Bi-Inner Dilations and Bi-Stable Passive Scattering Realizations of Schur Class Operator-Valued Functions

Let S(U; Y) be the class of all Schur functions (analytic contractive functions) whose values are bounded linear operators mapping one separable Hilbert space U into another separable Hilbert space Y , and which are defined on a domain , which is either the open unit disk or the open right half-plane . In the development of the Darlington method for passive linear time-invariant input/state/output systems (by Arov, Dewilde, Douglas and Helton) the following question arose: do there exist simple necessary and sufficient conditions under which a function has a bi-inner dilation mapping into ; here U ₁ and Y ₁ are two more separable Hilbert spaces, and the requirement that Θ is bi-inner means that Θ is analytic and contractive on Ω and has unitary nontangential limits a.e. on ∂Ω. There is an obvious well-known necessary condition: there must exist two functions and (namely and ) satisfying and for almost all . We prove that this necessary condition is also sufficient. Our proof is based on the following facts. 1) A solution ψ _r of the first factorization problem mentioned above exists if and only if the minimal optimal passive realization of θ is strongly stable. 2) A solution ψ _l of the second factorization problem exists if and only if the minimal *-optimal passive realization of θ is strongly co-stable (the adjoint is strongly stable). 3) The full problem has a solution if and only if the balanced minimal passive realization of θ is strongly bi-stable (both strongly stable and strongly co-stable). This result seems to be new even in the case where θ is scalar-valued.      

Common Fixed Point Theorems in Non-normal Cone Metric Spaces with Banach Algebras

In this paper, we obtain a class of common fixed point theorems for generalized Lipschitz mappings in cone metric spaces with Banach algebras without the assumption of normality of cones. The results greatly generalize some results in the literature. Moreover, we give an example to support the main assertions.     

On Optimal 4-Dimensional Metrics

We completely determine, up to homeomorphism, which simply connected compact oriented 4-manifolds admit scalar-flat, anti-self-dual Riemannian metrics. The key new ingredient is a proof that the connected sum of five reverse-oriented complex projective planes admits such metrics. Supported in part by NSF grant DMS-0604735.

The existence of coincidence points and common fixed points for mappings satisfying certain contractive conditions, without appealing to continuity, in a cone metric space is established. These results generalize several well-known comparable results in the literature.

Using the setting of a generalized metric space, a fixed point theorem is proved for one map, and several fixed point theorems are proved for two maps. These results generalize several well known comparable results in the literature.

Convex Realizations of Planar Linear Trees

We prove a necessary condition for the existence of a convex realization of a planar linear tree. In the case of broken lines, it is shown that this condition is sufficient; a continuous algorithm constructing such a realization is found.

Categorical Realizations of Quivers

We introduce and study categorical realizations of quivers. This construction generalizes comma categories and includes representations of quivers on categories, twisted representations of quivers (in the sense of [9 Gothen, P. B., King, Alastair D. (2005). Homological algebra of twisted quiver bundles. J. London Math. Soc. (2) 71(1):85–99.[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]]), and bilinear pairings as special cases. In this general context, we prove the cancelation from direct sums, and show the existence and uniqueness of decomposition into a sum of indecomposable objects, provided certain assumptions hold. This yields similar results for the special cases just mentioned. Using similar ideas, we also prove a version of Fitting's Lemma for natural transformations between functors.

In this paper, we study the （α,β）-metrics of scalar flag curvature in the form of F = α ＋ εβ ＋ κβ^2/α （ε and k ≠ 0 are constants） and F = α^2/α-β. We prove that these two kinds of metrics are weak Berwaldian if and only if they are Berwaldian and their flag curvatures vanish. In this case, the metrics are locally Minkowskian.     

Rigid Properties of Quasi-almost-Einstein Metrics

In this paper,quasi-almost-Einstein metrics on complete manifolds are studied.Two examples are given and several formulas are established.With the help of these formulas,the author proves rigid results on compact or noncompact manifolds,in which some basic tools,such as the weighted volume comparison theorem and the weak maximum principle at infinity,are used.A lower bound estimate for the scalar curvature is also obtained.
