The origin of the equilibrium paradoxes of special relativity is here analysed. We show that static forces, as defined by Hooke's law, do not transform in the same way as the usual dynamical forces, thus giving rise to the paradoxes. This inconsistency justifies the present search for alternative theories such as the modern ether theories. Some crucial tests are proposed.1.
