Localized changes in the density of water induced by the presence of an acoustic field cause perturbations in the localized refractive index. This relationship has given rise to a number of nonperturbing optical metrology techniques for recording measurement parameters from underwater acoustic fields. A method that has been recently developed involves the use of a Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) targeted at a fixed, nonvibrating, plate through an underwater acoustic field. Measurements of the rate of change of optical pathlength along a line section enable the identification of the temporal and frequency characteristics of the acoustic wave front. This approach has been extended through the use of a scanning LDV, which facilitates the measurement of a range of spatially distributed parameters. A mathematical model is presented that relates the distribution of pressure amplitude and phase in a planar wave front with the rate of change of optical pathlength measured by the LDV along a specifically orientated laser line section. Measurements of a 1 MHz acoustic tone burst generated by a focused transducer are described and the results presented. Graphical depictions of the acoustic power and phase distribution recorded by the LDV are shown, together with images representing time history during the acoustic wave propagation.  相似文献

Biophotonic imaging with ultrasound-modulated optical tomography (UOT) promises ultrasonically resolved imaging in biological tissues. A key challenge in this imaging technique is a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We show significant UOT signal enhancement by using intense time-gated acoustic bursts. A CCD camera captured the speckle pattern from a laser-illuminated tissue phantom. Differences in speckle contrast were observed when ultrasonic bursts were applied, compared with when no ultrasound was applied. When CCD triggering was synchronized with burst initiation, acoustic-radiation-force-induced displacements were detected. To avoid mechanical contrast in UOT images, the CCD camera acquisition was delayed several milliseconds until transient effects of acoustic radiation force attenuated to a satisfactory level. The SNR of our system was sufficiently high to provide an image pixel per acoustic burst without signal averaging. Because of the substantially improved SNR, the use of intense acoustic bursts is a promising signal enhancement strategy for UOT.  相似文献

We propose an experimental approach to directly detect the acoustic radiation induced static component(SC)of primary longitudinal(L) wave propagation in solids using an ultrasonic pitch-catch technique, where a lowfrequency ultrasonic transducer is used to detect the SC generated by the co-propagating primary L-wave tone burst that is excited by a high-frequency ultrasonic transducer.Essentially, the experimental approach proposed uses a dynamic method to detect the SC generated. The basic requirement is that the central frequency of the low-frequency ultrasonic transducer needs to be near the center of the main lobe frequency range of the time-domain envelope of the primary L-wave tone burst.Under this condition, the main lobe of the frequency spectrum of the SC pulse generated adequately overlaps with that of the low-frequency ultrasonic transducer. This will enable the generated SC pulse to be directly detected by the low-frequency ultrasonic transducer. The performed experimental examination validates the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach for direct detection of the acoustic radiation induced SC generated by L-wave propagation in solids.  相似文献

To find the possible reasons for the midlevel elevation of the Weber fraction in intensity discrimination of a tone burst, a comparison was performed for the complementary distributions of spike activity of an ensemble of space nerves, such as the distribution of time instants when spikes occur, the distribution of interspike intervals, and the autocorrelation function. The distribution properties were detected in a poststimulus histogram, an interspike interval histogram, and an autocorrelation histogram—all obtained from the reaction of an ensemble of model space nerves in response to an auditory noise burst–useful tone burst complex. Two configurations were used: in the first, the peak amplitude of the tone burst was varied and the noise amplitude was fixed; in the other, the tone burst amplitude was fixed and the noise amplitude was varied. Noise could precede or follow the tone burst. The noise and tone burst durations, as well as the interval between them, was 4 kHz and corresponded to the characteristic frequencies of the model space nerves. The profiles of all the mentioned histograms had two maxima. The values and the positions of the maxima in the poststimulus histogram corresponded to the amplitudes and mutual time position of the noise and the tone burst. The maximum that occurred in response to the tone burst action could be a basis for the formation of the loudness of the latter (explicit loudness). However, the positions of the maxima in the other two histograms did not depend on the positions of tone bursts and noise in the combinations. The first maximum fell in short intervals and united intervals corresponding to the noise and tone burst durations. The second maximum fell in intervals corresponding to a tone burst delay with respect to noise, and its value was proportional to the noise amplitude or tone burst amplitude that was smaller in the complex. An increase in tone burst or noise amplitudes was caused by nonlinear variations in the two maxima and the ratio between them. The size of the first maximum in the of interspike interval distribution could be the basis for the formation of the loudness of the masked tone burst (implicit loudness), and the size of the second maximum, for the formation of intensity in the periodicity pitch of the complex. The auditory effect of the midlevel enhancement of tone burst loudness could be the result of variations in the implicit tone burst loudness caused by variations in tone-burst or noise intensity. The reason for the enhancement of the Weber fraction could be competitive interaction between such subjective qualities as explicit and implicit tone-burst loudness and the intensity of the periodicity pitch of the complex.  相似文献

