Summary By fractionating the initial water-soluble polysaccharide from the tuberous roots ofEremurus altaicus, a homogeneous naturally acetylated glucomannan with a molecular weight of 108,000–120,000 has been isolated.On the basis of the results of periodate oxidation and methylation and a study of the products of partial cleavage of the glycosidic bonds, the structure of a repeating heptasaccharide section of the chain consisting of -14-linked D-glucopyranose (2 moles) and D-mannopyranose (5 moles) residues has been established. The glucomannan apparently contains 95–100 such sections. Conclusions 1. When DL-[2–14C] tryptophan, sodium [2–14C] pyrotartrate, sodium [14/C]-formate, and universally labeled L-[14C] glutamic acid were introduced through the root system intoCarex brevicollis DC, active brevicolline was obtained.2. Tryptophan and sodium pyrotartrate are precursors of the -carboline moiety of the brevicolline molecule, and sodium formate is a precursor of the N-methyl grouping.3. Conclusions The cardenolide and coumarin composition ofC. varia L. and the closely related speciesC. hyrcana Pril.,C. cretica L., andC. orientalis Müll have been investigated. A new C20-diterpene alkaloid of the coryphine type has been isolated from the plantAconitum coreanum (Levl.) Rapaics, and it has been called coryphidine. Its structure has been established on the basis of an analysis of IR and1H and13C NMR spectra. This is the second diterpene alkaloid having a hexahydro-N-methylindole fragment at C-17. The steroid glycoside fraction ofIsostichopus badionotus, consisting of a mixture of D-xylosides of steroid alcohols, has been isolated by column chromatography on silica gel. The mixture of aglycones obtained after acid hydrolysis was separated with the aid of argentation chromatography into several fractions. The isomerization of 5-vinyl-2-norbornene (1) has been studied in the presence of Co (R1-COCHCOR2)x–Et6–yAl2Cly (x=2, 3; y=2–4) catalytic systems. Co(acac)2–AlEt3 and Co(acac)3–AlEt3 systems isomerize1 to 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene (2), whereas the Co(PhCOCHCOPh)2–AlEt3 system selectively forms 3-vinylnortricyclene (3).2 is always accompanied by formation of ethylidene norbornane (4).
