The ignition and combustion of coal particle groups are investigated numerically in a laminar flow reactor. The Flamelet Generated Manifold method is extended to account for the complex mixture of gases being released during devolatilization, which is calculated with a competing two-step model. A second mixture fraction is introduced to include the mixing with the second methane fuel stream. The interactions of the gas phase with particles are modeled within a fully coupled Euler-Lagrange framework. To investigate the influence of particle groups on ignition and combustion, successively increasing densities of particle streams have been analyzed. The ignition delay time is increased significantly by higher particle densities. This delay is validated successfully with the available measurements. Moreover, the shape of the volatile flame was found to be strongly influenced by the particle number density inside the flame. A transition from spherical flames around single particles to a conical flame around the particle cloud could be found in numerical results as well as in experiments. As the primary mechanism for the substantial ignition delay and the formation of the flame, the increased heat transfer from the gas-phase to the particle group, resulting in lower gas-phase temperatures, was identified.  相似文献

Devolatilization is an important process in pulverized coal combustion because it affects the ignition, volatile combustion, and subsequent char burning and ash formation. In this study, high-speed digital in-line holography is employed to visualize and quantify the particle and volatile evolution during pulverized coal combustion. China Shanxi bituminous coal particles sieved in the range of 105–154 µm are entrained into a flat flame burner through a central tube for the study. Time-resolved observations show the volatile ejection, accumulation, and detachment in the early stage of coal combustion. Three-dimensional imaging and automatic particle extraction algorithm allow for the size and velocity statistics of the particle and stringy volatile tail. The results demonstrate the smaller particle generation and coal particle swelling in the devolatilization. It is found that the coal particles and volatiles accelerate due to the thermal buoyancy and the volatiles move faster than the coal particles. On average, smaller particles move faster than the larger ones while some can move much slower possibly because of the fragmentation.  相似文献

To study volatile combustion processes of single coal particles non-intrusive simultaneous multi-parameter measurements were performed. The experiment was carried out in a fully premixed flat flame burner with well-defined boundary conditions. For flame visualization high-speed luminescence imaging was combined with high-resolution high-speed OH-PLIF. To address particle size and shape a stereoscopic high-resolution backlight-illumination system was set up. Due to simultaneous recording of individual particle events the volatile combustion duration related to particle size, shape and velocity was measured. A comparison of luminescence imaging and OH-PLIF for flame visualization was investigated to define their application areas in coal combustion. The stereoscopic backlight-illumination setup was benchmarked to a well characterized bituminous coal. With a pixel resolution of ~2.5 µm fine particle contours were resolved. The particle diameter and eccentricity were evaluated by an ellipse approximation. The experimental setup can be used to investigate different coal ranks and biomass in N2/O2 and CO2/O2 atmospheres in future.  相似文献

The present work reports an experimental study of particle group combustion of pulverized bituminous coal in laminar flow conditions using advanced multi-parameter optical diagnostics. Simultaneously conducted high-speed scanning OH-LIF, diffuse backlight-illumination (DBI), and Mie scattering measurements enable analyses of three-dimensional volatile flame structures and soot formation in conventional (i.e., N2/O2) and oxy-fuel (i.e., CO2/O2) atmospheres with increasing O2 enrichment. Particle-flame interaction is assessed by calculating instantaneous particle number density (PND), whose uncertainties are estimated by generating synthetic particles in DBI image simulations. Time-resolved particle sequences allow the evaluation of the particle velocity, which indicates a PND dependency and interactions between particles and volatile flames. 3D flame structure reconstruction and soot formation detection are first demonstrated in single-shot visualizations and then extended to analyze effects of O2 concentration, PND, and inert gas composition statistically. The increasing O2 concentration significantly reduces local flame extinction and suppresses soot formation in N2 and CO2 atmospheres. Volatile flames reveal higher intensities and lower lift-off heights as O2 concentration increases. In contrast to that, an increased PND leads to earlier flame extinction and stronger soot formation due to the local gas temperature reduction and oxygen depletion. The lift-off height reduces with increasing PND, which is explained by the complex interaction between particle dynamics, heat transfer, and volatile reactions. Slightly stronger soot formation and delayed ignition are observed in CO2 atmospheres, whereas CO2 replacement reveals insignificant influences on the flame extinction behavior. Finally, non-flammability is quantified for particle group combustion at varying PNDs in different atmospheres.  相似文献

