Large-Eddy Simulations were performed to study the flashback-induced flame shape transition of a lean premixed M flame in a staged liquid-fuelled aeronautical lean-burner, as observed experimentally. The BIMER combustor is a Lean Premixed Prevapourised (LPP) burner composed of two stages, each with its own injector and swirler: the main outer stage, called multipoint, uses jet-in-crossflow injection to achieve the LPP regime, while the central stage, called pilot, uses a pressure swirl injector to create a hollow cone spray to stabilise the flame. During LPP operation, this M flame presents a strong acoustic activity, promoting a periodic flashback of its leading edge. When, aiming to stabilise the flame, the pilot injection is increased and the multipoint injection decreased, the oscillating leading edge (due to the longitudinal acoustic perturbations) attaches to the pilot spray, changing the flame into a Tulip shape. Two phenomena were identified as being the most relevant causes of this flame shape transition. First, the leading edge position and the thermoacoustic instability amplitude are directly linked to the combustion chamber final temperature. The higher the temperature in the chamber, the more upstream the leading edge stabilises, and the higher the acoustic oscillation amplitude, both increasing the risk of a successful flashback. Second, the injection regime with high pilot injection allows the leading edge to attach to the pilot spray, as the flame only transitions when the pilot spray is sufficiently high. The higher the pilot fuel flow, the higher the amount of fuel sprayed in the critical region where the flame might attach for a transition to the Tulip shape. Therefore, as the change in injection regime is the main mechanism lean staged burners use to reduce emissions while increasing operability, this works shows that an M flame is unsuitable to such burners with similar aerodynamic topology and properties.  相似文献

Ignition of the second stage in a lab-scale sequential combustor is investigated experimentally. A fuel mixing section between jet-in-cross-flow injection and the second stage chamber allows the fuel and vitiated, hot cross-flow to partially mix upstream of the main heat release zone. The focus of the present work is on the transient ignition process leading to a stable flame in the second stage. High-speed OH-PLIF as well as OH chemiluminescence imaging is applied to obtain complementary planar and line-of-sight integrated information on the ignition. We find experimental evidence for the co-existence of two regimes dominating the chamber ignition, i.e. autoignition and flame propagation. As the mass flow of the dilution air injected downstream of the first stage is increased (i.e. mixing temperatures in the fuel mixing section are decreased), we transition from an autoignition to a flame propagation dominated regime. Hysteresis in the ignition behavior is observed indicating that the first stage in a sequential combustor may be operated at leaner conditions than required for ignition of the second stage. The time traces of integral heat release obtained simultaneously with a photomultiplier tube show distinct features depending on the dominating regime, which is important for high-pressure testing with limited optical access.  相似文献

Combustion instabilities depend on a variety of parameters and operating conditions. It is known, especially in the field of liquid rocket propulsion, that the pressure loss of an injector has an effect on its dynamics and on the coupling between the combustion chamber and the fuel manifold. However, its influence is not well documented in the technical literature dealing with gas turbine combustion dynamics. Effects of changes in this key design parameter are investigated in the present article by testing different swirlers at constant thermal power on a broad range of injection velocities in a well controlled laboratory scale single injector swirled combustor using liquid fuel. The objective is to study the impact of injection pressure losses on the occurrence and level of combustion instabilities by making use of a set of injectors having nearly the same outlet velocity profiles, the same swirl number and that establish flames that are essentially identical in shape. It is found that combustion oscillations appear on a wider range of operating conditions for injectors with the highest pressure loss, but that the pressure fluctuations caused by thermoacoustic oscillations are greatest when the injector head loss is low. Four types of instabilities coupled by two modes may be distinguished: the first group features a lower frequency, arises when the injector pressure loss is low and corresponds to a weakly coupled chamber-plenum mode. The second group appears in the form of a constant amplitude limit cycle, or as bursts at a slightly higher frequency and is coupled by a chamber mode. Spontaneous switching between these two types of instabilities is also observed in a narrow domain.  相似文献

