needed. While Ni (2 unoccupied states) interacts only slightly, Cr (5 unoccupied states) and V (7 unoccupied states) react much stronger and can dissolve the MWCNTs, at least partially.  相似文献

KLL Auger spectra excited by electrons with energies in the 30–35 keV range of Fe, Cu and Ge films were measured, using thin free-standing films. It was possible to obtain spectra with an energy resolution of about 1 eV. The observed spectra can not be described satisfactorily by just the multiplet splitting of the final state as calculated for an isolated atom. Additional features, due in part to intrinsic (shake satellites) and in part to extrinsic (energy loss of the escaping electron) processes formed a large fraction on the observed intensities. In particular a number of distinct satellite structures that are not predicted by the atomic Auger process are observed. For Fe and Cu the satellite peaks can be explained in terms of shake-up processes from the 3d5/2–4d5/2 states. Similar satellite structures observed in Ge are partly attributed to plasmon creation and partly to shake-up processes. It is demonstrated that both the thickness dependence of the observed intensity distributions and transmission electron energy loss measurements contain invaluable information for the interpretation of these spectra.  相似文献

The dielectric properties of commercial TiC, ZrC and HfC powders were determined by analyzing the low loss region of the EELS spectrum in a transmission electron microscope. From these data, the optical joint density of states (OJDS) were obtained by Kramers–Kronig analysis. As maxima observed in the OJDS spectra are assigned to interband transitions across the energy gap, these spectra can be interpreted on the basis of existing energy-band calculations. Comparison between experimental results and theory shows good agreement.  相似文献

Abstract

The temperature dependent growth of He bubbles in Al films implanted at room temperature to various He concentrations is investigated by electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). EELS reveals even the weakest changes in He density within the bubbles by measuring the pressure shift of the He 11S0?21P1 transition. This is applied to investigate the mechanisms driving the growth of bubbles in the temperature range 20°C ? T ? 500°C. For T?200°C indication is found that bubbles relax by emission of interstitial dislocation loops. At higher temperatures bubble migration and coalescence under absorption of thermal vacancies is evident. The final state is characterized by large cavities filled with He at low pressure as evidenced by the detection of the atomic He series.  相似文献

Plutonium-enriched layer has been observed in corroded spent uranium oxide fuel (CSNF). These Pu-enriched regions were examined with analytical transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). The enriched region also contained U, Am, Ru, Zr, but only minor enrichment of rare earth elements. The Pu, possibly as Pu(V) according to EELS measurements, was dispersed within re-precipitated uranium oxide (identified as U3O8) nano-crystals between U(VI) secondary phases and the CSNF surface. The U, Pu, and Am enrichment was observed in the corrosion products with tests on different nuclear fuels. This may have implications for the long-term behavior of CSNF under storage in a geologic waste repository. Furthermore, there may be an increased potential for the generation of Pu-bearing colloids from this type of weathered CSNF.  相似文献

This paper examines the problems associated with analysis of low levels of neptunium in a uranium matrix with electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) on the transmission electron microscope (TEM). The detection of neptunium in a matrix of uranium can be impeded by the occurrence of a plural scattering event from uranium (U-M5 + U-O4,5) that results in severe overlap on the Np-M5 edge at 3665 eV. Low levels of Np (1600–6300 ppm) can be detected in a uranium solid, uranophane [Ca(UO2)2(SiO3OH)2(H2O)5], by confirming that the energy gap between the Np-M5 and Np-M4 edges is at 184 eV and showing that the M4/M5 ratio for the neptunium is smaller than that for uranium. The Richardson–Lucy deconvolution method was applied to energy-loss spectral images and was shown to increase the signal to noise ratio.  相似文献

Changes in the dielectric properties during the thermochromic transition of commercial VO2 powders were determined in situ, by analyzing the low-loss region of the electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) spectra in a transmission electron microscope at room temperature (insulator phase) and 100 °C (metallic phase). A comparison of experimental EELS spectra and ab initio density-functional theory calculations (WIEN2k code) within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) is presented. A characteristic peak around 5.6 eV appears in the energy-loss function in metallic phase, which is absent in insulator phase. The origin of the characteristic peak is analyzed by means of energy-band structure calculations.  相似文献

The dielectric properties of LiMn2O4, LiMn1.6Ti0.4O4 and LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 powders, synthesized by sol-gel method, were determined by analyzing the low-loss region of the electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) spectrum in a transmission electron microscope. From these data, the optical joint density of states (OJDS) was obtained by Kramers-Kronig analysis. Since maxima observed in the OJDS spectra are assigned to interband transitions above the Fermi level, these spectra can be interpreted on the basis of calculated density of states (DOS), carried out with the CASTEP code. Experimental and theoretical results are in good agreement.  相似文献

A first principles calculation is carried out on a typical heavy fermion system-CeCu2Si2 by using a many-body method combing density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) along with the on-site Coulomb repulsion (represented by the Hubbard U parameter) for capturing the electronic correlation due to the incompletely filled Ce 4f orbitals. The results establish that the average occupation of Ce 4f electrons nf is about 1.02 (mainly 4f1 atomic configuration), close to the nominal occupation in pure Ce metal and in good agreement with the spectrum function in this work and the available experimental observations. The imaginary part of the impurity Green function indicates that the Ce 4f j = 5/2 and j = 7/2 states have metallic and insulating behavior, respectively. The dehybridization between the Ce 4f orbitals and ligand valence orbitals in the vicinity of the Fermi level is responsible for the localized 4f state and heavy fermionic behavior in this system.  相似文献