The objectives are to investigate the peculiarities of the ultrasound pulse propagation through human extra/intracranial media by mathematical simulation and to confirm the simulation results experimentally by proving the suitability of the ultrasonic time-of-flight measurement method for human intracranial media (IM) physiological non-invasive monitoring. The mathematical model of ultrasound pulse propagation through the human extra/intracranial media is described. The simulation of various physiological phenomena were performed to determine the relationship between the characteristics of the transmitted ultrasound pulse through the human head and the acoustic properties of the IM. It is shown that non-invasive monitoring of the IM acoustic properties is possible by measuring the changes of the ultrasonic signal time-of-flight and the oscillation period. The influence made by variations in acoustic parameters of the external tissue/skull bones on the non-invasive measurement data is investigated and methods of compensation of that influence are presented. The models were applied for developing of a new non-invasive sonographic intracranial pressure (ICP) monitor (Vittamed). Comparative studies of this monitor with the invasive ICP monitor (Camino) have shown the possibility of achieving clinically acceptable accuracy of the long term non-invasive ICP monitoring of head injured patients in intensive care units.  相似文献

On the feasibility of remote palpation using acoustic radiation force   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
A method of acoustic remote palpation, capable of imaging local variations in the mechanical properties of tissue, is under investigation. In this method, focused ultrasound is used to apply localized (on the order of 2 mm3) radiation force within tissue. and the resulting tissue displacements are mapped using ultrasonic correlation based methods. The tissue displacements are inversely proportional to the stiffness of the tissue, and thus a stiffer region of tissue exhibits smaller displacements than a more compliant region. In this paper, the feasibility of remote palpation is demonstrated experimentally using breast tissue phantoms with spherical lesion inclusions, and in vitro liver samples. A single diagnostic transducer and modified ultrasonic imaging system are used to perform remote palpation. The displacement images are directly correlated to local variations in tissue stiffness with higher contrast than the corresponding B-mode images. Relationships between acoustic beam parameters, lesion characteristics and radiation force induced tissue displacement patterns are investigated and discussed. The results show promise for the clinical implementation of remote palpation.  相似文献

The relationship between the bandwidth of a signal and the correlation of that signal with its ocean surface reflected arrival, a quantity we term frequency correlation, has been investigated experimentally and compared with two theories. Decorrelation of wideband surface scattered signals is a direct consequence of time spread. The acoustic measurement utilized a very short pure tone signal, from which time spread has been estimated, and four broadband signals with different bandwidths, for which correlation with the transmitted signal has been measured. An environment-driven model developed by Dahl was used to predict time spread, which agreed favorably with our time spread measurements. The model was also employed in two theories that predict frequency correlation. The first, a theory published by Reeves in 1974, is based upon the ratio of signal temporal resolution to total time spread. This theory compared well with our measurements for 1 kHz bandwidth signals, but is not applicable for signal bandwidths greater than about 2 kHz. The second, a theory developed by Ziomek, models ocean acoustic propagation as transmission through a linear system. This theory agreed well with our frequency correlation measurements for signal bandwidths of 1-22 kHz.  相似文献

Broadband scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) has been used to investigate the mechanical properties of sections of tissue with a resolution of around 8 microns. The work reported here extends these results by reporting the frequency dependence of the attenuation coefficient from 100-500 MHz. A discussion of the theory of the measurements is presented. The scanning laser acoustic microscope (SLAM) is used to characterize similar tissue sections at 100 MHz. The data obtained with the two forms of acoustic microscopy are compared with results from the literature.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to examine two stimulus parameters that were reasoned to be of importance to comodulation masking release (CMR). The first was the degree of fluctuation, or depth of modulation, in the masker bands, and the second was the temporal position of the signal with respect to the modulations of the masker. The investigation began by demonstrating the efficacy of sinusoidally amplitude-modulated (SAM) tonal complex maskers in eliciting CMR. "Nine-band" maskers, 650 ms in duration, were constructed by adding together nine SAM tones spaced at 100-Hz intervals from 300 to 1100 Hz. The rate of modulation for each SAM tone was 10 Hz, and the depth of modulation was 100%. Using such maskers, it was shown that when the on-frequency SAM tone had a modulation depth of 100%, the threshold for a 250-ms, 700-Hz tone improved monotonically as the modulation depths of the flanking SAM tones increased from 0% to 100%. When the on-frequency SAM tone had a modulation depth of 63%, some listeners performed optimally when the flanking SAM tones also exhibited a modulation depth of 63%, whereas others performed best when the flankers had modulation depths of 100%. With regard to signal position, a typical CMR effect was observed when the signal, consisting of a train of three 50-ms, 700-Hz tone bursts, was placed in the dips of the on-frequency masker. However, when the signal was placed at the peaks of the envelope, an increase in masking was observed for a comodulated masker.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This experiment was designed to yield precise measures of the statistical properties of perceived sound images. Results are reported for listeners' judgments of intracranial sound image lateral positions in response to binaural tone burst stimuli (250 Hz, 50 ms) with varying interaural phase differences, conditional on the absence or presence of a (left or right) reference monaural tone burst (also 250 Hz, 50 ms) ending 500 ms prior to the test signal. The monaural-reference shifted the position distributions toward the opposite side of the head. The position distribution variance and skewness depended on the mean of the position distribution, not on the interaural phase difference of the stimulus. The standard deviation increased as the mean moved laterally from midline. Near the midline the position distributions were skewed ipsilaterally. Near either ear they were skewed toward the midline. The results suggest that the most important noise limiting performance originates central to brainstem coincidence detector networks.  相似文献