Prior studies about liquid fuel combustion in a vitiated air environment have shown increased combustion efficiency with reduced NOx, CO, and soot emissions. The concept of lean azimuthal flame (LEAF), which can be associated to the latter combustion mode, is based on opposed injections of air and liquid fuel sprays in an axisymmetric chamber with a central outlet, which can result in a highly turbulent toroidal reaction zone. The mixture of fresh air and hot combustion products of each spray provides a vitiated cross-flow configuration to the next spray distributed along the chamber circumference, leading to ignition and sequential combustion of the sprays by the others. The present paper deals with a LEAF combustor with air-assisted spray atomization, which has not been investigated so far. The combustor is fueled with Jet A-1 and operated from 15 to 25 kW with variations in the atomization-air to liquid mass flow ratio (ALR). This study focuses on the flame topology transitions as a function of atomizer ALR. Experimental results based on flame chemiluminescence and OH planar laser-induced fluorescence show two flame topologies: tubular and LEAF topology for ratio of 2 and 4, respectively (denoted ALR2 and ALR4). The spray Mie scattering indicates a significant presence of unburnt droplets for ALR2, whereas quick evaporation is observed for ALR4 cases. In this paper, we propose and validate a basic model based on the spray droplet size distribution, and the evaporation and convection timescales, which are the prominent factors governing the flame topology. Indeed, for ALR2, the evaporation timescale is longer than the convective timescale, which causes incomplete spray evaporation and insufficient vitiated environment, leading to a tubular flame topology and preventing a LEAF to develop. In contrast, for ALR4, the spray evaporation timescales are smaller than the convective timescales, which aids the LEAF topology.  相似文献

Combustion of kerosene fuel spray has been numerically simulated in a laboratory scale combustor geometry to predict soot and the effects of thermal radiation at different swirl levels of primary air flow. The two-phase motion in the combustor is simulated using an Eulerian–Lagragian formulation considering the stochastic separated flow model. The Favre-averaged governing equations are solved for the gas phase with the turbulent quantities simulated by realisable k–? model. The injection of the fuel is considered through a pressure swirl atomiser and the combustion is simulated by a laminar flamelet model with detailed kinetics of kerosene combustion. Soot formation in the flame is predicted using an empirical model with the model parameters adjusted for kerosene fuel. Contributions of gas phase and soot towards thermal radiation have been considered to predict the incident heat flux on the combustor wall and fuel injector. Swirl in the primary flow significantly influences the flow and flame structures in the combustor. The stronger recirculation at high swirl draws more air into the flame region, reduces the flame length and peak flame temperature and also brings the soot laden zone closer to the inlet plane. As a result, the radiative heat flux on the peripheral wall decreases at high swirl and also shifts closer to the inlet plane. However, increased swirl increases the combustor wall temperature due to radial spreading of the flame. The high incident radiative heat flux and the high surface temperature make the fuel injector a critical item in the combustor. The injector peak temperature increases with the increase in swirl flow mainly because the flame is located closer to the inlet plane. On the other hand, a more uniform temperature distribution in the exhaust gas can be attained at the combustor exit at high swirl condition.  相似文献

This experimental study elucidates the unsteady dynamics of flame-flow interactions during unique thermoacoustic instability (TI) and the transition mechanism from stable combustion to TI for lean-premixed hydrogen turbulent jet flames in a low-swirl combustor (LSC), where a swirler assembly consists of an unswirled central region (CR) and an annular swirler region (SR). Simultaneous 200-kHz pressure fluctuation p’ measurements and 10-kHz OH* chemiluminescence imaging, as well as 40-kHz stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) and two-dimensional PIV measurements for steady-state and transient data acquisitions, respectively, were conducted. The SPIV was performed in multiple planes to explore three-dimensional velocity fields. During TI, periodic flashback was possibly caused by significant axial velocity oscillations, resulting in the local mixture velocity falling below the turbulent flame speed. The large-scale vortex ring generated by the velocity oscillations caused axisymmetric radial velocity Vr oscillations with switching signs during the TI period. Similar to a typical low-swirl flow, the positive Vr away from the combustor axis created diverging flow, whereas unlike the typical flowfield, the negative Vr toward the combustor axis generated converging flow while flattening the axial velocity distributions, which was the signature phenomenon for this TI. Using the transient data and dynamic mode decomposition, variations in delay times between the mixture injection and its convection to a region with positive local Rayleigh indices were investigated. During stable combustion, the mixture jet from the SR predominantly induced thermoacoustic coupling (TC). As the combustion transitioned into the TI, the mixture jet from the CR began to induce TC and, eventually, achieved predominance in inducing TC during fully evolved TI. The transition from the SR jet- into CR jet-dominant TI arising from the dynamic flame-flow interactions resulted from the inherent physical characteristics of hydrogen flames, thereby yielding the larger p’ amplitude compared to typical TIs.  相似文献