This work presents experimental evidence that the transition from gas-phase diffusion-limited combustion for aluminum particles begins to occur at a particle size of 10 μm at a pressure of 8.5 atm. Measurements of the particle temperature by AlO spectroscopy and three-color pyrometry indicate that the peak temperature surrounding a burning particle approaches the aluminum boiling temperature as particle size is decreased to 10 μm when oxygen is the oxidizer. This reduction indicates that reactions are occurring at or near the particle surface rather than in a detached diffusion flame. When CO2 is the oxidizer, the combustion temperatures remain near the aluminum boiling temperature for particles as large as 40 μm, indicating that the flame is consistently near the surface throughout this size range. Burn time measurements of 10 and 2.8 μm powders indicate that burn time is roughly proportional to particle diameter to the first power. The burn rates of micron- and nano-particles also show strong pressure dependence. These measurements all indicate that the combustion has deviated from the vapor-phase diffusion limit, and that surface or near-surface processes are beginning to affect the rate of burning. Such processes would have to be included in combustion models in order to accurately predict burning characteristics for aluminum with diameter less than 10 μm.  相似文献

Ash particles produced from pulverized coal combustion are considered to be tri-modally distributed. These include the well-known ultrafine and coarse modes, and a central mode that is less reported but attracts increasing attention. This work presents a preliminary study on the formation mechanisms of the central mode particles during pulverized coal combustion. Experiments of four sized and density-separated coal samples were carried out in a laboratory drop-tube furnace under various controlled conditions. Experimental data show that the ash particle size distributions have an evident central mode at 4 μm for all coal samples. Increasing combustion temperature leads to an increase in the central mode particle formation, which is thought to be due to enhanced char fragmentation. The small-size coal sample produces a larger amount of the central mode particles, reasonably due to abundant fine particles in the parent coal sample. Under similar combustion conditions, both the Heavy (>2.0 g/cm3) and Light (<1.4 g/cm3) coal fractions produce a central mode, indicating that not only the included minerals but also the excluded minerals contribute to the formation of the central mode particles.  相似文献

The temporal history of the release of volatile alkali species during coal combustion is a significant, but poorly understood factor in the fouling and corrosion of heat transfer surfaces within industrial coal-fired boilers. We present new results of the simultaneous measurement of particle temperature, particle size and the atomic sodium concentration in the plume of a burning coal particle. During the char phase, the sodium concentration in the plume was found to be linearly dependent on the inverse of particle diameter, but during the ash phase the sodium concentration was found to decay exponentially with decreasing particle temperature. The centreline decay of Na within the plume above the burning particle consists of one region controlled by a first order chemical reaction and a second region controlled by diffusion.  相似文献

Discharge characteristics have been investigated in different gases under different pressures using a dielectric barrier surface discharge device. Electrical measurements and optical emission spectroscopy are used to study the discharge, and the results obtained show that the discharges in atmospheric pressure helium and in low-pressure air are diffuse, while that in high-pressure air is filamentary. With decreasing pressure, the discharge in air can transit from filamentary to diffuse one. The results also indicate that corona discharge around the stripe electrode is important for the diffuse discharge. The spectral intensity of N+ (391.4nm) relative to N2 (337.1 nm) is measured during the transition from diffuse to filamentary discharge. It is shown that relative spectral intensity increases during the discharge transition. This phenomenon implies that the averaged electron energy in diffuse discharge is higher than that in the filamentary discharge.  相似文献

We quantitatively study cavitation damage non-invasively, in-place and time-resolved at microsecond resolution. A single, laser-induced bubble is generated in an aqueous NaCl solution close to the surface of an aluminum sample. High-speed chronoamperometry is used to record the corrosion current flowing between the sample and an identical aluminum electrode immersed in the same solution. This configuration makes it possible to measure the cavitation damage in the nanometer thin passive layer of the aluminum surface via the corrosion current from the repassivation. Synchronously with the corrosion current, the bubble dynamics is recorded via high-speed imaging. Correlation between the two measurements allows contributing cavitation damage to the respective stages of the bubble dynamics. The largest cavitation-induced currents were observed for the smallest initial bubble-to-surface stand-off distances. As the bubble re-expands and collapses again in several stages, further current peaks were detected implying a sequence of smaller damage. At intermediate stand-offs, the bubble was not damaging and at large stand-off distances, the bubble was only damaging during the second collapse which again occurs at the solid surface.  相似文献

