This paper is concerned with two rearrangement optimization problems. These problems are motivated by two eigenvalue problems which depend nonlinearly on the eigenvalues. We consider a rational and a quadratic eigenvalue problem with Dirichlet’s boundary condition and investigate two related optimization problems where the goal function is the corresponding first eigenvalue. The first eigenvalue in the rational eigenvalue problem represents the ground state energy of a nanostructured quantum dot. In both the problems, the admissible set is a rearrangement class of a given function.  相似文献

The second largest Laplacian eigenvalue of a graph is the second largest eigenvalue of the associated Laplacian matrix. In this paper, we study extremal graphs for the extremal values of the second largest Laplacian eigenvalue and the Laplacian separator of a connected graph, respectively. All simple connected graphs with second largest Laplacian eigenvalue at most 3 are characterized. It is also shown that graphs with second largest Laplacian eigenvalue at most 3 are determined by their Laplacian spectrum. Moreover, the graphs with maximum and the second maximum Laplacian separators among all connected graphs are determined.  相似文献

In applications of linear algebra including nuclear physics and structural dynamics, there is a need to deal with uncertainty in the matrices. We focus on matrices that depend on a set of parameters ω and we are interested in the minimal eigenvalue of a matrix pencil ( A , B ) with A , B symmetric and B positive definite. If ω can be interpreted as the realization of random variables, one may be interested in statistical moments of the minimal eigenvalue. In order to obtain statistical moments, we need a fast evaluation of the eigenvalue as a function of ω . Because this is costly for large matrices, we are looking for a small parameterized eigenvalue problem whose minimal eigenvalue makes a small error with the minimal eigenvalue of the large eigenvalue problem. The advantage, in comparison with a global polynomial approximation (on which, e.g., the polynomial chaos approximation relies), is that we do not suffer from the possible nonsmoothness of the minimal eigenvalue. The small‐scale eigenvalue problem is obtained by projection of the large‐scale problem. Our main contribution is that, for constructing the subspace, we use multiple eigenvectors and derivatives of eigenvectors. We provide theoretical results and document numerical experiments regarding the beneficial effect of adding multiple eigenvectors and derivatives.  相似文献

The computation of lower eigenvalue bounds for the biharmonic operator in the buckling of plates is vital for the safety assessment in structural mechanics and highly on demand for the separation of eigenvalues for the plate’s vibrations. This paper shows that the eigenvalue provided by the nonconforming Morley finite element analysis, which is perhaps a lower eigenvalue bound for the biharmonic eigenvalue in the asymptotic sense, is not always a lower bound. A fully-explicit error analysis of the Morley interpolation operator with all the multiplicative constants enables a computable guaranteed lower eigenvalue bound. This paper provides numerical computations of those lower eigenvalue bounds and studies applications for the vibration and the stability of a biharmonic plate with different lower-order terms.  相似文献

We introduce the quadratic two-parameter eigenvalue problem and linearize it as a singular two-parameter eigenvalue problem. This, together with an example from model updating, shows the need for numerical methods for singular two-parameter eigenvalue problems and for a better understanding of such problems. There are various numerical methods for two-parameter eigenvalue problems, but only few for nonsingular ones. We present a method that can be applied to singular two-parameter eigenvalue problems including the linearization of the quadratic two-parameter eigenvalue problem. It is based on the staircase algorithm for the extraction of the common regular part of two singular matrix pencils.  相似文献

Summary. This paper explores the relationship between certain inverse unitary eigenvalue problems and orthogonal functions. In particular, the inverse eigenvalue problems for unitary Hessenberg matrices and for Schur parameter pencils are considered. The Szeg? recursion is known to be identical to the Arnoldi process and can be seen as an algorithm for solving an inverse unitary Hessenberg eigenvalue problem. Reformulation of this inverse unitary Hessenberg eigenvalue problem yields an inverse eigenvalue problem for Schur parameter pencils. It is shown that solving this inverse eigenvalue problem is equivalent to computing Laurent polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle. Efficient and reliable algorithms for solving the inverse unitary eigenvalue problems are given which require only O() arithmetic operations as compared with O() operations needed for algorithms that ignore the structure of the problem. Properties of the eigenvalues are examined in a nonlinear self-adjoint eigenvalue problem for linear Hamiltonian systems of ordinary differential equations. In particular, it is proved that, under certain assumptions, every eigenvalue is isolated and there exists an eigenvalue with any prescribed index.  相似文献

We consider a nonlinear integral eigenvalue problem, which is a reformulation of the transmission eigenvalue problem arising in the inverse scattering theory. The boundary element method is employed for discretization, which leads to a generalized matrix eigenvalue problem. We propose a novel method based on the spectral projection. The method probes a given region on the complex plane using contour integrals and decides whether the region contains eigenvalue(s) or not. It is particularly suitable to test whether zero is an eigenvalue of the generalized eigenvalue problem, which in turn implies that the associated wavenumber is a transmission eigenvalue. Effectiveness and efficiency of the new method are demonstrated by numerical examples.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with dependence of eigenvalues of certain closely discrete Sturm-Liouville problems. Topologies and geometric structures on various spaces of such problems are firstly introduced. Then, relationships between the analytic and geometric multiplicities of an eigenvalue are discussed. It is shown that all problems sufficiently close to a given problem have eigenvalues near each eigenvalue of the given problem. So, all the simple eigenvalues live in so-called continuous simple eigenvalue branches over the space of problems, and all the eigenvalues live in continuous eigenvalue branches over the space of self-adjoint problems. The analyticity, differentiability and monotonicity of continuous eigenvalue branches are further studied.  相似文献