This paper presents a study of supersonic jets formed by approaches that are new for cold spray technique: the main flow is swirled, the nozzles with permeable profiles and with exit slots on the supersonic section are engineered. The flow swirling achieved in the nozzle prechamber retains downstream to substrate surface. The system of vortices created within the permeable nozzles changes the shock wave features of the overexpanded jet and the geometry of the bow shock wave ahead of the substrate surface. These new features of flow may affect particle motion and particlesubstrate interaction under the conditions of cold spray process; this offers tools for obtaining the necessary shape of a spray spot.  相似文献

Vortical and thermal structures of non-premixed propane flame in a bluff-body burner are studied experimentally in the transition from laminar to turbulent flow. In particular, we focus attention on the effect of annular air flow on the flame. The small-scale inner vortices inside the flame is stimulated by the annular air flow, and outside the flame, small eddies due to turbulence rather than the large-scale outer vortices due to thermal buoyancy become dominant with increasing air velocity. The interrelation between the vortical and thermal structures is analyzed by looking at the frequency spectrum and probability density function of temperature fluctuations.  相似文献

A series of experiments have been completed which use holographic interferometry to visualise a propane flame. The flame was produced by a 0·1 m diameter combustor, which swirled the flow to maximise its burning effeciency. The interferometric fringes obtained show the temperature profile across the flame and the turbulent burning cell structure within it. The holograms were made in close proximity to the flame using a high power ruby double pulse laser combined with sharp optical filters and a fast large aperture shutter.A semi-automatic system has been developed to digitise the complex interferometric fringe patterns generated. The system has been designed, using scanning optics held under computer control, to operate as an active microdensitometer. The microdensitometer has an optical resolution of 4000 × 4000 pixel points per picture and a potential resolution of 60 000 × 60 000 pixels.  相似文献

Injection of N2 through micro-jets located on the dump plane of a lean premixed swirl stabilized combustor is investigated as a new method for mitigating combustion instabilities. This study focuses on the chemical and fluid dynamic processes by which the N2 micro-jets impact the flame dynamics. An experimental and numerical investigation is performed to characterize the combustion instability during the V-to-M flame shape transition in a swirl burner fueled with premixed CH4/air, at an equivalence ratio of 0.62. Reasonable agreements have been found between the experimental measurements and simulation results. Both of them present that the flame changes from V-shape to M-shape periodically, and a low-frequency instability around 10 Hz is observed accordingly. It is confirmed that intermittent flame extinction in the outer recirculation zone (ORZ) is the source of the combustion instability. Furthermore, injection of N2 through micro-jets located on the combustor dump plane, into the outer recirculation zone, results in a stable V shape flame. It is clearly seen that the ORZ dilution can eliminate the combustion instability without inhibiting the combustion efficiency. A special focus is placed on the impact of the diluent injection on the local flame-flow interaction. The nitrogen micro-jets increase the local nitrogen concentration by 7% on average, lowering the flame speed and extinction strain rates by 27% and 17% respectively. Moreover, the micro-jets increase the turbulence intensity in the ORZ, leading to a significant increase in the Karlovitz number and transferring the local combustion regime from the thin reaction zone regime to the broken reaction zone regime. Hence, the nitrogen micro-jets impact on both the turbulence and the chemical reaction rates prevents flame propagation into the ORZ and results in a stable flame.  相似文献