The model that takes chemical reactions, heat and mass transfers in the boundary layer of the particle into account simultaneously, is developed for simulating the combustion of a pulverized coal particle. The FTIR in situ temperature-measurements and the comparison between numerical simulations for the pulverized coal and the devolatilized char show that the volatile flame induces the combustion of the primary product of surface oxidation CO. Due to the influence of volatile flame, the char particle can be ignited at temperature lower than its heterogeneous ignition temperature, which elucidates the physical essence of joint hetero-homogeneous ignition mode discovered by Jüntgen.  相似文献

This paper aims to reveal the mechanisms governing the impaction and sticking dynamics of fly ash particles in pulverized coal combustion. The modeling work is of relevance to experiments in a 25?kW self-sustained down-fired furnace, which provides a sequence of real deposit shapes as varied boundary conditions for CFD simulations. Although the formed ash deposit has a comparable length scale with the probe, it has little effect on the global impaction efficiency of newly-coming particles. However, as the deposit builds up, incident particles impact the deposit and probe at generally larger impact angles and smaller normal velocities despite the almost invariant global impaction efficiency. It results in an enhanced local sticking probability in the center region of the probe, but a decreased one in the lateral regions. The incident kinetic energy of newly sticking particles to the deposit exhibits a converse correlation with their impact angle. The relationship of the averaged local sticking probability as a function of the azimuthal angle of probe is illustrated. Finally, the effect of Reynolds number on global particle impaction efficiency is examined. A universal formula is proposed, which is of importance to bridge lab-scale experiments and practical applications.  相似文献

Relatively few studies of fully hydrated live or fixed cultured animal cells viewed by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) have been published. In some cases there may have been some drying out of the cells. In this study the interface between water and cells is imaged as water is carefully evaporated to expose cells. Technical difficulties associated with the process, including inadvertent rewetting of cells are described. Suggestions are made for optimising operating parameters for viewing fully hydrated cultured cells by ESEM. The prospects for viewing live cultured cells are discussed.  相似文献

Approximating an arbitrary single particle potential by its expansion up to quadratic terms around the classical path may yield valuable approximations for the single particle and spectral density. We show this for a one dimensional model.  相似文献

Motion and swelling behavior of single bituminous coal particles during volatile combustion are investigated in a laminar flow reactor using a joint experimental and numerical approach. Three different particle samples with mean diameters of 90, 120, and 160 µm are studied in a conventional N2/O2 atmosphere with 20 vol% O2 mole fraction. Diffuse backlight-illumination (DBI) measurements with high temporal (10 kHz) and spatial (> 19 lp/mm) resolutions, combined with detailed parameter evaluation methods, provide fundamental insights into interactions of particle with flow and flame. The acceleration behavior of different particles is assessed based on the response time following the viscosity drag law. Rotation speed is determined by temporally tracking the orientation angle and shown to strongly correlate with the particle size and the devolatilization process. Simultaneously measured slip velocity and particle diameter enable evaluating time-dependent particle Reynolds numbers Rep. The swelling behavior is temporally synchronized with the devolatilization process and reveals a strong dependency on particle diameters. To better understand experimental observations, detailed simulations are first quantitatively validated against experimental ignition delay times and then applied to predict particle temperature histories. Further, the reduction of particle heating rates with increasing diameters is numerically quantified. The maximum swelling ratio decreases from 1.22 to 1.07 as the heating rate increases from approximately 3 × 104 to 8 × 104 K/s.  相似文献

An experimental study on ignition and combustion of single particles was conducted at normal gravity (1-g) and microgravity (μ-g) for three high volatile coals with initial diameter of 1.5 and 2.0 mm, respectively. The non-intrusive twin-color pyrometry method was used to retrieve the surface temperature of the coal particle through processing the images taken by a color CCD camera. At the same time, a mathematical model considering thermal conduction inside the coal particle was developed to simulate the ignition process. Both experiments and modeling found that ignition occurred homogeneously at the beginning and then heterogeneously for the testing coal particles burning at μ-g. Experimental results confirmed that ignition temperature decreased with increasing volatile content and increasing particle size. However, contradicted to previous studies, this study found that for a given coal with certain particle size, ignition temperature was about 50–80 K lower at μ-g than that at 1-g.The model predictions agreed well with the μ-g experimental data on ignition temperature. The criterion that the temperature gradient in the space away from the particle surface equaled to zero was validated to determine the commence of homogeneous ignition. Thermal conduction inside the particle could have a noticeable effect for determining the ignition temperature. With the consideration of thermal conduction, the critical size for the phase transient from homogeneous to heterogeneous is about 700 μm at ambient temperature 1500 K and oxygen concentration 0.23.  相似文献
