Summary In a comparison of the substrate specificity of the action of a culture ofActinomyces albus 3006 and a cell-free preparation obtained from the mycelium ofA. albus 3006, it was found that the spectrum of the action of the steroid oxidoreductase ofA. albus is broader than the spectrum of the action of the culture. Summary The substrate specificity of an intact culture ofBacillus megaterium in relation to steroids of the pregnane series with a dihydroxyacetone side chain and without it, and also with steroids containing a 16,17-epoxy ring, has been studied.It has been shown that a culture ofBac. megaterium performs the reduction of a 20-oxo to a 20-hydroxy group only in the case of 4-3-oxo-steroids containing a 16,17-epoxy ring.The necessity of a dihydroxyacetone side chain for the -reduction of a 20-oxo group has been established.S. The furanoquinoline alkaloids skimmianine, haploperine, and -fagarine are reduced at a dropping mercury electrode in 0.1 N (C2H5)4NI and (C2H5)4NOH in 80% ethanol forming tetrahydro or hexahydro derivatives according to the potential of the electrode.2. Carbostyryl and N-methylcarbostyryl are reduced under the same conditions to the corresponding dihydro derivatives.3.