Recent studies have demonstrated stable generation of power from pure ammonia combustion in a micro gas turbine (MGT) with a high combustion efficiency, thus overcoming some of the challenges that discouraged such applications of ammonia in the past. However, achievement of low NOx emission from ammonia combustors remains an important challenge. In this study, combustion techniques and combustor design for efficient combustion and low NOx emission from an ammonia MGT swirl combustor are proposed. The effects of fuel injection angle, combustor inlet temperature, equivalence ratio, and ambient pressure on flame stabilization and emissions were investigated in a laboratory high pressure combustion chamber. An FTIR gas analyser was employed in analysing the exhaust gases. Numerical modeling using OpenFOAM was done to better understand the dependence of NO emissions on the equivalence ratio. The result show that inclined fuel injection as opposed to vertical injection along the combustor central axis resulted to improved flame stability, and lower NH3 and NOx emissions. Numerical and experimental results showed that a control of the equivalence ratio upstream of the combustor is critical for low NOx emission in a rich-lean ammonia combustor. NO emission had a minimum value at an upstream equivalence ratio of 1.10 in the experiments. Furthermore, NO emission was found to decrease with ambient pressure, especially for premixed combustion. For the rich-lean combustion strategy employed in this study, lower NOx emission was recorded in premixed combustion than in non-premixed combustion indicating the importance of mixture uniformity for low NOx emission from ammonia combustion. A prototype liner developed to enhance the control and uniformity of the equivalence ratio upstream of the combustor further improved ammonia combustion. With the proposed liner design, NOx emission of 42?ppmv and ammonia combustion efficiency of 99.5% were achieved at 0.3?MPa for fuel input power of 31.44?kW.  相似文献

In the Taykor-Coutte experiment on fluid flow counterrotating cylinders, there is a bicritical point where the onset of instabilities to Taylor vortex flow (a steady-state bifurcation) and spiral vortex flow (a Hopf bifurcation) meet. The nonlinear mode interactions near this bicritical point are analyzed, exploiting the role of symmetry in the bifurcation theory, and with emphasis of the relevance to experiments, for a range of raduis ratios 0.43 ≤η≤0.98. The mechanism of the pattern formation is elucidated, and several new flow patterns and transitions are predicted, including wavy vortices, bistability, hysteresis, and up to 7 quasiperiodic flows.  相似文献

Combustion characteristics of a laboratory dual-mode ramjet/scramjet combustor were studied experimentally. The combustor consists of a sonic fuel jet injected into a supersonic crossflow upstream of a wall cavity pilot flame. These fundamental components are contained in many dual-mode combustor designs. Experiments were performed with an isolator entrance Mach number of 2.2. Air stagnation temperatures were varied from 1040 to 1490 K, which correspond to flight Mach numbers of 4.3–5.4. Both pure hydrogen and a mixture of hydrogen and ethylene fuels were used. High speed imaging of the flame luminosity was performed along with measurements of the isolator and combustor wall pressures. For ramjet mode operation, two distinct combustion stabilization locations were found for fuel injection a sufficient distance upstream of the cavity. At low T0, the combustion was anchored at the leading edge of the cavity by heat release in the cavity shear layer. At high T0, the combustion was stabilized a short distance downstream of the fuel injection jet in the jet-wake. For an intermediate range of T0, the reaction zone oscillated between the jet-wake and cavity stabilization locations. Wall pressure measurements showed that cavity stabilized combustion was the steadiest, followed by jet-wake stabilized, and the oscillatory case. For fuel injection close to the cavity, a hybrid stabilization mode was found in which the reaction zone locations for the two stabilization modes overlapped. For this hybrid stabilization, cavity fueling rate was an important factor in the steadiness of the flow field. Scramjet mode combustion was found to only exist in the cavity stabilized location for the conditions studied.  相似文献

The coupling between the fluid dynamics, heat addition, and the acoustics of a combustor system determine whether it is prone toward combustion instability. This paper presents results from a benchmark study of the eigenmodes in an unstable experimental combustor. The axisymmetric combustor configuration is representative of a number of practical systems and comprises an injector tube, geometric expansion into a combustion chamber, and a short converging nozzle. Instability limit cycle amplitudes ranged from 5% to nearly 50% of the mean 2.2 MPa pressure. Multiple harmonics were measured for the highly unstable cases. The model combustor was designed to provide a fairly comprehensive set of tested effects: sonic vs subsonic inlets; oxidizer tube lengths that were either quarter-wave, half-wave, or off-resonant acoustic equivalents to the combustion chamber; a significant injector mean flow with Ma∼0.4; and a varied combustion chamber length. The measured mode shape data were analyzed and reduced to provide comparison with results from a linearized one-dimensional Euler model, which included the effects of real boundary conditions, entropy generation, area change, and heat and mass addition, but did not include a model for unsteady heat addition. For low-amplitude instabilities, the measured resonance frequencies agreed with those calculated by the model for the injector tube-combustion chamber system. Resonance frequencies for the high-amplitude oscillation cases corresponded to the first longitudinal frequency of the combustion chamber and its integer multiples. Good quantitative agreement was obtained between computed and measured phase difference profiles, and mode envelopes agreed qualitatively. These results provide a basis for subsequent combustion response studies on the effects of unsteady heat addition.  相似文献