In this article we analyze the effect of mass‐lumping in the linear triangular finite element approximation of second‐order elliptic eigenvalue problems. We prove that the eigenvalue obtained by using mass‐lumping is always below the one obtained with exact integration. For singular eigenfunctions, as those arising in non convex polygons, we prove that the eigenvalue obtained with mass‐lumping is above the exact eigenvalue when the mesh size is small enough. So, we conclude that the use of mass‐lumping is convenient in the singular case. When the eigenfunction is smooth several numerical experiments suggest that the eigenvalue computed with mass‐lumping is below the exact one if the mesh is not too coarse. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We consider a new adaptive finite element (AFEM) algorithm for self‐adjoint elliptic PDE eigenvalue problems. In contrast to other approaches we incorporate the inexact solutions of the resulting finite‐dimensional algebraic eigenvalue problems into the adaptation process. In this way we can balance the costs of the adaptive refinement of the mesh with the costs for the iterative eigenvalue method. We present error estimates that incorporate the discretization errors, approximation errors in the eigenvalue solver and roundoff errors, and use these for the adaptation process. We show that it is also possible to restrict to very few iterations of a Krylov subspace solver for the eigenvalue problem on coarse meshes. Several examples are presented to show that this new approach achieves much better complexity than the previous AFEM approaches which assume that the algebraic eigenvalue problem is solved to full accuracy. We consider Sturm–Liouville eigenvalue problems of second order with arbitary seperated boundary conditions and perform a suitabl discretization of them. The obtained discrete Sturm–Liouville eigenvalue problems are examined and the asymptotic behavior of their eigenvalue as the norm of the partition tends to zero is investigated.  相似文献

Summary. The paper deals with eigenvalue estimates for block incomplete factorization methods for symmetric matrices. First, some previous results on upper bounds for the maximum eigenvalue of preconditioned matrices are generalized to each eigenvalue. Second, upper bounds for the maximum eigenvalue of the preconditioned matrix are further estimated, which presents a substantial improvement of earlier results. Finally, the results are used to estimate bounds for every eigenvalue of the preconditioned matrices, in particular, for the maximum eigenvalue, when a modified block incomplete factorization is used to solve an elliptic equation with variable coefficients in two dimensions. The analysis yields a new upper bound of type for the condition number of the preconditioned matrix and shows clearly how the coefficients of the differential equation influence the positive constant . On the modification of an eigenvalue problem that preserves an eigenspace   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Eigenvalue problems arise in many application areas ranging from computational fluid dynamics to information retrieval. In these fields we are often interested in only a few eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors of a sparse matrix. In this paper, we comment on the modifications of the eigenvalue problem that can simplify the computation of those eigenpairs. These transformations allow us to avoid difficulties associated with non-Hermitian eigenvalue problems, such as the lack of reliable non-Hermitian eigenvalue solvers, by mapping them into generalized Hermitian eigenvalue problems. Also, they allow us to expose and explore parallelism. They require knowledge of a selected eigenvalue and preserve its eigenspace. The positive definiteness of the Hermitian part is inherited by the matrices in the generalized Hermitian eigenvalue problem. The position of the selected eigenspace in the ordering of the eigenvalues is also preserved under certain conditions. The effect of using approximate eigenvalues in the transformation is analyzed and numerical experiments are presented.  相似文献

In the present paper, approximate analytical and numerical solutions to nonlinear eigenvalue problems arising in nonlinear fracture mechanics in studying stress-strain fields near a crack tip under mixed-mode loading are presented. Asymptotic solutions are obtained by the perturbation method (the artificial small parameter method). The artificial small parameter is the difference between the eigenvalue corresponding to the nonlinear eigenvalue problem and the eigenvalue related to the linear “undisturbed” problem. It is shown that the perturbation technique is an effective method of solving nonlinear eigenvalue problems in nonlinear fracture mechanics. A comparison of numerical and asymptotic results for different values of the mixity parameter and hardening exponent shows good agreement. Thus, the perturbation theory technique for studying nonlinear eigenvalue problems is offered and applied to eigenvalue problems arising in fracture mechanics analysis in the case of mixed-mode loading.  相似文献

This work is concerned with eigenvalue problems for structured matrix polynomials, including complex symmetric, Hermitian, even, odd, palindromic, and anti-palindromic matrix polynomials. Most numerical approaches to solving such eigenvalue problems proceed by linearizing the matrix polynomial into a matrix pencil of larger size. Recently, linearizations have been classified for which the pencil reflects the structure of the original polynomial. A question of practical importance is whether this process of linearization significantly increases the eigenvalue sensitivity with respect to structured perturbations. For all structures under consideration, we show that this cannot happen if the matrix polynomial is well scaled: there is always a structured linearization for which the structured eigenvalue condition number does not differ much. This implies, for example, that a structure-preserving algorithm applied to the linearization fully benefits from a potentially low structured eigenvalue condition number of the original matrix polynomial.  相似文献

We study the solvability of nonlinear second order elliptic partial differential equations with nonlinear boundary conditions. We introduce the notion of “eigenvalue-lines” in the plane; these eigenvalue-lines join each Steklov eigenvalue to the first eigenvalue of the Neumann problem with homogeneous boundary condition. We prove existence results when the nonlinearities involved asymptotically stay, in some sense, below the first eigenvalue-lines or in a quadrilateral region (depicted in Fig. 1) enclosed by two consecutive eigenvalue-lines. As a special case we derive the so-called nonresonance results below the first Steklov eigenvalue as well as between two consecutive Steklov eigenvalues. The case in which the eigenvalue-lines join each Neumann eigenvalue to the first Steklov eigenvalue is also considered. Our method of proof is variational and relies mainly on minimax methods in critical point theory.  相似文献