Imaging the doping elements is critical for understanding the photocatalytic activity of doped TiO2 thin film. But it is still a challenge to characterize the interactions between the dopants and the TiO2 lattice at the atomic level. Here, we use high angle annular dark-field/annular bright-field scanning transmission electron microscope (HAADF/ABF-STEM) combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) to directly image the individual Cr atoms doped in anatase TiO2(001) thin film from [100] direction. The Cr dopants, which are clearly imaged through the atomic-resolution EELS mappings while can not be seen by HADDF/ABF-STEM, occupy both the substitutional sites of Ti atoms and the interstitial sites of TiO2 matrix. Most of them preferentially locate at the substitutional sites of Ti atoms. These results provide the direct evidence for the doping structure of Cr-doped A-TiO2 thin film at the atomic level and also prove the EELS mapping is an excellent technique for characterizing the doped materials.  相似文献

We demonstrate a standard‐free method to retrieve compositional information in Alx In1–xN thin films by measuring the bulk plasmon energy (Ep), employing electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). Two series of samples were grown by magnetron sputter epitaxy (MSE) and metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE), which together cover the full com‐ positional range 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. Complementary compositional measurements were obtained using Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) and the lattice parameters were obtained by X‐ray diffraction (XRD). It is shown that Ep follows a linear relation with respect to composition and lattice parameter between the alloying elements from AlN to InN allowing for straightforward compositional analysis. The resolution of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) is limited by delocalization of inelastic electron scattering rather than probe size in an aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). In this study, we present an experimental quantification of EELS spatial resolution using chemically modulated 2×(LaMnO(3))/2×(SrTiO(3)) and 2×(SrVO(3))/2×(SrTiO(3)) superlattices by measuring the full width at half maxima (FWHM) of integrated Ti M(2,3), Ti L(2,3), V L(2,3), Mn L(2,3), La N(4,5), La N(2,3) La M(4,5) and Sr L(3) edges over the superlattices. The EELS signals recorded using large collection angles are peaked at atomic columns. The FWHM of the EELS profile, obtained by curve-fitting, reveals a systematic trend with the energy loss for the Ti, V, and Mn edges. However, the experimental FWHM of the Sr and La edges deviates significantly from the observed experimental tendency.  相似文献

Many-body effects in core-level photoemission and core-level photoabsorption are discussed for rare-earth systems, especially for Ce and La compounds, both in metallic and insulating forms. Emphasis is put on effects of metallic mixed valency and insulating covalency of 4f electrons on these spectra. For the insulating compound CeO2, detailed analyses of the 3d core photoemission (3d-XPS) and the 2p core photoabsorption (L3-XAS) are presented by using the impurity Anderson model with a filled valence band. In order to give a consistent interpretation for 3d-XPS and L3-XAS, it is shown to be essential to take account of the Coulomb interactions U fd (between a 4f electron and a photoexcited 5d electron in the L3-XAS) and -U dc (between the 5d electron and a core hole), in addition to -U fc (between the 4f electron and the core hole). Discussions are given on the physical information derived from the analysis, on similarities and differences in spectral features between insulating and metallic systems, and also on some related topics.  相似文献

Spectroscopic studies in the superdeformed shape isomer of 240Pu using γ-spectroscopy, conversion electron spectroscopy and transmission resonance spectroscopy have been performed. In a high-resolution and high-efficiency γ-spectroscopy experiment the out-of-band decays of several excited superdeformed rotational sequences with K=2? and 1? could be identified together with evidence for a weakly populated 0? octupole band. Surprisingly, no low-lying collective quadrupole excitations could be observed. Complementary information could be obtained in conversion electron measurements in coincidence with isomeric fission, resulting in the first identification of the lowest ß-vibrational K=0+ band. For all rotational bands the variation of the moment of inertia with spin could be studied. A predominant population of negative parity states in the second well could be observed, which can be explained by the selective population and depopulation of the second minimum. Complementary transmission resonance measurements have been performed, yielding new information on the fine structure of high-lying (ß-)vibrational multi-phonon states. A new method could be established to determine the excitation energy of the fission isomer ground state from measured level densities.  相似文献

The electron energy loss spectra (EELS) of a pure metallic lanthanum surface and variations in these spectra at the initial stages of surface oxidation were studied. The measurements were performed at primary-electron beam energies E p from 200 to 1000 eV. A very pronounced peak at a loss energy of about 7.5 eV arises due to transitions from the La4d electronic states of the valence band into the empty La4f electronic states of the conduction band at 5.0–5.5 eV above the Fermi level. Marked changes are observed in the EELS during the oxidation of lanthanum: the peak at an energy of 7.5 eV disappears, and the peak at 13.5 eV corresponding to bulk collective energy loss in lanthanum oxide becomes more pronounced. The results obtained are discussed in terms of the electronic structure of lanthanum and lanthanum oxide.  相似文献