This paper reports work on a nonpremixed half-dump combustor, in which methane is injected at the backward-facing step, and mixes and burns with the air flowing past the step in the unsteady recirculation zone. The flow and geometric parameters are widely varied, to gradually change from conditions of low-amplitude noise to excitation of high-amplitude discrete tones. The purpose of the work is to focus on the transition from the former condition to the latter, and to mark the onset of instability. Dimensionless groups such as the Helmholtz and Strouhal numbers are formed based on the observed dominant frequencies, whose variation with the air flow Reynolds number is used to identify the oscillations as those due to the natural acoustic modes or the vortex shedding process. High-speed chemiluminescence imaging reveals shedding of vortical structures in the flame zone. With variation in the conditions, flow-acoustic lock-on and transition from one vortex shedding mode to another is marked by nonlinearity in the corresponding amplitude variations. Such conditions are identified as the onset of instability in terms of the ratio of the flow time scale to the acoustic time scale and mapped against the operating fuel-air equivalence ratio of the combustor.  相似文献

The effect of turbulization of a hydrogen-oxygen-air mixture flow on the deflagration-to-detonation transition in a pulse combustor (PC) is studied. The parameters of operation of the PC with flame front propagation in a quiescent and strongly turbulized mixtures (Re ? 104) are compared. It is shown that, in case of a quiescent mixture no detonation occurs because of a small length of the PC. The presence of intense pulsations (Re > 2 · 104) created by elements of special configuration in the mixing chamber promotes the formation of a detonation wave, the velocity of which depends on the fuel-to-oxidizer equivalence ratio.  相似文献

Large-eddy simulation (LES) of a liquid-fueled lean-direct injection (LDI) combustor is carried out by resolving the entire inlet flow path through the swirl vanes and the combustor. A localized dynamic subgrid closure is combined with a subgrid mixing and combustion model so that no adjustable parameters are required for both non-reacting and reacting LES. Time-averaged velocity predictions compare well with the measured data. The unsteady flow features that play a major role in spray dispersion, fuel–air mixing and flame stabilization are identified from the simulation data. It is shown that the vortex breakdown bubble (VBB) is smaller with more intense reverse flow when there is heat release. The swirling shear layer plays a major role in spray dispersion and the VBB provides an efficient flameholding mechanism to stabilize the flame.  相似文献

Annular combustion chambers of gas turbines and aircraft engines are subject to unstable azimuthal thermoacoustic modes leading to high amplitude acoustic waves propagating in the azimuthal direction. For certain operating conditions, the propagating direction of the wave switches randomly. The strong turbulent noise prevailing in gas turbine combustors is a source of random excitation for the thermoacoustic modes and can be the cause of these switching events. A low-order model is proposed to describe qualitatively this property of the dynamics of thermoacoustic azimuthal modes. This model is based on the acoustic wave equation with a destabilizing thermoacoustic source term to account for the flame’s response and a stochastic term to account for the turbulent combustion noise. Slow-flow averaging is applied to describe the modal dynamics on times scales that are slower than the acoustic pulsation. Under certain conditions, the model reduces formally to a Fokker-Planck equation describing a stochastic diffusion process in a potential landscape with two symmetric wells: One well corresponds to a mode propagating in the clockwise direction, the other well corresponds to a mode propagating in the anticlockwise direction. When the level of turbulent noise is sufficient, the stochastic force makes the mode jump from one well to the other at random times, reproducing the phenomenon of direction switching. Experiments were conducted on a laboratory scale annular combustor featuring 12 hydrogen-methan flames. System identification techniques were used to fit the model on the experimental data, allowing to extract the potential shape and the intensity of the stochastic excitation. The statistical predictions obtained from the Fokker–Planck equation on the mode’s behaviour and the direction switching time are in good agreement with the experiments.  相似文献