An eight-channel ultrasonic detecting device for microbiological quality evaluation of packed liquid foods is presented in this paper. This device makes possible a non-invasive detection of the microbial growth in liquid foods with no need to open the carton-based packages where they are contained. Thermal and humidity stabilization are required inside the measuring chamber. The changes in the liquid media produced by the microorganism growth induce variations in the ultrasonic propagation parameters giving a non-invasive evidence of the developing contamination. For that purpose, the amplitude and time of flight of an ultrasonic 800 kHz tone burst travelling through an UHT milk pack are analysed. Inoculated and sterile packs were tested to evaluate the performance of this new non-invasive ultrasonic microbiological quality sensor.  相似文献

Quantitative ultrasound has recently drawn significant interest in the monitoring of the bone healing process. Several research groups have studied ultrasound propagation in healing bones numerically, assuming callus to be a homogeneous and isotropic medium, thus neglecting the multiple scattering phenomena that occur due to the porous nature of callus. In this study, we model ultrasound wave propagation in healing long bones using an iterative effective medium approximation (IEMA), which has been shown to be significantly accurate for highly concentrated elastic mixtures. First, the effectiveness of IEMA in bone characterization is examined: (a) by comparing the theoretical phase velocities with experimental measurements in cancellous bone mimicking phantoms, and (b) by simulating wave propagation in complex healing bone geometries by using IEMA. The original material properties of cortical bone and callus were derived using serial scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) images from previous animal studies. Guided wave analysis is performed for different healing stages and the results clearly indicate that IEMA predictions could provide supplementary information for bone assessment during the healing process. This methodology could potentially be applied in numerical studies dealing with wave propagation in composite media such as healing or osteoporotic bones in order to reduce the simulation time and simplify the study of complicated geometries with a significant porous nature.  相似文献

Transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) are responses generated within the inner ear in response to acoustic stimuli and are indicative of normal cochlear function. They are commonly acquired by averaging post-stimulus acoustic responses recorded near the eardrum in response to brief stimuli such as clicks or tone pips. In this study a new long duration stimulus consisting of a frequency swept tone is introduced for the acquisition of TEOAEs. Like stimulus frequency generated OAEs, swept-tone responses contain embedded OAEs. With swept-tone analysis, OAEs can be recovered by convolving it with a time reversed swept-tone signal resulting in time-compression. In addition, higher order nonlinear OAE responses were removed from the linear TEOAE. The results show comparable phase and time-frequency properties between the click and swept-tone evoked OAEs. Swept-tone acquisition of TEOAEs has beneficial noise properties, improving the signal to noise ratio by 6 dB compared to click evoked responses thus offering testing time savings. Additionally, swept-tone analysis removed synchronized spontaneous OAE activity from the recordings of subjects exhibiting such responses in conventional click TEOAEs. Since swept-tone stimulus consists of a single frequency component at any instantaneous moment, its analysis also provides for direct comparison with stimulus-frequency OAEs and click evoked OAEs.