Flame stabilisation in a combustor having vortices generated by flame holding devices constitutes an interesting fundamental problem. The presence of vortices in many practical combustors ranging from industrial burners to high speed propulsion systems induces vortex–flame interactions and complex stabilisation conditions. The scenario becomes more complex if the flame sustains after separating itself from the flame holder. In a recent study [P.K. Shijin, S.S. Sundaram, V. Raghavan, and V. Babu, Numerical investigation of laminar cross-flow non-premixed flames in the presence of a bluff-body, Combust. Theory Model. 18, 2014, pp. 692–710], the authors reported details of the regimes of flame stabilisation of non-premixed laminar flames established in a cross-flow combustor in the presence of a square cylinder. In that, the separated flame has been shown to be three dimensional and highly unsteady. Such separated flames are investigated further in the present study. Flame–vortex interactions in separated methane–air cross flow flames established behind three bluff bodies, namely a square cylinder, an isosceles triangular cylinder and a half V-gutter, have been analysed in detail. The mixing process in the reactive flow has been explained using streamlines of species velocities of CH4 and O2. The time histories of z-vorticity, net heat release rate and temperature are analysed to reveal the close relationship between z-vorticity and net heat release rate spectra. Two distinct fluctuating layers are visible in the proper orthogonal decomposition and discrete Fourier transform of OH mass fraction data. The upper fluctuating layer observed in the OH field correlates well with that of temperature. A detailed investigation of the characteristics of OH transport has also been carried out to show the interactions between factors affecting fluid dynamics and chemical kinetics that cause multiple fluctuating layers in the OH.  相似文献

在一台光学发动机上,利用火焰高速成像技术和自发光光谱分析法,研究了燃料敏感性(S)为0和6时对发动机缸内火焰发展和燃烧发光光谱的影响。试验过程中,通过改变喷油时刻 (SOI=-25,-15和-5°CA ATDC) 使燃烧模式从部分预混燃烧过渡到传统柴油燃烧模式。通过使用正庚烷、异辛烷、乙醇混合燃料来改变燃料敏感性。结果表明,在PPC模式下(-25°CA ATDC),火焰发展过程是从近壁面区域开始着火,而后向燃烧室中心发展,即存在类似火焰传播过程,同时在燃烧室下部未燃区域也形成新的着火自燃点。敏感性对燃烧相位影响较大,对缸内燃烧火焰发展历程影响较小;高敏感性燃料OH和CH带状光谱出现的时刻推迟,表明高敏感性燃料高温反应过程推迟,且光谱强度更低,表明碳烟辐射强度减弱。在PPC到CDC之间的过渡区域(-15°CA ATDC),燃烧火焰发光更亮,燃烧反应速率比-25°CA ATDC时刻的反应速率更快。高、低敏感性燃料对缸压放热率的影响规律与-25°CA ATDC相近,此时的燃烧反应更剧烈,放热率更高,碳烟出现时刻更早。该喷油时刻下的光谱强度高于PPC模式下的光谱强度,说明此时的CO氧化反应与碳烟辐射更强。在CDC模式下(-5°CA ATDC),由于使用的燃料活性较低,燃烧放热时刻过于推迟,放热量很小,缸内燃烧压力低,因此燃料敏感性对缸压和放热率的影响不明显,但从燃烧着火图像中可以看到高敏感性燃料的火焰出现时刻较低敏感性燃料推迟。低敏感性燃料的燃烧初期蓝色火焰首先出现在燃烧室中心,着火火焰出现时刻更早,之后蓝色火焰从中心向周围扩散,呈现火焰传播为主导的燃烧过程;燃烧后期,局部混合气过浓区导致亮黄色火焰面积逐渐增大并向周围扩散。高敏感性燃料的火焰发展趋势与低敏感性燃料类似,黄色火焰的亮度与面积更小。尽管高、低敏感性燃料的OH和CH带状光谱的出现时间相近,但高敏感性燃料的光谱强度仍更低。综合分析,火焰发展结构与自发光光谱特征主要受喷油时刻的影响,燃料的敏感性主要影响着火时刻和火焰自发光光谱强度,且高敏感性燃料的光谱强度更低。  相似文献