We introduce a microacoustic sensor, which combines the quartz crystal microbalance, a liquid-filled cavity and an intermediate artificial layer with effective acoustic properties. Each of the three components fulfils a specific task. The quartz vibrates in its thickness shear mode and acts as source and detector of shear waves, which penetrate the intermediate artificial layer and excite a resonance in the liquid-filled cavity. Both the piezoelectric transducer and the liquid-filled cavity are high-Q resonators with well-adjusted resonance frequencies very close to each other. The intermediate artificial layer couples the two resonators in a distinct manner via control of the propagation of acoustic waves between the quartz crystal and the liquid-filled cavity layer. The origin of the sensor signal is a change of the resonance frequency of the liquid-filled cavity caused by variations of acoustic properties of the liquid analyte inside the cavity, first of all speed of sound. This resonance appears as second resonance peak in the admittance spectrum of the quartz crystal.  相似文献

Most ultrasonic guided wave methods require tone burst excitations to achieve some degree of mode purity while maintaining temporal resolution. In addition, it is often desirable to acquire data using multiple frequencies, particularly during method development when the best frequency for a specific application is not known. However, this process is inconvenient and time-consuming, particularly if extensive signal averaging at each excitation frequency is required to achieve a satisfactory signal-to-noise ratio. Both acquisition time and data storage requirements may be prohibitive if responses from many narrowband tone burst excitations are measured. Here chirp excitations are utilized to address the need to both test at multiple frequencies and achieve a high signal-to-noise ratio to minimize acquisition time. A broadband chirp is used to acquire data at a wide range of frequencies, and deconvolution is applied to extract multiple narrowband responses. After optimizing the frequency and duration of the desired tone burst excitation, a long-time narrowband chirp is used as the actual excitation, and the desired tone burst response is similarly extracted during post-processing. Results are shown that demonstrate the efficacy of both broadband and narrowband chirp excitations.  相似文献

A new physical effect is reported. In single crystals of lithium niobate (LiNbO3), we have observed an acoustical memory effect. An acoustical tone burst is stored inside the crystal and reemitted at a later time. This memory signal is related to the acousto-electrical properties of the ferroelectric medium. Futhermore, it is shown to be sensitive to both temperature and frequency.  相似文献

To study the mechanisms that govern the coding of temporal features of complex sound signals, responses of single neurons located in the dorsal nucleus of the medulla oblongata (the cochlear nucleus) of a curarized grass frog (Rana temporaria) to pure tone bursts and amplitude modulated tone bursts with a modulation frequency of 20 Hz and modulation depths of 10 and 80% were recorded. The carrier frequency was equal to the characteristic frequency of a neuron, the average signal level was 20–30 dB above the threshold, and the signal duration was equal to ten full modulation periods. Of the 133 neurons studied, 129 neurons responded to 80% modulated tone bursts by discharges that were phase-locked with the envelope waveform. At this modulation depth, the best phase locking was observed for neurons with the phasic type of response to tone bursts. For tonic neurons with low characteristic frequencies, along with the reproduction of the modulation, phase locking with the carrier frequency of the signal was observed. At 10% amplitude modulation, phasic neurons usually responded to only the onset of a tone burst. Almost all tonic units showed a tendency to reproduce the envelope, although the efficiency of the reproduction was low, and for half of these neurons, it was below the reliability limit. Some neurons exhibited a more efficient reproduction of the weak modulation. For almost half of the neurons, a reliable improvement was observed in the phase locking of the response during the tone burst presentation (from the first to the tenth modulation period). The cooperative histogram of a set of neurons responding to 10% modulated tone bursts within narrow ranges of frequencies and intensities retains the information on the dynamics of the envelope variation. The data are compared with the results obtained from the study of the responses to similar signals in the acoustic midbrain center of the same object and also with the psychophysical effect of a differential sensitivity increase in the process of adaptation.  相似文献

Results of the observation of seasonal variations in the vertical distribution of water temperature in the shelf zone of the Sea of Japan are presented, and the effect of this variability on the parameters of internal waves and on sound propagation is studied. The measurements were carried out in different seasons using a vertical acoustical-hydrophysical measuring system. The propagation of sound (tone and noise signals) was studied on a 510-m-long track at a constant depth of 38 m. Using a self-contained resonance (320 Hz) transmitter of the electromagnetic type, which was bottom-moored at a depth of 65 m, a 10.6-km-long stationary acoustic track crossing the shelf was set up. During the in-sea experiments, the spatial characteristics of internal waves were measured along with the distributions of temperature, salinity, sound velocity, and sea level variations.  相似文献

Acoustically modulated speckle imaging of biological tissues   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A video laser speckle imaging technique yields images with contrast based on the mechanical properties of a tissue. Fluctuations of laser speckle patterns induced by acoustically driving the tissue at various frequencies in the 0-30-Hz range encode the mechanical strain of the tissue. At each acoustic frequency and within the camera acquisition time, each camera pixel integrates a temporally fluctuating speckle intensity whose variance encodes the mechanical strain in response to the acoustic modulation. The magnitude and the frequency dependence of this strain provide mechanical information about the tissue and are the contrast mechanism for images.  相似文献
